What you need before installing
The installation is a server-side file deployment. A client who joins your server does not need to copy SourceMod or Metamod files to their own computer. You need administrative access to the dedicated server, permission to write to its game files, and a way to restart the process after each major installation step.

Left 4 Dead 2 uses Steam application ID 222860. In a normal dedicated-server installation, the target mod directory is named left4dead2. The parent path depends on how SteamCMD or your hosting provider laid out the installation, so do not assume a fixed drive, home directory, or provider-specific path.
Find the correct left4dead2 directory
Copying files one level too high is the most common reason an apparently complete installation does nothing. Locate the directory that belongs to the running dedicated server, then confirm that it contains the game’s steam.inf file. That folder, rather than its parent, is the destination for both archives.

Windows installations
On Windows, the game directory is commonly beside the dedicated-server executable. The exact location varies with the SteamCMD installation and any custom folder chosen during setup. Open the folder used by the server process and look for left4dead2; inside it, verify steam.inf before copying files.
Linux installations
On Linux, the folder is normally the left4dead2 directory beneath the SRCDS installation. Providers may place SRCDS under a home directory, a service account, or a custom volume. Follow the path used by the running instance, not a second copy that happens to have the same name.

A managed host may hide the physical installation path. Use the provider’s file manager or FTP account to open the game’s mod folder. If you cannot identify the folder containing steam.inf, ask the provider which directory belongs to the Left 4 Dead 2 instance and whether they allow Metamod:Source and SourceMod. You also need a provider-supported way to perform a full restart after uploading files.
Install in the required order
- Prepare or stop the dedicated server and identify its
left4dead2directory. - Install the Metamod:Source archive that matches the server’s operating system.
- Start the server and confirm Metamod:Source with
meta version. - Stop the server again, install the OS-matched SourceMod archive into the same directory, and then start it.
- Run
meta listandsm versionto verify that SourceMod loaded through Metamod.
Do not reverse the order. Installing SourceMod before its loader is present leaves the server without the component that can read and run SourceMod.
Install Metamod:Source first
Download the matching package
Obtain a Metamod:Source archive for the operating system used by the dedicated server. A Windows archive belongs on a Windows server and a Linux archive belongs on a Linux server. A package that is correct for a different operating system can leave the expected files in place while still failing to load.

Extract into the game directory
Extract the archive’s contents directly into left4dead2, preserving the folders supplied by the package. A normal result includes an addons/metamod tree and the loader files supplied with the release. Do not create an extra layer such as left4dead2/metamod-package/left4dead2; the archive’s addons directory must merge with the game’s own addons directory.
Restart and test the loader
Start the dedicated server fully, then open its server console or connect through RCON. Run:
meta versionA recognized command followed by Metamod:Source version information indicates that the loader is active. If the command is unknown, stop and correct the Metamod installation before adding SourceMod. SourceMod requires Metamod:Source 1.9.0 or higher; using the latest compatible release is recommended by the AlliedModders installation guidance.
Install SourceMod into the same directory
Choose the SourceMod archive
Download the SourceMod archive for the server’s operating system. Keep the archive’s folder structure intact when extracting. SourceMod is a server component, so perform this operation on the machine that runs the dedicated server or on a local computer before uploading the extracted files to a remote host.
Local server procedure
With the server stopped, extract the package into the same left4dead2 directory used for Metamod:Source. Allow the package’s folders to merge with existing folders. The package supplies the SourceMod files under addons/sourcemod and configuration files under the game’s configuration area.

Remote server procedure
For FTP or web-panel hosting, extract the archive on your computer first. Upload the extracted addons contents so the remote server ends up with left4dead2/addons/sourcemod alongside left4dead2/addons/metamod. Upload the accompanying configuration files to the locations represented by the archive; do not upload only a compressed file unless the panel explicitly supports server-side extraction and preserves the same paths.
Do not mistake scripting files for a requirement
The addons/sourcemod/scripting directory is included for compiling plugins. It is not required merely to run SourceMod. Leave it in place if you expect to compile plugins on the server, but its absence does not by itself explain a failure of the core SourceMod loader.
Expected directory layout
After both packages are installed, the important high-level structure should resemble this:

metamod/
sourcemod/
cfg/
sourcemod/The listing is a structural check, not a promise that every release contains only these files. Metamod:Source also places loader files supplied by its archive in the game directory. SourceMod supplies its own configuration files. Preserve any additional files that came with the packages rather than moving them into a personally chosen folder.
Restart and verify SourceMod
Perform a complete stop-and-start after copying SourceMod. A map change or a client reconnect does not replace a process restart for loader files. Once the server is accepting console or RCON commands, run the following checks in order:

meta version— prints Metamod:Source version information. If this is unknown, the loader is not active and SourceMod cannot load.meta list— lists loaded Metamod plugins. SourceMod should appear as a loaded plugin.sm version— prints SourceMod version information. A response confirms that the SourceMod command layer is available.
Run these commands in the server console or through RCON, not in the player’s game console. The client console does not inspect the dedicated server’s plugin state.

meta version is unknown
Check the destination first. The files must be under the active server’s left4dead2 directory, not beside it or in the parent directory. Confirm that the archive matched the operating system, then perform a full restart. If the command remains unknown, follow the Metamod:Source troubleshooting path rather than proceeding to SourceMod.

Metamod works but meta list does not show SourceMod
Confirm that the SourceMod archive was extracted into the same game directory as Metamod:Source and that the resulting path is exactly left4dead2/addons/sourcemod. On a remote host, inspect the uploaded folders instead of assuming the panel stripped or added a directory level. Verify that the server was restarted after the upload.
sm version is unknown
An unknown sm version command means the SourceMod command layer did not load. Recheck the operating-system package, the destination path, and the restart. If meta list does not show SourceMod, solve that loading problem first; reinstalling individual plugin files will not fix a missing core load.
Files appear correct but a game update changed behavior
Valve updates can temporarily break extensions and compatibility assumptions. Check the required-version information for the current Metamod:Source and SourceMod releases. When an update requires it, use compatible snapshot builds of both projects rather than assuming an older package will continue to operate unchanged.
The host will not let you upload or restart
Some providers restrict executable files, FTP paths, or restart controls. Ask support whether Metamod:Source and SourceMod are supported, where the active left4dead2 directory is located, and how to perform a complete restart. Without file-transfer access and restart access, you cannot independently complete the installation.

Choose a self-hosted or provider-managed route
The software itself is free; the practical difference is how much control you have over files and the server process. Compare the route you are considering against the capabilities below.

Remote users may need provider assistance with FTP and restarts. Treat that as a prerequisite, not an optional convenience: a correct archive is useless if it cannot reach the active game directory or the process cannot be restarted.
Keep the installation maintainable
Record the active paths
Write down the full path to the server’s left4dead2 directory and the date and version shown by meta version and sm version. This prevents a later update from being copied into a second installation and gives you a reference when contacting a host.
Back up before replacing packages
Before changing Metamod:Source or SourceMod, copy the existing addons and SourceMod configuration folders. A backup lets you restore the known working layout if a new build is incompatible with the current game version.
Update both layers deliberately
Because SourceMod runs through Metamod:Source, assess them as a pair after a game update. Check the version requirements, install compatible builds, restart completely, and repeat meta version, meta list, and sm version. Do not infer a successful update from the server starting alone; the verification commands provide the useful evidence.
Separate core loading from plugin problems
First establish that Metamod:Source responds to meta version. Next establish that SourceMod appears in meta list and responds to sm version. Only after those checks pass should you investigate an individual plugin. This sequence prevents a plugin issue from being confused with a misplaced or incompatible core installation.
