How to Install Zabbix to Monitor Remote Servers Securely

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the Zabbix server and frontend on a supported Unix-like host, connect a supported database and web server, deploy an agent or Agent 2 on each remote machine, and then choose an active-agent, passive-agent, or proxy design. For a secure deployment, keep monitoring traffic on private or tightly filtered networks, allow only the required connections, encrypt component traffic with certificates or pre-shared keys (PSKs), and protect the separate web interface with HTTPS.

The safest design is usually active checks for servers that can make outbound connections but should not accept inbound monitoring traffic. Use passive checks when the Zabbix server or a proxy can reach the agent reliably, and use a proxy when a remote site needs local collection, buffering, or network isolation.

What a secure Zabbix deployment contains

Zabbix monitoring is a chain of components rather than a single installer. The central Zabbix server stores configuration, evaluates items and triggers, and receives data. The frontend is the browser-based administration interface. A database stores configuration, history, trends, events, and inventory. A web server such as Apache or Nginx publishes the frontend. Each monitored machine runs Zabbix Agent or Agent 2, unless a proxy collects the data locally.

The server and frontend should run on a supported Linux or other Unix-like platform listed by Zabbix. Windows is supported for agents and Agent 2, not as the normal Zabbix-server platform. Agent 2’s documented minimum Windows baseline is Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016, reflecting its supported Go toolchain.

Traffic paths and default ports

Connection Typical direction Default TCP port When it is needed
Passive agent check Server or proxy to agent 10050 Only when the server or proxy polls an agent directly
Server, proxy, or active-agent channel Agent/proxy to server, or server to proxy as applicable 10051 For server and proxy communications and active-agent submissions

These are daemon ports, not a requirement to expose a host publicly. Zabbix’s installation guidance says to open only ports used by the components you actually run, restrict each rule to the specific source and destination hosts, and never expose Zabbix ports directly to the Internet.

Choose the monitoring topology before installing

Topology determines which side must initiate a connection, where firewall rules belong, and whether a remote outage should be buffered locally. Decide this before writing agent configuration or security-group rules.

Active agent checks

An active agent initiates the connection to the Zabbix server. This is generally the easiest pattern for a remote server behind NAT, a restrictive inbound firewall, or a zero-trust network: the monitored host needs an outbound path, while the server does not need to reach the host directly. The agent requests its active-check configuration, then submits values on the established channel.

Active checks do not eliminate the need for authentication. Configure the agent’s active-server destination and encryption mode, and make the corresponding host definition identify the same server address or name.

Passive agent checks

With passive checks, the server or a proxy opens the connection to the agent and requests each item. This can be simple on a flat, trusted network, but it requires reliable inbound reachability to the monitored host and a firewall rule limited to the known Zabbix server or proxy addresses. It is a poor fit when remote machines change addresses or sit behind an inbound-blocking edge.

Zabbix proxy collection

A proxy sits near a remote site, polls local agents, stores collected data, and forwards it to the central server. It is useful when a branch has many hosts, intermittent WAN connectivity, or a policy that permits one controlled connection instead of many cross-site connections. A proxy also provides site-level isolation: local agent traffic can remain inside the branch while only the proxy’s server connection crosses the WAN.

Design Best fit Main firewall implication Trade-off
Active agent to server Remote hosts with outbound connectivity but no safe inbound path Permit outbound traffic from each agent to the server or proxy Less direct polling control; agent must reach the destination
Passive agent from server Stable, reachable hosts on a controlled network Permit inbound agent connections only from the server or proxy Requires inbound reachability and address management
Proxy at remote site Branches, large remote groups, or unreliable WAN links Keep agent traffic local; permit the proxy’s controlled server path Adds another component to patch, monitor, and secure

Prepare the server, database, and web tier

Use a supported Unix-like operating system and select a database combination listed on Zabbix’s requirements page. Supported choices include MySQL or Percona, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and combinations involving TimescaleDB. The exact combinations vary by Zabbix release, so check the requirements for the release you intend to deploy rather than assuming every database works with every version.

Install PHP and either Apache or Nginx for the frontend, including the PHP extension that matches your selected database. A database connection that works from the command line is not sufficient if the PHP runtime lacks the corresponding extension.

  • Reserve a stable DNS name or address for the Zabbix server. Agents and proxies need a destination that will not change unexpectedly.
  • Use a supported long-term-support database release where one is available for your chosen Zabbix version.
  • Size storage from item count, polling interval, history and trend retention, and event volume. Zabbix publishes sizing examples, but there is no single universal disk figure.
  • Synchronize time on the server, database host, proxies, and monitored machines. Alert timestamps and TLS validation are difficult to troubleshoot when clocks drift.
  • Define administrative roles and a backup location before collecting production history.

Install the Zabbix server and frontend

The official Zabbix repository provides packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Raspbian. Repository packages are normally preferable to an ad-hoc source build because they provide a supported upgrade path and repeatable dependency handling.

