The first launch takes longer than normal because OpenMod downloads its core components. Treat release and Unturned-build compatibility as a separate check: the release listing currently shows OpenMod 3.8.5 with a netstandard2.1 target, but that metadata does not guarantee compatibility with every Unturned update.

What you need before installing
OpenMod is a .NET plugin framework with an official implementation for Unturned. It adds its own module loader, command system and plugin directory; it does not replace the Unturned server executable.
- Server access: You need access to the Unturned installation files and permission to write to that directory. A game-server control panel must provide a file manager, SFTP or an equivalent upload method.
- A stopped server: Shut the server down cleanly before changing modules or plugins. Copying files while the process is running can leave incomplete files or locked assemblies.
- A backup: Save the complete server directory, including world data,
Modules, existing plugin folders and configuration files. Keep the backup outside the live installation so a rollback does not overwrite your only copy. - A compatibility check: Read the current OpenMod release notes and download assets, then check that the Unturned module and its Unturned redistributable/API files match the server build you intend to run.
- A maintenance window: The first OpenMod start may take longer while core components are downloaded. Do not terminate the process merely because it does not reach the normal startup time.
The official installation guide uses a version placeholder in the archive name. Your downloaded file will follow the pattern OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip; use the actual version shown in the current release assets rather than copying that placeholder literally.

Choose an installation route
There are two supported workflows. A manual module installation gives you direct control over the release archive and is the clearest route for a new server or a host where you can upload files. The RocketMod-assisted route is convenient when RocketMod is already installed and you want the installer to place OpenMod for you.

Route 1: install the OpenMod module manually
This is the normal installation sequence when you have direct access to the Unturned files.
- Stop Unturned and make the backup. Use your host panel’s stop action or the service method used by your administrator. Confirm that the server process has exited before editing files.
- Download the current module archive. From the official OpenMod release source, obtain the latest
OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip. Read the release notes and inspect the listed assets first; do not assume that the newest file supports every Unturned server build. - Extract the archive on your computer or in a temporary server directory. The extraction should produce a folder named
OpenMod.Unturned. Do not rename it, flatten it, or copy only individual DLL files. - Copy the complete folder into the Unturned installation’s
Modulesdirectory. The resulting layout must preserve the module folder and its internal hierarchy:

└── ...- Check the path before starting. A common mistake is creating
Modules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned/by copying the outer extraction directory instead of its contents. Another is placing the folder besideModulesor inside a similarly named directory. - Start the server. The first start can take substantially longer because OpenMod downloads its core components. Leave the process running and watch the server console for module-loading messages.
- Confirm OpenMod loaded before adding plugins. If the console reports a module or dependency error, stop and correct that installation first. Installing plugins on a framework that has not loaded makes later errors harder to interpret.
Do not delete the original ZIP until the server has started successfully and you have a backup of the working configuration. Keeping the archive with your deployment notes makes a controlled rollback easier.
Route 2: install through the RocketMod installer plugin
Use this route only when RocketMod is already installed separately. It is not a way to install RocketMod and OpenMod together from an empty server.
- Stop the server and back up the installation. Include the existing
Rocketdirectory and its configuration so you can restore the pre-install state. - Download the OpenMod Installer Plugin from the current official source recommended by the Unturned/OpenMod documentation.
- Upload the installer plugin to
/Rocket/Plugins. Keep the plugin file in that directory; do not put it inopenmod/plugins, which is used after OpenMod itself is running. - Restart the server. RocketMod should discover the installer plugin during startup.
- Run the installer command from the server console:
/openmod install. - Watch the console until installation completes, then restart if the installer requests it. Verify that the OpenMod module loads before installing any OpenMod plugins.
The installer repository documents optional migration flags. Treat those flags as an explicit migration operation, not as a required part of a first installation: read the flag descriptions, back up first and confirm which permissions, economy data or plugin settings you intend to move.

Because the installer repository is archived, check the current official OpenMod release source and documentation before deploying this method on a production server. If the installer version is stale for your Unturned build, use the manual module route instead.

A successful first launch has two separate outcomes: Unturned starts normally, and the OpenMod module is discovered and initialized. Check both in the server console.
- Look for OpenMod module-loading and initialization messages rather than relying only on the server becoming reachable.
- Confirm that the process continues past component downloads without a missing-file, assembly-load or target-framework error.
- Only after the module is initialized should you test OpenMod commands or install plugins.
- If your host panel truncates console output, open the full server log and search for the OpenMod module name and the first reported exception.
There is no universal installation-time estimate published for OpenMod. Download speed, disk performance, host load and the number of components being fetched all affect the first start, so use the console’s completion messages as the readiness signal.
Install OpenMod plugins
Once the framework is running, you can install a plugin from NuGet through the server console or place a plugin assembly in the OpenMod plugin directory yourself. Both methods require a reload after a plugin is installed, updated or removed.
NuGet installation from the server console
The automated command resolves a package by its NuGet package ID:

