RPCS3 uses two separate installation workflows: install the official PlayStation 3 system firmware file, PS3UPDAT.PUP, from File → Install Firmware; then install each game’s region-matched update package, a .pkg file, from File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats. Firmware prepares the emulator’s PS3 software environment. A title update changes one specific game. Neither process supplies games, and neither requires copying files into a random RPCS3 folder.
What you need before installing anything
Set up RPCS3 on a computer that can already launch the emulator, and use content you are legally entitled to use. RPCS3’s setup guidance separates official system software from game data: obtain the firmware from Sony or from your own PS3, and add game dumps made from games you own. Installing firmware does not create a game dump, unlock a title, or provide a title update.

- RPCS3: an installed copy of the emulator. Menu wording can vary slightly between builds, but the firmware and package installer are available from the File menu.
- Official firmware: a file named
PS3UPDAT.PUPdownloaded from Sony’s PlayStation 3 system-software support page or obtained from your own console. - A legally created game dump: a folder-format game, disc image, or other format supported by your RPCS3 build, added through File → Add Games.
- A title update package, when one exists: a game-specific
.pkgwhose title and region ID match the installed game. - Enough storage: space for the firmware, game dump, update package, and the installed data RPCS3 creates. Sony’s 200 MB figure applies to updating a physical PS3, not to RPCS3’s storage requirement.
Keep the downloaded files in an easy-to-find folder such as a temporary Downloads subfolder. RPCS3 reads the selected file during installation; you do not need to rename a game update to PS3UPDAT.PUP, and you should not treat a title-update package as firmware.

The filename is the quickest way to tell the two RPCS3 workflows apart. A .PUP is system firmware; a .pkg is a package, commonly a game update or PSN-distributed content. A package may also be accompanied by RAP or EDAT license files, which is why RPCS3 labels that menu “Install Packages/Raps/Edats.”

Step 1: obtain the official PS3 firmware
Use Sony’s official PS3 system-software support page or firmware extracted from your own console. RPCS3’s setup documentation specifically directs users to obtain the official file legally and warns against unofficial firmware downloads. The file should be named PS3UPDAT.PUP. If your browser adds a second extension, such as .zip or .html, you did not obtain the usable firmware file; download it again from the official source and confirm that the final extension is .PUP.
Check the file before selecting it
- Make sure the download completed rather than leaving a partial file.
- Confirm that the name is exactly
PS3UPDAT.PUP(capitalization is conventional; the extension is the important part). - Do not substitute a game
.pkg, a compressed archive, or a folder namedPS3_UPDATE. - Keep the original file until RPCS3 accepts it and completes installation, so you can retry without downloading again.
Sony currently lists PS3 system software version 4.93 and describes that release as improving system performance. That version label describes Sony’s console firmware release; it is not an RPCS3 performance rating or a promise that every game behaves identically after installation.
Step 2: install firmware in RPCS3
- Launch RPCS3.
- Open File → Install Firmware.
- Browse to the official
PS3UPDAT.PUPfile and select it. - Confirm the installation when RPCS3 asks. Let the process finish; do not close the emulator while it is processing the firmware.
- Wait for RPCS3 to return to its normal window. If the emulator reports success, the firmware installation is complete.
The firmware is installed through RPCS3’s menu, not by placing the file in the emulator’s installation directory. Repeating the menu command with the same valid file is normally preferable to manually deleting internal files when you are diagnosing a failed first attempt.
If the firmware installer rejects the file
- “Invalid” or no file appears: verify that the selected item is the actual
.PUPdownload, not a browser page or archive. Check the extension in your file manager. - The dialog opens in the wrong folder: navigate to the location where the Sony download was saved; RPCS3 does not require a special folder.
- The emulator closes or freezes: restart RPCS3 and retry with a fresh official download. Avoid interrupting the process or running multiple emulator instances.
- You installed a package by mistake: the package installer and firmware installer are separate menu commands. Return to File → Install Firmware and select the
.PUP.
If a valid official file still fails, record the exact RPCS3 error and the emulator build you are using before seeking build-specific help. Interface labels and validation behavior can change between builds, so an error message is more useful than a guess about which internal folder to edit.

