Yes. A Steam Machine is a PC, so you can install Windows or another compatible operating system. Valve has released official Windows drivers for the Steam Machine. The practical choices are to replace SteamOS with Windows, restore SteamOS from Valve recovery media, or experiment with another Linux distribution. Back up first: a clean installation or Valve’s Re-image Device action can erase the internal drive.

Do not assume a supported dual-boot menu. Windows Central reported on 7 July 2026 that Valve still had not provided official SteamOS dual-boot support. Treat dual boot as an experimental, hardware-specific project until Valve’s documentation for your exact Steam Machine revision says otherwise, and keep a SteamOS recovery USB available.

What you can install—and what you may lose

Valve has described Steam Deck and Steam Machine as PCs on which other applications and operating systems can be installed. In practice, the installation process is the same kind of UEFI boot and disk-management work used on a desktop PC, but the consequences are important because SteamOS, installed games, and personal files may share the internal drive.

Windows is the most clearly documented alternative because Valve has released official Steam Machine drivers. A different Linux distribution may boot if its kernel, hardware support, storage layout, and UEFI requirements match the machine, but Valve has not established one universal procedure or support guarantee for every distribution.

Install Windows Official Steam Machine Windows drivers are available from Valve; package names and versions can change by hardware revision. Windows game, launcher, and anti-cheat support depends on each title and its publisher. High if you perform a clean install or delete SteamOS partitions; back up first. Reinstall Windows from Microsoft media, or restore SteamOS with Valve recovery media. Not officially supported as of the 7 July 2026 report; verify Valve’s current documentation.
Restore SteamOS Valve’s recovery image restores stock SteamOS. Returns the machine to its original SteamOS environment after setup and updates. Repair choices may preserve data, but Re-image Device is a full factory reset. Boot the recovery USB and select the appropriate recovery action. Not applicable when restoring the original single-OS setup.
Install another Linux distribution Distribution and kernel dependent; a universal Valve-supported driver matrix is not stated. Compatibility varies by game, graphics stack, launcher, and anti-cheat configuration. High if you repartition or replace SteamOS; use a verified backup. Keep Valve recovery media because community images are not equivalent to Valve support. Not officially established for the exact hardware; treat as experimental.

Prepare safely before changing the operating system

Preparation prevents the most expensive mistakes: losing saves, selecting the wrong disk, or discovering that you have no way back to SteamOS.

Back up everything you cannot replace

  • Copy personal files from the Steam Machine to another computer or external storage.
  • Confirm that cloud-synchronized game saves have completed, then copy any local saves and configuration files separately.
  • Export or record controller mappings, emulator configurations, mods, and other settings you want to reproduce.
  • Assume that a full SteamOS re-image will remove user information, installed games, applications, and other operating systems. A backup that exists only on the Steam Machine is not a backup.

Prepare the installation media

  • Use a dedicated 16GB USB flash drive for the Windows installer or SteamOS recovery image. Imaging overwrites the drive, so move any files on it first.
  • For SteamOS recovery media, Valve recommends using Rufus on Windows to write the current recovery image. Download the image from Valve’s current support documentation rather than relying on an old copy.
  • For Windows, use Microsoft’s current installation-media process and follow the license terms that apply to your edition and region.
  • For another Linux distribution, download the image from that project’s official publisher and check its stated UEFI, storage, and hardware requirements.
  • Verify the target USB drive by capacity, model, and drive letter before starting the imaging tool. Disconnect other removable drives where practical so the wrong device cannot be overwritten.

Keep a wired keyboard connected

Valve’s Steam Machine startup procedure uses the Esc key to enter the BIOS or UEFI interface. A wired USB keyboard is the dependable choice for this stage; wireless keyboards may not be available early enough in the boot process. Keep it connected until the operating-system installer or recovery environment is fully usable.

Record firmware settings

Photograph or write down the existing UEFI settings before changing boot order, Secure Boot, storage mode, or any other firmware option. Change only settings required by the installer, and restore a setting only when you understand what it controls. This record is particularly useful if a failed installation leaves the machine unable to find its normal boot entry.

