How to Invest in AI Semiconductor Stocks: Risks, Metrics, and Alternatives to Samsung

The practical way to invest in AI semiconductors is to start with the business you want to own—not the “AI” label. Chip designers, custom-silicon and networking suppliers, foundries, equipment makers and exchange-traded funds have different revenue drivers, capital needs, customers and risks. Map that exposure first, then compare segment growth, margins, cash generation, customer concentration, manufacturing dependencies, competition and valuation under several scenarios.

This is general investment research, not a personal recommendation. A strong semiconductor business can still be a poor investment when its share price assumes unusually favorable growth, margins and customer spending. The framework below is designed to help you investigate alternatives to Samsung and decide what evidence you need before buying any individual stock or fund.

What “AI semiconductor stocks” actually cover

AI computing is a supply chain, not a single industry category. The same theme can include a company designing accelerated-computing processors, a supplier of networking or custom silicon, a contract manufacturer that fabricates advanced chips, a company selling chip-making equipment, or a fund that owns a basket of semiconductor businesses. These exposures should not be treated as interchangeable with Samsung or with one another.

Accelerated-computing designers

NVIDIA and AMD sell products used for accelerated computing and compete in data-center markets. Their results depend on product performance, software and developer ecosystems, customer infrastructure budgets, pricing, manufacturing availability and the pace at which new architectures reach production. Both companies also face competition from chips designed internally by large cloud providers.

Custom silicon and networking suppliers

Broadcom is identified in AMD’s competition disclosures as another semiconductor supplier. This part of the market can benefit when cloud and enterprise customers build application-specific systems, networking infrastructure or custom accelerators. The economics differ from selling a general-purpose accelerator: contracts, design wins, customer concentration and the timing of large programs can matter as much as unit volume.

Foundry manufacturing

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) represents foundry exposure. A foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies, so its investment case is tied to customers’ combined demand, process technology, capacity utilization, yields and capital spending. AMD describes reliance on TSMC for advanced-node wafers, while NVIDIA describes relationships with external foundries including TSMC and Samsung. A foundry therefore participates in AI growth without selling the same products as a chip designer.

Semiconductor equipment

ASML is an equipment-market example rather than a direct Samsung substitute. Equipment suppliers sell the tools required to manufacture chips and can have a different cycle, order pattern and customer base from designers or foundries. The available company research here does not examine ASML’s current filings, so treat it as a category for further due diligence rather than a fully assessed investment case.

Sector and thematic ETFs

The Global X AI Semiconductor & Quantum ETF’s SEC-filed summary prospectus says the fund seeks, before fees and expenses, to provide results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of its underlying index. A thematic label does not guarantee broad diversification. The fund may still be concentrated in a few companies and remains exposed to semiconductor cycles. Read the current prospectus, holdings, expense ratio, index methodology and risk disclosures before assuming what you own.

Step 1: Choose the exposure you actually want

Write down the source of return you are seeking before opening a quote screen. Use this sequence:

  1. Choose the layer. Decide whether you want chip design, custom silicon and networking, foundry manufacturing, equipment or a basket fund.
  2. Define the demand driver. Examples include data-center accelerator purchases, cloud infrastructure build-outs, advanced-node wafer demand or equipment orders. Do not assume that growth in one layer automatically produces the same growth rate in every other layer.
  3. Set a time horizon. Semiconductor revenue can move sharply with product launches, inventory corrections and customer budget changes. A short holding period is exposed to different risks than a multi-year thesis.
  4. Set a loss and concentration limit. Decide how much portfolio exposure you can tolerate in one company, one customer ecosystem or the semiconductor sector before comparing securities.
  5. Identify the evidence that would change your mind. Examples include a sustained margin decline, a lost design win, weaker customer spending plans, delayed capacity or a valuation that requires faster growth than the business can plausibly deliver.

This process prevents a common mistake: buying a stock because it sounds related to AI while owning a business whose cash flows are driven by a different part of the semiconductor cycle.

Alternatives to Samsung by business model

The following map is a starting point for research, not a ranking. Each company has a distinct business model, and the risks cannot be equalized simply by placing the names in one list.

TSMC reported 35.9% year-over-year revenue growth in U.S.-dollar terms for 2025. Its 2025 annual report also described AI-market developments as positive during that year. This is a historical, company-reported result and management commentary—not a forecast and not evidence that the shares are undervalued.

The metrics that matter for individual companies

Compare companies using the same period, currency and accounting definitions wherever possible. A single headline growth rate can hide a deteriorating segment, rising costs or an increasingly concentrated customer base.

