Most investors living outside mainland China cannot buy Shanghai STAR Market shares through an ordinary retail brokerage account. Direct offshore access runs through Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange limits STAR-board trading on that link to Hong Kong and overseas Institutional Professional Investors (IPIs). You therefore need a participating Hong Kong intermediary that can onboard you under the applicable IPI rules. If you do not qualify, a regulated China- or technology-focused fund or ETF may provide diversified exposure, subject to your country, broker, and tax rules.
What the STAR Market is—and why access is different
The Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) STAR Market is China’s technology-oriented board. It includes companies that can be earlier in their commercial development than mature main-board issuers, so eligibility, volatility, liquidity and disclosure risks deserve more attention than the exchange label alone suggests.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For a non-mainland investor, the key distinction is not simply “foreign” versus “Chinese.” It is whether your account and intermediary satisfy the specific investor class allowed to trade STAR shares through the offshore channel. The SSE states that the STAR board is open through Stock Connect to “all Hong Kong and overseas Institutional Professional Investors (IPI).” That rule is separate from the broader access rules for eligible Shanghai main-board shares.
Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect is an offshore mechanism linking Hong Kong market infrastructure with eligible A shares traded in Shanghai. It operates subject to a daily quota and a changing list of eligible securities. A person in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union or another jurisdiction normally needs an account with a Hong Kong Exchange Participant or another intermediary connected to the Hong Kong side of Stock Connect. HKEX investor material says direct access to Stock Connect is not available outside Hong Kong and mainland China, so a foreign residence alone does not create a direct trading route.

The practical answer for investors in the US, UK and EU
There are three possible routes, but they are not equivalent:
| Route | Who it is designed for | What it can provide | Main obstacle for an individual abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect | Hong Kong and overseas IPIs using a participating intermediary | Secondary-market trading in eligible Shanghai A shares, including qualifying STAR shares | You must meet the IPI definition and the broker’s onboarding and jurisdiction rules |
| QFII/RQFII | Qualified institutional investors and funds | Onshore access covering primary and secondary markets, STAR and a broader product range | It is an institutional authorization, not a normal retail workaround |
| China- or technology-focused fund or ETF | Retail and professional investors subject to local product rules | Diversified exposure without buying an individual STAR share directly | Availability, listing venue, holdings, fees, tracking and tax treatment vary by country |
A conventional overseas retail account is not automatically eligible for STAR trading. A broker that advertises “China A shares” may support only a subset of Stock Connect securities or only the main board. Ask specifically about “Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect STAR Market” and IPI onboarding.
Northbound Stock Connect eligibility
What the STAR-specific rule means
The STAR rule applies to the investor, not just the security. You need to be recognized as a Hong Kong or overseas Institutional Professional Investor under the applicable framework, and your intermediary must permit that classification for Northbound STAR orders. The exact evidence requested can include professional-investor declarations, assets or experience information, legal-entity documents, risk acknowledgements and jurisdiction-specific suitability checks. The broker, not a generic account-opening form, determines what it will accept.

Which STAR shares can appear in Northbound trading
STAR was added to Northbound eligibility on 1 February 2021 for shares meeting stated conditions: they were constituents of the SSE 180 or SSE 380 indices, or were A-shares of companies with both A and H listings. Those conditions do not make every STAR listing permanently eligible. Index membership, corporate actions and Stock Connect lists change. Check the live eligible-security list supplied by HKEX or your broker immediately before placing an order.

Quota and market-connection limits
Stock Connect is subject to a daily Northbound quota. The SSE’s introduction records that the quota was raised to RMB 52 billion on 1 May 2018; that historical figure should not be treated as today’s operational limit without checking the current rulebook. A quota can affect whether new buy orders are accepted during a session even when the stock and account are otherwise eligible.
Domestic STAR rules are not a shortcut for overseas investors
The SSE’s domestic individual-investor rules require at least RMB 500,000 in financial assets and at least 24 months of investment experience. They also provide a 20% daily price limit for STAR shares and no price limit during the first five trading days after an IPO.
Those thresholds describe a mainland domestic account. Meeting RMB 500,000 and the experience test does not by itself qualify a US, UK or EU resident for Northbound STAR trading. An overseas investor must satisfy the separate IPI requirement and use the relevant cross-border infrastructure. Conversely, an investor who qualifies as an IPI should still understand the STAR price-limit and IPO rules that apply to the underlying market.

