How to Install phpBB on a VPS (Ubuntu, Apache or nginx)

To install phpBB on a VPS, provision a supported PHP and database stack, create a dedicated database account, upload the complete phpBB release, run the web installer at /install/, then remove the installer and lock down the server. The exact PHP range depends on the release you download: phpBB 3.3.x supports PHP 7.2.0 through 8.3, while phpBB 4.0.x requires PHP 8.2.0 through 8.5. Choose the release first and follow that release’s requirements rather than mixing instructions between major versions.

1. Choose the phpBB release and VPS stack first

phpBB’s requirements are release-specific. The phpBB 3.3.x documentation lists PHP 7.2.0 or newer through PHP 8.3, the json, mbstring and XML extensions, getimagesize(), and support for MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. The current phpBB 4.0.x requirements document lists PHP 8.2.0 through 8.5 and newer database minimums. Download a particular release before provisioning the server, then use its requirements page as the final authority.

Decision Practical choice What to verify
Operating system Ubuntu Server LTS is a straightforward VPS base. Supported package versions, security updates and SSH access.
Web server Apache is the simplest first installation because phpBB includes Apache protection files. nginx also works. PHP execution, URL rewriting and direct-access denial rules.
PHP Install a version inside the range for the selected phpBB release. json, mbstring, XML, the database driver and getimagesize().
Database MySQL or MariaDB is a common VPS pairing; PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle are supported by phpBB 3.3.x. That the selected release supports the engine and that its PHP driver is installed.
Hostname Use a domain or test hostname such as forum.example.com. DNS points to the VPS before requesting HTTPS.

Do not assume that a distribution’s newest PHP package is valid for every phpBB branch. A phpBB 3.3.x installation on PHP 8.4, for example, is outside the 3.3.x range stated above; a phpBB 4.0.x installation on PHP 8.1 is below its stated floor.

2. Prepare and patch the VPS

Confirm access and DNS

  • Log in over SSH with an administrative account or an account that can use sudo.
  • Point an A or AAAA record for the forum hostname at the VPS address. Keep the hostname stable; it is used in links, cookies and email.
  • Check available disk space and memory before uploading the archive. Leave room for uploaded files, database growth and backups.

Apply operating-system updates

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y

Reboot if the package manager installs a new kernel, then reconnect over SSH. Decide whether Apache or nginx will own ports 80 and 443; do not install two web servers that compete for the same ports.

3. Install PHP, the web server and database

Apache, PHP and MySQL/MariaDB on Ubuntu

For an Apache installation using MySQL or MariaDB, install the distribution packages that match the PHP version required by your phpBB release:

sudo apt install apache2 mysql-server php php-cli libapache2-mod-php
  php-mysql php-xml php-mbstring php-gd php-curl unzip -y

Ubuntu may provide json as part of the core PHP package rather than as a separate package. The image functions used by phpBB come from the GD package on typical Ubuntu builds. If you choose MariaDB, install its server package and the same PHP MySQL driver; the SQL commands below use syntax accepted by both.

Verify the PHP runtime before opening the installer

php -v
php -m
php -r 'var_export(function_exists("getimagesize")); echo PHP_EOL;'

The module list must include json, mbstring and an XML module such as xml. The final command should print true. Install or enable the missing module, restart Apache, and repeat the check. Also install the PHP driver for the database you selected: php-mysql for MySQL/MariaDB or php-pgsql for PostgreSQL, for example.

nginx alternative

nginx requires PHP-FPM instead of Apache’s PHP module. Install nginx, the appropriate php-fpm package and the database driver. Your server block must set the phpBB document root, pass .php requests to the PHP-FPM socket for the installed version, and deny direct requests to private directories. The socket name changes with the PHP version (for example, a PHP 8.3 package commonly uses a path containing php8.3-fpm.sock), so use the path created by your package manager rather than copying a version-specific example blindly.

4. Create a dedicated database and user

Use a separate database and account for each board. Record the database type, host, port, database name, username and password; the installer asks for these values. A dedicated account limits the damage if application credentials are exposed.

sudo mysql
CREATE DATABASE phpbb CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'phpbb_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-random-password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON phpbb.* TO 'phpbb_user'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

Replace the example password with a unique random value and do not reuse it for SSH, email or another application. If the database runs on a separate host, create the account for the required source address instead of localhost, restrict the database firewall to that address, and use the non-default port only when your provider requires it. Keep the database bound to a private interface unless remote access is genuinely needed.

