You can get AI exposure without choosing individual semiconductor shares by using a fund that owns a basket of companies. The key is to look past an “AI ETF” label: read the mandate and index, inspect current holdings and sector weights, compare costs, and test whether the fund is diversified enough for your objective. Some AI funds remain heavily concentrated in semiconductors, while a broad-market fund may include AI beneficiaries as only one part of a much wider portfolio.
What “AI exposure without chip stocks” actually means
Artificial intelligence is an industry ecosystem rather than a single line of business. It includes companies developing models and software, cloud and data-center operators, networking and infrastructure suppliers, cybersecurity vendors, chip designers and manufacturers, and services firms deploying AI. Buying one semiconductor company gives you a narrow claim on that ecosystem. Buying a fund gives you exposure to a collection of securities selected under that fund’s rules.

An AI-themed exchange-traded fund (ETF) is the most direct basket approach. Its index may include hardware, software and services companies, but the exact mix depends on the index methodology. A broad diversified fund takes the opposite approach: it spreads assets across many industries and may own AI-related companies incidentally, without making AI the investment mandate.
Neither structure guarantees low semiconductor exposure. The only reliable way to know what you own is to review the fund’s current prospectus, index description and holdings file. Portfolios and strategies can change, so treat a fund name as a starting point for investigation, not as proof of diversification.

Three routes to consider
| Route | What it does | Potential use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-themed ETF | Tracks an index or strategy focused on companies linked to AI. | More targeted AI exposure through a basket instead of one stock. | Definition of AI, index rules, number of holdings, semiconductor weight, largest positions, countries, expense ratio and risks. |
| Broad diversified fund | Owns companies across many sectors; AI-related businesses may be included because of their overall market representation. | A wider portfolio in which AI is one source of potential growth rather than the central theme. | Current sector and company weights, geographic mix, total cost and whether the fund’s breadth matches your objective. |
| Combination approach | Uses a diversified fund as the wider base and a smaller thematic allocation for additional AI emphasis. | Separates general diversification from a deliberate thematic tilt. | Combined semiconductor and technology exposure, overlap between funds, rebalancing rules and the effect of the thematic sleeve on overall volatility. |
The available filings do not establish a current, head-to-head fee or holdings comparison between a named broad-market fund and a named AI ETF. Obtain those figures from each product’s latest documents rather than relying on an old comparison.
Start with the fund’s mandate and index
Read what the fund is required to own
The mandate tells you the portfolio’s intended scope. For example, the iShares Future AI & Tech ETF says it seeks to track an index of U.S. and non-U.S. companies expected to contribute to generative AI, AI data and infrastructure, AI software and AI services. That language appears in its summary prospectus dated July 31, 2026 (SEC-filed summary prospectus).
“Expected to contribute” is not the same as “pure-play AI.” It can permit a range of business models and may include companies whose AI connection is through cloud capacity, networking, data, applications or services. Look for the eligibility test, rebalancing schedule, weighting method and any minimum or maximum position limits in the index methodology.
Distinguish an index fund from an actively managed strategy
An index-tracking ETF generally follows rules established by an index provider. An actively managed fund can change holdings as the manager’s view changes. The distinction affects turnover, tracking risk and how quickly the portfolio can respond to a new technology or regulation. The prospectus should state which approach applies and identify any use of derivatives or other instruments.

Check the “80% policy” and similar commitments
Some funds make a policy commitment to invest a stated minimum in the companies or instruments covered by their theme. A KraneShares Public-Private AI & Technology ETF supplement dated September 22, 2026 reported a strategy change effective September 21, 2026 and a policy, in normal circumstances, to invest at least 80% of net assets in AI and technology companies and similar instruments (SEC filing). That is a fund-specific term, not a standard requirement for every AI ETF. Check the latest supplement because a later filing can replace it.
Measure concentration instead of trusting the label
Semiconductor concentration
An AI strategy can still be a semiconductor strategy. An SEC-filed AI Inference Technologies fund disclosure stated that, as of June 19, 2026, its index was concentrated in the semiconductors industry within the information technology sector (fund summary and principal risks). This is a dated, fund-specific description of that index; it is not a statistic about all AI funds.
Open the latest holdings file and calculate the semiconductor share. Include chip designers, manufacturers, equipment companies and other businesses classified in the semiconductor industry where the fund’s documents do so. If the number is not obvious, use the sector and industry breakdown supplied by the fund and read the classification notes.

