VSCodium uses the Open VSX Registry as its preset extension gallery, so an extension missing from the Extensions view is not necessarily unavailable. First search Open VSX. If the publisher offers an authorized VSIX file, download it from the publisher’s repository or release channel and install it with Extensions: Install from VSIX or codium --install-extension /path/to/extension.vsix. Installation alone does not prove that an extension is compatible with VSCodium or permitted by its license.
What “Marketplace unavailable” means in VSCodium
VSCodium is a community-built distribution of the VS Code editor. Its default extension gallery is Open VSX rather than Microsoft’s Visual Studio Marketplace. As the VSCodium project documentation puts it: “As noted above, the Open VSX Registry is the pre-set extension gallery in VSCodium.”

That distinction explains why an extension can appear in the Visual Studio Marketplace yet be absent from VSCodium’s search results. Open VSX does not automatically contain every Marketplace listing. The absence of a result is therefore a distribution issue first, not an installation failure.

Open VSX and Marketplace: the practical difference

The important decision is not simply whether a file can be installed. Check the source and publisher authorization, the extension’s support for your editor version and operating system, any product or license restriction, and how you will receive future updates.

Search VSCodium’s built-in Open VSX gallery
Use the Extensions view first
- Start VSCodium.
- Open the Extensions view from the activity bar, or open the Command Palette and run the extensions-related command that opens it.
- Search using the exact extension name, its publisher name, or both. Publisher-qualified searches reduce the chance of selecting an imitation with a similar title.
- Open the result and read its description, supported version range, platform notes, publisher identity, and license information.
- Select Install and wait for the extension to finish downloading and installing.
If the extension appears in Open VSX, this is the simplest and most maintainable route. VSCodium can manage an extension installed from its configured gallery in the normal way, subject to the extension’s own release and compatibility policies.
When a search returns no result
Confirm the spelling and try the publisher name. If there is still no listing, do not assume that manually downloading a file from an arbitrary website is safe. Move to the extension’s own repository, documentation, or release page and look for a VSIX distributed by the publisher or explicitly identified by the publisher as an approved download.
Search results can also differ when you are using a profile, a workspace, or an older VSCodium build. Those conditions do not create a missing listing, but they can make an installed extension appear disabled or unavailable after installation. Record the VSCodium version and active profile while diagnosing the problem.
Find an authorized VSIX for a missing extension
A VSIX is the installable package format used by VS Code-compatible editors. The format is only a container; it does not guarantee that the extension will run in VSCodium or that you have permission to use the package.
Preferred sources
- The publisher’s release page: Use a release asset supplied by the project that maintains the extension.
- The publisher’s source repository: Check its release notes or documentation for a VSIX download and supported editors.
- Open VSX publication: If the project has not published there, ask the maintainer to do so. VSCodium also documents a request route through the VSCodium project.
Prefer a publisher-controlled release over a mirror or a file reposted by an unknown third party. Keep the release version, download location, and checksum information, if provided, with your records so you can identify what was installed later.
Checks to make before downloading
- Verify that the package is intended for VSCodium or for the open-source VS Code codebase on which it is based.
- Check the minimum and maximum editor versions stated by the publisher.
- Check whether the extension supports your operating system and CPU architecture.
- Read the extension license and any product-specific restrictions.
- Review release notes for known limitations, required companion extensions, or a required backend service.
If the publisher offers only a Marketplace download and does not authorize redistribution, do not treat a copied VSIX as an approved alternative.
What to record for reproducibility
Save the exact filename, version, publisher, source URL, and download date. If the publisher supplies a checksum or signed release, retain that information too. These notes make it possible to identify the package later, remove it from a machine, or return to a known-working version after an update.
Install a VSIX in VSCodium
Graphical installation
- Download the authorized
.vsixfile to a location you can identify. - Open VSCodium’s Extensions view.
- Open the Extensions view command menu, usually represented by a three-dot menu.
- Choose Install from VSIX….
- Browse to the downloaded file and select it.
- Accept the installation prompt. If VSCodium asks to reload, choose Reload so the extension can activate.
- Return to the Extensions view and confirm that the installed version and publisher match the package you selected.
You can also open the Command Palette and run Extensions: Install from VSIX…. This reaches the same file picker without requiring you to find the Extensions view menu.

Command-line installation
Open a terminal and run:
codium --install-extension /path/to/extension.vsixReplace the example path with the actual file. On systems where the VSCodium executable is not on your PATH, invoke the full path to the executable instead. A successful command installs the package into the VSCodium profile associated with that executable.
For a path containing spaces, quote it according to your shell. For example:
codium --install-extension "/path with spaces/extension.vsix"After installation, launch or reload VSCodium and check the Extensions view. The extension should show its installed version and provide enable, disable, or uninstall controls.

Installation success is not compatibility success
VSCodium can accept a VSIX file even when the extension cannot operate correctly in VSCodium. A package may install but fail during activation, hide features, or refuse to run after detecting the editor identity.

Proprietary Microsoft extensions are a special case
VSCodium’s documentation identifies Microsoft’s C# debugger and the Windows debugger supplied by its C++ extension as examples of restrictively licensed components intended for the official Visual Studio Code build. Some Remote Development extensions may have similar requirements, and an extension can be hard-coded to reject VSCodium.
Do not present manual VSIX installation as a universal workaround for these restrictions. If the publisher states that an extension is limited to the official build, use the supported editor or choose an alternative that explicitly supports VSCodium.

