How to Install the Asylum Mod on a 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server

Install Asylum on the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server application (Steam app 294420), not in the ordinary game folder. Match the game branch and Asylum release on the server and every client, place the extracted mod folder directly in the server root’s Mods/ directory, and start a new world. Before launch, confirm the release’s current EAC requirement; the available Asylum guidance is community-authored and may conflict with the official cross-play defaults.

What you need before installing Asylum

Asylum is an overhaul rather than a small cosmetic modlet. Its changes to biome generation, points of interest, zombie spawn tables and progression affect the world and the assumptions made by connecting clients. Treat the installation as a coordinated server-and-client deployment.

  • A dedicated-server installation: install Steam’s separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server tool, application ID 294420. The game client alone does not provide the same server files or startup process.
  • A matching game build: the server branch and every player’s game branch must be the one required by the Asylum release. A newer or older build can fail before the mod loads.
  • The same Asylum package everywhere: download the current release from the mod publisher’s official distribution channel. The exact official download URL and supported build were not exposed in the available material, so check the publisher’s release notes or community announcement immediately before installing.
  • Administrative access: you need permission to stop the server, copy its save and configuration files, create the Mods/ directory, and edit firewall or hosting settings.
  • A fresh-world plan: do not assume a vanilla save, or a save from another overhaul, can be migrated safely.
  • Resource headroom: community planning figures suggest 12 GB of RAM for four players, 16 GB for eight and 20 GB for 16. These are estimates, not official Asylum requirements; leave additional memory for the operating system and other services.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting

Either approach can run the mod, but the practical work is different. A self-hosted machine gives you complete control of Steam branches, files and launch options. Managed hosting reduces operating-system and network administration, but the provider must expose the controls Asylum needs.

Deployment concern Self-hosted server Managed host
Steam/game branch You can select and pin the required branch directly in Steam or the server tool. Confirm that the host lets you select the required game branch and does not auto-update past it.
CPU and RAM You choose hardware and can add headroom for world generation and extra players. Check the plan’s actually allocated RAM and CPU, not only its player-count label.
Ports and firewall You configure the operating-system firewall, router NAT and public address. The provider supplies a port allocation; verify that the game ports and query ports can be opened.
Backups Schedule and test your own copies of saves and configuration. Use automated backups only after confirming their retention, restore process and whether they include the world.
Restart scheduling Use your own service manager or scheduled task. Look for timed restarts and a clean-stop option so saves are not interrupted.
Mod upload Copy the archive and extract it over a local or remote file connection. Confirm that the panel provides file-manager or FTP/SFTP access and does not hide the server root.
Support for a fresh world You can create, rename or remove worlds yourself after taking a backup. Ask whether the panel permits a new world and preserves the old save for rollback.

For either option, verify branch selection, persistent storage, file access and backup restoration before inviting players. A host that cannot pin the required build or upload a complete mod folder is not suitable for this overhaul.

Install and pin the dedicated server

  1. In Steam, install the separate 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server tool (application ID 294420). Do not place the mod in the ordinary client installation and expect the dedicated process to find it.
  2. Open the tool’s properties and select the game branch specified by the current Asylum release notes. Do this before copying any mod files. If the release notes name a particular stable, experimental or legacy branch, use that exact label.
  3. Allow the tool to finish updating, then record the server build. Have each player select the same branch in the game client’s properties and let Steam finish its update.
  4. Start the unmodded server once, let it create its normal folders, then stop it cleanly. This establishes the server root and gives you a known baseline for backups.

Server and client versions must match. A successful Steam download is not proof that the build is correct for Asylum; the mod’s release notes take precedence over an automatic update.

Back up the save and configuration

Stop the server before touching files. Copy the complete world-save directory and the server configuration to storage outside the live server folder. Include any generated world data, administrative lists, scheduled-task files and custom launch scripts you rely on. Label the backup with the date, game branch and whether it is vanilla or modded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not overwrite the backup when experimenting. If you later need to return to vanilla, the cleanest recovery is to stop the server, restore the pre-Asylum save and configuration, and start the matching unmodded build.

