The quickest approach is to sign in to your hosting dashboard and look for a WordPress installer or a preinstalled WordPress option. If your provider does not offer one, install WordPress manually by creating a MySQL or MariaDB database, uploading the WordPress files to the correct web location, and completing the browser-based setup. The exact buttons and folder names vary by host, so confirm account-specific details with the provider when the dashboard does not make them clear.
Check compatibility before installing
WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. These are the current recommendations shown on the WordPress requirements page. WordPress may still run on older software, but that page identifies PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5 as legacy versions that are no longer supported upstream and can expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Treat the version information as time-sensitive: check the requirements page again immediately before installing or choosing a hosting plan.

An older WordPress “Before You Install” guide lists PHP 7.4 or newer, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.3 or newer, and HTTPS. That is older prerequisite documentation, not the current recommended baseline; use the newer requirements page when evaluating a new account.

Decide where the site should live
Choose the final address before you upload anything. For a site at https://example.com/, WordPress files belong in the document root assigned to example.com. For a site at https://example.com/blog/, create or select a blog subdirectory under that domain’s web root and place the files there. The WordPress getting-started guide uses this root-versus-subdirectory distinction when discussing site planning.
Folder names are not universal. One host may use public_html; another may use a domain-specific directory or a path visible only in its control panel. Do not guess. The manual installation guide says to ask the hosting provider or system administrator when the web root is unclear. Installing into the wrong folder can leave the domain showing a default hosting page even though the files uploaded successfully.

WordPress says that “Many web hosts offer tools to automatically install WordPress for you” in its installation FAQ. Some accounts include WordPress already, while others expose an installer in the control panel. The tool may be labelled WordPress, Softaculous, Installatron, APS, or another provider-specific name. The hosting documentation explains that generic hosting and WordPress-specific hosting can provide different levels of setup assistance.

Use the automatic route when it is available and you do not need to control every file and database step. Use the manual route when the account has no installer, when an installer fails, or when you need to place WordPress in a specific directory and understand the underlying configuration.
Install WordPress with the hosting dashboard
The labels below are a conceptual sequence rather than a universal screenshot guide. Providers change their control panels, and a cPanel-based account can display different icons or menu names from another account. If your panel has a search box, search for WordPress, application installer, website installer, Softaculous, Installatron, or APS.

- Sign in to the hosting control panel. Open the dashboard supplied with your hosting account, not the WordPress administration area. If the provider supplied WordPress in advance, it may show a site-management button instead of an installation button.
- Open the application installer. Select WordPress and read the version, domain, and path fields before continuing. An installer may also show a language selector, database-prefix field, or options for automatic updates. The official automated-installation documentation gives examples for APS/Plesk, Installatron, and Softaculous, but those examples do not cover every host.
- Select the domain. Choose the domain or subdomain that should display the site. Confirm that it is mapped to this hosting account and that its DNS points to the account if the provider requires that step.
- Set the installation path. Leave the directory field empty, or use the provider’s root option, for a site at the bare domain. Enter a directory such as
blogfor a site at/blog/. Do not accidentally enterwordpressunless you actually want that word in the public URL. - Enter site and administrator details. Supply the site title, administrator username, a strong password, an administrator email address, and any requested language or update settings. The installer may reject a username that is already reserved or a password that does not meet its policy.
- Review database and advanced options. Some tools create a database automatically. Others ask for a database name, database user, or table prefix. If the tool offers a table-prefix field and this database will contain another WordPress installation, use a unique prefix for this site rather than reusing the other installation’s prefix.
- Run the installation. Start the process and wait for the success message. Do not close the page while the tool is creating files or database tables. Save the displayed login URL and administrator username in a secure password manager.
- Test both addresses. Open the public site URL and the administrator URL shown by the installer. Check that the intended domain and path load, that links use HTTPS when the certificate is active, and that you can sign in. If the domain still shows a hosting placeholder, the installation may be in a different document root or DNS may not yet point to this account.
An installer removes much of the manual work, but it does not make host configuration universal. If a prompt asks for a database host, filesystem path, or permission setting that you cannot identify, use the provider’s account documentation or support channel rather than guessing.

Install WordPress manually
The manual process follows the sequence documented in WordPress’s installation guide. You can use an FTP client, another supported file-transfer method, or shell access if your host provides it. A browser and a text editor are also useful. The tools are optional conveniences; the required pieces are the WordPress files, a compatible web server, a MySQL or MariaDB database, and access to the correct web location.
1. Download and extract the WordPress package
Obtain the current package from WordPress.org and extract it on your computer. Extraction normally creates a directory named wordpress. For a root-domain installation, you will upload the contents inside that directory into the domain’s document root, not the enclosing directory itself. If you upload the enclosing directory to the root, the site can end up at /wordpress/ instead of the bare domain. For a subdirectory installation, create or select the intended directory, such as blog, and upload the package contents there.
2. Create a database and database user
WordPress’s FAQ states: “WordPress requires access to a MySQL or MariaDB database to store information.” Open the database section of the hosting panel and create a database, then create a database user and grant that user privileges for the database. Some hosts combine these actions into one wizard; others require separate screens.
Record the exact values the host displays:
- Database name, including any account prefix automatically added by the host.
- Database username, including any account prefix.
- Database password.
- Database host or server name. It is often, but not universally, a value other than the public domain.
- Port, if the provider specifies a non-default port.
Do not substitute the hosting-panel login for the database user unless the provider explicitly says they are the same. A database can exist while the user lacks permission to read or create tables; grant the user access before starting the WordPress installer.

