You can play Super Mario Galaxy on a 64-bit Android phone with Dolphin, but a safe setup has two non-negotiable parts: install the emulator only from Dolphin’s official download page, and use a game dump made from a copy you legitimately own through a method permitted in your country. Nintendo identifies downloading or uploading pirate copies as illegal, and Dolphin states that it is independent of Nintendo. This guide covers the complete setup, pointer and motion controls, controller choices, performance tuning, and fixes for the problems that most often stop Galaxy from working correctly.
What you need before installing
Super Mario Galaxy was designed for a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Emulation therefore involves more than opening a game file: Dolphin must reproduce buttons, an analog stick, a pointer and motion actions. Check these prerequisites first.

- A 64-bit Android device: Dolphin’s Android builds target 64-bit phones and tablets. Android version, chipset, graphics driver and thermal limits differ widely, so no universal frame-rate or compatibility guarantee is possible.
- Current Android updates: Install the latest system and security updates offered for your device. Updated graphics and sensor drivers can matter as much as raw processor speed.
- Free storage: Reserve room for Dolphin, your legally created game dump, save data and any shader or cache files. Keep the original dump unchanged so you can verify or recopy it if a file becomes corrupted.
- A legal game dump: Obtain the game data from a disc you own using a lawful dumping method in your jurisdiction. Do not use a download site, peer-to-peer link, “preloaded” package or a modified APK that bundles a ROM.
- An input plan: Touch controls can work, but a Bluetooth gamepad for Android usually gives more reliable buttons and analog movement. Motion and pointer behavior depend on your phone and controller.
Dolphin is an emulator, not a Nintendo product. Dolphin’s own FAQ says, “Dolphin is not affiliated with Nintendo in any way.” Treat the emulator and the game data as separate things: install the former from its official source and supply the latter yourself.

Install Dolphin from the official Android build
Choose a stable release first
Dolphin’s official download page lists Android builds and separates stable releases from development builds. A development build may contain newer fixes, but it has had less testing. For a first installation, select the current stable Android release. If a documented bug affects your phone, you can later test a development build without deleting your game files or profiles.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Install the APK safely
- Open Dolphin’s official download page in your phone’s browser and select the Android build. Avoid APK mirror sites, “mod” releases and packages advertising included games.
- Download the APK, open it from Android’s download notification or file manager, and confirm the installer’s publisher and filename before proceeding.
- If Android asks to allow installation from that source, enable the permission only long enough to install the official APK, then turn it off again in your security settings.
- Launch Dolphin. Grant only the storage or file access that Android requests for the directory where your own game dump is stored. Do not grant unrelated permissions.
If an APK asks for contacts, SMS, accessibility control or other access unrelated to reading game files, cancel the installation and obtain Dolphin again from its official page.
Prepare and add your own Super Mario Galaxy dump
Use a dedicated game directory
Create a folder you can identify easily, such as Games/Wii in internal storage or on an Android-approved removable drive. Keep game files out of the Android/data and Android/obb folders unless your Android version and file manager explicitly support access there; those protected locations can make troubleshooting harder.
Copy your own dump into the folder without renaming it unnecessarily. Dolphin can read supported Wii disc-image formats, including formats offered by different Dolphin versions; the exact accepted extensions depend on the installed build. If you have a choice, keep the original dump archived separately and use a working copy for experiments.
Select the directory in Dolphin
- Open Dolphin and go to the games list.
- Choose the option to add, browse for or select a game directory. Android’s wording varies by version, but the control opens the system file picker.
- Navigate to the folder containing your dump, select that folder rather than an individual file when prompted, and approve access.
- Return to Dolphin’s game list and wait for its scan to finish. Super Mario Galaxy should appear with its title art or file name.
If the game does not appear, check the folder selection, Android’s file permission, the dump’s extension and whether the file completed copying. Do not “fix” a missing entry by downloading another ROM. A failed or incomplete dump should be recaptured from your own disc or checked against the dumping procedure you used.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Keep your legal source and backups separate
Do not overwrite the original dump while testing compressed formats, file moves or graphics settings. A second copy on reliable storage gives you a recovery path if a transfer is interrupted. Save files and controller profiles can be backed up separately, but they do not replace the game data itself.
Understand Galaxy’s control requirements
Galaxy uses the Wii Remote pointer for more than menu navigation. The game manual describes pointing at Star Bits to collect them, pressing B to shoot, pointing at an enemy and pressing A to stop it, and pointing at Mario and pressing A to make him jump. Co-Star mode also relies on pointing plus A and B actions. Movement additionally uses the Nunchuk stick, while several actions require a shake or another motion input.
That combination means a controller mapping with only buttons and a left stick is incomplete. You need four functional layers:
Recommended Free Tools
- Buttons: A, B, plus, minus, Home and the directional buttons as needed by the game and menus.
- Nunchuk movement: The Nunchuk analog stick mapped to a left stick or touch stick.
- Pointer: A controllable on-screen cursor for Star Bits, enemies, menus and Co-Star actions.
- Motion: Shake, tilt or other Wii Remote/Nunchuk motion events, depending on the action and Dolphin’s mapping.
Set up an emulated Wii Remote in Dolphin
Open Wii input settings
- In Dolphin, open the main menu and choose the Wii input or controller settings page.
- For the first Wii Remote slot, select an Emulated Wii Remote rather than an unconfigured real-Wii-Remote option.
- Open the button and motion mapping screen. Dolphin’s labels and layout can change between Android releases, but the controls are grouped around Wii Remote, extension, pointer and motion sources.
Map the essential buttons first
- Map A to a large, easy-to-reach button. Galaxy uses A for jumping and for several pointer-related interactions.
- Map B to a shoulder or trigger button that you can press without losing control of the stick. B shoots Star Bits and performs other actions.
- Map the Wii Remote directional buttons, plus, minus and Home if you need full menu navigation. You can leave rarely used buttons unmapped temporarily, but a complete profile avoids returning to settings later.
- If you are using a touchscreen, resize or reposition the buttons so your thumb does not cover the pointer area. Save the layout before starting the game.
Map the Nunchuk stick
In the extension section, choose the Nunchuk and map its analog stick to your left analog stick or a virtual touch stick. Test all directions in Dolphin’s input display. Mario should move at a controllable walk rather than jumping between full-left and full-right values. If the stick is too sensitive, reduce its radius or adjust the dead zone gradually; an excessive dead zone makes small movements unresponsive.

- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
Configure the pointer
Dolphin’s pointer can use a touchscreen region, a right analog stick, a mouse-like input or another available source. Choose one that you can control while pressing A and B.
- Touch region: Drag on the designated screen area to move the cursor. This is portable but can obscure the game and compete with virtual buttons.
- Right stick: A Bluetooth gamepad’s right stick offers a steadier cursor than swiping on glass. Set a moderate sensitivity and dead zone, then test the full screen edge to edge.
- Alternate motion source: Some setups derive pointer movement from phone sensors or controller motion. This can feel closer to a Wii Remote but requires calibration and varies by hardware.
Point at a menu item, a Star Bit and Mario in a test session. If the cursor reaches only part of the screen, increase its range or recalibrate. If it moves when your hands are still, lower sensitivity, recenter the source or choose a different mapping.
Add motion and save a profile
On supported Android builds, the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope can provide Wii Remote-style motion input. Enable the Android sensor source in Dolphin’s motion settings and assign it to the shake or tilt actions required by your profile. Use gentle movements: a phone is less robust than a Wii Remote, and vigorous shaking increases the chance of dropping it.

Choosing touch, a Bluetooth gamepad or a real Wii Remote
There is no device-independent winner. Dolphin’s input capabilities are documented, but published sources do not establish a universal performance ranking across Android phones. Choose based on how precisely you need to aim, how much setup you tolerate and whether you are comfortable moving the phone.
| Setup | Pointer precision | Motion fidelity | Setup complexity | Portability | Battery needs | Phone-drop risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen controls | Acceptable after careful sizing; fingers can cover the screen | Phone sensors can provide motion on supported builds | Lowest hardware cost, but extensive on-screen mapping may be needed | Highest; no accessory required | Uses the phone battery | Low while stationary, higher if you shake the handset |
| Bluetooth gamepad for Android | Right-stick aiming is generally steadier than a small touch region | Depends on whether the controller and mapping provide suitable motion input | Pairing plus Dolphin profile setup | Good, but requires carrying and charging the pad | Phone and controller batteries | Low because both hands stay on the controller |
| Real Wii Remote and Nunchuk | Purpose-built pointing hardware can feel natural when correctly synchronized | Closest to the original control arrangement, subject to adapter and Android support | Highest; pairing, sensor configuration and two physical devices may be required | Lowest | Phone, controller and possibly accessory batteries | Low for the phone, but wrist straps are still sensible |
For most Android players, a Bluetooth gamepad for Android is the clearest physical-accessory option because it supplies real buttons and a stick without requiring you to wave the phone. A gamepad does not automatically reproduce every Wii motion feature, so verify its available sensors and map any missing action to a button only if that substitution remains playable.