Put the Asylum files in the correct folder

  1. Obtain the release archive from the publisher’s current official channel. Read its included instructions for the supported game build and any required companion files.
  2. With the server stopped, create a directory named Mods at the dedicated-server root if it does not already exist.
  3. Extract the archive. The mod’s top-level folder must sit directly inside Mods/. The resulting layout should be conceptually server-root/Mods/Asylum/<mod files>, with the actual folder name taken from the release.
  4. Check for an accidental extra extraction layer. A layout such as Mods/Asylum/Asylum/<mod files> commonly prevents discovery because the mod folder is one level too deep.
  5. Do not copy only selected DLLs, assets or subfolders unless the release instructions explicitly say to do so. Preserve the package’s internal structure and case-sensitive names.

General 7 Days to Die server guidance places each modlet folder in the server root’s Mods/ directory. The same placement is the safe starting point for Asylum; a hosting panel may display the root under a different path, so use the directory that contains the server executable and configuration.

Start once and inspect the log

  1. Start the server without allowing players to connect yet.
  2. Watch the live console or log file for the normal mod-loading stage and an Asylum initialization message. Treat this as an operational check, not as proof that every feature is compatible.
  3. If the process exits, reports a missing assembly or shows no reference to the mod, stop it and recheck the folder depth, archive extraction and game branch.
  4. Stop the server cleanly after the first test. Make a new backup before generating the production world.

Keep the first startup log. It gives you a comparison point when adding updates or diagnosing a client-only asset error.

Install the identical release on every player computer

Every connecting player needs the same Asylum release and the same underlying game build as the server. The Asylum-specific installation guidance reports asset-bundle failures when versions differ. A player who has a different archive, an incomplete extraction or a different branch can be rejected even when the server itself starts normally.

  1. Give players the exact release identifier and required game branch, rather than a generic download instruction.
  2. Have each player install the mod using the release’s client instructions and verify that the folder and files are complete.
  3. Ask everyone to launch the game once on the matching branch before joining. Steam must finish any pending update first.
  4. Test with one client, then add the rest. If the first client works but another receives an asset-bundle error, compare release archives and game build numbers before changing server settings.

Create a new world instead of reusing the old one

Generate a new world for Asylum. The overhaul changes biome generation, points-of-interest placement, zombie spawn tables and progression. Those systems are written into world data and progression state; loading an existing vanilla or differently modded save can leave missing locations, incorrect spawns or an unusable progression path.

  1. Keep the original save outside the active save directory or rename it clearly; do not delete it.
  2. Use the server’s normal world-generation controls to create a new world after Asylum has loaded successfully.
  3. Choose the seed and map options required by the release notes. Record them with the backup so the world can be reproduced.
  4. Join with one correctly matched client and check that terrain, points of interest, progression and early enemy spawns appear as expected.

If you must preserve the old world for another group, run it as a separate instance with its own save and configuration. Do not switch the same save repeatedly between vanilla and Asylum.

Decide how to handle EAC and cross-play

EAC is the one setting that cannot be answered safely with a universal yes or no. A community Asylum installation guide says EAC must be disabled, but that statement is not corroborated by an identified official Asylum release page. Check the current release notes or the publisher’s announcement for the exact version you installed before launch.

The official 7 Days to Die Help Center’s general cross-platform example lists these values:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Cross-play example How to interpret it for Asylum
ServerMaxPlayerCount Maximum 8 Cross-play guidance caps this example at eight players; it does not establish an Asylum capacity.
ServerAllowCrossplay True Use only if the mod release and all target platforms support cross-play.
EACEnabled True This is the official general example, not confirmation that Asylum accepts EAC.
IgnoreEOSSanctions False Retain the official safety default unless the platform or release documentation says otherwise.

If the current Asylum instructions require EAC off, set EACEnabled=False only after confirming that requirement and tell players how it affects their launcher or server browser. Disabling EAC may also prevent cross-play or alter how the server is listed. If cross-platform play is essential, resolve that conflict with the release maintainer before opening the server; do not infer compatibility from the vanilla Help Center example.

Open the network ports

A current hosting guide lists TCP port 26900 and UDP ports 26900–26903 as common dedicated-server ports. These are not a guarantee for every 7 Days to Die build or host. Use the port values shown in your server configuration and hosting provider’s documentation, then apply matching firewall and router/NAT rules.

