Open Steam > Settings > Storage, add a library folder on the destination drive with the + button, then choose that library for new installations or use Move for a game already installed. Steam transfers the local files, so an existing game normally does not need to be downloaded again.
The safest setup is an internal drive, especially an internal SSD. Steam warns that installing to an external hard drive can cause performance problems, unexpected disconnections and corrupted library information. Back up saves separately when a game does not use Steam Cloud.

What you need before changing drives
Steam organizes installed games inside one or more Steam Library folders. A library can be on the Windows system drive or another internal drive, and Steam can use several libraries at once. The game files are usually under the library’s steamappscommon directory.
On a standard Windows installation, Steam’s default game location is:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon
You do not have to use that path. For example, you can create D:SteamLibrary on a second internal drive and let Steam manage the games there. The destination must be available to Windows whenever you want to launch, update or verify those games.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games.
- Make sure the destination drive is formatted and visible in File Explorer.
- Leave enough free space for the game and future updates; Steam may need temporary working space during installation or patching.
- Close other disk-intensive applications while moving a large library.
- Back up important saves before moving a game or the entire Steam client.
How to install a new Steam game on another drive
Add the destination as a Steam Library folder before starting the installation. Once it is registered, Steam will offer it in the game’s install-location menu.
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner, then choose Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Click the + button beside the listed drives and library locations.
- Select the destination drive and create or choose a library folder, such as
D:SteamLibrary. Confirm the folder when Steam prompts you. - Open your Library, select the game and click Install.
- In the installation dialog, open the location drop-down and choose the new Steam Library folder.
- Review the required space, then start the installation.
Steam now puts the game in the selected library rather than automatically using the system-drive library. The location remains available for later installations until you remove it from Steam’s storage settings.

Set a preferred default library
If you want most new games to go to the second drive, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the destination library and use its context menu to make it the default location, when that option is shown by your Steam client version. You can still choose another library for an individual game during installation.
Use a separate library for different types of games
Multiple libraries can be useful when one drive is a fast SSD and another is a larger-capacity disk. Keep frequently played or loading-sensitive games on the faster internal drive and place less frequently used titles on the larger drive. Steam does not publish one universal capacity, interface or speed requirement for a game library, so base the choice on your computer, available space and the games you actually install.
How to move an installed game without redownloading it
Steam’s move function transfers the existing local files between registered libraries. It is the normal way to free space on one drive or move a game to a new SSD.

Move games from Storage settings
- Confirm that the destination library already exists in Steam > Settings > Storage. If it does not, add it with + first.
- In Storage, select the drive or library that currently contains the game.
- Select the game you want to relocate.
- Click Move.
- Choose the destination Steam Library folder and confirm.
- Wait for Steam to finish transferring the files. Do not disconnect either drive or force-quit Steam during the operation.
After the transfer, Steam updates the installation path and the game remains in your Library. Because the files are copied locally, this process does not normally consume another full download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMove one game from its Library page
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Move Install Folder.
- Select an existing Steam Library on the destination drive and confirm the move.
This per-game route is convenient when you already know which title needs to move. Steam supports alternate libraries across multiple hard drives, so you can repeat the process for individual games rather than relocating the entire collection.
Storage move versus a manual folder copy
| Method | Best use | What Steam does | Redownload normally required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage manager | Moving one or several games between registered libraries | Transfers files and updates the library record | No |
| Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder | Moving a single title from its game page | Transfers that title to a selected library | No |
| Manual Explorer copy | Emergency recovery or a full-client migration when Steam is closed | Does not automatically update Steam’s records | Steam may need the library re-added or files verified |
Do not drag a game folder to a new drive while Steam is running and expect Steam to discover it automatically. If you copy files manually, use the recognition and verification steps below.
Move the complete Steam installation to a new drive
A game move changes where selected game files live. A full client migration changes the location of Steam itself and can also affect configuration, account data and shortcuts. Steam’s supported simple procedure preserves three important items: steamapps, userdata and steam.exe.
Prepare a backup
Before changing the client location, back up the entire steamapps folder to another location if you have room. This gives you a recovery copy if the move is interrupted or the new installation does not recognize the library. Also back up saves that are not synchronized through Steam Cloud; those may be outside the Steam folder.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Steam’s simple full-move procedure
- Exit Steam completely. Use Steam > Exit, then check the Windows notification area or Task Manager to make sure no Steam process is still writing to the old drive.
- In the existing Steam folder, retain
steamapps,userdataandsteam.exe. Move the Steam folder to the desired location on the new drive. - Launch
steam.exefrom the moved folder. - Sign in if Steam asks for your credentials.
- Open the Library and check that installed games appear.
- For important titles, open Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files after the move.
Preserving steamapps keeps the installed game data, while userdata contains Steam user data associated with the client. Keeping steam.exe in the moved folder lets Steam start from its new location.

- Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
- Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
- Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.
If the simple move fails
Steam documents a more thorough recovery path when old installation settings prevent the client from starting correctly.
- Exit Steam.
- Move the
steamappsfolder temporarily out of the Steam directory and keep a backup copy. - Uninstall Steam so the old installation settings are removed.
- Reinstall Steam in the desired folder on the new drive.
- Close the newly installed client.
- Place the saved
steamappsfolder into the new Steam folder. - Start Steam and verify the affected games through Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Use this longer route only after protecting the original files. Uninstalling the client without first securing steamapps can leave you dependent on a fresh download.
Will moving games delete saves?
Moving the installation folder does not intentionally delete a game’s save data, but save locations vary by game. Steam Cloud can synchronize saves for supported titles. Third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves or profiles outside the Steam directory, often under:
C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games
The exact folder is chosen by the game’s developer and may instead be under another location in your user profile. Before moving a drive or uninstalling Steam, identify the game’s save location and copy those files to a separate backup drive. Do not assume that a successful game-file move also moved saves stored in Documents, AppData or another custom folder.
Check cloud synchronization before relying on it
For a game that supports Steam Cloud, allow Steam to finish synchronizing before closing the client. After the move, start the game and confirm that the expected saves are present. Cloud synchronization is useful protection, not a replacement for a manual backup of valuable progress, especially before a full client migration.
Why Steam says a moved game is uninstalled
Steam can show an installed game as uninstalled when the files exist on disk but the client no longer has the library path registered. Re-adding the library is the first recovery step.

- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders. In current clients this opens the Storage manager.
- Click + and add the existing library folder on the drive where the game files reside.
- Confirm that the game folders are in the expected path:
[Steam Library]steamappscommon[Game folder]. - Return to the Library and check whether Steam detects the installation.
If the title still appears uninstalled, Steam recommends reinstalling the affected game. Start the installation into the same library that contains the existing files; Steam may discover and validate local data instead of downloading everything, but the exact result depends on the files present and the client’s records.
Repair a library that will not accept the game
For broader installation problems, use the library repair option in Storage settings if it is available for the selected library. Then select the game, open Properties > Installed Files and choose Verify Integrity of Game Files. Verification compares local files with Steam’s current records and replaces missing or damaged files. It can download data that is genuinely absent, so allow enough free space for the repair.
Common recognition failures
- Wrong folder selected: You added the drive root or a folder above the library instead of the folder containing
steamapps. - Nested library: The actual files are one level deeper than expected, such as
D:SteamLibrarySteamLibrarysteamapps. Add the folder that directly containssteamapps. - Drive letter changed: Windows assigned a different letter after reconnecting a disk. Restore the original letter in Windows Disk Management or add the library at its new path.
- Drive unavailable: A disconnected or sleeping external disk makes the library appear missing. Reconnect it, wait for Windows to mount it, then restart Steam.
- Incomplete transfer: A canceled move can leave missing files. Run file verification before attempting another move.
Choosing the destination drive
The practical decision is not simply “C drive or D drive.” Consider capacity, connection type, loading performance, write reliability and compatibility with the computer.
| Factor | Internal drive | External drive |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Mounted inside the computer and normally available at startup | Connected through a cable or enclosure and dependent on that connection |
| Performance consistency | Usually more consistent for game loading and updates | Can vary with the interface, enclosure, cable and other devices |
| Reliability during writes | Less likely to disconnect accidentally | Unexpected removal can corrupt library or installation information |
| Capacity planning | Choose a size that fits the current library and expected updates | Large capacity may be convenient, but it does not remove disconnect risks |
| Steam guidance | Preferred when possible | Steam does not recommend installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues |
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also warns that an external drive can disconnect unexpectedly and corrupt library or installation information. If an external drive is unavoidable, keep it connected before starting Steam, use a stable power source and avoid unplugging it while games are running, updating or moving.
SSD versus hard disk
An SSD generally offers faster access than a mechanical hard disk, but Steam does not specify one universal SSD model, interface or minimum speed for all games. Check the requirements of the particular title and the interfaces supported by your computer. Capacity matters as much as speed: a nearly full drive can leave too little room for updates, temporary files and additional games.
Quick Recap
Safe operating checklist
- Create the destination Steam Library in Storage settings before moving or installing anything.
- Use Steam’s Move command rather than renaming or dragging a live game folder.
- Keep both source and destination drives connected until Steam reports completion.
- Do not shut down Windows during a transfer.
- Back up
steamappsbefore a full client migration. - Back up non-cloud saves from Documents, AppData or the developer’s specified folder.
- Verify important games after a move, especially if the client was reinstalled.
- Keep the destination drive’s letter and mount point stable.
- Maintain free space for patches and verification downloads.
When to use each approach
| Your goal | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| Install a new game on D: | Add a library such as D:SteamLibrary in Settings > Storage, then select it during installation. |
| Free space on C: for one title | Use Settings > Storage, select the game and click Move. |
| Move one known game from its page | Use Library > Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder. |
| Move Steam and its libraries together | Exit Steam, preserve steamapps, userdata and steam.exe, move the folder, then verify files. |
| Recover games after a manual copy | Re-add the existing library in Storage, check the steamappscommon path and verify integrity. |
Final checks after the move
- Open the game’s Properties > Installed Files page and confirm the displayed install location is the intended library.
- Launch the game and check that saves, settings and controller profiles are present.
- Close the game normally, then reopen Steam to ensure the library remains visible after a restart.
- Start a small update or verify files if you suspect that the transfer was interrupted.
- Only delete the old copy after the new installation launches successfully and your save backup is safe.