How to boot a Steam Machine from a USB drive

  1. Shut the Steam Machine down completely. Insert the prepared installer or recovery USB.
  2. Connect the wired USB keyboard and turn the machine on.
  3. Repeatedly press Esc during startup to enter the BIOS/UEFI interface or its boot-selection screen.
  4. Use the keyboard to locate the entry that identifies the USB drive as a UEFI device. Choose that entry rather than an unrelated internal-disk entry.
  5. Save or confirm the one-time boot choice. The installer or SteamOS recovery environment should load from the USB.

If the USB entry is absent, shut down and check that the image-writing operation completed successfully, the drive is inserted directly into the machine, and the keyboard is recognized. Recreate the media only after verifying that you have selected the correct USB device; recreating it erases that drive again.

Install Windows on the Steam Machine

The safest Windows route is a clean installation from Microsoft’s current UEFI-compatible media, followed by Valve’s official Steam Machine drivers. A clean installation can remove SteamOS and anything else on the selected internal disk.

Step 1: Confirm the backup and media

Do not start Windows Setup until your personal files, local saves, and configuration data are stored elsewhere and you have a separate SteamOS recovery USB. Check the USB capacity and label so you can distinguish the Windows installer from the recovery drive.

Step 2: Start Windows Setup

  1. Insert the Windows installation USB and boot through the UEFI USB entry using the Esc procedure above.
  2. Proceed through the language, time, keyboard, and edition screens required by the current Windows installer.
  3. When Setup asks where to install Windows, stop and identify the Steam Machine’s internal disk by its capacity and existing partitions. Do not select the USB installer or another attached drive.

Step 3: Decide whether to replace SteamOS

For a Windows-only machine, delete or format partitions only after checking the disk identity and confirming that your backup is complete. This is the point at which the original SteamOS environment may be removed. If you hoped to keep both systems, stop and reconsider: Valve had not supplied official SteamOS dual-boot support according to the 7 July 2026 report, so a partitioning scheme found online is not a supported Valve configuration.

Step 4: Complete the first Windows boot

Let Windows finish its initial setup and reach the desktop. Connect to a network when possible, but do not treat Windows Update as a substitute for the Steam Machine driver package. Some devices may remain incomplete until Valve’s drivers are installed.

Step 5: Install Valve’s current Steam Machine drivers

  1. Open Valve’s current Steam Machine support page from a trusted device or from the new Windows installation.
  2. Download the driver package listed for your exact Steam Machine hardware revision. Driver names, versions, and installation order can change, so do not rely on an old package list copied into a guide.
  3. Install the package according to Valve’s current instructions and restart whenever Windows requests it.
  4. Open Windows Device Manager and check for devices with warning icons. If one remains, compare its hardware identifier with Valve’s support instructions before trying a generic driver.
  5. Run Windows Update after the Valve package is installed, restart, and test graphics output, audio, networking, USB ports, controllers, sleep or shutdown, and display resolution.

Valve’s driver release confirms Windows support, but the available documentation does not establish one model-independent installation sequence. Follow the live instructions for your hardware revision rather than forcing a package intended for another revision.

Step 6: Reinstall Steam and games

Install the Windows version of Steam and sign in. Restore backed-up saves and configuration files only after checking that they belong to the correct game and Windows path. Games that use different launchers, Linux-native files, or anti-cheat components may require a fresh download or a separate Windows-specific setup.

Restore SteamOS with Valve recovery media

Recovery media is the reliable way back after Windows or another operating system has replaced SteamOS. Valve provides more than one recovery action, so read the description on screen instead of choosing the most destructive option automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Create and boot the recovery USB

  1. Download Valve’s current SteamOS recovery image.
  2. Use Rufus on Windows, as Valve recommends, to write the image to the dedicated USB drive.
  3. Confirm the target drive one more time; imaging overwrites it.
  4. Insert the recovery USB, connect the wired keyboard, power on, press Esc, and choose the USB’s UEFI boot entry.

Step 2: Select a recovery action

The recovery environment presents repair and reset choices. Use a non-destructive repair option only when its on-screen description matches the problem you are trying to fix and you have accepted its limits.

Warning before selecting “Re-image Device”: Valve states that this action performs a full factory reset. It removes user information, installed games, applications, and other operating systems, then replaces them with stock SteamOS. It is not a routine repair and cannot preserve a Windows installation or files stored only on the target installation.

