You can invest in gold by buying bullion coins or bars, purchasing shares in a physically backed exchange-traded product, holding gold through a vault or certificate, or using futures and options. These routes give you different things: metal, a security, a claim on vaulted metal, or a contract. Compare ownership, custody, total costs, access, and complexity before choosing. Gold pays no regular income, and its price can fall.
What does it mean to invest in gold?
Gold exposure does not always mean owning gold. A coin or bar is physical metal; a physically backed exchange-traded product holds bullion under its own legal structure; a vault service may record your ownership of stored metal; and a futures or options position is a contract. The distinction matters for custody, access, expenses, and what happens if a provider or product encounters problems.

Gold’s investment return depends on price appreciation because it does not pay regular income. Some investors consider it for portfolio diversification, but diversification does not prevent losses or guarantee that gold will rise when other assets fall. The World Gold Council, an industry organization, says small bars and coins represented approximately two-thirds of annual gold investment demand and around one quarter of global gold demand over the past decade; that period is not specified as one particular calendar year. Buying bullion gives you direct possession if you take delivery, or direct ownership held through an arrangement if a custodian stores it for you. You can buy from a bank or dealer, but the price typically includes a premium over the market spot price. Delivery, insurance, secure storage, and the spread between buying and selling can add to the cost.

Bars and coins differ
Bars are sold in sizes from grams to troy ounces and are generally described as having purity between 99.5% and 99.99%. Bullion coins are typically government-issued, often have a face value, and derive their market value mainly from their gold content; the World Gold Council gives a general purity range of 91.67% to 99.99%. These are broad descriptions, not a specification for every product. Check the exact weight, fineness, and assay or product documentation before buying. World Gold Council: Why invest in gold.
Check the full purchase and resale terms
Before buying, establish what the quoted price includes and how you could sell the metal later. The World Gold Council’s online-buyer guidance organizes due diligence around your goals, the product, the seller, and costs. In practical terms, verify the seller’s credentials and buyback terms, and account for the premium, shipping, insurance, storage, and sale spread—not just the spot price. How does a gold ETF work?
A physically backed gold exchange-traded product holds bullion and offers exchange-traded shares or units intended to track gold’s price, usually less product expenses. Investors generally buy and sell those shares through a brokerage account rather than arranging delivery, storage, or insurance for bars themselves. In return for that convenience, they take on product expenses and must understand the vehicle’s custody, tracking, trading liquidity, and redemption terms.

The label “ETF” is often used loosely. A product could be a registered fund, trust, exchange-traded commodity (ETC), note, or another security, with different legal rights and risks. Read the current official documents for the specific product rather than assuming that all gold-linked exchange-traded products are alike.
A trust example is not a universal template
A 2026 SEC-filed description of SPDR Gold Trust says its shares represent fractional beneficial interests in a trust holding gold bars, and that the trust seeks to reflect bullion price performance less operating expenses. That describes this product; it does not establish the structure or redemption rights of other gold products. SPDR Gold Trust SEC filing (2026).
Gold-lending claims need a defined scope
On 17 February 2025, Joseph Cavatoni, Senior Market Strategist, North America, at the World Gold Council wrote: “Let me be crystal clear and upfront—gold ETFs do not lend their gold.” His statement concerns U.S.-listed physically backed ETFs; it should not be generalized to every gold-linked product or legal structure. Check the documents for the product you are considering. Cavatoni’s World Gold Council statement.

Can you own gold through a vault or certificate?
Internet Investment Gold lets buyers purchase gold online for professional storage, with the possibility of taking delivery later. Vaulted-gold arrangements may represent outright ownership of stored bars or coins; a certificate can evidence ownership of gold held in a professional vault. These arrangements avoid keeping metal at home, but the details depend on the provider and contract.
Before committing, determine whether specific metal is allocated to you or whether you hold a different kind of claim. Review title and allocation terms, the custodian and counterparty, fees, insurance, audit information, minimum withdrawal amounts, delivery timing and costs, and what the contract says happens if the provider fails. Do not assume that online purchase or a certificate by itself guarantees immediate access to particular bars.
What are futures and options?
Gold futures are standardized contracts to buy or sell a specified amount and quality of gold at a future date for an agreed price. They can be used to take long or short exposure. Options grant a right to buy or sell under specified terms. Neither is the same as owning coins or bars.

These instruments require understanding contract terms, expiry, and—where applicable—margin and leverage. Contract specifications and broker margin requirements are product- and provider-specific; check current official contract information and your broker’s terms before trading. A position can behave differently from a simple purchase of bullion, and losses are possible.
How should you compare gold investment routes?
| Route | What you own or hold | Custody and access | Costs and complications to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bars or bullion coins | Physical metal | You may take possession or arrange storage; resale is typically through a dealer or another buyer. | Purchase premium, sale spread, shipping, insurance, storage, product specifications, and buyback terms. |
| Physically backed exchange-traded product | Shares, units, or another security linked to a product holding bullion; legal rights depend on the structure. | Usually traded through a brokerage account; redemption access varies by product. | Product expenses, custody, tracking, liquidity, brokerage costs, structure, and redemption terms. |
| Vaulted gold or certificate | Potentially ownership of stored metal or a certificate evidencing a claim; the contract determines the rights. | A provider or custodian holds the metal; delivery may be subject to minimums, timing, and fees. | Allocation, title, counterparty, custody, insurance, audits, fees, withdrawal terms, and provider-failure provisions. |
| Futures or options | A derivative contract, not the underlying bars or coins. | Access and trading depend on an exchange and broker; contracts have defined terms and may expire. | Contract specifications, expiry, margin or leverage where applicable, broker terms, and potential losses. |
Use the comparison to match the route to your priorities rather than looking for one option that is best for everyone. A person who values possession faces storage and security responsibilities; someone who prefers exchange trading must assess the product’s structure and trading terms; derivatives add contract mechanics that do not apply to owning bullion. For any route, consider total costs and how you would exit.
What do U.S. taxes and retirement-account rules say?
The following tax points concern U.S. federal rules, not tax treatment in other countries or state-level rules. IRS Publication 550 (2025) discusses gold bullion and coins held for more than one year within its collectibles rules. Collectibles gains fall within the 28% rate-gain category, which is a maximum rate category—not a claim that every investor pays 28%. The outcome depends on the facts, holding period, instrument structure, other income, and applicable law. Do not assume every gold ETF or other product receives identical treatment; review its current documents and consult a tax professional. IRS Publication 550 (2025).

U.S. retirement-account rules are also specific. The IRS describes an exception under which certain qualifying gold, silver, and platinum coins and bullion meeting statutory fineness requirements may be held in certain individually directed qualified plans when a bank or approved non-bank trustee keeps physical possession. The IRS also explains that an account’s acquisition of a collectible can be treated as a distribution. This is not permission for any IRA to hold any bullion directly or for an account owner to store it personally. IRS: IRA investment in collectibles.
What do recent gold-market figures show?
The World Gold Council reported US$3 billion in global gold ETF net inflows in July 2026. Its report also said assets under management rose 1% to US$530 billion and total holdings increased by 23 tonnes to 4,068 tonnes at the end of July. These are figures for that month and its reported holdings, not evidence of future returns or a recommendation to invest. World Gold Council: Gold ETF flows, July 2026.
