How to Interpret Isothermal Microcalorimetry Results for Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Read an isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) trace as a time-aligned record of heat flow, not as a standalone safety verdict. First align the trace with the cell’s charge, discharge and rest periods, then compare it with a matched control run. A rising baseline, recurring exotherms or increasing cycle-to-cycle heat can signal growing parasitic reactions and justify investigation. None of those patterns, by themselves, proves lithium plating, a dendrite, an internal short circuit or imminent thermal runaway.

Interpretation depends on the chemistry, cell format, state of charge, temperature, aging history, cycling program, sample mounting and instrument treatment. The frequently cited overcharge demonstration from TA Instruments is a two-cell NMC/graphite coin-cell application note, useful for learning the method but not for setting universal alarm limits.

What an isothermal microcalorimeter measures

In IMC, a battery is held at an essentially constant temperature while the instrument records heat flow over time. In a cycling experiment, the heat-flow signal is plotted against the same time axis as charge current, discharge current, cell voltage and open-circuit rests. That alignment lets you ask which thermal features are tied to normal electrochemical operation and which appear, grow or persist outside the expected pattern.

The method is sensitive to small thermal effects from reactions that may not yet produce a distinctive voltage signature. It can therefore reveal parasitic activity while a cell still appears electrically normal. A heat signal is the combined thermal result of the cell and its measurement setup, however. The trace does not identify one chemical mechanism without supporting evidence.

What the trace can and cannot establish

  • It can show that heat generation changes with time, state of charge or a cycling event.
  • It can show whether a feature is repeatable, accumulating or diverging from a control.
  • It can help identify when instability begins relative to an overcharge or other protocol change.
  • It cannot, on its own, image lithium deposits, prove a dendrite, locate an internal short or predict a fixed number of days to failure.

Use mechanism names as hypotheses until voltage behavior, coulombic efficiency, parasitic-heat analysis, post-test inspection or another independent method supports them.

Record the test context before interpreting any peak

Two traces are not directly comparable if their test conditions differ in ways that change reaction rates or heat transfer. Put the following information beside every plot and data file.

Context item What to record Why it changes interpretation
Cell identity Chemistry, electrode materials, nominal capacity, format and cell identifier Different chemistries and formats produce different reversible and parasitic heat patterns.
Electrochemical state State of charge, voltage limits, current rates, rest duration and aging history A feature at high state of charge or after aging is not equivalent to the same feature in a fresh, partially charged cell.
Temperature Set point, equilibration time and any measured temperature drift Reaction rates and instrument baseline both depend on thermal stability.
Cycle program Charge, discharge, overcharge or other steps, with their exact timing Heat-flow events must be assigned to the correct electrochemical interval.
Mounting and hardware Sample holder, electrical connections, thermal contact and instrument configuration These affect heat transfer, offsets and the apparent size of a feature.
Data treatment Heat-flow sign convention, units, equilibration window, baseline correction, filtering and calibration status Processing choices can change the apparent baseline, noise and peak area.

Instrument-specific calibration and data-processing instructions are essential. No universal IMC noise floor, detection limit or alarm threshold was established for all instruments.

A step-by-step workflow for reading an IMC result

1. Verify the baseline and sign convention

Check that the cell reached thermal equilibrium before the first electrochemical step and that the baseline is stable during a period when no intentional current is applied. Confirm whether positive values represent heat released or heat absorbed on that instrument. Note the units and the time resolution. A drifting baseline can come from thermal equilibration, mounting or instrument behavior rather than a new battery reaction.

2. Establish a matched control

Run a normal or otherwise matched cell through the same temperature program, mounting arrangement and cycle sequence. The control gives you the repeatable profile of the chemistry and apparatus. In the TA Instruments demonstration, the nominal cell produced a repeatable profile that diminished with cycling, while the overcharged cell diverged from it.

3. Mark every electrochemical interval

Place charge, discharge and open-circuit rest boundaries on the heat-flow plot. Mark voltage limits, current changes and any deliberate protocol deviation. A feature that occurs at the same point in every charge may be a normal reaction; a feature that begins during a new overcharge step deserves a different question.

4. Separate repeatable features from new or accumulating heat

Inspect several cycles rather than one. Ask whether the baseline returns after each rest, whether a peak repeats at the same state of charge, and whether its amplitude or duration changes. A transient that appears once and stays near the instrument’s short-term noise is weak evidence. A reproducible divergence from the control is more informative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test for persistence between cycles

Look at the rest periods and at the start of the next cycle. Heat that remains elevated after current stops, or that leaves a progressively higher baseline, is consistent with continuing or accumulating parasitic activity. It is not a unique signature: the cell construction and thermal environment can also affect how quickly heat flow returns to baseline.