Revenue and profit by segment

Separate data-center, gaming, automotive, communications, consumer and other segments when the company reports them. Ask whether AI-related demand is large enough to move consolidated results, whether growth is accelerating or decelerating, and whether a high-growth segment is profitable after the costs required to support it. Check operating income as well as revenue; revenue growth purchased through unusually high spending may not create durable earnings.

Gross margin and operating margin

Gross margin shows how much revenue remains after the direct cost of products or services. Operating margin adds research, sales and administrative spending. Track the direction of both margins and read the explanation for changes. Mix, launch costs, pricing, manufacturing yields, expedited supply and stock-based compensation can all affect the trend. Compare margins with the company’s own history and with businesses that have a genuinely similar model, not with every semiconductor company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash flow and capital intensity

Review operating cash flow, capital expenditures and free cash flow together. A designer may need substantial research and development while a foundry must fund factories, equipment and process transitions. Strong accounting profit with weak cash generation can signal working-capital growth, inventory buildup or heavy investment needs. The relevant question is not simply whether cash flow is positive, but how much capital must be reinvested to sustain the growth assumption.

Customer concentration and spending plans

Read concentration disclosures and identify customers that represent a material share of revenue. Then examine what those customers are spending on, how long programs are expected to last and whether they have an incentive to develop their own accelerators. A large customer can create rapid growth and bargaining power at the same time. A forecast based on one or two buyers deserves a wider margin of safety than one supported by a diversified customer base.

Manufacturing, packaging and supply dependencies

Identify the external foundries, advanced-node processes, packaging partners and critical capacity on which the product roadmap depends. AMD specifically describes reliance on external foundries, including TSMC for advanced-node products. NVIDIA describes reliance on external foundries including TSMC and Samsung. Ask what happens if capacity is delayed, yields disappoint, packaging is constrained or a supplier prioritizes another customer. Dependence is not automatically a flaw, but it must be reflected in the risk and valuation analysis.

Competitive position and ecosystem

Review product performance, release cadence, software compatibility, developer adoption, switching costs and pricing power. A technical lead can narrow quickly when a rival launches a more efficient product or when a cloud customer moves workloads to an internally designed chip. Ecosystem strength can extend a product advantage, but it also creates execution obligations: updates, support, developer tools and reliable availability must keep pace with hardware.

Valuation under several scenarios

Do not use one optimistic growth estimate. Build at least three cases:

  • Downside case: customer spending slows, competition increases, pricing weakens or supply constraints prevent expected shipments.
  • Base case: demand grows but normal semiconductor cycles and execution costs reduce the rate and margin from the headline opportunity.
  • Upside case: product launches, ecosystem adoption and customer investment remain unusually strong for longer than expected.

For each case, connect revenue growth to an operating margin, reinvestment requirement and cash-flow outcome. Then compare the implied value with the current share price. If the price only works in the upside case, the business may be excellent while the investment remains vulnerable to disappointment.

How to investigate a stock, step by step

  1. Start with the latest annual filing. Read the business description, segment information, risk factors, customer concentration notes and manufacturing disclosures before relying on a chart or headline.
  2. Build a five-column operating sheet. Record segment revenue, gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow and capital expenditure for each available year. Keep reported figures separate from your estimates.
  3. Trace the AI claim to a product and customer. Identify which chip, system or manufacturing node is generating the demand, who buys it and whether the purchase is recurring, project-based or dependent on a limited number of deployments.
  4. Map the supply chain. List foundry, packaging, memory, equipment and other dependencies disclosed by the company. Mark which are internal and which are external.
  5. Test customer self-sufficiency. Search the filing for internally developed chips, single-customer exposure and changes in purchasing plans. Treat cloud-provider chip development as a competitive variable, not a footnote.
  6. Check the product calendar. Compare announced launches with the time needed for design, manufacturing, qualification and customer deployment. A product announcement is not the same as recognized revenue.
  7. Stress-test margins and cash. Model lower pricing, higher launch costs, slower utilization or greater capital spending. Note whether the balance sheet can fund the plan without assuming perfect conditions.
  8. Value more than one outcome. Use downside, base and upside assumptions and record which assumption contributes most to the result.
  9. Write a disconfirming paragraph. State the most credible reason the thesis could fail and what evidence would reveal that failure early.
  10. Set a review schedule. Recheck filings, customer disclosures, product availability, margins and valuation after earnings and when a major product or supply event changes the thesis.

Risks that can impair an AI-semiconductor thesis

Semiconductor cyclicality

Company filings describe an industry exposed to shifts in supply and demand, rapid technological change and intense competition. Customers can over-order during a shortage and then reduce purchases while inventories are corrected. A long-term AI trend does not remove the possibility of short-term revenue, utilization and margin declines.

