To install Windows 11 updates, connect your PC to the internet, open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for Windows updates, then choose Download & install when it appears. Restart when Windows requests it. The same page shows current status; Update history lists installed updates and dates. To learn what a particular update changed, identify your Windows version under Start > Settings > System > About, open Microsoft’s update-history page for that version, and select the relevant update or KB entry.
Before you start
Save open work and connect the computer to a reliable internet connection. Microsoft recommends keeping a laptop or tablet plugged into power while updates install so the process is not interrupted by a depleted battery. A desktop should remain connected to stable power as well. Close applications that you do not need, especially before a restart, and make sure you know where unsaved documents are stored.

If the device is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control when updates appear or whether you can install them. In that situation, a missing button or delayed update may be policy-controlled rather than a fault with Windows Update.

The ordinary Windows Update workflow is built into Settings and does not require paid software or special hardware. If storage is the problem, an external USB drive can be useful for temporarily moving personal files, but it is optional.
Install Windows 11 updates from Settings
- Open Windows Update. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Check for updates. Select Check for Windows updates. Windows contacts Microsoft and reports whether updates are available for that device.
- Start the installation. If an update is listed, select Download & install, then follow any on-screen instructions. Some updates download and install in stages, so the page can show more than one item. Read any restart or storage message before continuing.
- Restart if prompted. Windows cannot finish many updates until the PC restarts. Choose the restart option shown by Windows, or use the page’s scheduling controls if you need to avoid an interruption.
- Check the result. After Windows starts again, return to Start > Settings > Windows Update. Review the status message and select Check for Windows updates again if you want to confirm that no additional offer is waiting.
Microsoft’s supported installation procedure is documented in Install Windows Updates. The wording and available controls can vary slightly by Windows 11 release, but the Windows Update page remains the normal manual route.
Reduce interruptions during installation
Windows provides active-hours and restart-scheduling controls. Set active hours to the period when you normally use the PC, or schedule a restart for a convenient time. These controls do not cancel an update; they help Windows choose a less disruptive time to complete it. If Windows says a restart is required, allow enough uninterrupted time for configuration before shutting the lid or disconnecting power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to tell whether Windows 11 is up to date
The Windows Update page is the first place to look. It shows the current update status and any updates Windows is currently offering. A message that you are up to date means Windows has no applicable update ready for that device at that moment; it does not mean every feature mentioned in a release note has already reached the PC.
For a historical record, select Update history on the Windows Update page. Microsoft describes this function as follows: “An update history is available so you can see which updates were installed, and when.” Entries normally identify the update type, KB number or other package name, and installation date. This lets you distinguish an update that is installed from one that is merely described on a web page.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for explanations of update behavior, restart requirements, and common questions. If the page offers no download but Update history shows a recent cumulative package, the absence of a new button may simply mean there is nothing else applicable at that time.
Find your Windows 11 version and build
Version information is essential when you read release notes because the same month can have separate packages for different Windows 11 releases. A KB entry for one version should not be treated as interchangeable with a similarly named entry for another.

- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications and note the value beside Version. You can also record the OS build if the release notes ask for it.
- As an alternative, type

Keep the version, build, KB number, and installation date together when troubleshooting. That small record makes it easier to match an Update history entry with Microsoft’s web page or to report an error accurately.
Do not assume that the newest version number listed on Microsoft’s site is an in-place upgrade for your PC. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended for select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update through Windows Update to existing devices. Check your own version and the offer shown in Settings before treating a version-history page as an available upgrade. Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H1 update history explains that scope.
See exactly what an installed update changed
- Record the installed version. Use the About page or
winveras described above. - Open the matching history page. Use Microsoft’s update-history page for that Windows 11 version, not a page for a different release.
- Select the relevant entry. Match the KB number and date in Update history with the entry on the web page. If several packages have similar dates, use the build number to verify the match.
- Read the release notes. Expand the entry or select its details to see documented changes, fixes, and known issues.
- Check release health. Version-history pages link to Microsoft’s Windows release-health dashboard, which carries the latest known-issue information and mitigation guidance.
For Windows 11 version 25H2, Microsoft states: “Each feature update rolls out in a phased and measured manner.” That means a feature described in notes can be legitimate while still being absent from an otherwise eligible PC. The Windows 11, version 25H2 update history page provides the version-specific entries and links to known-issue information.
Read the notes in order: first the applicability line, then the rollout label, followed by changes, fixes, and known issues. A statement under “gradual rollout” describes availability over time; it is not a guarantee that the feature is enabled immediately after the cumulative package installs. A listed fix, by contrast, is part of the package for the stated version and build after installation and restart.
Feature updates versus quality updates
Release notes make more sense when you know which kind of update you are reading. Microsoft’s FAQ says feature updates are typically released once per year and add capabilities. Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly provide security updates, reliability improvements, and smaller fixes, although a quality update can sometimes include a feature.
| Aspect | Feature update | Quality update |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Adds or enables broader Windows capabilities and may change the operating-system version. | Delivers security fixes, reliability improvements, and other maintenance changes. |
| Typical cadence | Microsoft describes these as typically once per year; the exact timing and availability depend on the release. | Arrives more often, commonly as monthly security or quality servicing, with additional releases possible. |
| Applicability | Limited by Windows version, hardware compatibility, and Microsoft’s staged rollout. | Targeted to supported versions and the device’s servicing state; the exact KB matters. |
| What to inspect | New capabilities, version transition details, rollout status, and known issues. | Security fixes, bug fixes, any listed feature changes, and known issues for that KB. |
Do not compare two entries only by their publication dates. A feature update for one Windows version and a quality update for another are different packages with different eligibility rules. Always match the version, KB, build, and rollout notes.
Quality servicing can also carry a user-visible change. Microsoft’s categories describe the main purpose, not an absolute rule that every monthly package contains only security code. Read the individual KB entry to see whether it includes a feature, a reliability fix, or only security and maintenance work.

