How to Install World of Warcraft and Choose the Right Realm

Install every current World of Warcraft version through Blizzard’s Battle.net desktop app: select World of Warcraft, choose the game version above Install, select the account when prompted, and then install and launch it. Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, and Cataclysm Classic are separate installations with different minimum requirements, and the version list can change over time.

Choose your realm only after confirming the game version and asking your friends or guild where they play. In Modern WoW, choose Normal unless role-playing is a regular part of what you want; choose RP when you specifically want that community. In Classic, same-realm coordination is especially important because characters can group only with others on the same realm.

What you need before installing

You need a Battle.net account and the Battle.net desktop app. Blizzard’s official installation instructions state that “All versions and game modes of World of Warcraft are installed through the Battle.net desktop app.” The app is Blizzard’s control panel for downloading, updating, launching, and switching between the available WoW versions.

Have these decisions ready before you start:

  • Game version: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic may appear in the launcher. Blizzard can change the available list, so use the labels shown in your current client.
  • Account: If your Battle.net login has more than one active WoW account, you will need to select the one you intend to use.
  • Realm plan: Ask friends or your guild which realm and version they use before creating a character. Realm choice affects whom you can play with, particularly in Classic.
  • Storage and hardware: Each version is installed separately and has its own minimum system requirements. Check the requirements associated with the selected version rather than assuming that one installation’s requirements apply to all of them.

For the current sequence and access rules, see Blizzard Support’s How to Install World of Warcraft and Blizzard Entertainment’s New Players Starter Guide: Welcome to World of Warcraft, published February 25, 2026.

Install World of Warcraft in Battle.net

1. Download Battle.net and create or sign in to an account

Download the Battle.net desktop app from Blizzard, install it for your operating system, and sign in. If you do not have a Battle.net account, create one in the app’s sign-in flow. The app is required even if you intend to play only a Classic version.

2. Open the World of Warcraft page

In Battle.net, select World of Warcraft from the games list. Do not select a different Blizzard game and expect its installer to discover WoW automatically; the WoW page contains the version selector and installation controls.

3. Select the game version before clicking Install

Use the game-version menu above the Install button. Blizzard’s support documentation currently identifies Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, and Cataclysm Classic. Your launcher may display a different or expanded list as Blizzard adds, retires, or renames game modes. Read the label carefully before proceeding: a Classic installation is not the same client as Modern WoW.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the account selector appears, choose the active WoW account you want to use. This matters when one Battle.net login contains multiple game licenses or accounts.

4. Start the installation

Click Install, review the destination folder and any available options, and confirm. The Battle.net app downloads the selected version and creates its files. Installation time depends on your connection, storage speed, available disk space, and the size of the current build; Blizzard does not provide one universal time because the client and updates change.

5. Launch with Play

When the installation and initial updates finish, the button changes to Play. Click it to launch the selected version. The first launch can include additional updates or account checks, so leave Battle.net open until the game reaches its login or character screen.

6. Install another version separately

To play a different version, return to the World of Warcraft page, choose the other entry in the version menu, and install it separately. Blizzard says each game version is a separate installation and that minimum system requirements can differ between versions. Selecting Classic later does not convert an existing Modern WoW installation; it starts the separate client’s installation process.

Access, subscriptions, and the level-20 boundary

Blizzard’s current support information describes different access terms for Modern WoW and Classic:

Version What Blizzard currently states Practical implication
Modern WoW Free to download and play through level 20 You can install and begin playing without paid game time, but progressing beyond level 20 requires a subscription or game time.
WoW Classic versions Game time or a subscription is required to install and play Arrange paid access before expecting a Classic installation or session to work.

These are product rules reported by Blizzard Support at the time of the cited article, not a permanent guarantee. Check the current Battle.net client and Blizzard account pages before paying, because access terms can change. The level-20 limit applies to Modern WoW’s current free access described by Blizzard; it is not a statement that Classic has the same trial.

Choose a realm in the right order

A realm is the game world in which your characters are created and where realm-based social systems operate. The safest choice is not a historical “best” server list; it is the realm that fits your version, friends, and preferred community.