  1. Select the exact release and operating-system repository. Match the repository to the distribution and Zabbix release you have approved. Do not mix repositories for different major releases.
  2. Install the server, frontend, database integration, and web-server integration packages. Select the package variant matching your database backend and install the required PHP database extension.
  3. Create the Zabbix database and account. Use a dedicated database principal with only the privileges required by the Zabbix schema and runtime. Keep the password in a protected secret store or root-readable configuration file, not in a shared shell history.
  4. Load the schema supplied with the package. Run the release-matched schema and initial data procedure documented for your selected database. A schema from another Zabbix release can produce startup or upgrade failures.
  5. Configure the server daemon. Set the database connection, server identity, log location, and any proxy or script policy you have approved. Keep configuration files readable only by the service account and administrators who need them.
  6. Configure the frontend. Point its PHP configuration at the same database, set the correct timezone, and complete the web installer. Publish it through Apache, Nginx, or a reverse proxy rather than binding an administrative interface directly to the public Internet.
  7. Start and enable services. Start the database, web server, and Zabbix server in dependency order, then enable them at boot. Confirm that the server can connect to the database and that the frontend loads without PHP extension errors.

Keep the frontend’s browser path separate from component encryption. Zabbix TLS protects communications among Zabbix components; it does not encrypt the connection between a user’s browser and the frontend. Configure HTTPS on the web server or reverse proxy, redirect HTTP where appropriate, and apply normal web-session protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install and configure an agent on each remote server

Use the same official repository approach for each operating system, then choose Zabbix Agent or Agent 2. Agent 2 is available on supported Unix-like systems and has the documented Windows 10 or Server 2016 minimum baseline. Install only the agent package and plugins required for the metrics you intend to collect.

  1. Install the repository and agent package. Select the package built for the host’s distribution and CPU architecture. Avoid copying a binary built for a different release.
  2. Set the server identity. For passive checks, the agent’s allowed-server setting must contain the Zabbix server or proxy addresses that may connect. For active checks, set the active-server destination to the server or proxy that will receive submissions.
  3. Choose the agent interface. Bind to the intended private address or interface. Do not bind a monitoring daemon to a public address unless a documented, tightly controlled design requires it.
  4. Configure encryption before production data flows. Select certificate or PSK mode and set the matching incoming and outgoing policy described below.
  5. Restrict agent features. Review remote-command and user-parameter settings. Permit only the commands and scripts you have explicitly approved, and treat every enabled remote action as privileged code execution.
  6. Start the service and verify local health. Check the service log, listening address, permissions on key files, and host firewall before attempting a remote check.

Add the remote host in the Zabbix frontend

  1. Open the host-management area in the frontend and create a host with a unique, descriptive name.
  2. Attach the operating-system template that matches the installed agent and the metrics you want. Templates supply items, triggers, discovery rules, and graphs; review them before enabling optional checks.
  3. Add the agent interface using the private IP address or resolvable DNS name that the selected topology can actually reach. For active checks, the interface still documents the host identity even though the agent initiates the session.
  4. Set the host’s encryption mode to match the agent or proxy. A host expecting a certificate will not successfully authenticate a PSK-only agent, and a host configured for unencrypted traffic should not be used as a shortcut around a required TLS policy.
  5. Save the host, then wait for configuration synchronization and the first item results. Confirm that the displayed address, template, and encryption indicators correspond to the machine you intended to monitor.

Secure the network path with least-privilege firewall rules

Write rules from the topology, not from a blanket “allow Zabbix” policy. Permit only the daemon ports required by the components in use, and limit each rule to known source addresses, destination addresses, and interfaces. A remote site using active agents may need no inbound agent rule at all; a passive design does.

  • Place server and proxy addresses in explicit firewall objects rather than broad network ranges.
  • Filter both host firewalls and cloud or perimeter security groups; one permissive layer can undo the other layer’s restriction.
  • Do not publish monitoring ports through a public load balancer or port-forwarding rule.
  • Log denied attempts during rollout, then review and reduce temporary exceptions.
  • When a proxy is used, allow local agent traffic only inside the site and restrict the proxy’s central connection to the approved server address.

The official guidance is direct: “Open only the ports required by the components you actually run, and restrict each firewall rule to the specific hosts that need to connect.” It also states, “Do not expose Zabbix ports directly to the internet.”

Enable TLS encryption between Zabbix components

Zabbix supports certificate-based and PSK-based encryption between the server, proxies, agents, web service, sender, and getter utilities. Encryption uses the existing daemon listening ports; it does not require a second set of monitoring ports. Supported TLS versions are 1.2 and 1.3, depending on the cryptographic library used by the platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose certificates or PSKs

Method Strength Operational cost Use when
Pre-shared key Simple shared-secret authentication and encryption Each secret must be generated, stored, distributed, and rotated safely You need straightforward onboarding for a controlled number of hosts
Certificates Identity can be tied to a certificate and private key Requires a certificate authority, issuance, renewal, revocation, and hostname planning You operate many hosts or already have certificate lifecycle management

Do not treat PSKs as harmless configuration text. Zabbix stores PSKs in the database in plain text. Protect database access, backups, exports, and administrator accounts, and define a rotation process. Certificate private keys are read by Zabbix components at startup, so use strict ownership and file permissions and protect the backup copies.

