Install the TestNG Eclipse plug-in through Eclipse Marketplace or the official update site, then restart Eclipse and confirm the TestNG view appears. If your project uses Maven or Gradle, add TestNG to that project’s build separately: the IDE plug-in does not replace the framework dependency.
Check the requirements first
The TestNG Eclipse plug-in documentation specifies Eclipse 4.2 or later. It says plug-in versions 7.8.0 and later require Java 11 or later, while versions through 7.4.0 require Java 8. It does not state the Java requirement for every version between those ranges, so check the exact release requirements before installing one of those versions. See the official TestNG Eclipse plug-in download page.
These are stated minimums, not a complete compatibility matrix for every Eclipse release, operating system, and plug-in version.
Choose an installation method
| Method | Where you start | What you need to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Eclipse Marketplace | The TestNG listing in Marketplace | No repository URL; follow the Marketplace installation prompts. |
| Official update site | Eclipse’s Help menu | The repository URL: https://testng.org/testng-eclipse-update-site. |
Both methods install the Eclipse plug-in. Neither adds the TestNG dependency to your project’s build. The official Marketplace and update-site procedures are described on the TestNG download page.

- This is of rare rarity.
- You will receive the 1st Edition version of this card.
Install from Eclipse Marketplace
- Open the TestNG listing in Eclipse Marketplace.
- Use the listing’s Install control. The official instructions also describe dragging the Marketplace Install icon onto the Eclipse workspace.
- Follow the prompts in Eclipse to complete installation.
- Restart Eclipse when prompted or after the wizard finishes.
Install from the official update site
- In Eclipse, choose Help → Install New Software….
- In Work with, enter
https://testng.org/testng-eclipse-update-site. - Make sure the checkbox beside the repository URL is selected, then choose Next.
- Continue through the installation wizard, accepting the prompts needed to finish.
- Restart Eclipse after installation.
The official update-site listing also provides version-specific repository URLs. Use the main release site for an ordinary installation; choose a versioned site only when you intentionally need that release. The listing reviewed here included versions through 7.11.0, but the available versions can change. Check the current update-site listing before selecting a specific version.
Verify that Eclipse recognizes TestNG
- After restarting Eclipse, choose Window → Show View → Other….
- Expand the Java category.
- Look for and open the TestNG view.
The plug-in also adds a TestNG entry under File → New → TestNG for creating a TestNG class. Its IDE workflows can launch tests from classes, methods, groups, or suite XML files. See the TestNG Eclipse plug-in documentation.
Add TestNG to the project separately
The plug-in integrates TestNG into Eclipse; your Java project still needs the TestNG framework dependency in its build configuration. For a Maven- or Gradle-managed project, follow the dependency instructions on TestNG’s official download page and select a version compatible with your project. Do not assume installing the Eclipse plug-in has changed the project’s pom.xml or Gradle build file.
If you use Maven in Eclipse, the plug-in documentation describes an optional M2E integration plug-in and recommends it for Maven projects. It is an optional integration, not a universal prerequisite for TestNG. The framework’s test-running concepts are covered in the TestNG documentation.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
Eclipse cannot reach or read the update site
Check whether your proxy or corporate firewall permits access to the official repository. TestNG’s troubleshooting page identifies https://testng.org/testng-p2-update-site as its P2 update site and discusses an offline update-site option when Eclipse cannot reach the online site. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes for every network or installation failure. See TestNG’s troubleshooting guidance.
The plug-in installs but its view is missing on Windows
Check that the Eclipse installation folder grants your user full rights, as recommended by the TestNG troubleshooting page. Then restart Eclipse and check Window → Show View → Other… → Java again.

An old tutorial’s repository URL fails
Use the currently documented main release URL, https://testng.org/testng-eclipse-update-site, rather than a repository URL copied from an older tutorial. If you deliberately need a particular plug-in release, select its versioned repository from the official update-site listing.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot while working through a web-based setup guide, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL request captures the TestNG plug-in page; replace the URL with the page you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://testng.org/testng-eclipse/ -o shot.webp
