How to Invest in a Broad-Market Index Fund in India

To invest in a broad-market index fund in India, first choose the index you want exposure to, then compare mutual-fund schemes tracking that same index. Check each scheme’s latest costs, tracking record, plan type and terms before buying through an asset management company (AMC) or an intermediary. An index fund aims to follow its benchmark, not outperform it, and its value can fall with the market.

What a broad-market index fund invests in

“Broad market” is not one standard benchmark. A fund tracking the Nifty 50, for example, provides different index exposure from a fund tracking a broader market index. Start by identifying the index name and learning which companies or market segment it covers; the label alone does not tell you whether two funds invest in comparable universes.

SEBI Investor defines these products as follows: “Index mutual funds are a type of mutual fund that aim to replicate the performance of a specific stock market index, such as the Nifty 50.” The fund holds some or all of the index constituents, generally in corresponding proportions, to track that benchmark. It does not aim to beat it. The fund’s NAV can move with the index, so investors can lose money.

How to compare funds tracking the same index

Compare schemes only after confirming they track the same benchmark. Use the latest scheme disclosures available at the time you invest: costs and tracking figures can change, and figures from different periods are not directly comparable.

  • Benchmark and coverage: Check the precise index name and understand its constituents or market coverage. Two funds described as broad-market may track different indices.
  • Expense ratio: Review the latest expense ratio for the plan you intend to buy. Fund expenses reduce returns, and direct and regular plans have different expense ratios. Do not treat an old figure in a scheme document as current.
  • Tracking difference: This is the fund’s return gap against its benchmark over a stated period. Compare annualized figures over matching periods and check how the scheme defines or reports them.
  • Tracking error: SEBI describes tracking error as the standard deviation of the differences between portfolio and benchmark returns over a period. It indicates how consistently the fund has tracked the index; consider it alongside tracking difference and use the same measurement period when comparing schemes.
  • Scheme terms and risk: Read the current scheme information document, riskometer, investment objective, replication approach, exit terms and purchase and redemption procedures.
  • Service and plan: Decide whether you want to transact independently or use distributor assistance, then verify the plan label before placing an order.

There is no single tracking figure or expense ratio that can establish a current best fund. Use fresh, same-period disclosures from the AMCs or AMFI to compare candidates; a dated figure for one scheme is not a cross-scheme ranking.

Choose between a direct and regular plan

Direct and regular plans belong to the same scheme and have the same portfolio and fund manager, but their costs and NAVs differ. A direct plan is bought without routing the investment through a distributor and excludes distribution commission. A regular plan is bought through a mutual-fund distributor or agent and includes distribution cost.

A direct plan involves choosing and managing the investment yourself. A regular plan may suit someone who values a distributor’s assistance. Neither label determines whether a fund tracks its benchmark well. Compare the plan-specific expense ratio, and confirm that the order page names the plan you meant to select.

How to buy the fund

You can buy through the AMC or through an intermediary or platform. Providers may have different onboarding and verification flows, so follow the chosen provider’s current instructions rather than assuming one universal process.

  1. Open the official website or app of the AMC or platform you have chosen.
  2. Complete its current investor-verification and bank or payment steps.
  3. Select the intended scheme, confirm its benchmark, and choose the correct direct or regular plan.
  4. Review the order details, including the amount and scheme terms, before submitting payment.
  5. Save the transaction confirmation and check that the units appear in the account or statement.

An SIP (systematic investment plan) is a facility for making recurring purchases; it is not a separate kind of fund. If you choose one, follow the provider’s current setup instructions and review the amount and frequency before authorizing it.

Match equity risk to your needs

An index fund can simplify exposure to a chosen market benchmark, but it does not remove equity-market risk. Consider your time horizon and ability to tolerate a fall in value before investing. Review the scheme’s risk disclosures and do not assume that a broader index guarantees a gain or protects your principal.

Check tax treatment when you sell

Tax depends on whether the scheme qualifies as an equity-oriented fund, how long units were held, the transfer date and other applicable conditions. AMFI’s FY 2024–25 guidance describes long-term gains on equity-oriented fund units as gains after a holding period of more than 12 months. For qualifying section 112A long-term capital gains on transfers on or after 23 July 2024, that guidance gives a 12.5% rate on gains above ₹1,25,000, subject to stated conditions including securities transaction tax (STT).

AMFI labels that tax table for FY 2024–25. The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 salaried-return guidance also refers to the ₹1.25 lakh section 112A threshold, but it is not a complete tax-rate guide. Tax law and guidance can change. Surcharge, cess, transaction conditions, investor status and individual circumstances can affect the result; the threshold is not a tax-free allowance for every purpose. Check the law applicable to your transfer date or consult a tax professional before relying on a calculation.
