There is no documented, supported way to install and run Nintendo 3DS software on a standard R36S running ArkOS. The R36S compatibility table lists Nintendo DS, not Nintendo 3DS. PortMaster installs Linux game ports, not commercial 3DS titles, and its own documentation warns that a package may not run on every handheld. Treat any claimed 3DS emulator or “3DS port installer” for the ordinary R36S as experimental and unverified.
You can still use a careful, reversible workflow to install documented PortMaster games and other systems the R36S officially supports. That process protects your card and gives you a safe way to test software without confusing a Linux port with a Nintendo 3DS emulator.

Can the R36S run Nintendo 3DS games?
Not as a documented, normal feature. PortMaster’s supported-handheld entry identifies the R36S as a 480×320 device using an RK3326 processor and ArkOS. The R36S manual’s system list includes Nintendo DS but does not list Nintendo 3DS. Those are separate platforms: a Nintendo DS listing does not imply that 3DS software, which was designed for different hardware and a dual-screen interface, is supported.
The practical result is important: there is no authoritative installation recipe that turns the ordinary R36S into a verified Nintendo 3DS system. You should not expect to copy a 3DS ROM into a folder and have ArkOS launch it, and you should not assume that a PortMaster package is an emulator for Nintendo hardware. A community build may exist somewhere, but without a maintained package, clear device compatibility, and documented requirements, it is an experiment rather than a safe procedure.

What the available documentation actually establishes
- The R36S is documented by PortMaster as an ArkOS handheld with RK3326 hardware and a 480×320 display.
- The R36S manual names Nintendo DS among compatible systems, but not Nintendo 3DS.
- PortMaster is a graphical tool for downloading and installing Linux handheld game ports.
- PortMaster’s FAQ says that not every port runs on every supported handheld.
- ArkOS stores ROMs and BIOS files on an EASYROMS partition and warns against deleting existing folders or contents.
None of those statements proves that a particular unofficial emulator is impossible. They do establish that 3DS support is not a normal, documented R36S capability. That distinction prevents a failed experiment from being mistaken for a supported installation.
Why a PortMaster package is not a Nintendo 3DS port
PortMaster distributes Linux versions of games that have been adapted for compatible handhelds. A package normally contains a launcher and supporting files; many packages still require game data obtained from the original game or another legal source. PortMaster does not convert a Nintendo 3DS cartridge or installation into a Linux port, and installing PortMaster does not add a general-purpose 3DS emulator.
When a listing says that a game is available through PortMaster, check what “available” means. It may be a native Linux build, a wrapper around an open-source engine, or a launcher that expects you to supply data files. The package information should identify the required files and the supported devices. If it does not explicitly identify the R36S and your ArkOS build, do not treat it as compatible.
How to classify an offer before you touch the card
| Claim or package | What it could be | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| “PortMaster game” | A Linux handheld port or launcher | Install only when the package lists your device and its data requirements. |
| “Nintendo 3DS ROM” | Commercial software for Nintendo’s 3DS system | It is not automatically usable on ArkOS and may require an emulator that is not documented for the R36S. |
| “3DS emulator for R36S” | An unofficial, experimental build or an inaccurate claim | Do not overwrite your working card; demand device-specific documentation before testing. |
| “DS emulator” | Software for Nintendo DS | Consistent with the R36S manual’s listed systems, but still subject to the emulator and game’s own limits. |
Prepare the R36S before installing anything
The safest installation is reversible. A failed package should cost you a folder or a save file, not the entire boot card. Perform these steps before adding a PortMaster game or investigating an unofficial experiment.
1. Confirm the exact handheld and firmware
Check that the device is the R36S-class handheld described in the PortMaster entry, rather than a visually similar clone or a different RK3326 model. Open the ArkOS system information screen and record the installed build. Menu names and card layouts can differ between firmware releases, and a package that works on one build may fail on another.

