You can install Windows on an AVITA Altum from a USB drive, but the boot key and any Altum-specific recovery files or drivers depend on the exact model and are not confirmed here. Before changing firmware settings or deleting partitions, identify your full model number and check its instructions with AVITA. A clean install erases personal files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations, so back up first.
Choose the right kind of reinstall
If Windows still starts, consider an in-place reinstall or Windows recovery option before a clean installation. Microsoft’s installation-media process can support reinstall choices that keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. These choices are less disruptive than wiping the Windows disk, though the available options depend on how you start Setup.

A clean install from USB is appropriate when Windows will not start or you deliberately want a fresh installation. Microsoft Support says a clean installation removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and changes made in Settings. OEM recovery media, when available, may restore hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft installation media does not include. Microsoft’s reinstall guidance explains the distinction and risks.
Back up and prepare
- Copy important files to external storage or cloud storage. Do not rely on files remaining on the Windows disk during a clean install.
- If Windows starts, note the edition shown at Settings > System > About. Install the edition that matches the device’s digital license.
- Confirm that you can access the Microsoft account associated with a digital license, if applicable. If BitLocker is enabled and you use recovery options, you may need the BitLocker recovery key.
- Use another working PC to create Windows installation media. Microsoft says a USB drive of at least 8 GB can be used; use an empty drive because creating the media may erase its contents.
- Write down the Altum’s full model number and, if possible, its region. You will need these details to ask AVITA for the correct boot instructions and any model-specific recovery or driver resources.
Use Microsoft’s current Windows download page to obtain installation media for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Follow the instructions for the Windows version you intend to install and create the media on the working PC, not on the Altum you are reinstalling.

Boot the Altum from the USB drive
- Shut down the Altum, connect the installation USB, and turn the laptop on.
- Open the boot menu or firmware setup using the instructions for your exact Altum model, then select the USB drive. Microsoft lists common manufacturer-dependent keys such as Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12; none is verified as the Altum’s key. Check the model manual or contact your regional AVITA support channel if you do not know which key to use.
- If the USB drive does not appear, consult AVITA before changing Secure Boot settings or switching UEFI/BIOS modes. The correct firmware mode matters: Microsoft Learn warns that starting installation in the wrong mode can make Windows Setup fail. Its UEFI and BIOS mode guidance is general and does not establish Altum-specific settings.
Run Windows Setup without erasing the wrong disk
- Choose the language, time and keyboard preferences, then continue into Windows Setup.
- When prompted, select the Windows edition that matches the Altum’s existing digital license. If Setup offers I don’t have a product key, Microsoft says a key stored in firmware may be applied automatically, and a digital license can reactivate Windows after reinstalling. If you cannot establish that either route applies, stop and confirm the license situation before proceeding.
- At the disk and partition screen, identify the intended Windows disk before making changes. If more than one disk is listed, do not alter disks you do not intend to erase.
- For a clean install, deleting partitions on the intended Windows disk removes their data. Proceed only after confirming the backup and the target disk. Once the correct disk space is unallocated, select it and continue with Setup.
- Let Setup restart the laptop as needed. Follow the prompts to finish installing Windows.
Finish setup, activation, and drivers
Complete Windows’ initial setup and connect to the internet. Check activation in Settings > System > Activation. Microsoft says activation usually occurs after the device goes online when its digital license applies; significant hardware changes can cause activation problems.
Generic Microsoft media may not restore every factory app or hardware-specific driver. The AVITA material available for this article does not establish an Altum-specific recovery image or driver download. If Wi-Fi, the touchpad, display, storage, or another component does not work after installation, contact AVITA through the support route for your region and provide the full model number. Avoid installing drivers intended for a different Altum variant.