- Confirm residence eligibility. Ask whether the intermediary accepts residents and tax residents of your country, and whether it serves individuals, companies, trusts or funds in your legal form.
- Confirm the investor classification. Ask whether it can onboard you as a Hong Kong or overseas IPI specifically for STAR trading, what documents prove that status, and whether the classification is elective or mandatory under your circumstances.
- Confirm the connection. The account should provide Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect, not merely an over-the-counter China product or a mainland-market data feed.
- Request the current stock list. Ask how the platform displays STAR eligibility and how it handles a security that is removed from the list.
- Get the full fee schedule. Request commissions, custody, exchange and clearing fees, settlement charges, foreign-exchange spreads, minimum tickets, corporate-action fees and any professional-account charges.
- Read the operating rules. Confirm order types, lot sizes, odd-lot handling, trading hours, holiday mismatches, quota treatment, suspensions, cancellation limits and settlement timing.
- Check reporting and tax support. Ask which statements, transaction records, cost-basis data and tax forms are available for your residence and account type. Do not assume the broker calculates your local capital-gains or foreign-asset reporting.
Do not fund an account until the written answers match the legal documents and risk disclosure. Marketing language such as “access to China stocks” is not proof of STAR eligibility.
Opening and using the account: a practical sequence
- Establish your legal and tax status. Gather identity, address, tax-residency and source-of-funds documents. If applying as a professional investor, prepare the evidence the intermediary requests for that classification.
- Read the Stock Connect and STAR disclosures. Look for quota risk, trading suspensions, price limits, settlement holidays, nominee custody, corporate actions and possible inability to sell under certain conditions.
- Enable the Northbound segment. Some platforms require a separate market-data agreement, risk test or trading permission after the basic account is approved.
- Fund in the supported currency. Ask whether the account accepts your home currency and whether conversion to RMB, CNH or HKD occurs automatically or through a separate FX order.
- Verify the ticker on the live list. Confirm the exchange code, share class, trading status and lot-size requirement on the day you trade.
- Place a small limit order first. Confirm the quote currency, maximum order size, order validity, expected settlement and the platform’s treatment of rejected or partially filled orders.
- Reconcile after settlement. Check the contract note, FX rate, fees, settled cash, share quantity and cost basis. Save statements for local reporting.
Trading mechanics you must understand
Currency and settlement
STAR shares trade in RMB. Your broker may arrange settlement in CNH or HKD, or convert from another currency under its own process. The conversion path can add a spread and a separate fee, and RMB, CNH and HKD are not interchangeable balances for every operational purpose. Ask which rate is used, when conversion occurs and whether you can hold a currency balance.
Lots, order types and price limits
STAR board lots and order-size conventions differ from Shanghai main-board conventions. Brokers may restrict Northbound clients to particular order types, commonly limit orders, and may impose their own minimums. Odd-lot sales, partial fills and cancellation windows can be handled differently from your home market. Verify the live specification rather than relying on a generic China-equities help page.
Recommended Free Tools
The underlying STAR market has a 20% daily price limit, while the first five trading days after an IPO have no price limit. A limit can delay an exit when news moves a stock sharply; no limit during the initial IPO period can produce extreme price movement. A trading halt, holiday mismatch or quota restriction can prevent an otherwise valid order from executing.

Nominee custody and shareholder rights
Northbound shares are registered in the name of HKSCC as nominee holder. The CSRC’s beneficial-ownership guidance says investors remain legally entitled to the rights and benefits of shares acquired through the Northbound Trading Link. Those benefits include dividends, participation in shareholders’ meetings and voting, exercised through HKSCC’s nominee procedures.
This is not the same as holding shares directly in an onshore mainland account. Your broker and HKSCC relay notices, elections and voting instructions, often under deadlines that are earlier than the issuer’s public deadline. Read every corporate-action notice promptly and ask what happens if you miss an election or if the intermediary does not support a particular action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Direct STAR shares versus a fund or ETF
If you cannot qualify as an IPI, a fund or ETF may be the more practical way to obtain China technology exposure. It is not automatically a STAR substitute: inspect the mandate, index methodology, holdings, domicile, listing venue and access in your country.
| Consideration | Direct STAR shares | China- or STAR-focused ETF/fund |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Requires STAR IPI qualification through Stock Connect and an approved intermediary | Depends on the fund’s listing, broker distribution, local regulation and investor type; often broader retail availability |
| Concentration | Single-company and sector exposure can be high | Diversified basket, although the index may still be concentrated; review holdings and methodology |
| Liquidity | Individual-share liquidity, suspensions and STAR trading bands apply | Fund-market liquidity, bid-ask spread, creation/redemption mechanics and tracking error apply |
| Costs | Brokerage, custody, exchange, settlement, FX and possible taxes | Management or total-expense ratio, brokerage, spread, FX and possible taxes |
| Currency | RMB trading with the broker’s CNH or HKD settlement arrangement | Fund base and trading currencies may differ from the currencies of its holdings |
| Corporate actions | Handled through the Stock Connect nominee and local-market procedures | Handled by the fund manager; you own fund units rather than the underlying shares |
Official market rules recognize ETF participation in Stock Connect and institutional fund access through QFII frameworks, but there is no universally available STAR ETF for every country. A product called a “China technology ETF” or “STAR 50 ETF” can have different listings, fees, currencies and holdings in different jurisdictions. Confirm the exact ticker, exchange, domicile, prospectus and tax treatment before buying.