1. Start with friends and your guild

Ask each person where they play and write down both the realm name and the game version. “We play on Stormwind” is not enough information if the name is being confused with a different version or if players are using separate Battle.net accounts. Blizzard’s new-player guide explicitly recommends choosing the realm where your friends play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an established guild has invited you, use the guild’s exact realm and version. A realm with a familiar group is usually more useful to a new player than an allegedly busy realm where you know nobody.

2. Confirm Modern WoW versus Classic

Realm interaction rules are not identical across versions. A friend playing Modern WoW and another playing WoW Classic may not be able to meet simply by choosing realms with similar names. Return to the launcher and verify the selected version before creating your character, then confirm that your friends are using that same version.

3. Decide whether role-playing is a real goal

For Modern WoW, Blizzard’s new-player guide describes two realm types relevant to new players:

Realm type What it means in Blizzard’s guide Choose it when
Normal Uses the Normal ruleset. Players can participate in open-world player-versus-player combat through War Mode. You want the standard Modern WoW community and do not intend to make role-playing a regular part of your play.
RP Intended for players who want to role-play and uses the Normal ruleset. You want role-playing to be part of the realm’s social culture, not merely an occasional experiment.

Choose based on how you expect to play, not on an old guide’s description of realm categories. Blizzard’s current guide is the relevant reference for these labels; older explanations may describe rules that no longer match the live game.

Rank #4
World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth - PC Standard Edition
  • Enter a world divided
  • Recruit Allied races
  • Plunder Uncharted islands
  • Storm the warfronts

4. Apply Classic’s same-realm constraint

Blizzard’s new-player guide states that in WoW Classic, characters can group only with others on the same realm. For a Classic group, raid team, dungeon party, or guild, the realm name must match exactly. Verify it before creating a character, because a later character on another realm will not solve the original coordination problem without additional choices about where to play.

5. Check live availability in the client

Realm availability can change. Use the realm list displayed by the current game client when you create a character. A realm that appears in an old article may be unavailable, renamed, connected to another realm, or unsuitable for a newly created character. If a friend reports that a realm is full or temporarily restricted, follow the client’s current status instead of relying on a saved screenshot.

What the realm list can and cannot tell you

There is no verified current “best population” ranking here

Blizzard does not provide a current official realm-by-realm population ranking in the sources cited for this guide. Therefore, no realm can responsibly be labeled the busiest, healthiest, or best populated today based on this information. Third-party estimates may use different definitions, dates, and samples, so do not treat them as official Blizzard counts.

If population is important to you, inspect the live realm list and look for current recruitment or activity discussions in Blizzard’s community channels. Treat those conversations as timely signals rather than permanent measurements, and still prioritize the realm where your friends or guild already play.

Connected realms explain why names are not simple population containers

Blizzard introduced Connected Realms to link realms so players could share activities such as guilds, the Auction House, raids, dungeons, and quests. The original announcement, Patch 5.4 Feature Preview: Connected Realms, was published August 5, 2013. It is useful historical background for understanding why two realm names may participate in shared systems, but it does not establish today’s realm links, activity rules, or relative populations.

Best Value
World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria - PC/Mac - (Obsolete)
  • Master the Path of the Monk - Learn the mystic powers of the Monk, World of Warcraft's newest playable class. Destroy foes with the Windwalker's devastating attacks, replenish allies with the Mistweaver's spiritual energies, and shrug off enormous damage with the Brewmaster's unyielding strength.
  • Battle to level 90 - Ascend to new heights of power as you explore the verdant reaches of the Jade Forest, war with the terrible Yaungol on Kun-Lai Summit, and unlock the secrets of the Mogu'shan Vaults.
  • Unleash the Mighty Pandaren - Set out as a member of the enigmatic Pandaren -- World of Warcraft's first neutral race -- and join the ranks of either the Horde or Alliance as you enter the conflict brewing on Pandaria's shores.
  • Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.

Do not infer a current population from a realm name alone. Check the live client and current Blizzard information for the version you are actually installing.

