How to Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute and Stream to YouTube

You can install OBS Studio on an Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute instance and send its output to YouTube Live, but the VPS needs more than OBS installed: it also needs a supported OBS/Ubuntu combination, working graphics and a graphical desktop session. Vultr’s documented workflow uses a remote desktop to configure OBS, then connects it to YouTube with a stream key. The steps below distinguish that provider tutorial from guarantees about package freshness or streaming performance.

Check the Ubuntu and OBS versions before installing

OBS installation depends on the Ubuntu release and package source. Vultr’s guide, updated April 1, 2025, installs OBS from Ubuntu’s default repositories; that can be a convenient route, but the package version varies by release and is not necessarily the newest OBS build. Check which version your chosen Ubuntu release provides before relying on it.

The OBS Project’s download page currently presents its Ubuntu PPA instructions for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. The corresponding commands are:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt install obs-studio

There is an important compatibility caveat: in an announcement dated June 19, 2026, the OBS Project said the planned future OBS Studio 33 release would drop Ubuntu 24.04 support. The announcement recommends Ubuntu 26.04 or later for Ubuntu 24.04 users who want future major and minor updates, or switching to Flatpak. It describes OBS 33 as a future release; check the current OBS release and compatibility information before choosing a system. Do not treat the older Linux installation page’s Ubuntu 18.04-or-newer wording as proof that an older Ubuntu release supports current OBS versions. OBS download page · OBS Project announcement

Provision a Vultr instance with a desktop and graphics support

Vultr’s April 2025 guide gives a tutorial baseline of 2 virtual CPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB bandwidth. It suggests 720p (1280 × 720) with 2 or more vCPUs and warns that higher resolutions and frame rates need more processing power. These are the guide’s recommendations, not an independently tested guarantee that every scene or encoder setting will work.

OBS’s Linux requirements specify an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. OBS also cautions that meeting the basic requirements does not ensure streaming or recording performance: CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A cloud server may install OBS successfully but still lack usable graphics or a desktop session.

  • Choose an Ubuntu release compatible with the OBS package source you intend to use.
  • Use SSH with a non-root user that has sudo access, as in Vultr’s workflow.
  • Provide a graphical desktop session and remote desktop access. Vultr’s guide describes connecting with software such as VNC Viewer or NoMachine.
  • Check that the VM image and instance expose working OpenGL support; do not assume a command-line-only server is ready for OBS’s desktop setup.
  • Allow for your actual encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity rather than treating the tutorial baseline as a performance guarantee.

OBS’s Linux requirements page is dated 2021. No specific Vultr configuration has been established here as a tested or best-performing instance. OBS system requirements

Install OBS and open its graphical interface

  1. Connect to the instance. SSH in as your non-root sudo user and update the system with the commands for the installation route you chose above.
  2. Install OBS. Run either Vultr’s documented apt command or the OBS PPA commands, not both by default. Check the installed version and package source if you need a particular OBS release.
  3. Connect to the desktop. Use the remote desktop setup configured for the VM. Launch OBS in that graphical session. If OBS will not open, first verify that the desktop/display session and OpenGL support are working; installing the package alone does not provide them.
  4. Complete OBS’s setup wizard. Follow its configuration prompts for the canvas/output resolution and frame rate. Choose settings the instance can encode reliably, and check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the corresponding bitrate rather than guessing one.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the broadcast and locate its stream key.
  2. Copy the key privately. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast. Do not publish it in a screenshot, terminal transcript or public configuration. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube/YouTube Gaming as the service, and enter the stream key. Follow OBS’s configuration wizard if it has not already run.
  4. Set the encoder output. Specify resolution, frame rate and bitrate in OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Use YouTube’s encoder table to select a bitrate appropriate to your exact resolution and frame rate; the values are not reproduced here because the table’s complete entries are not established here.
  5. Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS, then check YouTube Studio’s live control room for the incoming feed and stream status. Confirm the video and audio are correct before sharing the live link.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to configure the encoder correctly or ensure the VPS can keep up. YouTube live encoder settings

Keep YouTube and OBS requirements in mind

  • Copyright: You are responsible for having the rights to the video, music and other material in your stream. A successful connection is not permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content.
  • YouTube policies: Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel policies. Whether a particular reused-video format is acceptable depends on the content and applicable YouTube rules; OBS does not make content compliant.
  • Stream key safety: Keep the key private and rotate it if exposed.
  • Compatibility: Re-check Ubuntu and OBS support when changing either version, especially around the planned OBS 33 support change for Ubuntu 24.04.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS installs, but will not launch or show a usable window No working graphical desktop/display session, or graphics support is unavailable. Open the configured remote desktop session, verify X or Wayland is running and check that the VM exposes compatible OpenGL graphics.
The apt install command cannot find OBS or offers an unexpected version Repository availability and package versions differ by Ubuntu release and source. Confirm the Ubuntu release and configured repositories. Check the package source/version; use the OBS PPA only when its current instructions support your release.
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect service selection or stream key, or a stream not started from OBS. Recheck the YouTube/YouTube Gaming service setting and key in OBS and verify the broadcast status in YouTube Studio. Replace a key that may have been exposed.
The picture stutters or OBS struggles to encode The chosen encoder settings or scene exceed available CPU/graphics capacity. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and select YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance. Vultr’s 720p suggestion is a tutorial baseline, not a universal performance promise.
OBS 33 installation or update fails on Ubuntu 24.04 The OBS Project announced that the planned OBS 33 release would no longer support Ubuntu 24.04. Check whether OBS 33 has been released and consult the current OBS compatibility guidance; the announcement points users seeking future updates toward Ubuntu 26.04 or later, or Flatpak.

Cost and operating trade-offs

A Vultr VPS is a hosted computer that you configure and maintain for OBS. The tutorial’s stated CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth figures do not establish the price of a particular Vultr instance, nor do they guarantee adequate encoding performance. Check the current instance price and available graphics support for your chosen region and plan before deploying.

This approach suits creators who want a configurable desktop OBS workflow on a remote machine and are prepared to manage the Ubuntu release, desktop, graphics and encoder settings. A cloud VM still requires that the machine and OBS session remain operational for the stream to continue.
