The right choice depends on whether your site is on WordPress.com or self-hosted and whether Claude needs to read content, create drafts, or make changes. Keep credentials server-side, limit access, and require human approval for consequential actions.
Which Claude–WordPress integration should you use?
These methods are not interchangeable. A first-party connector is the lowest-code option for eligible WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected sites. Developers building WordPress features can use the AI Client provider or a purpose-built plugin. External scripts can authenticate through the REST API, while MCP can expose selected tools to Claude.
| Method | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com Claude connector | Eligible WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected site; low-code site operations | Current plan eligibility and supported actions in the connector listing |
| WordPress AI Client and Anthropic provider | Developers adding AI capabilities to WordPress code | WordPress and PHP versions, provider setup, and API key configuration |
| Custom WordPress plugin | A specific workflow, such as drafting or summarizing selected content | Endpoint permissions, input validation, and human review controls |
| External script using the REST API | Automation running outside WordPress | Authentication flow, HTTPS, account permissions, and credential revocation |
| MCP workflow | Claude using a limited set of tools or site operations | Which MCP server is involved and the exact capabilities it exposes |
1. Use the WordPress.com Claude connector
WordPress.com lists a Claude connector that can find posts, check statistics, draft content, update a page, and retrieve comment threads. The listing says it uses OAuth 2.1 so the agent can access resources the user approved, and that changes are confirmed. Its stated availability is for paid WordPress.com plans and sites connected through Jetpack AI or Complete; check the current connector listing for eligibility and supported actions.
This is not a universal integration for every self-hosted WordPress installation. Use it when your site falls within the listed availability, and confirm that the actions you need are currently supported before relying on it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Use the WordPress AI Client with the Anthropic provider
WordPress’s AI Client provides a framework for developers who want to add AI functionality to WordPress code. Its project documents provider plugins, including an Anthropic provider. This is a building block for plugin functionality, not a turnkey chatbot or content-management interface.
The provider repository’s README says it needs an Anthropic API key and PHP 7.4 or newer. It says WordPress 7.0 and newer needs no additional changes, while WordPress 6.9 requires the wordpress/php-ai-client package. Check the provider’s current installation instructions against your installed WordPress and PHP versions because requirements can change.

Keep the API key in server-side configuration, such as the environment variable or constant configuration described by the provider. Do not place it in browser JavaScript or published code.
3. Build a purpose-specific WordPress plugin feature
A custom plugin can call Claude for a narrowly defined task—for example, generating a draft from selected material or summarizing a page. WordPress’s AI Client material describes using its provider and connector infrastructure, and its core announcement recommends individual REST endpoints for specific AI features. A dedicated server-side endpoint lets the site control what is sent to Claude and keeps the provider secret out of the browser.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Define one task. Specify which content the feature can read and what output it should return.
- Restrict access. Require the necessary WordPress capability and expose only the content and actions the feature needs.
- Validate requests. Check user input and the content being sent before making a provider call.
- Separate generation from publication. Return a draft for review rather than silently publishing it or changing settings.
WordPress’s AI Client announcement provides context on its framework and the use of feature-specific REST endpoints. The exact user-facing feature depends on the plugin you build; using the provider alone does not create a documented front-end interface.
4. Connect an external script through the WordPress REST API
A script running outside WordPress can use the REST API for authenticated content operations. For a self-hosted site, WordPress Application Passwords are per-application credentials that can be revoked individually and are separate from the user’s main password. Create a dedicated account with only the permissions the integration needs, store its credential in a secret store or protected server configuration, and use HTTPS. WordPress warns that Basic Auth credentials can be intercepted if sent without encryption.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Follow WordPress’s REST API authentication guidance for setup. Avoid using an administrator account simply for convenience, and revoke the Application Password when the integration is retired.
For WordPress.com, use the WordPress.com API’s documented authentication flow and scopes rather than assuming self-hosted Application Password instructions apply. The API documentation says content operations requiring a logged-in user need an authentication token.

5. Choose an MCP workflow carefully
MCP is a way to connect Claude to tools, but a “WordPress MCP server” does not necessarily provide site administration. WordPress.com’s connector listing describes a server for approved site operations. Separately, WordPress.org documents an MCP server for plugin guidelines, readme validation, and submission status; that is a development-resource connection, not a general-purpose way to manage a site.
For a custom bridge, expose only the actions the workflow requires, use narrowly scoped credentials, and make destructive or public-facing changes require explicit review. Confirm what a particular server can actually read or change before granting access.
Quick Recap
Secure the integration before enabling write access
- Protect secrets. Keep Anthropic API keys and WordPress credentials on the server or in an approved secret configuration, never in public JavaScript or published code.
- Use the right authentication. For self-hosted REST API access, use HTTPS and a dedicated, revocable Application Password; for WordPress.com, follow its token flow.
- Minimize permissions. Limit the WordPress user, endpoint, and tool set to the resources and actions required. Do not grant broad administrator access by default.
- Treat retrieved content as untrusted. Pages, comments, and documents can contain prompt-injection instructions. Anthropic’s prompt-injection guidance recommends layered defenses, including input screening and safe handling of untrusted tool content.
- Keep a person in the approval loop. Review generated content before publication and require confirmation before consequential settings, user, or commerce changes. The WordPress.com listing describes confirmation for its changes; custom integrations need their own controls.
- Test recovery. Before enabling write access, test on a staging site and confirm backups and a rollback path.
- Maintain model configuration. Check Anthropic’s model lifecycle documentation when deploying and during maintenance. Model identifiers can be deprecated or retired, and requests to retired models fail.