Count how much of the portfolio sits in the top five and top 10 holdings. A fund can list dozens of securities yet remain dominated by a few very large technology companies. Compare those names with any other funds you already own; overlapping mega-cap positions can make two apparently different ETFs behave similarly.

Industry, country and currency breadth
Record the number of holdings and the weights of software, hardware, semiconductors, cloud or data-center infrastructure, communications, financials and other industries represented. Then check U.S. versus non-U.S. exposure and whether foreign-currency movements can affect returns. A thematic label does not establish that the fund is globally diversified.
Index-level concentration limits
Read whether the index caps individual holdings, sectors or countries, and how often it rebalances. A quarterly rebalance, for example, can leave weights drifting between dates; the relevant frequency and limits are whatever the current methodology states.
Compare costs and trading mechanics
Expense ratio
Use the current prospectus for the net and gross expense ratios, including any temporary waiver and its end date. The available filings do not provide a reliable, current head-to-head fee comparison, so do not infer that a thematic ETF is cheaper or more expensive than a broad fund. Record whether the stated ratio is recurring and which share class or exchange-traded product it describes.

Trading costs and spreads
An ETF’s ongoing expense ratio is only one cost. The bid-ask spread, brokerage commission (if any), premium or discount to net asset value, and the price impact of a large order affect what you actually pay. Check normal trading volume and the spread during the market hours in which you intend to trade. These are market conditions, not fixed promises in the fund name.

