It creates the web server, PHP runtime, database, WordPress files and administrator account for you. If you prefer full control, install a manual stack such as MAMP or XAMPP, create a database in phpMyAdmin, set the database values in wp-config.php, and run the browser-based installer.

A local site is private and useful for testing themes, plugins, content and upgrades without changing a live website. It is not a standalone document: WordPress needs a web server, PHP and a MySQL-compatible database running on your computer.

What “installing WordPress locally” actually means
When WordPress runs locally, your computer acts as the server. A local web server receives requests from your browser, PHP executes WordPress code, and MySQL or MariaDB stores posts, settings, users and plugin data. You open the site through a local address such as http://localhost/wordpress or a URL generated by a guided application rather than through a public domain.
A conventional manual installation commonly includes Apache, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, and phpMyAdmin for database administration. Guided applications package equivalent components behind a desktop interface. The result is the same: WordPress core files, a database, and a configuration file that contains the connection details.

Local development is valuable for trying a new theme, checking a plugin, preparing a redesign, learning WordPress or testing an upgrade before touching production. A local copy does not automatically behave exactly like your hosting account, so differences in PHP, database, web-server and caching configuration can still matter when you deploy.
Choose the installation method that fits your work

Before choosing, consider five practical questions: how much automation you want, which operating system you use, whether you need to select PHP or database versions, whether you will import or export an existing site, and how closely the local stack must match production. Guided tools are usually fastest for a new site. MAMP or XAMPP expose each moving part, which is useful when you need to diagnose server behavior or reproduce a hosting environment.

Hardware and operating-system requirements
Local’s current documentation lists 4 GB of RAM and 1.5 GB of disk space as general minimums. Its current supported desktop versions include macOS Monterey 12 or later and Windows 10 or Windows 11. WordPress Studio’s official documentation describes installers for macOS, Windows and Linux.
A site with large media libraries, several plugins or multiple simultaneous sites will need more free disk space than those minimums. Close applications that compete heavily for memory if a local site becomes slow, and keep enough space for database backups and copied site files.
Download WordPress safely
For a manual installation, obtain the WordPress package from wordpress.org/download. Download it before you begin, then unzip it into the document root required by your chosen stack. Do not put the compressed archive itself in the document root and expect Apache to install it.
Decide whether this site is new or a copy
A new local site needs only a fresh database and administrator account. An existing site also needs its files and database imported, plus any URL or environment adjustments required by the tool you choose. Guided applications may provide import and export workflows; verify the exact current process in the application before relying on it.