QFII and RQFII: why institutions use a different route
QFII and RQFII are onshore regimes for qualified institutional investors. Compared with Stock Connect, they can cover primary and secondary-market investments, the STAR Market and a broader range of products. That wider scope is useful for institutions, asset managers and funds that need direct onshore participation or products outside the Stock Connect list.
They are not a simple retail workaround. Qualification, registration, custody, reporting and operational obligations are designed for institutions. An individual investor should not assume that opening an offshore account, incorporating a personal vehicle or meeting a savings threshold creates QFII/RQFII access.
Costs, tax and record-keeping
Your total cost is more than the headline commission. Model the following before trading:
- Broker commission and minimum ticket charges.
- Custody, exchange, clearing and settlement fees.
- RMB/CNH/HKD conversion spread and any explicit FX fee.
- Bid-ask spread and the cost of partial fills.
- Fund management fees and tracking difference if you use an ETF or fund.
- Taxes or levies imposed by the market, intermediary or your country of residence.
- Dividend withholding, capital-gains treatment, treaty eligibility and foreign-asset reporting in your jurisdiction.
Capital-gains, dividend-withholding and reporting treatment depends on residence, account type, security, intermediary and tax treaty. The available information does not establish one result for all US, UK or EU investors. Obtain advice for your own jurisdiction and retain contract notes, FX records, dividend statements, corporate-action notices and year-end holdings.
Risk checklist before buying a STAR company
- Eligibility risk: confirm both your IPI status and the security’s current Northbound eligibility.
- Liquidity risk: review turnover, free float, suspension history and the possibility of being unable to exit at your preferred price.
- Price risk: incorporate the 20% daily band and the absence of a band during the first five IPO trading days.
- Business risk: examine revenue quality, cash burn, financing needs, profitability path and customer concentration; early-stage technology issuers can fail or require dilution.
- Regulatory risk: read the issuer’s filings for industry restrictions, licensing, data rules and government-policy exposure.
- Ownership and lock-up risk: check insider holdings, lock-up expiries and planned shareholder sales.
- Currency risk: a gain in RMB can shrink when converted into your home currency, and FX spreads reduce returns.
- Custody and operational risk: understand nominee ownership, voting deadlines, settlement holidays, broker insolvency protections and how assets are transferred.
- Concentration risk: set a position limit if one issuer or one technology segment would materially affect your portfolio.
A decision framework
Choose direct shares when all of these are true
- Your intermediary confirms in writing that you qualify as an overseas IPI for STAR trading.
- The specific security is currently Northbound-eligible.
- You understand RMB/CNH/HKD conversion, quota, settlement and nominee procedures.
- You can tolerate single-company volatility, suspension and liquidity risk.
- You have a clear tax and record-keeping plan.
Prefer a fund or ETF when any of these applies
- You are a normal retail investor and cannot obtain IPI status.
- You want diversified exposure rather than one issuer.
- Your broker offers a regulated product in your jurisdiction but no direct STAR permission.
- You prefer the fund manager to handle underlying corporate actions and security selection.
Wait and investigate further when
- The broker will not state whether STAR orders are permitted.
- Fees, FX conversion or tax documents are unclear.
- The product’s domicile, holdings or index methodology cannot be verified.
- You cannot explain how you would exit during a suspension, quota constraint or holiday mismatch.
Bottom line for an overseas investor
Direct STAR Market investment from outside mainland China is an institutional-access question, not a simple ticker search. The established offshore path is Northbound Shanghai Stock Connect through a participating Hong Kong intermediary, and STAR trading is limited to Hong Kong and overseas IPIs. QFII/RQFII is broader but intended for qualified institutions. If you do not meet the IPI requirement, a properly regulated China- or technology-focused fund or ETF may be the practical alternative, provided you verify its actual STAR exposure, costs, liquidity, currency and tax treatment.
