How to Install Visual Studio Professional and Set Up Your First Project

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Visual Studio Professional from Microsoft’s official download flow, let the Visual Studio Installer add the workload that matches your target language or platform, and then create a project from the Create a new project screen. You need a Windows account with administrator permissions for installation, enough free storage for the selected features, and a Professional license or subscription appropriate to your use.

The safest first setup is deliberately selective: install the web, desktop, mobile, C++, or other workload you actually need rather than every available feature. Templates are supplied by workloads, and you can add another workload later through the installer without reinstalling the IDE.

Decide which Visual Studio version and edition you need

Microsoft’s current installation documentation covers the supported Visual Studio releases and links to both the Visual Studio 2022 release history and the current release history. Start at Microsoft’s Visual Studio installation guide, then choose the release and edition that fit your compatibility, organization, and licensing requirements.

Why Professional is a separate choice

Select Professional when that is the edition your organization, subscription, or project requires. Microsoft’s C++ setup guidance describes Community as intended for individual development, classroom learning, academic research, and open-source work, and directs other scenarios toward Professional or Enterprise; that is general edition guidance, not a determination of your personal license eligibility. Check the current terms for your situation before installing.

Use the account attached to your subscription

If your access comes through a Visual Studio subscription, sign in with the account to which the subscription is assigned. Eligibility, purchase routes, and benefits vary by subscription category, so use Microsoft’s current Visual Studio IDE subscription information or your organization’s procurement guidance rather than assuming every account can activate Professional.

What computer do you need for Visual Studio Professional?

The figures below come from Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 system-requirements page. They are version-specific vendor requirements, not a universal specification for every later release. Before installing a newer release, check its own requirements page.

Item Visual Studio 2022 guidance How to use the figure
Memory 4 GB RAM minimum Enough for the minimum supported installation, but not a comfortable target for substantial solutions.
Recommended memory 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions A sensible target when you expect several projects, browsers, emulators, or other development tools to be open.
Storage 850 MB to 210 GB, depending on selected features; typical installations use 20–50 GB The range is driven by workloads and components. Keep additional free space for source code, caches, updates, and build output.
Display 1366×768 minimum; 1920×1080 or higher works best Higher resolution gives the editor, tool windows, and designers more usable space.
Drive Microsoft recommends an SSD An SSD generally makes project indexing, builds, and IDE startup more responsive than a hard disk.

See the complete, Visual Studio 2022-specific list, including supported operating systems, at Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2022 system requirements. Do not carry the 2022 storage or memory numbers forward as guaranteed requirements for a 2026 release without checking the current documentation.

Prepare Windows before downloading

A few minutes of preparation prevents most failed or incomplete installations.

  • Use an administrator account. The installer needs administrator permissions to add Visual Studio and its components.
  • Apply Windows updates. Restart if Windows reports a pending installation or restart; an unfinished update can interfere with setup.
  • Free disk space. Base your estimate on the workloads you intend to select, not only the small bootstrapper download. Leave room for temporary files and later updates.
  • Confirm the target release. If a team requires a particular Visual Studio version, record that requirement before downloading. Microsoft documents release-history and side-by-side installation options.
  • Close work that may need a restart. Setup can install prerequisites and may ask to restart Windows.

How do I install Visual Studio Professional?

1. Download the official Professional bootstrapper

Open Microsoft’s Visual Studio installation page and choose the Professional edition and release you need. Download only from Microsoft’s route; a third-party repackaged installer can be outdated or altered. If you need an older supported release, follow the release-history links on that page rather than guessing at a download address.

2. Start the bootstrapper with administrator permission

Open the downloaded bootstrapper. Windows may display a User Account Control prompt; approve it only if the file came from Microsoft’s official download flow. The bootstrapper launches Visual Studio Installer. The installer asks you to acknowledge Microsoft’s License Terms and Privacy Statement before continuing.