Guided installation with Local or WordPress Studio
Guided tools remove most of the document-root and database work. The labels vary slightly by release, but the sequence is consistent.
- Download the installer. Choose the package for your operating system from the product’s official site. Install it with the normal desktop installer.
- Launch the application. Allow it to create any local services or networking components it requests. If your operating system asks for administrator approval, confirm only the installer you intentionally downloaded.
- Create a site. Choose the command labelled “Create a new site,” “New site” or equivalent. Enter a site name; the application will use it to form a local URL and storage folder.
- Select the environment. Accept the offered PHP and database environment for a straightforward setup, or choose an advanced/custom option when you need to match a production PHP or database version. Record the versions if you are testing compatibility.
- Set administrator credentials. Enter the WordPress admin username, a strong password and an email address. These credentials are for the local WordPress dashboard and are separate from your computer login.
- Let the tool provision the site. It creates the WordPress files, database and configuration. Wait for the status to show that the site is running before opening it.
- Open the front end and dashboard. Use the application’s “Open site” control for the public-facing view and its admin control, or append
/wp-adminto the displayed local URL. Sign in with the credentials from step 5. - Record the local address. Save the URL, site name and administrator credentials in your development notes. Keep the site bound to your computer while it is under development.
Learn WordPress identifies LocalWP, DevKinsta and VVV as tools that can create a local site and install WordPress automatically. WordPress Studio is another guided option with macOS, Windows and Linux installers; its documented synchronization with WordPress.com and Pressable can be useful when that workflow matches your account and current terms.
Manual installation with MAMP
MAMP’s defaults differ between macOS and Windows. Follow the section for your operating system and do not copy a port value from one platform to the other without checking the MAMP start page.
macOS
- Download and unzip WordPress. Get the package from wordpress.org/download. The extracted folder is normally named
wordpress. - Place the files in MAMP’s document root. Move the contents of the extracted folder into
/Applications/MAMP/htdocs. You can keep thewordpressfolder itself if you want the site to open under a/wordpresspath, or place its contents directly in a different subfolder you control. - Start MAMP. Launch MAMP and start its servers. Open WebStart, then choose the phpMyAdmin link.
- Create the database. In phpMyAdmin, create a database named
wordpress. Use the database-creation screen rather than creating tables manually; WordPress creates its own tables during installation. - Open the site. From MAMP’s start page, choose “My Website.” The first visit should display the WordPress setup wizard.
- Enter the documented defaults. Use database name
wordpress, usernameroot, passwordroot, database hostlocalhost, and table prefixwp_when those are still the values shown by your MAMP installation. - Complete the WordPress wizard. Supply a site title, administrator username, strong password and email address. Submit the form and wait for WordPress to create the tables.
- Sign in. Open the local
/wp-admin/URL shown by the installer and log in with the administrator account you created.
The values above are MAMP’s documented macOS example. If you changed MAMP’s ports, database name or credentials, use those actual values instead; a correct username with the wrong host or port still produces a database-connection failure.
Windows
- Download and unzip WordPress. Extract the package into a temporary folder.
- Move the files. Place the WordPress files in
C:MAMPhtdocs, normally inside awordpresssubfolder if you want the URLhttp://localhost/wordpress. - Start MAMP and open its Start Page. Start the Apache and MySQL services, then launch phpMyAdmin.
- Create the database. Create a database named
wordpressin phpMyAdmin. - Run the installer. Open “My Website” from MAMP’s Start Page and proceed through the WordPress wizard.
- Use the correct database host. MAMP documents username
rootand passwordroot. Its Windows default database host may belocalhost:8889; uselocalhostinstead when MySQL is running on port 3306. - Finish and log in. Enter the site title and administrator details, submit the wizard, then use the resulting local
/wp-admin/address.
The host value must include the port when MySQL is listening on a nonstandard port. If MAMP’s control panel shows a different port, use that displayed value rather than assuming either localhost or localhost:8889.
Manual installation with XAMPP on Windows
XAMPP’s classic workflow gives you direct control over Apache, MySQL and the document root. The WordPress handbook warns that this basic setup is not secure for public exposure, so treat it as a computer-only development environment.

- Install and start XAMPP. Open the XAMPP Control Panel and start Apache and MySQL. Both services must be running before the browser installer can work.
- Check the XAMPP page. Visit
http://localhost/xamppto confirm that Apache is responding, then open the phpMyAdmin link. - Create the database. In phpMyAdmin, create a database named
wordpress. Select theutf8_unicode_cicollation if it is available in the documented workflow. - Copy WordPress into the document root. Unzip the package into
C:xampphtdocs, or the document-root path shown by your XAMPP installation. A folder namedwordpresswill produce the URLhttp://localhost/wordpress. - Create the configuration file. Copy
wp-config-sample.phpto a new file namedwp-config.phpin the WordPress folder. Edit the database constants to match the XAMPP handbook example:DB_NAMEiswordpress,DB_USERisroot,DB_PASSWORDis an empty string, andDB_HOSTislocalhost. - Open the installer. Browse to
http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. If your folder has a different name, substitute that name in the URL. - Finish WordPress setup. Enter the site title, administrator username, strong password and email address. Submit the form and sign in when WordPress reports that installation is complete.
- Keep it private. Do not forward ports, publish the XAMPP document root or otherwise expose this default configuration to the internet. Public hosting requires a substantially stronger security configuration.
Understanding wp-config.php and table prefixes
wp-config.php tells WordPress how to reach its database. In a manual setup, the four values that must agree with phpMyAdmin and the running database service are the database name, username, password and host (including a port when one is required). A mismatch in any one of them prevents WordPress from reading or writing site data.
The $table_prefix value determines the beginning of every WordPress table name. The usual new-site value is wp_. If multiple WordPress installations share one database, give each installation a unique prefix, such as siteone_ and sitetwo_. Without unique prefixes, one installation can collide with or overwrite another installation’s tables.
Keep wp-config.php inside the WordPress directory and do not publish it. It contains database credentials even when the site is only local. Use a strong administrator password as well; local access is still access to your files and database.
Verify the new local site
After installation, check both sides of the site rather than stopping at the welcome screen:
- Open the front-end URL and load a page.
- Open
/wp-admin/, sign in and visit the dashboard. - Create a test post and confirm that it appears on the front end.
- Activate a test theme or plugin one at a time so a failure is easy to identify.
- Note the local URL, document-root folder, database name, database host and the environment’s PHP and database versions.
These notes make a later backup, migration or troubleshooting session much easier. They also let you compare the local environment with the production server before deployment.