3. Choose a safe table prefix
Each WordPress installation uses a table prefix in the database. The default prefix is commonly shown as wp_, but the important rule is uniqueness when more than one installation shares a database. Set a distinct prefix for each installation so one site’s tables do not collide with another site’s tables. A unique prefix is not a substitute for database permissions or a complete security plan; it simply prevents naming conflicts between installations.
4. Configure wp-config.php if you want to do so before the browser setup
The manual guide treats this step as optional. You can create or edit wp-config.php and enter the database name, database user, password, database host, and table prefix. If you do not prepare the file, the WordPress installation program can create it when you open the site in a browser. Preparing it yourself is useful when the host supplies unusual database values or when you want to verify every setting before the first request reaches the installer.
Use a plain-text editor, preserve the PHP syntax supplied in the sample configuration, and avoid adding formatting characters from a word processor. Keep the file’s database credentials private. If the host provides a one-click configuration editor, follow its instructions instead of assuming that a local file will be accepted unchanged.
5. Upload the package contents to the chosen web location
Connect with FTP or the host’s file manager and open the document root associated with the selected domain. Upload the files and directories contained in the extracted WordPress package. For a root-domain site, the directory should contain files such as index.php and directories such as wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes directly inside the web root. For a subdirectory site, those same items should be directly inside the chosen subdirectory.

Transfer failures can leave an incomplete installation. Let the client finish, inspect its error log, and compare the remote file count or key directories with the local extraction before proceeding. The WordPress documentation names FTP and FileZilla as examples, but another compatible client or shell transfer can perform the same job.

6. Start the browser installation
Open the URL where you uploaded the files. If the files are in the root, visit the domain; if they are in blog, visit the domain followed by /blog/. WordPress should display an installation screen. If it asks for database details, enter the values supplied by the host exactly, including prefixes and a database host name. If wp-config.php was prepared correctly, WordPress uses it to continue.
The installer then asks for the site title, administrator username, administrator password, and administrator email. Complete the form, submit it, and wait for the confirmation screen. Use the administrator URL supplied by WordPress to sign in and verify that the dashboard opens.
7. Confirm the result at the public URL
Load the public address in a private browser window and check the home page, an administrator login, and at least one internal link. Confirm that the address uses the intended domain and path. If HTTPS is available, use the secure URL and follow the host’s documented process for redirecting HTTP to HTTPS; the precise control-panel setting is provider-specific.

Do I really need MySQL or MariaDB?
Yes. WordPress stores its posts, pages, settings, users, and other site information in a MySQL or MariaDB database. A file upload without a database cannot complete a normal WordPress installation. Your hosting account may provision the database automatically through its installer, but the underlying database requirement remains.
Can several WordPress sites share one database?
They can when the host allows it, but each installation needs a distinct table prefix. The safer operational choice is often a separate database per site when your account limits and provider tools permit that arrangement. Whichever model you use, record which database and prefix belong to each domain so maintenance does not affect the wrong installation.
What if the database host is not “localhost”?
Use the database host value shown by the provider. Hosting architectures differ, and a remote database server may require a hostname, port, or allow-list entry. Guessing localhost can produce a connection error even when the database name, user, and password are correct.

Troubleshoot the first launch
“Error establishing a database connection”
- Recheck the database name exactly as displayed in the hosting panel, including any account prefix.
- Recheck the database username and password; a hosting-panel password is not necessarily the database password.
- Confirm that the user has privileges on that database.
- Use the provider’s stated database host and port rather than assuming a default.
- If the provider recently created the database, allow for any account-level provisioning delay and consult its support documentation.
These checks address the values WordPress needs to connect. If all four values match the panel and the error persists, give the host the exact error and the database name (but not the password) so it can check server-side configuration.
The domain shows a placeholder or the wrong website
Confirm the domain’s document root in the hosting dashboard, then verify that index.php and the WordPress directories are directly inside that location. If they are inside an unintended wordpress folder, move the package contents to the correct level or use the resulting subdirectory URL intentionally. If the files are correctly placed, check that the domain’s DNS points to this hosting account and that the domain is enabled.
The installer gives a permission or file-write error
Check that the upload completed and that the account’s file ownership and permissions match the host’s normal settings. Do not apply broad, unsafe permissions as a first response. Shared hosting providers often use account-specific ownership rules that only their support team can correct. WordPress’s manual guidance recommends contacting the hosting provider when the web-root or server configuration is unknown.
The installer is not available in the panel
Look for another application-installer section or a preinstalled-site workflow. If none exists, follow the manual procedure: database, optional wp-config.php, file upload, and browser installation. The absence of a one-click button does not prevent WordPress from running, provided the account meets the requirements and gives you the necessary file and database access.
How long should installation take?
WordPress.org’s installation FAQ says installation takes “less than five minutes” under most circumstances. That is a general statement from the FAQ, not a guaranteed duration for every account. Domain DNS changes, certificate issuance, file-transfer speed, database provisioning, and host-specific checks can make the real process longer. A preinstalled site or a functioning installer can remove several manual steps; a new domain with incomplete DNS or HTTPS setup may require additional provider work.
What you need, and what you do not
- Needed: a hosting account that meets the current PHP, database, and HTTPS recommendations; a domain or subdomain mapped to the account; and either an installer or access to files and a MySQL/MariaDB database.
- Useful for manual setup: an FTP client or another supported transfer method, a plain-text editor, and a browser. WordPress lists FTP and FileZilla as examples, not mandatory products.
- Not required: a physical product or special hardware. The installation workflow is delivered through the hosting account, software tools, and a web browser.
Once the public URL and administrator login work, keep the database credentials private, note the domain’s document root and database details for future maintenance, and use the host’s support channel for configuration that is unique to the account. The official installation FAQ and manual guide remain useful references when a provider’s interface uses unfamiliar labels.