Why the latest update is not showing up
Phased availability
Microsoft may release a feature gradually rather than to every eligible device at once. Compatibility signals, hardware, drivers, and servicing conditions can affect the order. Microsoft’s version-history pages describe these staged rollouts, so an update can be officially released without being immediately offered on your PC.

Different Windows version
A page for 25H2 does not prove that the same package applies to 24H2, and vice versa. Confirm the version under Windows specifications, then read the corresponding history page. Version 26H1 is a special case: Microsoft says it is for select new devices and is not delivered as an in-place Windows Update upgrade to existing devices.
Compatibility or safeguard hold
Windows can withhold a feature update while Microsoft investigates a known compatibility problem. Do not force an upgrade solely because a web page lists it. Read the version page and release-health dashboard for known issues before using a manual route. A safeguard hold is intended to prevent a known device or driver problem from becoming an installation failure.
Update has already installed
Check Update history and match the KB number or installation date. A web page may describe a release that is already present under a different display name, or a later cumulative package may include earlier fixes. This is why the KB and build are more useful than the headline date alone.
Rollout timing
Return to Windows Update later and select Check for Windows updates again. Availability can change as Microsoft expands a rollout or clears a compatibility hold. Checking repeatedly does not override a safeguard, but it confirms when your device becomes eligible.
What to do when an update will not install
Start with Microsoft’s troubleshooter
Use the official troubleshooting route linked from Microsoft’s installation guidance. Follow the checks Windows presents, then restart and try Windows Update again. Record any error code before closing a message; the code helps distinguish storage, compatibility, servicing, or restart problems. Keep the exact KB and build with the code so that a support technician can identify the package involved.
Free disk space when storage is insufficient
If Windows reports that there is not enough space, Microsoft suggests removing unneeded files, uninstalling apps you no longer use, or moving personal files to another drive. An external USB drive is one optional destination for moved files; it is not required for ordinary updates.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Delete files you no longer need, while checking the Recycle Bin and large downloads.
- Uninstall unused applications through Windows Settings.
- Move large personal files to another internal or external drive, then retry Windows Update.
- Return to Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for Windows updates, and start the download again if it is offered.
Do not remove system folders or personal files that you still need merely to make room. The goal is to create usable space safely; an external drive is a convenience for moving files, not a special Windows Update requirement.
Restart and retry
A pending restart can block the next package. Restart from the Windows Update page or the Start menu, let Windows complete its configuration, and then check for updates again. Keep a portable computer connected to power during this process. If Windows returns to the desktop without completing the package, note the status and any code before trying another step.
When a newer feature version is not offered
Microsoft notes that the Windows Update Assistant can provide a manual route for some newer feature versions. Use it only when Microsoft’s current instructions say it applies to your device and version. Verify eligibility and known issues first; a missing offer may be an intentional compatibility safeguard rather than a problem to bypass. The Assistant is not a reason to ignore a hold affecting a particular driver or hardware configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read a Microsoft release-note entry
A release page normally separates rollout information, changes, fixes, and known issues. Read the heading and applicability line first, then confirm the OS versions and builds. Next, check whether a change is in gradual rollout or normal rollout, because those labels indicate whether availability is still expanding.
Microsoft’s July 28, 2026 preview release, KB5101684, applies to Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 and lists OS builds 26200.8973 and 26100.8973. Its entry documents examples such as File Explorer size-display changes and Windows Search improvements, alongside fixes and other information. The page also records an August 14, 2026 change saying eligible updates are installed with the monthly security update whenever possible, while expedited or critical updates may remain separate. This is an example of how to interpret release notes, not a blanket instruction to install that preview.
Read the entry that matches your installed version and KB. A feature mentioned under gradual rollout may not be visible yet, while a fix listed as included should be reflected after the package is installed and the PC has restarted. Preview releases are useful for understanding Microsoft’s documentation format, but use the offer shown in Windows Update and the current release-health guidance when deciding what to install.
