Umami’s official Docker Compose setup starts the analytics app and a PostgreSQL database together. With Docker Compose available, run docker compose up -d, open http://localhost:3000, and sign in with the documented initial credentials. Change the password immediately after logging in.
What the Compose setup includes
The official Umami installation guide supplies a Compose configuration containing both the application and PostgreSQL. This is the simplest path when you want to run both services yourself rather than connect Umami to a separately managed database. The guide’s launch command is docker compose up -d; it starts the services in the background and makes the app available at http://localhost:3000 on the machine running the stack. See Umami’s installation guide.
You need Docker Compose installed and available on the target machine. The official installation excerpt assumes that prerequisite and does not provide operating-system-specific installation steps.

localhost refers to the computer making the request. For a server deployment, reaching Umami from outside the server requires an externally reachable route, such as a suitably configured reverse proxy. The Compose quick start documents the local address, but does not provide a proxy recipe; proxy, domain, and network configuration depend on your deployment.

Use an external PostgreSQL database instead
If you choose Umami’s prebuilt PostgreSQL image, docker.umami.is/umami-software/umami:postgresql-latest, you must provide the database rather than relying on the database bundled in the Compose quick start. Configure DATABASE_URL with the connection string for that database. Umami identifies it as the only required environment variable, and recommends a unique APP_SECRET for each installation to secure authentication tokens. Generate a random value with openssl rand -hex 32. Details are in the environment-variable reference.
Connection strings and migration requirements vary by PostgreSQL service. If DATABASE_URL uses a pooled connection, Prisma migrations may need a separate direct connection. In that case, set DIRECT_DATABASE_URL to the direct PostgreSQL URL; Umami documents it for migration commands when the pooled URL should not be used for migrations. Its Supabase guide shows pooled and direct URLs together. The Neon guide recommends adding ?pgbouncer=true&connect_timeout=10 to its pooled connection string. Do not apply one provider’s connection syntax to another provider without checking that provider’s current guidance.
Bundled versus managed PostgreSQL
| Setup | Where PostgreSQL runs | Operational responsibility to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Official Compose quick start | Alongside Umami in the supplied Compose setup. | You operate the deployment and must plan for persistent storage, backups, upgrades, and availability. |
| External managed PostgreSQL | Outside the Umami app container, using a service such as Neon or Supabase. | Check the provider’s storage, backup, availability, networking, and pooled-versus-direct connection arrangements; these differ by service. |
| Managed container hosting | The app runs on a hosting service, with its database arrangement determined by that deployment. | Umami documents examples for Northflank and bunny.net; consult each guide for its specific setup. |
The official guides demonstrate deployment patterns, not a universal cost, performance, or reliability ranking. Choose based on which service you want to operate and how its database connects to Umami.

For Compose users, Umami’s update instructions use docker compose down followed by docker compose up -d to recreate the container with the latest image. Check the current update guide before upgrading, particularly if you are moving between major versions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For major upgrades such as moving to v3, schema migrations can leave PostgreSQL’s query planner with stale statistics, which may slow dashboard queries on large instances. Umami recommends running ANALYZE; in that situation. This is a major-upgrade consideration, not a routine command for every restart or minor update.
What v3 means for older installations
Umami v3 removes MySQL support and standardizes on PostgreSQL. The documented MySQL-to-PostgreSQL migration path requires the MySQL schema to be synchronized with v2.19.0 before following that process. If you are upgrading an older MySQL-backed installation, consult the migration guide rather than treating the new Compose setup as a database migration.
