Start with Ubuntu’s built-in printer setup before downloading a vendor driver. In Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon, released 23 April 2026), many USB and network printers are detected automatically. If the printer is missing from the Add Printer window, record its complete model number, connection type and any error message, then choose a driver path that matches that exact model.
Before installing anything
Find the manufacturer and full model number on the printer label, its display or its existing documentation. Also note:

- Whether it connects by USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Whether you need printing only, or scanning and fax functions as well.
- Your Ubuntu computer’s CPU architecture, such as amd64 or arm64.
- The exact discovery or print error if Ubuntu cannot add it.
These details matter because support is model- and protocol-dependent. No single HP, Brother, Canon or Epson package works with every printer from that brand.

- Connect the printer by USB, or connect it to the same network as the Ubuntu computer.
- Open Activities, search for Printers, and open the Printers settings panel.
- Select Add Printer. Ubuntu may request your administrator password.
- Choose the discovered printer and accept the suggested connection and driver.
- Print a test page, then check paper size, orientation, color and other printer options.
For a network printer that does not appear, use the Add Printer dialog’s option to enter its known network address. Confirm that the printer and computer are on the same network and that the address is current.

Ubuntu’s user documentation states: “If your printer does not appear in the Add Printer window, you may need to install print drivers.” That message is a decision point, not a reason to install a random universal package.
When driverless printing is enough
Ubuntu 26.04 includes documentation for ipp-usb, a service that enables driverless printing and scanning over USB for compatible AirPrint printers and multifunction peripherals. This applies only to USB devices that support the required AirPrint/IP-over-USB protocols; it does not cover every USB printer.

If such a device is connected but not detected, make sure the ipp-usb service is installed and running through Ubuntu’s normal package-management tools, then reopen Printers and try Add Printer again. A working print queue does not prove that the scanner is configured: test scanning separately.

HP printers
HP directs Linux users to HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP), and notes that HPLIP is not hosted by HP Customer Support. Check the exact model in HPLIP’s supported-device information before installing or configuring it. Ubuntu’s archive availability means the package can be obtained for the listed release; it is not a compatibility guarantee for every HP printer.

A hp-setup manual page commonly found online describes an HPLIP setup utility, but the available page is for Ubuntu Jammy, not Resolute. Do not assume its options or behavior are unchanged on 26.04. Inspect the help or manual page belonging to the HPLIP package actually installed on your system before following command-line instructions.
Brother, Canon and Epson printers
Download only from the manufacturer’s support page for the complete model and your country or region. Confirm that the package explicitly supports Ubuntu 26.04, or obtain the vendor’s documented installation guidance for that release. Check whether the download is a Debian package, an installer archive or another format, and select the package matching your computer’s architecture.

Do not substitute an older Ubuntu guide as proof of current compatibility. If the vendor page lists only a different Ubuntu release, first try Ubuntu’s automatic setup or driverless protocol support; install the vendor package only when its instructions match your model and release.

USB versus network setup
USB printers
Connect the printer directly, wait briefly, and return to Settings > Printers > Add Printer. A compatible AirPrint/IP-over-USB device may work through ipp-usb without a vendor driver. If Ubuntu offers several queues, select the one identifying the intended USB device and avoid duplicate entries from previous attempts.

Wi-Fi and Ethernet printers
Give the printer a stable network connection and add it from the Printers panel. If discovery fails, enter the printer’s known address in the dialog. A network queue can use a driverless IPP protocol or a model-specific driver; the correct choice depends on what the printer advertises and what Ubuntu identifies.
Multifunction printers: test each function
Printing, scanning and faxing can use different components. After adding a multifunction printer, print a test page first. Then open your scanning application and confirm that the scanner is visible. For supported AirPrint multifunction devices, Ubuntu’s ipp-usb documentation describes IPP printing and eSCL scanning, but compatibility still depends on the exact device.
If installation still fails
- Recheck the full model number; a similar-looking model may require a different driver.
- For network devices, verify the address, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and that the computer is on the same network.
- Remove duplicate or failed printer entries, then repeat Add Printer.
- Capture the exact error text before searching the manufacturer’s support site.
- For HP, verify HPLIP model support rather than assuming the Ubuntu package supports the whole product line.
- For Brother, Canon and Epson, contact the manufacturer or follow its model-specific Linux instructions when no Ubuntu 26.04 package is listed.
- Test printing and scanning separately on multifunction devices.
Which driver do you need?
Use this order: Ubuntu’s automatically selected driver first; a driverless IPP/AirPrint or compatible USB setup second; and a manufacturer package for the exact model when detection fails or required features are missing. The package’s presence in Ubuntu’s archive or on a vendor website is not, by itself, evidence that every printer in that brand is supported.