A practical realm-selection workflow

  1. Write down your version. Before opening the character-creation screen, record Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, or Cataclysm Classic as shown by Battle.net.
  2. Ask your group for exact details. Request the realm name, version, faction or character plan if relevant to your group, and the guild name if one exists.
  3. Open the realm list in that same client. Confirm that the realm appears and note any availability or restriction message shown by Blizzard.
  4. Choose Normal or RP for Modern WoW. Use Normal for the standard ruleset experience; select RP when role-playing is a central expectation.
  5. Match the realm exactly for Classic. Because Classic same-realm grouping is restricted, do not create a character on a similarly named realm as a workaround.
  6. Check with the group one last time. Send the exact spelling and version before finalizing the character. This catches errors caused by selecting the wrong tab or client.
  7. Create the character only after the check. Realm choice is easiest to get right before you invest time in leveling and social commitments.

Troubleshooting common installation problems

“I can’t find where to download WoW.”

Open the Battle.net desktop app, sign in, and select World of Warcraft in the games list. The download control is on that page, not on a generic website installer. Choose a version from the menu above Install; the available entries may change as Blizzard updates its products.

“I bought the game but I don’t see the Install option.”

First check that you are signed into the Battle.net account containing the purchase or active game time. Then select World of Warcraft and choose the intended version from the version menu. If another account is listed, select the active account associated with your access. For Modern WoW, Blizzard currently allows free play through level 20, while progression beyond that requires game time or a subscription; Classic versions require game time or a subscription to install and play according to Blizzard Support.

The launcher says Install, but the files are already on my computer

Do not immediately download a second copy. Blizzard instructs users to choose Locate the game and select the existing game folder. After Battle.net verifies that folder, it should use the existing files and download only what is missing or outdated. Select the folder containing the game’s installed files, not a parent folder that merely contains unrelated downloads.

“I installed WoW, but I want to play WoW Classic instead.”

Return to the World of Warcraft page in Battle.net and use the version selector above the button. Select the Classic entry you want, then click Install for that version. Blizzard treats versions as separate installations, so the Modern WoW files do not become Classic files. Confirm that your account has the game time or subscription required for Classic access.

The wrong realm appears during character creation

Exit character creation and verify the game version in Battle.net first. Then compare the exact realm name with your friends’ information. In Classic, a similar-looking realm name is not sufficient because grouping is limited to the same realm. For Modern WoW, also verify whether your group expects a Normal or RP community.

How to avoid expensive or frustrating mistakes

  • Do not install first and ask about the realm later. Downloading the client is reversible; creating a character and joining a guild on the wrong realm can disrupt your group plans.
  • Do not use historical population lists as current facts. Realm activity and availability change, and no current official ranking is established by the cited Blizzard material.
  • Do not mix version names. “Classic” is not one universal client. Select the exact entry shown in Battle.net and confirm it with your group.
  • Do not assume one version’s requirements cover another. Blizzard says each version has separate minimum system requirements.
  • Do not reinstall blindly. Use Locate the game when the files already exist, which avoids unnecessary downloads and duplicate storage use.
  • Do not treat RP as a cosmetic label. Select an RP realm when you want role-playing to be part of the community experience; otherwise Normal is the straightforward Modern WoW choice described by Blizzard’s guide.

Final checklist before you press Play

  • Battle.net is installed and you are signed into the correct account.
  • World of Warcraft is selected in the app.
  • The intended version is selected above Install.
  • You have checked the access requirement: Modern WoW is currently free through level 20, while paid game time or a subscription is required beyond that; Classic requires paid access to install and play.
  • Your friends’ realm and game version match your selections.
  • For Modern WoW, you have chosen Normal or RP intentionally.
  • For Classic, you have confirmed the exact same realm your group uses.
  • If Battle.net found existing files, you used Locate the game instead of starting an unnecessary reinstall.

Once those checks pass, click Play. The reliable formula is simple: install through Battle.net, select the version first, coordinate the realm with your group, and use the live client—not an old population list—to confirm what is available.
