Esseker can still be installed only when you have a compatible copy of its map mod and a mission package that matches your DayZ server build. The map is legacy software: its development was abandoned, the existing mission files are reported as outdated, and the Steam Workshop listing is currently marked removed for violating Steam Community & Content Guidelines. Do not assume that an old download will work on a current server.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted DayZ servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A working deployment has three separate parts: the @Esseker mod folder, an Esseker offline mission in mpmissions, and the signing key in keys. The startup parameter must load the mod, while the mission template in the server configuration must point to the correct mission directory.

What you need before installing
Stop the server before changing files. Make a complete backup of the server configuration, existing mpmissions content, the keys directory, and any database or persistence files your host exposes. A backup gives you a rollback point if the legacy mission fails after a restart.
You also need a source for both the map files and a mission package. The historical Steam Workshop item was 2462896799, but the listing is currently removed. A mission downloaded from an old guide may not contain the fixes required by the DayZ server version you are running. Treat a package as usable only after it starts a clean test server and allows a client with the matching files to join.

Esseker.bikey, or the key supplied with your mission package.- Access to
serverDZ.cfgor the provider’s configuration editor. - A client that can obtain exactly the same Esseker Workshop content/version.
Do not combine a mission from one package with an unrelated map build unless the package documentation explicitly says they are compatible. The mod, mission and key are related deployment items, but they are not interchangeable files.
Understand the three Esseker deployment items
| Item | Where it goes | What it does | Typical failure when missing |
|---|---|---|---|
@Esseker folder |
Server root, or the host’s mod directory | Contains the map’s packed game data and identifies the mod loaded at startup | The server cannot load the map mod, or clients report a missing map |
| Esseker mission folder | mpmissions |
Defines the offline world, spawn settings and mission configuration used by the server | The server stops during startup or loads a different/default mission |
Esseker.bikey (or the package’s key) |
Server keys folder |
Allows the server to accept signed files from the mod | Signature or key errors prevent startup or client connections |
The mission directory name and the template value are a pair. If the folder is named dayzOffline.esseker, the template must use that exact spelling. Some hosted panels use dayzOffline.Esseker instead; follow the name supplied by that panel’s map package.

1. Stop the server and preserve a rollback
- Use the server control panel or service manager to stop DayZ completely.
- Copy the current
serverDZ.cfg, startup script,mpmissionsdirectory andkeysdirectory to a dated backup location. - Record the server’s current DayZ version and existing startup mod list. This makes it possible to identify whether an update or another mod caused a later failure.
2. Place the map mod
Upload the complete @Esseker folder to the server root, alongside the normal DayZ server directories, unless your host specifies a separate mod directory. The project README’s requirement is an up-to-date @Esseker folder in the server root. Preserve the folder name and internal structure; do not upload only a subfolder such as Addons.
3. Install the signing key
Copy Esseker.bikey into the server’s keys folder. If the mission package includes a differently named key, use that supplied key instead of inventing a filename. Check that the file is in the server’s active keys directory, not inside @Esseker or a local client folder.
4. Upload the mission
Copy the complete Esseker mission directory into mpmissions. Depending on the package and host naming convention, it is commonly called dayzOffline.esseker or dayzOffline.Esseker. Keep the mission’s subfolders and configuration files intact. Do not rename the directory after setting the template unless you update the template at the same time.
5. Point the server at the mission
Open serverDZ.cfg and set the template value inside the DayZ mission class. A historical configuration uses:
class Missions
{
class DayZ
{
template="dayzOffline.esseker";
};
};
The value must match the directory under mpmissions. If your package uses the capitalized directory, change the value to dayzOffline.Esseker. Save the file without changing unrelated server settings.
6. Add Esseker to the startup mod list
Add @Esseker; to the server’s startup mod parameter. In a command-line or script-based installation this is commonly represented as:
Rank #3
- 🎮 Collector's Item: Allows for CO/VS functionality for co-op action (cable included). CO/VS multiplayer technology allows two Pocket Players to be linked together for cooperative gameplay using the included CO/VS cable
- 🎁 Konami Licensed Collectible: Includes arcade version of Contra and Super Contra
- High Resolution: This pocket-sized game features a high-resolution 2.8-inch full-color vertical display.
- Powered by either 4 AA batteries or by any micro USB cable (not included)
- 🎵 Built-in front facing speaker, volume control, and 3.5 mm headphone jack.
-mod=@Esseker;
Keep the semicolon separator when other mods are present, but do not add other mods during the first test. A managed panel may have a map-pack installer that writes this parameter for you; verify the resulting startup command rather than adding a second, duplicate entry.
7. Start a clean test
- Start the server with Esseker as the only added mod.
- Watch the server console or log until it completes initialization and reaches the lobby.
- Connect from a client that has the same Esseker Workshop content/version.
- Confirm that the client reaches the world, can move around the map and can reconnect after a normal restart.
- Only after this succeeds, add other mods one at a time and test after each change.
Installing Esseker through a hosted control panel
Some DayZ hosts provide a map-pack installer and a configuration editor instead of requiring every command-line change manually. The labels differ, but the deployment still consists of the same mod, mission and key.
- Stop the server and create a backup from the panel if that option is available.
- Run the panel’s Esseker or map-pack installer. Let it download or register the map mod and startup entry.
- Upload the updated mission files to the panel’s
mpmissionsdirectory using its file manager or SFTP. - Open the panel’s
Config.cfgeditor and select or enterdayzOffline.Essekeras the mission template, using the exact spelling of the uploaded folder. - Save the configuration, restart the server and test with a matching client before enabling additional mods.
GTXGaming’s hosted workflow specifically calls for installing the map pack, uploading updated mission files, selecting dayzOffline.Esseker in Config.cfg, saving and restarting. A panel installer can manage the startup parameter, but it cannot make an incompatible mission file compatible with a newer DayZ build.
How to verify that the installation is complete
Use this checklist before diagnosing more complicated errors:
Rank #4
- Award winning innovative design that bridges the gap between roleplaying and boardgaming in space by integrating ship to ship and boarding action.
- You and your friends play characters as the crew of a ship laid out in modular format. Your ship is on a hex map. The enemy controls whatever challenges you face. Your continuing characters rise in power as you face tougher and more exciting challenges.
- Age 12+ / 1-6 players / 60-240 minutes playing time
- Second edition, advanced rule book sold seperately
- The server root contains a complete
@Essekerfolder. - The active
keysdirectory containsEsseker.bikeyor the key supplied with the mission package. - The mission directory is directly under
mpmissions, not nested one level too deep. - The
templatestring exactly matches that mission directory name. - The startup mod parameter contains
@Esseker;, unless the hosting panel has inserted it automatically. - The server reaches the lobby with no other newly added mods.
- The joining client has the same Esseker content/version as the server.
Troubleshooting startup and connection failures
The server does not start
First compare the mission template and directory character by character. A folder named dayzOffline.esseker will not be found if the configuration points to a different name. Then confirm that @Esseker exists in the location used by the startup command and that the key is in the active keys folder. A missing folder, misplaced key or malformed configuration entry is more likely than a map-world problem at this stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf those checks pass, remove every other non-default mod and start again. Esseker’s compatibility warning applies to other mods as well as to the map itself, so a clean launch isolates the map from unrelated dependencies. Restore additional mods individually only after the clean launch succeeds.
The server reaches the lobby but the map is missing
Check that the mission actually loaded the Esseker template rather than a default DayZ mission. The directory under mpmissions and the configured template must refer to the same package. Also verify that the server startup command loaded @Esseker; a mission folder by itself does not install the map’s game data.
A client receives a missing-mod or version mismatch error
The client must have the same Esseker Workshop content/version as the server. A server-side mission upload does not distribute the map to players. Have the client update or reacquire the matching Workshop files, then reconnect. Mixing files from different releases can leave the server and client with different signatures or world definitions.