Competition from customers themselves

NVIDIA identifies competition from other chip suppliers and from cloud companies developing chips for their own platforms. Internal silicon can reduce a customer’s dependence on merchant accelerators, change bargaining power or limit the addressable market for a supplier. The relevant risk is not that every customer will replace every product, but that a few large customers can shift spending at the margin.

External foundry and packaging reliance

AMD and NVIDIA both describe dependence on external manufacturing relationships, including TSMC; NVIDIA also identifies Samsung among its external foundry relationships. Capacity, yields, packaging and allocation affect how much demand can become revenue. A company can have orders and still miss expectations if it cannot obtain the required components in time.

Rapid product change

Accelerator performance, memory bandwidth, networking and software tools evolve quickly. A delayed architecture or weak developer migration can shorten a product’s economic life. Conversely, an apparently successful product can require heavy research and support spending to preserve its position.

Pricing and margin pressure

When more suppliers compete for the same workloads, customers can negotiate harder or substitute products. Revenue can continue rising while gross or operating margin falls. Monitor unit economics and mix instead of treating sales growth as proof that the investment case is improving.

Expectation risk

Share prices can already reflect strong AI growth, sustained margins and continued customer infrastructure spending. If adoption continues but returns on that spending are weaker than investors expected, valuation multiples can contract. This is an analysis implication, not a forecast of any company’s results.

How to evaluate an AI semiconductor ETF

An ETF can reduce single-company risk, but it does not eliminate sector risk. Use the current prospectus and fund website documents to verify every figure because holdings, weights and expenses change.

Check Why it matters Questions to answer
Holdings and top-position weights Reveals whether the basket is genuinely diversified How many holdings are there? What percentage sits in the largest five or ten?
Expense ratio Reduces returns over time and varies by fund What is the current annual expense ratio, and are any waivers temporary?
Index methodology Determines what qualifies as an AI-semiconductor holding How are companies selected, weighted, rebalanced and removed?
Liquidity and trading spread Affects the cost of entering or exiting What are typical volume and bid-ask conditions in your market?
Prospectus risks Explains concentration, sector and tracking risks Does the fund disclose semiconductor-cycle, technology, foreign-market or concentration risks?
Tracking difference Shows how closely the fund follows its index after costs How has performance differed from the index over comparable periods?

The SEC-filed summary prospectus for the Global X AI Semiconductor & Quantum ETF establishes its objective, but it does not establish a current holdings or expense-ratio comparison here. Obtain the latest documents before making a decision, and do not infer diversification from the fund’s name.

Buying and monitoring without overclaiming what the evidence says

Once the research is complete, use a regulated brokerage account available in your jurisdiction and verify the security’s ticker, exchange, currency and order details. Market orders prioritize execution but can produce a price different from the last quote; limit orders specify the maximum purchase or minimum sale price but may not execute. The appropriate choice depends on liquidity, volatility and your own instructions.

Record the reason for the purchase, the valuation case, the main risks and the evidence that would invalidate it. Review those items after each earnings release rather than reacting to a single day’s price movement. Keep company-reported historical results separate from forecasts and from your estimate of fair value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax treatment, account rules, trading hours and investor protections vary by country and account type. Confirm those details with the relevant regulator, broker and tax authority instead of assuming that a U.S.-listed stock or ETF has the same treatment everywhere.

A concise decision checklist

  • Can you name the exact AI-related product, customer and revenue segment?
  • Is the exposure to design, custom silicon, networking, foundry, equipment or a fund?
  • Are revenue and profit growing together, and what is happening to gross and operating margins?
  • How much operating cash flow remains after the capital required to support growth?
  • Are one or two customers responsible for a material share of demand?
  • Could customers develop an internal alternative or switch suppliers?
  • Which foundry, packaging and capacity dependencies could limit shipments?
  • What evidence supports the product and software ecosystem advantage?
  • Does the current price work in a downside or base case, or only in an unusually favorable upside case?
  • For an ETF, have you checked current holdings, concentration, fees, index rules, liquidity and prospectus risks?
  • What specific fact would make you reduce or exit the position?

Bottom line

Alternatives to Samsung are not one trade. NVIDIA and AMD provide accelerated-computing exposure; Broadcom represents a different custom-silicon and networking profile; TSMC offers foundry manufacturing; ASML represents equipment; and a thematic ETF provides a basket whose concentration and costs must be verified. Compare each on operating performance, customers, supply dependencies, competition, capital intensity and valuation scenarios. Treat 2025 TSMC growth as historical context, not a buy signal, and assume that cycles, customer-built chips, supply constraints and elevated expectations can challenge even the strongest AI narrative.