“Error establishing a database connection”
First confirm that MySQL or MariaDB is running in MAMP, XAMPP, Local or Studio. Then compare every database value in wp-config.php with the database you created. On MAMP for Windows, check whether the host must be localhost:8889 rather than localhost. On the XAMPP handbook example, the password is empty; entering root as the password there would be wrong.

A blank page or server error
Check that Apache or the application’s web service is running and that PHP is available. A stopped service, a PHP version incompatible with a plugin, or a folder outside the configured document root can all prevent WordPress from rendering. Restart the local services, confirm the site folder path, and temporarily disable the last plugin or theme you changed.
The browser shows a directory listing or a 404
Verify the URL matches the folder name under the document root. For example, files in C:xampphtdocswordpress are normally reached at http://localhost/wordpress. If you moved the files directly into the document root, remove the extra /wordpress segment.
phpMyAdmin will not open
Make sure both the web server and database service are started. A port conflict with another Apache or MySQL installation can prevent MAMP or XAMPP from starting correctly. Stop the competing service or use the port values displayed by the local stack, then update the WordPress database host if the MySQL port changed.
Two local sites interfere with each other
Give each site its own database whenever possible. If they must share one database, set a different $table_prefix in each wp-config.php. Also keep each site in a distinct document-root folder and record its corresponding URL.
Security and production-parity checks
A local site should normally remain reachable only from your computer. The WordPress handbook specifically warns that the basic XAMPP configuration is not secure for public access. Do not treat a default local stack as a public web host simply because another device can reach your computer’s network address.
Before moving work to production, compare the local and live environments. Check PHP versions, the MySQL or MariaDB version, web-server behavior, enabled extensions and caching. A plugin or theme that works locally can still fail after deployment when those variables differ. Test updates locally first, but keep a separate backup of the live site before making production changes.
Guided tools can simplify copying or synchronization, while MAMP and XAMPP make the underlying files and database visible for manual import and export. Whichever route you choose, preserve a copy of the database and WordPress files before replacing an existing site.

Choose Local when speed matters
Use Local when you want a guided desktop workflow that creates the site and database with minimal manual intervention. It is a practical starting point for beginners who meet its documented 4 GB RAM, 1.5 GB disk-space and supported operating-system requirements.

Choose WordPress Studio when you want an official cross-platform tool
Studio is appropriate when you want a free WordPress-branded application with installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. Its WordPress.com and Pressable synchronization can be useful, but check the current workflow and account terms before depending on it.
Choose MAMP when you need explicit control
MAMP is the clearest choice when you want to see the document root, create the database yourself and enter every connection value. It is especially useful for learning how WordPress, Apache, PHP and MySQL fit together, provided you account for the different macOS and Windows host defaults.
Choose XAMPP when you are following a Windows manual
XAMPP provides a familiar Apache, MySQL and PHP stack with a visible control panel and document root. It demands more hands-on setup and requires you to keep the default configuration private.