6. Corroborate before naming a failure mechanism

Compare the thermal pattern with voltage, capacity, coulombic efficiency and any independent parasitic-heat calculation. Inspect the cell after the test when appropriate. If an internal short is suspected, electrical evidence and physical examination are needed. If lithium plating is suspected, use a method capable of supporting that assignment; the IMC trace alone is indirect.

7. State the scope of the conclusion

Report the chemistry, format, temperature, state of charge, aging condition, cycle program, instrument configuration and control comparison with the interpretation. A conclusion such as “this overcharged NMC/graphite coin cell developed an increasingly unstable heat-flow pattern under this protocol” is defensible. “IMC detects all internal shorts three days early” is not.

How to read the main features of a trace

A rising baseline

A baseline that climbs over successive cycles indicates that the average measured heat flow is increasing. In a controlled cycling study, that pattern can be consistent with more parasitic reaction heat or a change in the cell’s thermal behavior. Check that the rise is not caused by incomplete equilibration, a changed mounting condition, baseline correction or a temperature drift. Compare the same time windows in the control.

Small exothermic events

Small exotherms are most useful when they recur at related electrochemical states or become more frequent or intense. An isolated bump should be compared with the instrument’s noise under the same setup. The TA Instruments example reports exotherms of approximately 1 µW and short-term instrument noise of approximately ±100 nW; those values belong to that particular setup and are not specifications for every IMC system.

Peak growth and changing frequency

Increasing peak magnitude, longer-duration heat release or more frequent events can indicate that a reaction pathway is becoming more active. The pattern becomes stronger evidence when it follows a protocol change and separates from a matched control. It still does not identify whether the cause is plating, electrolyte reaction, separator damage or another process.

Heat during rest

Heat flow during an open-circuit rest can reveal reactions that continue after current stops. Compare the rest signal with the preceding charge or discharge and with later rests. A persistent rest signal is a reason to investigate, not a direct label for a particular fault.

Cycle-to-cycle divergence

Normal cells often show a repeatable profile whose magnitude changes as the cell settles. A cell that progressively departs from that profile deserves attention even if its voltage curve still looks ordinary. The timing of the departure relative to a changed voltage limit or current program is part of the evidence.

What the 2025 overcharge example demonstrates

TA Instruments’ application note MC179, authored by Jeremy May, PhD, compares two NMC/graphite coin cells. One cell was cycled within its standard voltage window; the other was overcharged by 50 mV during a narrow-cycle phase. The control upper limit was 4.20 V, while the overcharged cell reached 4.25 V.

Observation in MC179 How to interpret it What it does not mean
Both cells had elevated heat flow during the first cycle The authors attribute this to solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, a normal early-cell process in their experiment. Every first-cycle heat feature in every chemistry has the same cause.
The nominal cell developed a repeatable profile that diminished with cycling This was the study’s reference behavior under its stated protocol. All healthy cells must show the same curve or rate of decline.
The overcharged cell showed small exotherms and an increasingly elevated heat-flow pattern The divergence was consistent with additional reactions and growing instability under the overcharge condition. The pattern alone proves lithium plating or a dendrite.
Heat-flow magnitude was roughly double over one charge cycle This was the observed change for the studied overcharged cell. A doubling is a universal warning threshold.
Instability appeared about three days before strong electrochemical evidence of an internal short This is the lead time reported for that experiment. IMC universally predicts an internal short three days in advance.

May wrote in the vendor application note: “The electrochemical data showed no characteristic differences until the internal short occurred, but the heat flow displayed significant levels of instability and side reactions from the onset of overcharging.” Treat this as a statement about that application-note experiment, not as an independent standard or regulatory rule.

Separate a thermal observation from a failure diagnosis

Heat flow is an aggregate measurement. Several processes can overlap in the same time window, and the measured signal also includes the thermal response of the cell, holder and electrical connections. Use a staged attribution:

  1. Describe the observation: for example, “the baseline rose during successive high-voltage charges and did not return to the control level during rest.”
  2. List plausible mechanisms: such as increased parasitic reactions, lithium plating or electrolyte reactions, without selecting one prematurely.
  3. Seek independent evidence: examine voltage and coulombic efficiency, calculate parasitic heat where valid, and use inspection or another analytical method suited to the suspected mechanism.
  4. Write a bounded conclusion: identify what the data support, what remains uncertain and which tested conditions apply.

In the MC179 example, the authors inferred lithium plating and possible dendrite-related internal shorts from the overcharge protocol and thermogram pattern, with later electrochemical evidence supporting an internal short. The heat-flow trace was evidence in that chain, not direct imaging of a dendrite.

IMC, ARC and thermal-runaway calorimetry answer different questions

Do not substitute one calorimetry method for another. Their temperature programs and decision questions differ.