Granting all privileges on the single phpBB database is different from granting server-wide administrative privileges. Do not use the database root account in phpBB’s installer.

5. Download and place the complete phpBB package

Get an intact release archive

Download the chosen release from the official phpBB downloads page. Preserve the archive’s directory structure; do not upload only selected PHP files. If checksums or signatures are published for that release, verify the archive before extracting it.

You can upload from a workstation with scp:

scp phpBB-release.zip [email protected]:/tmp/

On the VPS, create the document root and extract the archive. The exact archive directory name varies by release, so inspect it before moving files:

sudo mkdir -p /var/www/phpbb
cd /tmp
unzip phpBB-release.zip
ls
sudo cp -a phpBB/. /var/www/phpbb/

The directory containing index.php, common.php, config.php (created during installation) and the install directory must be the web root. If you want the board at forum.example.com/forum/, put that directory one level below the virtual host’s document root and use the matching URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Configure the virtual host

Apache example

Create a site definition that points only to the phpBB directory:

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName forum.example.com
    DocumentRoot /var/www/phpbb

    <Directory /var/www/phpbb>
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
    </Directory>

    ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/phpbb-error.log
    CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/phpbb-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>

Save it as an Apache site file, enable it and enable the modules commonly needed for phpBB:

sudo a2ensite phpbb.conf
sudo a2enmod rewrite headers
sudo apache2ctl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2

Use the actual filename you created in place of phpbb.conf. Resolve every error from configtest before continuing. Keep phpBB’s supplied .htaccess files; they provide important Apache restrictions.

nginx requirements

For nginx, set root to /var/www/phpbb, configure an index containing index.php, pass PHP requests to the matching FPM socket, and deny access to private paths. Test with sudo nginx -t before reloading. nginx does not read Apache .htaccess files, so rules for cache/, files/, includes/, phpbb/, store/ and vendor/ must be expressed in the nginx configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Set temporary permissions and run the web installer

Allow only the writes the installer needs

The web-server user must be able to write the generated configuration and phpBB’s runtime directories during setup. On a typical Ubuntu Apache installation that user is www-data. Do not make the entire tree world-writable with chmod -R 777.

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/phpbb

This broad ownership change is convenient for the installation phase. You will tighten it after the installer completes. If your distribution uses a different web-server account, substitute that account.

Open the installer

  1. Visit https://forum.example.com/install/, or use the equivalent path if phpBB is installed in a subdirectory. If HTTPS is not ready yet, use the temporary HTTP hostname only long enough to complete setup, then configure TLS before inviting users.
  2. The first page is the Requirements list. phpBB checks PHP, extensions, the database connection and filesystem permissions. It will not continue until required checks pass.
  3. Select Install.
  4. Enter the database type, server hostname, port if non-default, database name, database username and password created earlier. For a local database, the host is commonly localhost; use the value your database service requires.
  5. Enter the board name, administrator username, administrator password and administrator email address. Use a unique administrator password and an address you can actually monitor.
  6. Leave advanced settings at their defaults unless you have a specific reason to change them. They can be adjusted later in the Administration Control Panel.
  7. Submit the form and wait for phpBB to create the schema and configuration.

When phpBB cannot write config.php

Some ownership or filesystem layouts prevent the installer from writing config.php. The installer can generate the file for download instead. Download that generated file exactly as instructed, upload it to the phpBB root as /var/www/phpbb/config.php, and set ownership and permissions so the web server can read it but unprivileged users cannot:

sudo chown root:www-data /var/www/phpbb/config.php
sudo chmod 640 /var/www/phpbb/config.php

Do not paste database credentials into a public web page, ticket or shell command that will remain in history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Finish the installation and lock down the files

Remove the installer directory

After the board loads and you can sign in to the Administration Control Panel, delete the entire install/ directory:

sudo rm -rf /var/www/phpbb/install

phpBB keeps the Administration Control Panel restricted while this directory exists. Leaving it in place also leaves an unnecessary setup surface on a public server.

