How to Interpret a Heatwave Trend When Historical Weather Records Are Incomplete

A missing stretch of weather observations does not automatically erase a heatwave trend, but it changes what you can claim. A defensible interpretation starts by defining the heatwave, documenting which observations are missing, keeping the definition and geographic area consistent, testing daytime and nighttime heat separately, and checking whether independent observation-based products or reanalysis show a similar pattern. If those checks cannot be completed, the correct conclusion may be that the record is insufficient to establish a local trend confidently.

What a heatwave trend actually measures

“Heatwave” is not a worldwide fixed temperature cutoff. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says heatwaves are generally defined with local thresholds because unusual and hazardous heat depends on the local climate and conditions. A threshold that is extreme in one place may be ordinary in another.

  • Location: one station, a city, a region, or a gridded area.
  • Period: the exact start and end years, including whether incomplete years are included.
  • Season: for example, May through September rather than the entire calendar year.
  • Event rule: the temperature threshold and the minimum number of consecutive days or nights.
  • Indicator: event count, duration, intensity, hottest daytime maximum, warmest nighttime minimum, or a humidity-aware heat-stress measure.

Two analyses can use the same station record and reach different results simply because they use different definitions. A trend in the number of three-day events above a local 95th-percentile threshold is not the same claim as a trend in the annual highest temperature.

Why daytime heat, warm nights and humidity must be separated

Heat exposure has several dimensions. Daytime maximum temperature describes afternoon heat, while nighttime minimum temperature captures whether people and buildings get relief after sunset. Humidity changes how the body loses heat, so a moisture-inclusive index can identify dangerous conditions that a dry-bulb temperature threshold misses.

WMO guidance emphasizes that excess heat over successive days and nights matters and that no single metric captures every dimension of extreme heat. Treating one metric as a complete measure of “heatwaves” can hide a real change in another.

Daytime maximum temperature

Maximum-temperature events are often the easiest to explain and may capture direct afternoon exposure. Record the threshold, duration rule and whether the threshold is absolute or percentile-based. A percentile threshold should include its baseline period, because changing the baseline changes which days qualify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nighttime minimum temperature

Warm nights can increase cumulative heat stress even when daytime maxima are not exceptional. Analyze minimum temperatures as their own series rather than assuming that daytime and nighttime trends match.

Humidity or thermal-stress indices

Heat index, wet-bulb-related measures and other thermal-stress indices combine temperature with moisture, and some also incorporate wind or radiation. Their required observations may be missing for different years than temperature data. State exactly which variables are available and do not substitute a temperature-only result for a humidity-aware result.

First audit the historical record

Describe the record before describing its trend. A line on a chart can look continuous even when the underlying observations are not.

Map the missing intervals

  • List missing days, months, seasons and entire years.
  • Identify whether gaps cluster during the hottest part of the year.
  • Separate missing daytime maxima from missing nighttime minima and humidity variables.
  • Mark whether the missing values occur at the beginning, middle or end of the period.

A gap during winter may have little effect on a May–September heatwave count, while a gap during the peak warm season can remove entire events. Do not describe a record as “mostly complete” without showing which observations are absent and when.

Check station and network coverage

Record the stations represented in each period and note relocations, changes in instruments, observing times and network density when the dataset documents them. Comparing one set of stations in the early decades with a different set in later decades can create a coverage effect that resembles climate change.

If the analysis uses several stations, show whether the same locations overlap through time. A common-period or common-station analysis can be more comparable than a longer analysis that silently changes its geographic sample. This is an analytical choice, not a universal adjustment prescribed for every dataset.

Read the provider’s documentation

Look for descriptions of quality control, station homogenization, interpolation, duplicate removal, processing changes and version history. If the documentation was not examined, say so. Do not claim that a gap was corrected, filled or homogenized unless the dataset method explicitly says that it was.