openmod install <package id>To pin a particular release, append the version to the package ID:
openmod install <package id>@<version>For a prerelease package, enable prerelease resolution with -Pre:
openmod install <package id> -PreReplace the angle-bracket values with the actual package ID and, when needed, the exact version. Pinning is useful for production servers because an update can then be tested deliberately instead of changing the plugin version during a routine install.
Manual DLL installation
- Stop the server or follow your host’s documented safe file-update procedure.
- Obtain the plugin DLL and every library explicitly required by that plugin from its release source.
- Copy the DLL and required libraries into
openmod/plugins. Preserve any subfolder structure specified by the plugin author. - Start the server or reload OpenMod, then read the console for dependency and initialization errors.
Manual installation gives you precise control over the files, but you are responsible for supplying dependencies and removing obsolete assemblies. Do not copy a DLL into Modules; that directory is for framework modules, not ordinary OpenMod plugins.
Reload after every plugin change
Run the following command after installing, updating or removing a plugin:

openmod reloadOpenMod’s plugin documentation explicitly requires this reload for changes to apply. If a plugin still does not appear, inspect the console output from the reload for a package, dependency, target-framework or configuration error rather than repeatedly restarting without changing the underlying files.

Run OpenMod alongside RocketMod
OpenMod supports side-by-side installation with RocketMod. You do not have to remove RocketMod before installing OpenMod, and the two frameworks can remain available while you migrate plugins or permissions gradually.

RocketMod is still a separate prerequisite for RocketMod features. Installing OpenMod does not install RocketMod, RocketMod plugins or RocketMod’s data stores.
OpenMod’s integration configuration lets you choose which framework supplies permissions and which supplies economy functionality. For each system, the documented choices are RocketMod, OpenMod or a separate system:
- Permissions: select the provider that should answer permission checks for your OpenMod and RocketMod components.
- Economy: select RocketMod/Uconomy, OpenMod or a separate economy system according to the plugins you operate.
Make one provider authoritative for each function unless a plugin specifically documents a multi-provider design. Changing a provider can alter which groups, balances or commands are visible, so back up the relevant data and test with an administrator account before applying the change to players.
Check release and Unturned compatibility
The OpenMod releases page currently surfaces version 3.8.5, shown as released on 22 May in the release listing, and identifies a netstandard2.1 target. Those are release metadata, not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Before production deployment:
- Open the current OpenMod release entry and read its release notes.
- Inspect the downloadable assets, including the Unturned module and any Unturned redist/API files supplied for that release.
- Compare those files with the exact Unturned server build installed on your host.
- Test the combination on a copy of the server, then watch the console through startup, module initialization and a plugin reload.
- Record the OpenMod version, Unturned build and plugin versions in your deployment notes so a later update can be compared against a known-good state.
No authoritative matrix covers every OpenMod release, Unturned update and plugin combination. When the release notes do not explicitly confirm your build, treat the pairing as unverified and use the server console and a test instance to establish whether it works before inviting players.
Update or roll back safely
Updating OpenMod
- Stop the server and create a fresh backup of the complete installation, including OpenMod configuration and plugin data.
- Read the target release notes and verify its Unturned assets against your server build.
- Extract the new archive separately so you can inspect the folder name and hierarchy.
- Replace the existing
Modules/OpenMod.Unturnedfolder with the new complete folder. Do not mix DLLs from different OpenMod releases. - Start the server without changing plugins at the same time. Confirm module initialization, then run
openmod reloadonly if you changed plugin files. - Test critical commands, permissions and economy operations before opening the server to players.
Rolling back
If the new module fails, stop the server, restore the backed-up OpenMod.Unturned folder and revert any configuration or plugin changes made during the update. Start again and confirm that the previous module loads. Keep a note of the failing release and the first console exception; that information is more useful than deleting logs and retrying the same files.
Troubleshooting common failures
The console never shows OpenMod loading
- Confirm the path is exactly
Modules/OpenMod.Unturnedunder the Unturned installation root. - Make sure you copied the complete folder, not only one DLL and not a nested duplicate folder.
- Check that the server was fully stopped while files were copied and that the account running it can read the module files.
- Re-extract the official archive and compare its contents with the files on the server.
Startup reports a missing assembly or incompatible target
Stop the server and compare the OpenMod release assets, Unturned redist/API files and your installed Unturned build. Do not solve an assembly error by downloading random DLLs from unrelated sources; use the files supplied for the matching release or select a release that supports the server build.

OpenMod downloads core components on its first start, so this launch is not directly comparable with later boots. Check the full console and server log for progress or an exception. If the process has an explicit network, permission or file error, correct that error; if it is still producing download activity, allow it to finish rather than killing the process repeatedly.
A plugin does not appear after installation
- Confirm the framework itself loaded before troubleshooting the plugin.
- For a NuGet install, verify the package ID and requested version. For a manual install, verify that the DLL and all required libraries are in
openmod/plugins. - Run
openmod reload; installing a file without reloading does not apply the change. - Read the reload output for a missing dependency, incompatible target or plugin configuration error.
openmod commands are unknown
This normally indicates that OpenMod has not initialized in the current server process, or that the command was entered in a console that is not connected to the Unturned server. Resolve module loading first, then issue the command in the server console rather than a separate operating-system shell.
RocketMod and OpenMod behave inconsistently
Verify that RocketMod was installed independently and that both frameworks are loading without errors. Review the integration choices for permissions and economy so they point to the providers your plugins actually use. If you performed a migration, compare the backed-up data with the migrated data and test one account at a time.