Restore restrictive ownership and modes

The exact writable paths can vary by phpBB release and enabled extensions. A conservative Apache layout is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo chown -R root:www-data /var/www/phpbb
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type d -exec chmod 750 {} ;
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type f -exec chmod 640 {} ;
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/phpbb/cache /var/www/phpbb/files /var/www/phpbb/store
sudo chmod -R 770 /var/www/phpbb/cache /var/www/phpbb/files /var/www/phpbb/store

Check the release documentation before applying this if you use extensions that need another directory to be writable. The goal is to grant write access only to runtime, upload and cache locations, not to every source file.

Deny direct access to private directories

Direct web requests should not expose directory listings or source files in cache/, files/, includes/, phpbb/, store/ or vendor/. phpBB supplies Apache protections and documents nginx equivalents. Confirm that your web-server configuration preserves those protections; add explicit deny rules where your server does not inherit them. A request to one of these paths should return a denial response, not a directory listing.

9. Enable HTTPS, SSH protection and a firewall

  • Obtain a TLS certificate for the real forum hostname using an ACME client or your hosting provider, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and test the login and posting pages after the redirect.
  • Allow SSH only from trusted addresses where practical. Prefer SSH keys, disable password authentication after confirming key access, and do not run routine administration as the root user.
  • On Ubuntu’s uncomplicated firewall, allow only the services you use, typically SSH, HTTP and HTTPS:
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status

Do not expose the database port to the public internet when the database is local. If a separate database host is required, allow the port only between the two private addresses and use database-level authentication as well.

10. Validate the working board before announcing it

These checks catch configuration errors that a successful installer screen does not:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open the public board in a private browser window and confirm that CSS, JavaScript and images load over HTTPS without mixed-content warnings.
  • Sign in to the Administration Control Panel and create a test forum, group and administrator-only permission. Confirm that a normal test account cannot see the restricted area.
  • Create a test post with an attachment. Verify that the upload succeeds, the file can be displayed through the board, and the server’s upload limits are appropriate.
  • Send a test email for registration or password recovery. If delivery fails, inspect phpBB’s email settings and the mail service logs rather than weakening authentication.
  • Request a URL under each protected directory and confirm that it is denied. Never accept a directory index showing cache, upload or vendor contents.
  • Review Apache or nginx error logs and the PHP-FPM log, if used. Fix warnings before traffic arrives.
  • Check disk usage, system time and log rotation. A full disk can prevent posts, sessions and backups from being written.

11. Choose a database and deployment method consciously

Option Advantages Trade-offs
Apache Simple PHP integration and phpBB’s supplied Apache protection files. Per-directory configuration can be less explicit than a carefully written nginx server block.
nginx with PHP-FPM Explicit request routing and a common high-traffic VPS architecture. You must translate every required access rule into nginx syntax; .htaccess files are ignored.
MySQL or MariaDB Broad hosting-provider availability and familiar backup tooling. Requires the matching PHP driver and a properly secured database account.
PostgreSQL Supported by phpBB releases that list it and a good fit when it is your operational standard. Install and maintain the PostgreSQL PHP driver and use PostgreSQL-specific backup procedures.
SQLite Minimal separate-service setup for an environment where its limitations are acceptable. File permissions and backup consistency become especially important; confirm suitability for your board before choosing it.
Managed image or control panel Fast provisioning and provider-managed service integration. Less transparency over package versions, filesystem rules and update timing.
Manual command-line deployment Full control over versions, ownership, firewall and backups. You are responsible for patching the OS, PHP, web server, database and phpBB.

The compatibility lists establish which engines phpBB supports; they do not provide performance benchmarks. Choose based on the database you can patch, monitor and restore reliably, not on an assumed speed ranking.

12. Back up before every update and test recovery

Back up the database

For MySQL or MariaDB, create a dated dump and let the client prompt for the password rather than placing it in the command line:

mkdir -p ~/phpbb-backups
mysqldump -u phpbb_user -p --single-transaction phpbb
  > ~/phpbb-backups/phpbb-$(date +%F).sql

Use the native backup tool for PostgreSQL or another selected engine. Store at least one copy outside the VPS and protect it as carefully as the live database.