Match TLSConnect and TLSAccept

TLSConnect controls the encryption types an outgoing connection may use. TLSAccept controls the connection types a component accepts when another component connects to it. Configure both sides deliberately: an active agent’s outgoing policy must be accepted by the server or proxy, while a passive agent’s incoming policy must permit the server or proxy’s selected method.

  1. Generate a unique PSK and identity, or issue a certificate and private key for each component according to your organization’s identity policy.
  2. Store secrets and keys in files readable by the relevant Zabbix service account and administrators only. Verify permissions after package installation and after every restore.
  3. Set the agent, proxy, or server’s outgoing and incoming TLS policies.
  4. Enter the same identity and PSK in the host definition, or configure the certificate subject and trust chain expected by the peer.
  5. Restart the affected component and inspect its log for handshake, identity, certificate-chain, or protocol-version errors.
  6. After successful testing, remove any temporary unencrypted allowance instead of leaving it as a fallback.

TLS adds connection setup overhead. If encrypted checks or remote scripts begin timing out, increase timeouts cautiously after confirming CPU, network latency, and item execution time. A larger timeout should not be used to conceal a broken route or an overloaded agent.

Verify reachability and data freshness

Test in layers so a failure points to one boundary instead of being treated as a mysterious “Zabbix problem.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Route and firewall: From the initiating component, verify DNS resolution, routing, and that the permitted port is reachable. For passive checks, test from the server or proxy; for active checks, test the agent’s outbound route.
  2. Daemon state: Confirm the agent or proxy is running, listening or initiating as designed, and writing no permission or configuration errors.
  3. TLS identity: Check that the host’s encryption mode, PSK identity or certificate subject, trust chain, and key permissions agree on both ends.
  4. Frontend status: Open the host’s latest-data and availability views. Confirm that item timestamps advance at the expected interval and that the correct template is attached.
  5. Item execution: For a failed item, inspect its key, permissions, timeout, and local dependency before changing global settings.
Symptom Likely boundary Focused action
Agent unavailable and no connection log Route or firewall Check the initiating side’s address, rule scope, DNS, and listening state
TLS handshake or “connection type” error Encryption mismatch Compare TLSConnect, TLSAccept, certificate trust, or PSK identity and permissions
Host is available but values are stale Item scheduling or execution Inspect item interval, timeout, local permissions, and agent log
Frontend loads but setup cannot reach the database PHP or database integration Verify the matching PHP extension, credentials, socket or address, and database grants
Remote scripts time out only after TLS is enabled Connection setup or script duration Measure latency and execution time, then tune the specific timeout conservatively

Operate the installation safely after rollout

Protect secrets and backups

Database credentials, PSKs, certificate keys, exported host definitions, and backups can all recreate monitoring trust. Restrict file permissions, database roles, backup repositories, and frontend administrator access. Rotate PSKs and certificates on a schedule and immediately after suspected exposure. Test restoration without publishing secrets into logs or tickets.

Control upgrades and configuration drift

Keep the server, frontend, database integration, agents, and proxies within the compatibility range of the chosen Zabbix release. Upgrade repository packages through a change-controlled process, read the release-specific database migration notes, and stage agent changes before changing the server. Record which hosts use active checks, passive checks, certificates, or PSKs so a firewall or TLS change does not strand a remote site.

Scale storage and collection deliberately

More items and shorter intervals increase database writes, history volume, network traffic, and event processing. Review retention for history and trends, remove unused templates and item prototypes, and monitor database growth. A proxy can reduce cross-site connection count and buffer outages, but it does not remove the need to size its local storage and monitor its queue.

Deployment checklist

  • Supported Unix-like host selected for the server and frontend.
  • Supported database, PHP extension, and Apache or Nginx combination installed.
  • Official repository selected for the exact distribution and Zabbix release.
  • Active, passive, or proxy topology documented before firewall changes.
  • Agent or Agent 2 installed on each target, with matching server and active-server settings.
  • Operating-system template, interface address, and encryption mode set in the frontend.
  • Only required monitoring connections permitted between known addresses.
  • Zabbix component traffic encrypted with a certificate or PSK; browser-to-frontend traffic protected with HTTPS.
  • Private-key permissions, PSK database access, backups, and rotation procedures reviewed.
  • Reachability, TLS handshake, agent availability, item freshness, and timeout behavior tested.

A secure installation is therefore not just a successful package install. It is a matched set of topology, firewall scope, host identity, TLS policy, web protection, and operational controls. Make those decisions first, then let the package installation implement the design rather than becoming the design.