3. Choose installation locations carefully

During the initial installation, Visual Studio lets you choose locations that affect the IDE and download cache. Check the destination drives before selecting Install. Microsoft notes that changing these drives later can require uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio, so choose a location with enough capacity and avoid a nearly full system drive.

4. Select the workload for your first application

Visual Studio Installer presents workloads as feature sets. Read each summary and select the set that corresponds to what you plan to build. Workload selections control the templates that will be available when you create a project.

If your first goal is… Start by examining… Why
An ASP.NET or other web application ASP.NET and web development It supplies the web-development tools and templates associated with that workload.
A Windows desktop application in C++ The C++ desktop workload offered by the installer C++ desktop templates and toolchains are tied to the C++ workload rather than the web workload.
A cross-platform C# or C++ application The relevant desktop/mobile or cross-platform workload The required SDKs and templates differ from a web-only installation.
Another language or platform The workload whose description names that language or platform Choosing by target avoids downloading unrelated toolchains while ensuring the matching templates appear.

The names and contents can change between Visual Studio releases. Treat the table as a starting point, then read the summaries in your installer. Microsoft’s workload and component reference for Professional is available at the Professional workload and component IDs page.

5. Refine the component selection when necessary

Each workload has required, recommended, and optional components. Required components are installed by default; recommended and optional components can be selected when your project needs them. Use the Individual components view when a specific SDK, compiler, debugging tool, or integration is absent from the workload’s default selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select every workload merely to make every template visible. A maximal installation consumes substantially more storage and makes future maintenance less focused. If you later discover that a project needs another SDK, you can modify the installation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

6. Install and wait for setup to finish

Review the selected workloads, components, and locations, then choose Install. Keep the computer powered and connected as the installer downloads packages. Depending on the selections and connection speed, setup can take considerably longer than downloading the initial bootstrapper. Follow any restart request, then launch Visual Studio from the Start menu.

Which Visual Studio workload do you need?

A workload is a coordinated bundle of tools, SDKs, templates, and supporting components. The correct choice is determined by the application type and language, not by the fact that you chose Professional. For example, a web developer and a C++ desktop developer can install different workloads in the same edition.

Use the template you intend to create as the test

Before installing, write down a plain-language target such as “an ASP.NET web app,” “a C++ Windows desktop program,” or “a cross-platform C# app.” In the installer, select the workload whose description matches that target. After installation, the New Project dialog is the practical check: search for the project type you named. If it is missing, the corresponding workload or component is not installed yet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a workload is not enough

Some projects need a component that is not part of a workload’s default selection. Open Individual components, search for the named SDK or tool, and select it alongside the workload. Keep a record of unusual selections if you are setting up several workstations so that teammates receive a consistent toolchain.

How do I create my first project in Visual Studio?

After Visual Studio opens, the common first-project sequence is:

  1. On the start window, choose Create a new project.
  2. Use the search box to enter the application or project type you want. For example, search for a web application or a C++ desktop project rather than browsing every template.
  3. Use the filters for language, platform, and project type to narrow the results. The available templates depend on the workloads installed.
  4. Select the template that matches your target and choose Next if the template presents a configuration page.
  5. Provide the project information requested by that template, including its name and location, then choose Create.
  6. Wait for Visual Studio to create and load the solution. The editor and project files should now be available for coding.

Microsoft demonstrates this flow in its C and C++ installation guide. That page uses C++ examples, so its workload and template names are not mandatory for a web, C#, or other project. The navigation pattern—Create a new project, search, filter, select a template, and create—is the common starting point across workloads.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Choose a template by outcome, not by the shortest name

Templates with similar names can target different platforms or application models. Read the description and check the language and platform labels before creating one. If the expected language filter or template family is absent, return to the workload selection rather than creating an unrelated project and trying to retrofit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the first project easy to find

Use a location that is included in your normal backup or source-control plan and avoid placing source files inside temporary download directories. A short, descriptive project name makes it easier to identify the solution when you reopen Visual Studio. The exact configuration fields vary by template, so follow the fields shown by the selected template instead of assuming every project has the same options.