Using phone sensors
- Place the phone in a secure case and hold it with both hands before testing motion.
- Enable accelerometer and gyroscope input in Dolphin’s Android motion source, if those controls are available in your build.
- Recenter or calibrate while the phone is held in the position you will use during play.
- Perform small shakes and tilts first. Increase sensitivity only when an action fails to register.
Sensor axes and behavior vary by phone model, Android version and Dolphin build. If a shake registers as a tilt, or the pointer rotates unexpectedly, change the source axis or use a controller mapping instead of assuming the game is defective.
Using a physical controller
Pair the controller in Android’s Bluetooth settings before opening Dolphin, then select it as the input device in the emulated Wii Remote profile. Map the right stick to pointer movement and verify that the stick returns to center. If your controller includes motion sensors, map them explicitly; Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee that Dolphin receives motion data.

Performance settings that are safe to try
Performance depends on the phone’s processor, graphics driver, Android version, Dolphin build, thermal state and the game’s current scene. Do not treat a frame-rate number from another device as a promise for yours.
- Start with the stable Dolphin release and the default graphics backend recommended by your device.
- Close background games, video apps and downloads before launching Galaxy. Background activity can reduce available memory and cause thermal throttling.
- If rendering is slow or uneven, lower Dolphin’s internal resolution one step at a time. A lower resolution reduces GPU work but makes the image less sharp.
- Test a different graphics backend only when the default produces a documented problem. A backend change can fix glitches on one driver and create them on another.
- Change one setting at a time, play the same area briefly and note whether controls and graphics remain stable. Restore the previous value if a new option causes crashes or visual corruption.
Do not download unofficial “performance” builds or replacement game files to solve stutter. Emulator updates and device drivers are safer variables to test.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Dolphin does not list the game
- Open Dolphin’s game-directory picker and confirm that the selected location is the folder containing the dump.
- Recheck Android’s file permission for that folder. If access was revoked, select the directory again through the system picker.
- Confirm that the file finished copying and uses a format supported by your installed Dolphin build.
- Try the untouched backup copy if the working file may be incomplete or corrupted.
Do not obtain a replacement ROM from a third-party site. Nintendo Support states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.”

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The pointer drifts or will not reach targets
- Open Wii input settings and identify the active pointer source.
- Recenter or recalibrate the phone sensor, right stick or touch region.
- Reduce sensitivity and set a small dead zone for a stick that does not rest exactly at center.
- Check that no second input source is also mapped to the pointer.
- Save the corrected game-specific profile and restart the game.
Motion actions do not register
- Verify that Android sensor input is enabled and that Dolphin’s motion source is assigned to the emulated Wii Remote.
- Recalibrate while holding the phone naturally, then test a gentle shake rather than a large movement.
- Check whether your controller actually supplies motion data to Android; many Bluetooth pads provide sticks and buttons only.
- Use a physical controller with a suitable motion or button mapping when the phone’s sensors are unavailable or uncomfortable.
Buttons work but Mario does not move
Inspect the Nunchuk extension mapping and confirm that its analog stick is assigned to the left stick, not the pointer or a Wii Remote directional input. Test each axis in Dolphin’s input display and reduce the dead zone if small movements are ignored.
Galaxy runs poorly or crashes
- Return to a stable Dolphin release if you installed a development build for testing.
- Lower internal resolution and close background applications.
- Allow the phone to cool and remove a thick case temporarily if it is clearly overheating.
- Test another graphics backend only after recording the original setting.
- Check that the game dump is complete and unchanged. A damaged dump can cause failures that look like emulator problems.
Safe-use checklist
- Install Dolphin from its official download page, not an APK mirror.
- Use game data dumped from a legitimately owned disc through a route permitted by local law.
- Never download a Super Mario Galaxy ROM, ISO or RVZ from a third-party link.
- Grant Android only the file access needed for your game directory.
- Keep the original dump and a backup separate from experimental copies.
- Map A, B, Nunchuk movement, pointer and motion before judging whether the game works.
- Use a wrist strap or secure grip for phone-sensor motion, and keep movements gentle.
- Change performance settings incrementally and avoid universal FPS claims.
Bottom line
A lawful Android setup is straightforward when you separate the emulator from the game data: install an official stable Dolphin build, point it at your own dump, then configure an emulated Wii Remote with A/B buttons, Nunchuk movement, a usable pointer and motion input. Touch controls are possible but demanding; a Bluetooth gamepad for Android usually provides the most practical everyday arrangement, while phone sensors can supply motion on supported devices. If the game is missing, controls drift or performance is poor, fix the directory, mapping, sensor source or graphics settings rather than downloading an unverified ROM or modified APK.