Step 3: Finish the restored SteamOS setup

After the selected recovery action completes, remove the USB when instructed and allow the machine to boot from its internal drive. Complete SteamOS setup, apply available updates, sign in, and redownload games. If you used a repair action, verify which data survived before deleting the recovery media.

Installing another Linux distribution

A Linux distribution may work when its kernel and firmware support the Steam Machine’s processor, graphics, audio, network, storage controller, and input devices. That compatibility is distribution-specific; Valve’s documentation does not establish a universal procedure for every Linux release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an experimental workflow

  1. Read the distribution’s current hardware and UEFI requirements and confirm that its installer supports booting from a UEFI USB device.
  2. Create a full backup and keep a separately prepared SteamOS recovery USB.
  3. Test the distribution’s live environment, if offered, before changing the internal disk. Check display output, networking, audio, controller input, storage visibility, suspend or shutdown, and any game-specific requirements.
  4. If you proceed, identify the internal disk carefully and understand every partitioning choice. A default “erase disk” option can remove SteamOS and personal data.
  5. After installation, apply the distribution’s updates and hardware firmware guidance, then test the machine again.

A community image or forum script is not equivalent to Valve support. Keep notes about the partition layout and firmware changes so that you can undo them or explain them when returning to SteamOS.

What to know about dual-booting Windows and SteamOS

Dual boot means keeping both operating systems on the internal storage and choosing one at startup. It requires enough space for two installations, a bootloader arrangement that survives updates, and reliable recovery if one system changes the UEFI boot entries. Those technical requirements do not make the arrangement officially supported.

Windows Central reported on 7 July 2026 that Valve’s official SteamOS dual-boot support was still missing. Therefore, do not follow a guide that promises a Valve-provided selector unless Valve’s current documentation for your exact hardware revision now says otherwise. If you experiment, make a verified backup, record the original firmware settings, avoid deleting the recovery partition or recovery USB, and expect to troubleshoot boot entries yourself.

Troubleshooting common installation failures

The USB drive does not appear in the boot menu

  • Recreate the installer or recovery media with the correct image and verify that the imaging tool completed.
  • Insert the drive directly into the Steam Machine and disconnect other removable drives.
  • Reboot with the wired keyboard attached and press Esc early enough to reach UEFI.
  • Look specifically for the USB’s UEFI entry. If it still does not appear, test the USB on another computer before changing additional firmware settings.

The keyboard does not work in BIOS or Setup

Use a wired USB keyboard connected before powering on. Try another USB port and remove hubs or wireless receivers. Continue only when you can reliably navigate UEFI; otherwise you risk selecting the wrong disk or being unable to undo a boot-order change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Setup shows several disks or partitions

Stop and identify the internal disk by capacity and partition layout. The USB installer is also a disk, and an external backup drive may be listed beside it. If you cannot distinguish them confidently, cancel Setup and disconnect removable storage rather than guessing.

Windows starts but a device has no driver

Install Valve’s current Steam Machine driver package for the exact hardware revision, restart, and then run Windows Update. Do not assume that a package for another revision is interchangeable. Use Device Manager to identify the missing device and follow Valve’s live support instructions.

The machine always boots the new operating system

If SteamOS was replaced, this is expected. Use the SteamOS recovery USB and the Esc UEFI boot path to restore it. If SteamOS was meant to remain, review the recorded UEFI boot order and boot entries; do not delete partitions until you have a backup and a recovery path.

You need to return to SteamOS after Windows

Boot Valve’s recovery USB and choose the recovery action that matches your goal. If you select Re-image Device, understand immediately beforehand that the full factory reset erases the target installation, including Windows, installed games, applications, and user information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Windows if you need Windows-only software or game compatibility and accept replacing or separately recovering SteamOS.
  • Restore SteamOS if you want the original console-like environment and a supported return path.
  • Try another Linux distribution only if you are comfortable validating hardware support and recovering from a failed boot.
  • Delay dual boot unless Valve’s documentation now confirms support for your exact Steam Machine revision; the status reported on 7 July 2026 was that official support was still absent.