Keep comparisons like-for-like

When comparing two periods, products or locations, disclose the following in the chart caption or methods note:

Comparison axis What to report
Definition Absolute or local-percentile threshold, consecutive-day rule and baseline period
Metric Daytime maximum, nighttime minimum, combined temperature or humidity/thermal-stress index
Geography Station, station network, city, region or grid, including coverage changes
Season and years Season analyzed and exact study years
Data type Station observations, observation-based grid, satellite-derived product or model-assisted reanalysis
Outcome Frequency, duration, intensity, spatial extent or a single record event
Sensitivity Whether the result changes under another reasonable definition, period or dataset

These details prevent an apparent disagreement from being mistaken for a contradiction. Two products may cover different areas, use different variables or count different kinds of events.

Use a practical interpretation sequence

1. Write the claim in a fully specified sentence

For example: “At the named station, during May–September from 1980 to 2020, the count of events lasting at least three consecutive days above the local 95th percentile of daily maximum temperature increased.” If you cannot fill in the location, period, season, definition and indicator, the claim is not yet testable.

2. Produce a coverage table

For every year, record the number of available observations, the number of missing observations, the stations contributing data and the variables present. Flag years that cannot support the event rule because too many consecutive days are absent. Keep those flags visible in the analysis rather than silently treating them as ordinary years.

3. Establish a consistent primary series

Apply one definition across the full period wherever the record permits it. Do not change from an absolute threshold to a percentile threshold halfway through the series. If a station moved or the network changed, either limit the comparison to a documented common sample or explain the coverage break and its likely effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add a second defensible indicator

Where readers could reasonably care about another dimension, calculate it separately. A useful pairing is daytime maximum temperature and nighttime minimum temperature. Another is temperature-only events alongside a moisture-inclusive index, provided the required humidity observations are available.

5. Test sensitivity

Repeat the analysis with another reasonable duration rule, baseline or indicator and show whether the direction and scale of the result change. If a conclusion appears only under one narrow definition, report that dependence instead of presenting it as a general heatwave trend.

6. Compare independent products

Use a suitable observation-based gridded dataset or reanalysis as an additional line of evidence. Document its product name, years, geographic coverage, variables and processing. Agreement across genuinely distinct sources strengthens confidence; disagreement should trigger an examination of coverage and method differences, not a choice of whichever answer looks more persuasive.

7. State the conclusion at the strength the record supports

Use wording such as “the available records indicate,” “the station and reanalysis products examined show a consistent direction,” or “the record is too incomplete to establish a local trend confidently.” Do not add a percentage change, significance claim or gap-filling method that was not actually calculated or documented.

What reanalysis can and cannot do

Reanalysis combines observations with numerical weather and climate models to create a physically consistent estimate across space and time. WMO describes it as useful for filling spatial or observational gaps, but it is not a literal replacement for a missing station observation.

A reanalysis value at a location with no thermometer is model-assisted. It reflects the observations assimilated around that location, the model’s physics and the product’s data-assimilation system. Treat it as independent context only when its construction and the station record are genuinely different enough to provide a meaningful check.

When presenting reanalysis alongside station data, label the sources separately. Explain that a match supports the plausibility of the pattern, while a mismatch may reflect station exposure, local topography, grid resolution, missing observations or model behavior.

How the broad climate context should be used

The WMO’s 2022 summary of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report says hot extremes, including heatwaves, have become more frequent and more intense across most land regions since the 1950s, with high confidence that human-induced climate change is the main driver. That is a broad assessed finding, not a numerical estimate for a particular incomplete station record.

The global or continental context can make a local increase physically consistent with the wider pattern, but it cannot establish the size, statistical significance or exact timing of a trend at your station. Regional event-attribution evidence is uneven, and missing observations and limited reliable models constrain some analyses. Local coverage, definition and uncertainty still determine the local conclusion.

Interpreting a possible record extreme

A single record temperature is not the same as a long-term heatwave trend. It requires careful verification of the measurement, instrument exposure, observing procedure, station history and comparison with nearby evidence.

WMO’s 20 December 2023 guidance summary describes collaboration with national meteorological authorities and experts when evaluating potential weather and climate records. Dr Omar Baddour, WMO Chief of Climate Monitoring, said: “Improving the understanding and characterization of extreme weather and climate events is crucial to support disaster risk reduction and the ongoing international Early Warnings for All initiative.” This verification process evaluates potential records; it does not automatically validate every trend dataset.

Correction: Define the event locally or with a clearly described percentile threshold, state the baseline and specify the minimum consecutive days or nights.