Method Typical question What the result can include Important limitation
Isothermal microcalorimetry How does heat generation change during controlled cycling at a fixed temperature? Baseline drift, small exotherms, cycle-to-cycle changes and heat during charge, discharge or rest. It is not, by itself, a unique chemical diagnosis or a thermal-runaway test.
Accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) At what conditions does a cell under thermal-abuse testing begin to self-heat or run away? Runaway onset, self-heating behavior, separator-melting endotherms, pressure release, gas collection, maximum temperature and visual decomposition evidence, depending on the setup. It generally addresses abuse and failure progression rather than the subtle in-operando changes of ordinary cycling.
Fractional thermal-runaway calorimetry How much energy is released, and how is it divided between the casing and vented effluent? Total energy plus conducted and vented fractions when the apparatus is designed to separate them. Results depend on the specialized calorimeter and cell configuration.

A PubMed-indexed 2021 review describes ARC and complementary techniques for characterizing battery-safety hazards. NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center explains that conventional ARC can measure total energy yield during thermal runaway but does not distinguish energy conducted through the casing from energy carried by vented effluents. NASA developed a specialized calorimeter for an 18650 cell to measure those fractions separately. These methods complement IMC; they do not provide the same measurement.

Use a practical evidence ladder

Evidence level Pattern Appropriate action
Baseline check Signal is stable, repeatable and matches the control within the setup’s normal variation. Continue the planned experiment while preserving calibration and control records.
Investigation trigger New exotherms, a rising baseline or persistent rest heat appears and is reproducible. Repeat under the same protocol, verify the instrument and compare electrochemical indicators.
Escalated safety concern Thermal instability grows while voltage, efficiency or other evidence also changes. Follow the laboratory’s battery-safety procedures, stop or isolate testing as required, and use independent diagnostics before assigning a mechanism.

This ladder is deliberately qualitative. No universal numerical threshold was established for IMC instruments, chemistries or cell formats.

Common interpretation errors and their fixes

Calling any heat increase “thermal runaway”

Thermal runaway is an abuse-failure regime, not a synonym for a small change in heat flow during cycling. Describe the observed heat pattern and reserve runaway language for evidence from an appropriate abuse test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the 50 mV overcharge as a general limit

The 4.25 V versus 4.20 V comparison belongs to the two coin cells in MC179. Voltage limits are chemistry- and design-specific; do not transfer that difference to another cell.

Treating the noise figure as an instrument specification

The approximately ±100 nW short-term noise reported by TA Instruments is setup-specific. Measure noise and baseline behavior on your own instrument according to its calibration documentation.

Comparing unlike traces

A fresh pouch cell at one temperature and an aged coin cell at another are not a controlled comparison. Match chemistry, format, state of charge, aging, protocol, temperature and data treatment before interpreting differences.

Ignoring the rest periods

Restricting analysis to current-on intervals can hide continuing reactions. Mark and compare every rest period on the same time axis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overstating a lead time

The roughly three-day interval in MC179 is an observation from one experiment. It is not a guarantee that IMC will provide a fixed warning period.

How to report an IMC interpretation clearly

A reproducible report should include:

  • Cell chemistry, format, identifier, nominal capacity and aging history.
  • State of charge, temperature, equilibration period and thermal-control details.
  • Charge, discharge, rest and overcharge steps, including current and voltage limits.
  • Instrument model or configuration, mounting arrangement, calibration status, sign convention and units.
  • Baseline treatment, filtering, integration windows and any removed data.
  • The matched-control result and the number of cells tested.
  • Heat-flow observations separated from electrochemical observations.
  • Mechanism claims stated as supported, consistent-with or unconfirmed.
  • Any safety action taken and the independent evidence used to justify it.

For example: “Under the stated 4.25 V overcharge protocol, this NMC/graphite coin cell developed recurring approximately 1 µW exotherms and a rising baseline relative to the 4.20 V control. The pattern is consistent with increased parasitic activity; lithium plating and an internal short remain hypotheses requiring corroboration.” That wording preserves the observation, scope and uncertainty.

Evidence boundaries to keep in view

TA Instruments’ MC179 application note was published in 2025 and covers two NMC/graphite coin cells. Its figures illustrate how an overcharge-related divergence can appear, but they do not validate cross-instrument thresholds or a universal failure-prediction algorithm. The PubMed review on ARC was published in 2021. NASA’s “Calorimetry of Lithium-ion Cells During Thermal Runaway” was published on September 4, 2019, and its page was updated July 26, 2023. A 2025 Nature Energy article discusses rapid safety screening with ARC at a high level; detailed claims require the full paper rather than its abstract alone.

No independent standards body or regulator quotation prescribing a universal way to interpret lithium-ion IMC traces was identified. The safest practice is therefore to make the control comparison, protocol alignment and corroborating evidence explicit instead of presenting a single heat-flow number as a pass/fail criterion.