Traffic Common value What to verify
TCP 26900 Allow inbound traffic to the server process and forward the same port from the router to the host.
UDP 26900–26903 Forward and allow the complete range if your configuration or host uses it; do not open ports that are not assigned.

Test from a network outside the server’s LAN. A local connection can succeed even when NAT, a cloud security group or an operating-system firewall blocks public players.

Plan RAM and player count

The Asylum-specific figures available for planning are community estimates: 12 GB minimum for four players, 16 GB for eight and 20 GB for 16. They are not official requirements or a performance guarantee. World generation, view distance, other server processes and the operating system consume part of the total.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Concurrent players Community planning estimate Practical use
4 12 GB RAM A starting point for a lightly loaded server; monitor memory during generation and busy events.
8 16 GB RAM Provides more room for eight players, but CPU speed and storage still affect stutter.
16 20 GB RAM A planning estimate only; test before promising this population on a particular machine.

If the process is killed or the operating system begins swapping, reduce the player target or add memory before changing mod files. Keep the world and logs on fast, reliable storage and leave free disk space for saves and backups.

Troubleshoot the common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
The server starts but no Asylum load appears in the log. The archive is still compressed, the Mods/ folder is in the wrong root, or the mod is nested one directory too deep. Stop the server, locate the directory containing the server executable, and place the release’s top-level folder directly under Mods/.
A player receives an asset-bundle or version error. The client and server have different Asylum releases or game branches. Compare exact release identifiers, reinstall the same archive and let Steam complete the same branch update on every machine.
An old world has missing POIs, strange biomes or broken progression. The save was generated for vanilla or another overhaul. Restore the backup, keep the old world separate and generate a fresh Asylum world.
Players are kicked immediately with an EAC-related message. EAC status does not match the release’s requirement, or cross-play settings conflict with the mod. Check the current Asylum release notes, then align EACEnabled and cross-play settings on the server and client.
Local players connect but remote players cannot. Firewall, NAT, cloud security-group or provider port settings are blocking traffic. Confirm the configured ports, forward them to the correct host, allow the server process and test from an external network.
The process stops during generation or under load. Insufficient RAM, CPU headroom or disk space. Check logs and operating-system metrics, reduce the planned population, close unrelated services or move to a larger machine.
One platform cannot see the server in the browser. Cross-play is disabled, unsupported by the release, or incompatible with the EAC choice. Verify the mod’s platform support first; then compare ServerAllowCrossplay, EAC and listing settings with the official guidance.

Updating, rolling back and removing Asylum

Back up the current Asylum world before every update. Record the old release, game branch, configuration and seed. Read the new release notes for migration instructions; because Asylum changes world systems, assume that a major update may require another fresh world unless the maintainer explicitly supports migration.

  1. Stop the server and copy the live save, configuration and current mod folder.
  2. Confirm the new release’s supported game build and EAC instructions.
  3. Replace the old mod folder as a complete unit rather than mixing files from two releases.
  4. Start the server, inspect the log, and test with one matching client before inviting the full group.
  5. For rollback, stop the server, restore the previous mod folder and matching game branch, then restore the corresponding save backup.

To remove Asylum, stop the server, preserve the Asylum save as an archive, remove only its mod folder, restore a compatible vanilla or previous-mod configuration, and load a save created for that configuration. Never expect an Asylum-generated world to become a safe vanilla world merely because the folder was deleted.

Final pre-launch checklist

  • Dedicated Server app 294420 is installed separately from the game client.
  • The server branch, client branch and Asylum-supported build match exactly.
  • The archive came from the current official distribution channel and was extracted completely.
  • The top-level Asylum folder is directly inside the server root’s Mods/ directory.
  • The original save and configuration are backed up outside the live directory.
  • A new world has been generated for Asylum.
  • EAC and cross-play choices were checked against the release-specific guidance, not assumed from vanilla settings.
  • Firewall, NAT and host ports match the server configuration.
  • RAM and CPU capacity have been checked against the intended player count, with headroom.
  • At least one client has joined successfully before the server is announced to the whole group.