Do not rely only on the case, splash screen, or a seller’s listing. If the device uses a different operating system, a different processor, or a modified folder layout, follow that system’s documentation instead of copying an ArkOS procedure.
2. Make a complete backup
- Shut the R36S down from ArkOS. Do not remove the card while the handheld is writing saves or configuration files.
- Remove the microSD card and connect it to a computer with a reliable USB microSD reader.
- Create a full card image when possible. A file-level copy of every visible partition is useful, but an image gives you the most complete rollback if the card will not boot.
- Verify that the backup opens and that the BIOS folder is present. The R36S manual specifically advises backing up the original card, especially the BIOS folder.
- Label the original card and keep it untouched while testing. If an experiment fails, you can restore the backup or reinstall the known-good card instead of guessing which files were changed.
A backup is not optional when testing unsupported software. Save files, emulator settings, and hidden configuration files can be lost even when the handheld still starts normally.

3. Use dependable storage
The manual recommends replacing supplied cards with branded Kingston or Samsung cards. Supplied cards are often the first part to fail, and corruption can look like an emulator or PortMaster problem. Use a card with enough capacity for your existing ROMs and a reader that can reliably write to it. Keep the original card as a rollback copy rather than using it as your test media.
4. Preserve the EASYROMS structure
ArkOS uses an EASYROMS partition for ROMs and BIOS files. Open the existing folders and add files to the matching location; do not rename, empty, or “clean up” folders that you did not create. ArkOS warns that emulator dependencies may be stored in those existing directories. Deleting a seemingly unused folder can break several systems at once.
If your installation uses a second card, identify which card contains EASYROMS before copying anything. Keep a note of the original path so that a rollback does not place files on the wrong volume.

Install PortMaster only for supported ports
On a supported ArkOS build, the normal interface path is Options > Tools > PortMaster. The tool presents packages intended for Linux handhelds. It does not provide a Nintendo 3DS catalog, and a PortMaster menu entry should not be interpreted as proof that every package works on the R36S.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If PortMaster is missing from the menu
ArkOS documentation describes placing the PortMaster folder under /roms/tools, or under the corresponding tools path on a second-card setup where applicable. Use the folder location and package supplied by the ArkOS or PortMaster documentation for your exact build. Do not download a random archive that merely uses the same folder name, and do not replace the entire tools directory when only the PortMaster folder is required.
After copying the folder, eject the card safely, return it to the R36S, boot ArkOS, and look again under Options > Tools. If the entry still does not appear, stop and confirm the firmware version and path rather than repeatedly copying files.
Install one documented package at a time
- Open Options > Tools > PortMaster.
- Read the package information before selecting an install action. Confirm that the R36S or your exact ArkOS target is listed.
- Note whether the package is a complete open-source game, a launcher, or a port that requires original game data.
- Install the package to the standard ports location,
/roms/ports, using PortMaster’s own install action. - Supply only the legally obtained data files the package requests, following its documented filenames and folders. Do not copy a Nintendo 3DS ROM into the ports directory.
- Exit PortMaster, return to the ArkOS game list, and launch the new entry once before adding another package.
PortMaster’s compatibility warning matters here: a package can install successfully and still fail to launch, display incorrectly, or behave differently on the R36S. Installation is not a compatibility test.
How to test a new port without risking the system
Keep the first test simple
Start the port with the handheld connected to stable power and without changing unrelated emulator settings. Give it time to create its own save and configuration folders. If the package has a first-run setup screen, record the choices you make so you can reproduce or undo them.

Do not copy a large batch of packages and then troubleshoot. One new folder makes it possible to identify the change that caused a failure. Keep a short note of the package name, version shown by PortMaster, date installed, and any data files supplied.
Recognize a failed test
- The entry returns immediately to the game list.
- The screen stays black or shows a corrupted image while the rest of ArkOS remains responsive.
- The handheld reboots, freezes, or stops responding to controls.
- The game launches but reports missing data, missing libraries, or an unsupported architecture.
- Other systems stop launching after files were copied into shared folders.
A single failed launch does not prove that the entire R36S is damaged. It does mean you should stop adding files and return to the last known-good state before trying another variation.
Remove only what you added
- Power down normally if ArkOS is responsive. If it is frozen, wait for the card activity light to stop before removing power.
- Use your computer to open the backup and the test card side by side.
- Remove only the newly installed port folder and its launcher, following the package’s documented uninstall location.
- Restore any file that you changed in a shared folder, rather than deleting the whole folder.
- Boot the R36S and test an existing game. If unrelated systems still fail, restore the complete card image or replace the test card with the untouched original.
Keep saves and configuration in the port’s own folder whenever the package allows it. Do not overwrite the backup while troubleshooting; it is your clean recovery point.