How to add workloads or components after installation

You do not have to predict every future requirement on day one. Microsoft states: “At any time after installation, you can install workloads or components that you didn’t install initially.” To modify Visual Studio, use either method:

  1. In Visual Studio, open Tools > Get Tools and Features.
  2. Alternatively, open Visual Studio Installer from the Windows Start menu.
  3. Find your Professional installation and choose Modify.
  4. Select the additional workload or individual component, review the resulting storage change, and apply the modification.

This is also the fix when a project template is missing because its workload was not selected initially.

Troubleshoot the problems that stop a first setup

The installer will not start or Windows blocks it

  • Confirm that the bootstrapper came from Microsoft’s official download route.
  • Right-click it and choose the administrator option if your Windows account permits elevation.
  • If User Account Control requests credentials you do not have, ask your administrator to perform the installation.
  • Install pending Windows updates and restart before trying again.

The installation fails for lack of space

Reopen the workload selection and remove features you do not need. Check both the selected installation location and the drive used for the download cache; a large workload can fill a different drive than the one you expected. Remember that Microsoft’s 850 MB–210 GB range for Visual Studio 2022 depends on selected features, and typical installations are listed as 20–50 GB. Free additional space for updates and project files rather than targeting the bare minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The template you need is missing

Templates are workload-dependent. Open Tools > Get Tools and Features or Visual Studio Installer, choose Modify, and add the workload associated with the language or platform. If the template still does not appear, inspect Individual components for the SDK or tool named in the template description, then restart Visual Studio and search again.

Visual Studio feels slow

Check whether the machine is close to the minimum memory or storage figures. Microsoft recommends 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions and an SSD for better performance. Closing unrelated applications and keeping sufficient free SSD space can help, but a workload-heavy solution may still need more memory than the 4 GB minimum.

You installed the wrong release

Use Microsoft’s release-history links to identify the required version. Teams sometimes need an older release for a framework or extension, while other projects require the current release. Visual Studio supports documented side-by-side installation scenarios; verify compatibility and disk capacity before adding another version.

Activation or subscription access is unclear

Installation and licensing are separate questions. Sign in with the account assigned the subscription, and ask your organization or consult Microsoft’s subscription documentation if the edition is not available. Do not assume that a personal Microsoft account, a school account, and an organization-managed subscription have the same Professional rights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage, versions, and maintenance decisions

Plan the drive layout before the first install

The initial installer choices determine where the IDE and download cache live. Microsoft warns that changing those locations later can require uninstalling and reinstalling. If your system drive is small, decide at the beginning which supported drive will hold the installation and cache, and leave room for updates and multiple projects.

Use side-by-side versions only for a reason

Keeping a required older release beside a current release can help when a team or framework has a documented compatibility constraint. It also increases storage use and gives you more than one installation to update. Record which version each solution expects, and select that version deliberately when opening the project.

Review workloads as your role changes

A learner may begin with one language and later add web, desktop, mobile, or native-code tools. Modify the existing installation instead of downloading a second copy of the IDE solely to obtain another workload. Remove unused components only after confirming that no active solution depends on them.

First-project checklist

  • Release and Professional edition confirmed.
  • Administrator permission available.
  • Windows updated and restarted if required.
  • Enough free space for selected workloads, cache, updates, and source code.
  • Workload matches the first application’s language and platform.
  • Optional components selected only when a project requires them.
  • Visual Studio opens and the expected template appears under Create a new project.
  • Subscription account identified if Professional access comes from a subscription.

What to verify when Microsoft updates Visual Studio

Microsoft’s installation documentation now discusses newer releases and configuration migration, while the hardware figures cited above are specifically for Visual Studio 2022. Before a fresh installation in 2026 or later, recheck the current release’s system requirements, supported Windows versions, workload names, and installer labels. The workflow remains recognizable, but exact screens, component versions, and requirements can change.