VSCodium summarizes Microsoft’s position that Marketplace offerings are intended for Visual Studio products and services. Its documentation also notes restrictions on installing those offerings in other products and on redistributing Marketplace VSIX files.

That means two separate questions must be answered:
- Can VSCodium read and install the file? The VSIX mechanism may accept it.
- Are you authorized to obtain and use it in VSCodium? The publisher’s license and distribution terms decide this.
Do not bypass Marketplace controls, use an unofficial mirror, or redistribute a downloaded package merely because the editor accepts it. If the extension is not available in Open VSX, ask the maintainer to publish it there or use a release that the maintainer explicitly authorizes for your editor.
Configure another gallery only for a legitimate service
Advanced users and organizations can configure VSCodium to use a different extension gallery. This is appropriate when you operate a private gallery or have documented endpoints supplied by an administrator or gallery provider. It is not a generic instruction to redirect VSCodium to Microsoft’s Marketplace.
Environment-variable configuration
VSCodium documents these required gallery settings:
VSCODE_GALLERY_SERVICE_URLVSCODE_GALLERY_ITEM_URLVSCODE_GALLERY_EXTENSION_URL_TEMPLATE
Set them only to endpoints provided by the gallery operator. A missing or incorrect endpoint can leave searches empty, produce download errors, or return packages that do not match the editor’s expectations.
Product configuration
VSCodium also documents configuring a custom product.json in the user configuration directory. The JSON configuration requires service, item, and extension URL fields corresponding to the settings above. Use the platform-specific location and syntax described by the current VSCodium documentation, and keep a backup before editing the file.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting a gallery can make approved extensions available to a team or an individual developer, but it requires a functioning gallery service, correctly generated metadata, reachable endpoints, and an update process. If you do not control such a service, installing a publisher-authorized VSIX is usually safer and simpler.

VS Code documentation states that automatic updates are disabled by default for extensions installed from a VSIX. Treat the installed file as a fixed version until you check the publisher’s release channel yourself.

- Record the installed extension version in the Extensions view.
- Periodically check the publisher’s release page or repository for a newer authorized VSIX.
- Read the release notes and compatibility requirements before upgrading.
- Install the newer VSIX using the same graphical or command-line procedure.
- Reload VSCodium and verify that the extension still activates and that its settings remain present.
If a new release breaks your workflow, reinstall the previously working package if you retained it and report the issue to the publisher with your VSCodium version, operating system, extension version, and activation error.

The extension is installed but does not activate
- Reload VSCodium.
- Confirm that the extension is enabled for the current workspace and profile.
- Compare your VSCodium version with the extension’s declared engine range.
- Open the extension’s output or error panel and look for a product, platform, runtime, or dependency failure.
- Check the publisher’s issue tracker for a known VSCodium limitation.
The package is rejected during installation
- Confirm that the file is a complete VSIX and was not renamed from another archive type.
- Download it again from the publisher’s authorized release location.
- Check whether your VSCodium build is old enough that the package requires a newer extension API.
- Use the publisher’s documented installation method if the release includes special instructions.
Commands from the extension are missing
Missing commands often indicate that activation never completed or that the feature is gated behind a companion runtime. Review the extension’s requirements and activation errors before reinstalling repeatedly.
The extension works in VS Code but not VSCodium
Check for an explicit official-build requirement. Product checks, proprietary services, and restricted debugger components cannot be reliably solved by downloading a different copy of the same VSIX. Choose an extension whose publisher documents VSCodium support, or use the official build when the license requires it.

Security checklist for downloaded extensions
- Use the publisher’s repository or release page whenever possible.
- Confirm the publisher identity, package name, version, and release date.
- Read the license before installation, especially when the package originated from a proprietary marketplace.
- Inspect requested capabilities and workspace access before enabling the extension on sensitive projects.
- Keep a record of the file and source so you can reproduce or remove the installation.
- Do not generalize the trust protections described for extensions installed through Microsoft’s own product to packages obtained elsewhere. A separately downloaded VSIX requires your own assessment of the publisher and source.
Frequently asked questions
Can I point VSCodium directly at Microsoft’s Marketplace?
Do not treat that as a standard workaround. VSCodium documents gallery configuration for a service with valid service, item, and extension URL endpoints, such as a private or self-hosted gallery. Microsoft’s Marketplace terms restrict its offerings and redistribution, so use only a gallery you are authorized to access and a package the publisher permits for VSCodium.
Why is an extension in VS Code but not in VSCodium?
VSCodium searches Open VSX by default, while the official editor uses Microsoft’s Marketplace. The maintainer may not have published the extension to Open VSX, or may distribute it only through an authorized VSIX release.
Is every VSIX compatible with VSCodium?

VSCodium identifies the C# debugger and the Windows debugger supplied by its C++ extension as restrictively licensed for the official Visual Studio Code build. Some Remote Development extensions may have similar restrictions. Use the supported editor or an alternative that explicitly supports VSCodium rather than trying to bypass the product check.
What should I do if there is no VSIX download?
Ask the maintainer to publish the extension to Open VSX, or use the publication request route documented by VSCodium. Do not rely on an unknown mirror or a copied Marketplace package.
Does installing a VSIX require administrator access?