Do not present an unverified community build as a safe R36S installation. A credible 3DS solution would need to identify the emulator or port, support the exact RK3326 and ArkOS combination, explain how the 3DS dual-screen output and controls are handled, state its legal game-data requirements, and provide a recovery path. The standard R36S and ArkOS documentation reviewed here does not provide those details.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Is the project maintained, with a version and release notes rather than an anonymous download?
- Does it name the R36S and your ArkOS build, not merely “Linux” or “RK3326” in general?
- Does it explain whether it is an emulator, a native port, or a launcher?
- Does it state which legally obtained game files are required and where they belong?
- Can you remove it without replacing the operating system or formatting EASYROMS?
- Does it offer a documented fix or rollback when the handheld fails to boot?
If any answer is missing, keep it off your everyday card. A forum post, video description, or download page can be useful for discovering an experiment, but it is not the same as verified device support.
Safer alternatives when you want more games on the R36S
| Option | Software type | Evidence level for the ordinary R36S | Risk and preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documented PortMaster package | Linux handheld port or launcher | Best fit when the package lists the R36S and ArkOS | Back up first; supply only the required legal data; install one package at a time. |
| System listed in the R36S manual | Emulator-supported platform, such as Nintendo DS | Consistent with the manual’s compatibility table | Use the correct ROM and BIOS locations; performance and controls still vary by title. |
| Unofficial 3DS emulator experiment | Emulator or compatibility layer | Not documented by the standard R36S/ArkOS material | Use a spare card and a complete image backup; expect failure and do not call it supported. |
| Random “3DS port” archive | Unknown | Not established | Do not install. Unknown archives can contain the wrong files, misleading launchers, or changes that are difficult to undo. |
The safest way to expand the library is to stay inside the documented systems and PortMaster packages that identify your handheld. That approach also makes troubleshooting possible because the folder layout, data requirements, and removal steps are known.
Common problems and recovery paths
PortMaster opens, but a package is not listed
Refresh the catalog using the tool’s normal update function and check that the device has network access if the package requires an online download. If the package still does not appear, it may not target your handheld or may have been removed. Do not install a similarly named archive from an unrelated source.

Confirm the package’s required data files, spelling, case, and folder location. Then verify that the package lists the R36S and your ArkOS build. A successful download does not override PortMaster’s warning that not every port runs on every handheld. Remove the new folder and retest the card before changing emulator settings globally.
The game reports missing BIOS or shared files
Check the existing BIOS and EASYROMS folders against your backup. Restore missing files from the clean copy, but do not replace the entire BIOS folder with files from an unknown archive. If several systems report missing files after one change, restore the affected folders from the backup rather than creating new directories at random.
The R36S no longer boots
Power it down, remove the card, and compare it with your backup. If you created a full image, write that image to a known-good card and test it before adding anything. If you only made a file backup, restore the original card structure and boot files exactly as they were. Keep the failed card untouched until you know which files caused the problem; it can help identify what changed.
A clone behaves differently from the documented R36S
Stop using the R36S-specific files. Similar shells can contain different displays, card layouts, or firmware. Identify the model and operating system from the device documentation and use that platform’s instructions. Forcing an ArkOS package onto a clone can damage the installation even when the menus look familiar.

- Identify: Is this a genuine R36S-class device with the ArkOS build named by the package?
- Classify: Is the download a documented Linux port, an emulator, or an unknown archive?
- Check data: Does it state exactly which legally obtained files are required?
- Protect: Do you have a verified card image and a preserved BIOS backup?
- Limit the change: Can you install and remove one folder without touching shared ArkOS files?
- Test: Have you recorded the package version and tested it alone?
- Recover: Do you know how to restore the clean card if the handheld freezes or stops booting?
For a standard R36S, this checklist leads to a clear choice: install documented PortMaster ports and listed systems using a backed-up card; do not advertise or rely on a Nintendo 3DS installation method that the device documentation does not support.