Turnover and tax consequences
Review portfolio turnover and the fund’s distribution history in its documents. A strategy that changes holdings frequently can generate more trading and potentially more taxable distributions in a taxable account. Tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and account, so use the applicable tax authority or a qualified adviser for a determination.
Step-by-step: how to screen an AI fund
- Define the exposure you want. Write down whether you want software and services, infrastructure, global companies, a broad-market core, or a deliberately concentrated theme. “AI” alone is not a measurable target.
- Collect the latest documents. Download the summary prospectus, statutory prospectus, shareholder reports, index methodology and current holdings from the issuer or the SEC. Note each document’s date.
- Read the mandate and principal strategies. Identify the index or manager, eligible securities, minimum investment policy, rebalancing schedule and any ability to use derivatives, depositary receipts or cash equivalents.
- Build a concentration snapshot. Record total holdings, top five and top 10 weights, semiconductor percentage, information-technology percentage, and exposure to other industries. Add country and currency columns for non-U.S. positions.
- Check the risk section. Mark every risk that could change your decision: thematic concentration, market volatility, liquidity, derivatives, currency, political or regulatory exposure and strategy-change provisions.
- Compare with a broad fund you could otherwise own. Use the same date and measures for holdings, sectors, countries and costs. If a value is unavailable, mark it “not stated” and find the issuer’s latest document rather than guessing.
- Examine overlap. Compare the proposed fund’s largest positions with your existing funds. Add overlapping weights to estimate your combined exposure to the same companies or industries.
- Choose an implementation rule. Decide in advance whether the thematic fund is a stand-alone allocation, a satellite around a diversified core, or not suitable for your purpose. Set a review date and a condition that would trigger a reassessment.
- Place and monitor the trade. Use a limit order when appropriate, confirm the executed price and spread, and save the documents used for the decision. Recheck holdings and prospectus updates rather than assuming the original mix remains unchanged.
Risks specific to AI-themed investing
Thematic volatility
A prospectus for the Defiance AI Hyperscale Leaders ETF warns that concentration in AI and related industries can make the fund’s shares rise and fall more than shares of funds invested across a broader range of industries (risk disclosure; principal-risks filing). A basket reduces single-company risk, but it does not remove the possibility that many holdings decline together when the same theme falls out of favor.
Business and technology risk
AI companies may face high research and capital costs, uncertain profitability, intense competition and rapid product obsolescence. Legal, regulatory and political changes can alter which products are permitted, how data may be used or where infrastructure can be built. These risks apply differently to a profitable platform company, an early-stage developer and a hardware supplier; read the fund’s holdings and risk disclosures together.
“Not a complete investment program”
The VistaShares Artificial Intelligence Supercycle ETF summary prospectus states: “The Fund is not a complete investment program.” (SEC-filed risk disclosure.) The statement is a reminder that a thematic fund is not automatically a diversified portfolio or a replacement for every other asset exposure.
Best Value
Market, liquidity, derivative and currency risks
Prospectuses identify the risks applicable to each product. An ETF may have risks from the marketability of an underlying security, derivative contracts, foreign currencies or a mismatch between its market price and net asset value. Do not assume that an ETF structure eliminates those risks; verify which ones the specific fund discloses.
Strategy and portfolio-change risk
Fund terms can move. The September 2026 KraneShares supplement demonstrates that a strategy can be amended with an effective date stated in the filing. A change in index, name, eligible companies or minimum-investment policy can alter your exposure without you selecting a new ticker. Check issuer notices and SEC filings during each review.
How to decide between a thematic fund and a broad fund
Questions favoring broader diversification
- Do you want AI to be one contributor among many rather than the main source of portfolio risk?
- Would a large semiconductor or mega-cap technology weight conflict with holdings you already own?
- Is minimizing concentration more important than making a targeted thematic bet?
- Can you tolerate a fund whose performance may diverge sharply from the wider market?
A “yes” to the first three questions points toward examining a broad diversified fund or reducing the size of any thematic allocation. The documents supplied for this topic do not identify a particular broad-market product or establish that one is suitable for an individual investor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuestions favoring a targeted AI basket
- Do you specifically want companies selected for an AI connection rather than their weight in the overall market?
- Have you measured and accepted the fund’s semiconductor, technology and top-holding concentrations?
- Are you prepared to monitor index changes, holdings and strategy supplements?
- Does the fund’s geographic and industry definition match the exposure you intended?
A targeted basket can be a deliberate satellite allocation, but the decision should follow the concentration and risk review, not precede it.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “AI” means software only. Read the eligible-industry definition; infrastructure and semiconductors may dominate.
- Using an old holdings snapshot. Concentrations change with prices, rebalances and corporate actions.
- Counting tickers instead of weights. A fund with many small positions can still be driven by a few large ones.
- Comparing expense ratios without dates. Waivers, share classes and revised prospectuses can change the quoted number.
- Ignoring overlap. Two funds can hold many of the same mega-cap technology companies.
- Treating a thematic ETF as a complete portfolio. The VistaShares disclosure expressly says its fund is not a complete investment program.
- Assuming the strategy is permanent. Read supplements such as the September 2026 KraneShares filing for effective changes.
- Using performance as proof of future suitability. The available filings do not provide a general market performance statistic or establish future results.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited SEC filings establish how particular funds describe their mandates and risks at specific dates. They demonstrate that basket exposure is available, that an AI label can coexist with semiconductor concentration, and that thematic concentration can increase volatility. They do not identify a universally best AI ETF, predict returns, or determine how much AI exposure any investor should hold.
Before investing, obtain the latest prospectus and holdings for the exact fund and account you are considering. Confirm the document date, read amendments and supplements, and compare the resulting exposure with a genuinely diversified alternative. If the fund no longer matches the role you assigned it, reassess rather than relying on its original name or marketing description.
