How to Integrate Proxmox with Home Assistant for Home Lab Monitoring and Automation

Home Assistant’s built-in Proxmox VE integration can bring virtual machine and container status, resource sensors, and selected power controls into one place. Add automations for alerts or carefully chosen actions, and your lab can handle routine monitoring for you—but the integration does not provision or autonomously manage a whole Proxmox environment. This guide covers the official core integration, not a community add-on, and is based on the documented setup rather than a claim of personal testing.

What the integration can—and cannot—manage

The official Home Assistant Proxmox VE integration connects Home Assistant to a Proxmox VE node and exposes information about its virtual machines and containers. Depending on permissions and available entities, you can monitor status and resource use, receive alerts, and invoke selected operations such as starting or shutting down a guest.

“Manages itself” is best understood as automating defined monitoring and response tasks. Home Assistant can react to the entities it receives; the integration is not a general-purpose Proxmox provisioning system. The integration page displayed adoption of 1.5% of active Home Assistant installations when accessed on October 9, 2026; that is a dated page figure, not a timeless adoption rate.

What you need before adding it

  • A running Home Assistant instance and at least one Proxmox VE node with a VM or container. The integration needs a guest to provide entities.
  • The Proxmox host address and a Proxmox identity that has only the permissions your intended use requires.
  • Proxmox’s default API port, 8006, unless your setup uses a different port.

The integration is available through Home Assistant’s standard integration flow; no community custom integration is required for the documented functionality here.

Create a dedicated Proxmox identity

Home Assistant recommends a dedicated Proxmox VE user with minimum required permissions. Avoid using root for an unattended integration. Begin with monitoring, then grant additional access only if you need a specific control.

Monitoring-only access

The Home Assistant documentation says the built-in PVEAuditor role is typically sufficient for monitoring. Check the integration’s current permission guidance against the actions and entities you plan to use.

Permissions for controls

Power actions such as starting, stopping, or rebooting a VM may require VM.PowerMgmt or the broader PVEVMUser role. Snapshot operations may require VM.Snapshot or PVEVMAdmin. Node update entities may require Sys.Modify or PVEAdmin. These broader roles can grant more than one narrow operation; if least privilege matters, build a custom role around the exact privileges required and validate it against the official integration guidance.

Password or API token?

The integration supports password authentication and API tokens. A token is useful for a service account because Proxmox supports separate token permissions, expiration, and revocation. With privilege separation enabled, effective access is the intersection of the user’s and token’s permissions, so both must allow an operation. Proxmox displays the token secret only when it is generated; store it securely at that point. It cannot be retrieved later through the API. See Proxmox user management documentation for token behavior and lifecycle details.

Add Proxmox VE in Home Assistant

  1. In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services > Add Integration.
  2. Search for and select Proxmox VE.
  3. Enter the Proxmox host, authentication details, and any realm or port information requested. The default Proxmox port is 8006.
  4. Set SSL certificate verification to match your Proxmox certificate configuration. Do not disable verification casually; use the option appropriate to your certificate and network.
  5. Complete setup, then inspect the created device and entities. If expected guests are missing, verify that the node has VMs or containers and that the account can see them.

Home Assistant’s setup options and troubleshooting guidance are documented on the Proxmox VE integration page.

Choose useful entities and automations

The integration polls Proxmox data every 60 seconds. Documented entities include VM and container status, CPU, memory, disk, network input and output, uptime, and backup time, duration, and status. Available entities depend on the Proxmox API data and permissions.

Alert when a critical guest is offline

The integration documentation gives an example of alerting when a critical VM remains offline for 15 minutes. Treat that as a documented automation example, not a guarantee that every state change or notification will arrive on an exact schedule. A delay can help avoid reacting to a brief restart or maintenance window.

Other practical uses

  • Show CPU, memory, disk, and network readings on a Home Assistant dashboard to make routine checks easier.
  • Notify yourself when a backup status indicates failure, then investigate the Proxmox backup job rather than assuming the alert identifies the cause.
  • Use a defined condition to start or stop a guest only where the consequences are understood. Require confirmation or keep the action manual for anything disruptive.

These are automation ideas, not claims about a particular lab configuration. Build each one around the entities actually exposed in your installation.

Understand the consequences of power actions

Not all buttons are equivalent. According to the integration’s entity and operation documentation, reboot and shutdown attempt graceful behavior when a guest agent is installed. At node level, those operations attempt graceful shutdown of each VM or LXC.

Stop and Restart are immediate operations. The documentation describes them as stopping a running system immediately, comparable to removing power. Do not put these actions in an unattended automation unless abrupt interruption is acceptable for every affected workload. Snapshots, hibernation, reset, and other controls are also subject to permissions and entity availability.

Troubleshoot missing entities or failed controls

  • Nothing appears: Confirm there is at least one VM or container on the configured node, then check the host, credentials, realm, port, and certificate-verification settings.
  • Monitoring works but a button fails: Check the privilege required for that exact operation before broadening the account’s role. Home Assistant’s troubleshooting section covers power, snapshot, and update entities.
  • A storage sensor or data field is absent: The Proxmox VE API does not expose every storage type and data field fully. API exposure and permissions are reasonable things to investigate, but absence alone does not establish which is responsible.
  • You plan to remove the integration: Remove it from Home Assistant and clean up Proxmox permissions and credentials that are no longer needed; revoke any associated API token if it is no longer in use.

For API-level context, Home Assistant documents its REST API at developers.home-assistant.io/docs/api/rest/. The Proxmox administration guide is available at pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.pdf.