Counting missing years as quiet years

Problem: A year with no observations is treated as having zero events.

Correction: Mark it missing or not evaluable. A zero means observations were sufficient and no qualifying event occurred; missing means the event status is unknown.

Assuming missingness is harmless

Problem: Gaps are discussed only as a footnote.

Correction: Show the timing of the gaps and test whether results change when affected years or stations are excluded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combining changing station sets without disclosure

Problem: More stations appear in later decades, making spatial coverage look like a temporal trend.

Correction: Report the network by period and use an explicitly defined common-station or common-area comparison where feasible.

Mixing maximum and minimum temperatures

Problem: A daytime result is described as though it represents all heat exposure.

Correction: Analyze maxima and minima separately and explain what each indicates.

Treating reanalysis as an observation

Problem: A modeled estimate is presented as though a thermometer recorded it.

Correction: Identify the product as model-assisted reanalysis and explain how it complements, rather than replaces, station evidence.

Borrowing a global finding as local proof

Problem: A broad IPCC or WMO conclusion is used to assert a precise local change.

Correction: Use broad findings as context, then base the local statement on the local record, coverage and uncertainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inventing a completeness cutoff

Problem: The analysis claims that a record is valid above a specific percentage of complete days without a documented standard.

Correction: Report the actual missing observations and explain which event calculations remain evaluable. The available guidance does not establish one universal minimum completeness percentage for every heatwave analysis.

What the 2017 U.S. study demonstrates

Bradfield Lyon and Anthony G. Barnston’s peer-reviewed study, “Diverse Characteristics of U.S. Summer Heat Waves,” analyzed May–September heatwaves in the United States from 1979 through 2013. Its value for interpretation is methodological: changing the heat variable changes the apparent behavior.

The study found higher frequency and persistence for heatwaves defined with maximum temperatures than for those based on minimum temperatures, with regional variation. It also reported differences between temperature-only measures and moisture-inclusive measures. Those findings apply to the study’s U.S. scope, years and methods; they are not a universal numerical rule for another country, station or incomplete record.

Use the study as a reason to run sensitivity checks, not as a shortcut to a trend number. A local analysis still needs its own definition, coverage audit and uncertainty statement.

A reporting template for a defensible result

A clear write-up can follow this order:

  1. Claim: identify the location, years, season, heatwave definition and metric.
  2. Coverage: list missing intervals, stations, variables and documented changes in observing practice.
  3. Method: explain how events were counted and how years with insufficient observations were handled.
  4. Sensitivity: show what happens under another reasonable threshold, duration rule, period or metric.
  5. Independent context: compare an observation-based grid or reanalysis and label its model-assisted nature.
  6. Uncertainty: identify the parts of the conclusion limited by missingness, coverage changes or model dependence.
  7. Verdict: use conditional language that matches the evidence.

A concise conclusion might read: “The available station observations indicate more frequent daytime heatwave events during the defined season, and the direction is similar in the comparison product. Because several peak-season intervals are missing and nighttime humidity data are unavailable, the result does not establish a complete trend in nighttime or humid heat.” That wording distinguishes what was measured from what remains unknown.

Decision checklist

  • Is the heatwave definition explicit and locally appropriate?
  • Are threshold, duration, season and baseline stated?
  • Are daytime maxima, nighttime minima and humidity measures distinguished?
  • Are missing days, seasons, years and variables listed?
  • Are station locations, instruments or network coverage changes documented?
  • Were early and late periods compared using a consistent geographic sample?
  • Were results tested with another defensible definition or indicator?
  • Are observation-based products and reanalysis labeled by data type?
  • Is a broad climate finding being used only as context rather than local proof?
  • Does the final wording avoid unsupported percentages, significance claims and gap-filling assumptions?

Bottom line

An incomplete historical record can still support a heatwave trend, but only conditionally. Define the event, expose the gaps, preserve a consistent comparison, separate daytime from nighttime and humidity-related heat, and seek corroboration from genuinely distinct datasets. If those checks reveal that missing peak-season observations or changing coverage could determine the result, report the trend as uncertain rather than filling the evidence gap with a confident local claim.