Back up files

sudo tar -czf ~/phpbb-backups/phpbb-files-$(date +%F).tar.gz
  -C /var/www phpbb

The file backup must include config.php, uploaded files and images, installed extensions and any customized styles. Keep a tested procedure for restoring both the database and files; an untested archive is not a recovery plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update source and database together

Before an update, back up the database and files, read the release instructions, and put the board into maintenance mode if the release supports it. Replace or update the phpBB source files as documented, preserve config.php, uploads and extensions as appropriate, then run the documented web updater or command-line migration for that release. Updating only the database is incomplete: phpBB’s installation documentation specifically instructs administrators to update the source files too. Remove the install/ directory again when the migration finishes, restore restrictive permissions, and test login, posting, uploads and extensions.

13. Spam, abuse and ongoing operations

Public phpBB boards attract automated registration and posting attempts soon after exposure. Enable a current CAPTCHA or other anti-spam configuration, require email confirmation where appropriate, give moderators only the permissions they need, and apply rate limiting at the edge or web-server layer. Review failed logins and registration activity, keep the operating system and PHP patched, and monitor disk space and error logs.

Never publish config.php, database dumps, private keys or shell-history files. Rotate credentials if a backup, log or support attachment exposes them. Keep a written inventory of the PHP version, database engine, web-server configuration, extensions and backup locations so another administrator can recover the board.

14. Troubleshoot the common installation failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Requirements page marks PHP or an extension as missing Unsupported PHP version or a package is not enabled. Compare php -v and php -m with the selected release’s requirements, install the matching package, restart the web service and reload the page.
Database connection refused Wrong host, port, service state or firewall rule. Check systemctl status mysql (or the relevant service), confirm the host and port, and test from the VPS with the same database account.
Access denied for the database user Password mismatch or the account was created for a different host. Reset the password, verify the account’s host component, and enter the exact credentials in the installer.
Installer cannot write config.php Web-server ownership or mode does not permit the write. Use the installer’s generated-file download procedure, place config.php in the forum root, then set controlled ownership and mode.
403 errors after enabling nginx Missing location rules, wrong document root or PHP-FPM permissions. Check the root path, FPM socket, deny rules and nginx -t output; inspect the error log for the exact path.
Uploads fail while pages work Writable-directory permissions or PHP upload limits. Check ownership of files/, the relevant PHP upload and post-size settings, available disk space and the web-server log.
Board still warns that installation is present The install/ directory was not completely removed. Delete the directory from the actual document root, clear caches if necessary, and reload the Administration Control Panel.
Users receive no email SMTP settings, DNS, provider policy or server mail configuration. Verify phpBB’s email configuration, test delivery to a monitored mailbox and inspect mail and PHP logs; do not disable security checks just to force delivery.

15. Final go-live checklist

  • The downloaded phpBB release and its PHP/database requirements match.
  • Operating-system updates are applied and SSH access uses a protected administrative account.
  • The board has a dedicated database and least-privilege application credentials.
  • PHP modules, the database driver and getimagesize() pass the requirements screen.
  • The complete archive is in the intended document root and the hostname resolves correctly.
  • HTTPS works, HTTP redirects appropriately, and the firewall exposes only required services.
  • The installer directory is deleted and sensitive directories return a denial.
  • Ownership and permissions are restrictive, with write access limited to required runtime and upload paths.
  • A test account can register, log in, post and upload; permissions and administrator-only areas behave as intended.
  • Database and file backups run, are stored separately, and have been restored in a test procedure.
  • Anti-spam controls, updates, log monitoring and disk-space checks are scheduled as routine administration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install phpBB 3.3.x on PHP 8.4?

The documented phpBB 3.3.x range ends at PHP 8.3. Use a PHP version within that range or choose a phpBB release whose requirements explicitly include your PHP version; do not rely on the installer to make an unsupported combination safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is nginx supported, or must I use Apache?

nginx is viable, but you must configure PHP-FPM, URL handling and deny rules yourself because nginx does not read Apache .htaccess files. Apache is the simpler path when you want to use phpBB’s supplied Apache protections.

What should I preserve when moving or restoring a board?

Preserve the database, config.php, uploaded files and images, installed extensions and customized styles. Restore the database and matching files together, then verify permissions and run the release’s documented migration if required.