Key or signature errors appear
Confirm that the key supplied by the mission package is copied to the server’s active keys folder and that it was not left inside the mod directory. If the package uses a key name other than Esseker.bikey, use the supplied filename. Restart after correcting the location so the server reloads its key set.

The installation worked until a DayZ update
Do not assume the update is a transient server problem. Existing Esseker mission files may no longer match the current DayZ build, and GTXGaming explicitly warns that old mission files can become incompatible. Recheck the package for an updated or repaired mission, compare its requirements with the server version, and test it on a clean instance before touching a live server. If no compatible mission package is available, the practical options are to keep the server on a supported build where the package worked or choose a maintained map.
Another mod breaks the server
Stop the server, remove all added mods except @Esseker, and verify that the map works alone. Add the other mods back one at a time, restarting and testing after each addition. The first mod that reproduces the failure is the one to investigate for a dependency, load-order requirement or incompatibility. Do not treat a successful map-only launch as proof that every combination will work.
What the legacy status means for server owners
Esseker is not a regularly maintained map. The Workshop listing’s removal and the reports that its mission files are outdated mean that installation instructions preserved from older guides are historical, not a guarantee for a current DayZ release. The exact folder names and configuration syntax can still be useful when you possess a compatible package, but they cannot replace a mission file built for your server version.
Before committing to a public server, decide whether you can obtain a maintained mission package, test it after DayZ updates and support clients who need the matching map files. If any of those conditions is uncertain, test privately first and keep a rollback of the last known-good server build.
Interpreting the old Workshop numbers
The captured Workshop listing recorded 84,420 unique visitors, 153,341 current subscribers and 1,488 favorites. These are Workshop counters from the listing, not measurements of active Esseker servers or current player numbers. They should not be used to estimate present-day community activity.
Quick Recap
Final deployment checklist
- Back up the server and stop it.
- Obtain a compatible
@Essekerfolder and mission package. - Copy
@Essekerto the server root or host mod directory. - Copy the supplied
.bikeyfile tokeys. - Place the Esseker mission directly under
mpmissions. - Set
templateto the exact mission folder name. - Add
@Esseker;to the startup mod parameter unless the panel manages it. - Start with no other added mods and verify a client can join.
- Add other mods individually and retest after every change.
- After a DayZ update, revalidate the mission package before reopening the server.