Step 3: add your legally owned game
After firmware installation, add the game dump through File → Add Games. Select the folder that contains the game data, or the location recommended for the dump format you created. RPCS3 scans that location and adds recognized titles to its game list.
What firmware does not do
- It does not install a game from a disc image or supply a digital license.
- It does not turn a folder into a usable dump if the dump is incomplete.
- It does not automatically download every title update.
Launch the game once, if possible, before installing an update. Note the title name, serial or title ID, and region shown by RPCS3. Those details are the reference you need when selecting a matching update package.
Step 4: install a game update package
Game updates are distributed as title-specific .pkg files. RPCS3’s Quickstart guidance uses the same built-in installer used for PSN packages.

- Choose File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats.
- Select the game-update
.pkgfile. If you have several packages, select the update intended for the same title and region as your installed game. - Confirm the installation and wait for RPCS3 to finish processing the package.
- Start the game and check its information or title screen for the installed version, when the game exposes one.
You do not need to extract the .pkg into the game’s folder first. Selecting the package through RPCS3 lets the emulator place and register the update correctly. If the package installer also receives RAP or EDAT files, use the same menu and follow the prompts for those license files; do not rename them as firmware.

Why the region and title ID must match
A title update is not interchangeable across every release of a game. The update’s title or region ID must correspond to the installed game. For example, two releases with the same name can have different regional identifiers and therefore require different packages.
The RPCS3 Quickstart guidance warns that mixing regions can damage title data. The practical rule is simple: compare the game’s serial or region information in RPCS3 with the identifier shown by the update source, and install only a package that matches. Do not assume that a package marked for one region will work because the disc art or game title looks identical.
Signs of a mismatched update
- RPCS3 refuses to install the package or reports that it does not apply to the installed title.
- The update appears to install, but the game remains at its old version.
- The game stops booting, crashes during startup, or reports damaged data after the package is applied.
If a mismatch is suspected, stop installing additional packages. Remove the incompatible update using the game’s installed-data management options in RPCS3, restore a clean copy of the game data if necessary, and retry only with a package carrying the exact title and region ID. Keep backups of your legally created dump and save data before experimenting with multiple packages.

RPCS3’s game list and the game’s own menus provide different kinds of information. Check the title entry after installation and, where available, open the game’s information or installed-content view to see the update version. Some games show a version number on their title screen; others only reveal changes through added features or compatibility fixes.

Use RPCS3’s current compatibility-list entry for the exact title and region. The list changes over time and may include title-specific update information for some games, but not every game has the same update availability or behavior. A package listed for a similarly named release is not evidence that it matches your copy.
When the update does not appear to work
- Quit the game completely and relaunch it; an already running process may not see newly installed data.
- Confirm that the package installer reported completion rather than an error.
- Recheck the game’s serial, region, and installed update identifier.
- Check RPCS3’s compatibility entry for known title-specific requirements or update notes.
- If the game became unstable immediately after installation, remove the update or restore the clean game data, then test the unpatched dump.
Do not follow the physical-PS3 USB procedure inside RPCS3
Sony’s support instructions for a real PS3 describe a different workflow: format a USB drive as FAT32, create the folders PS3/UPDATE, save the download as PS3UPDAT.PUP, connect the drive to the console, and select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Sony states that a physical PS3 needs at least 200 MB of free space on its hard drive or removable storage for that console update.
Those directions are useful when updating Sony hardware, but they are not required for RPCS3. In the emulator, select the file from File → Install Firmware. A USB drive is therefore optional for this computer workflow, and copying PS3UPDAT.PUP to a FAT32 stick will not install firmware in RPCS3 by itself.

The same safety principle applies here: use the official firmware file, and keep game packages tied to games and regions you are entitled to use.
Troubleshooting by symptom
RPCS3 says no firmware is installed
Run File → Install Firmware again and select PS3UPDAT.PUP. If you only added a game through File → Add Games, that does not install system software; the two operations are independent.
The package installer cannot find my update
Confirm that the file ends in .pkg, that the download is complete, and that you opened File > Install Packages/Raps/Edats rather than the firmware command. Move the package to a simple local folder and browse to it again if the original path is on disconnected or removable storage.
The update installs but the game version does not change
Check the title and region ID first. Then fully quit and relaunch the game, and inspect its installed-content or information screen. If the package belongs to another regional release, uninstall it or restore clean game data before trying the correct package.
The game broke after an update
Do not stack more updates on top of a suspected mismatch. Preserve saves, remove the problematic title update where RPCS3 allows it, and test the original dump. Consult the current compatibility entry for the exact title and region before reinstalling any package.
I cannot find a compatible update
Not every title has an available package in every region, and RPCS3’s compatibility information changes over time. Check the exact game entry rather than searching by name alone. If no matching package is listed, leave the game unpatched instead of applying a package from another region.
