Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The most common mistake is treating a Workshop ID and a Mod ID as interchangeable. They identify different things: one tells the server what content to obtain, and the other tells the game what to enable.

Choose the right way to run modded Project Zomboid
Your installation steps depend on how the game is hosted. Project Zomboid offers three practical arrangements, and only a dedicated server uses the server-profile method described in the main procedure.
| Route | How mods are configured | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game host or listen server | The host enables subscribed content through the in-game Mod Manager and hosts from that game session. | Fastest setup for a small group because it uses the game interface. | The host machine must remain running while others play. |
| Dedicated server | Mods are declared in the server profile under Zomboid/Server/, using separate WorkshopItems= and Mods= entries. |
The world can persist independently of a player’s game client. | You must administer profile files, restarts, compatibility, and backups. |
| Managed hosting | A provider’s control panel or support team handles some combination of installation, updates, backups, and restarts. | Less server administration for owners who do not want to edit files. | Control-panel features, supported Project Zomboid builds, backup policy, mod tools, and pricing vary by provider. |
Changing a client’s Mod Manager list does not replace the WorkshopItems and Mods settings of a dedicated server. If players connect to a separately administered server, configure that server’s profile even if the same players also use local mods in ordinary play.

What you need before editing the server
- Access to stop and start the dedicated server.
- Access to the profile file that the server actually launches.
- The current Project Zomboid build used by the server and every player.
- The Steam Workshop page for every mod, including its numeric item ID.
- The exact internal Mod ID for every item, taken from the mod information or its
mod.infometadata. - A backup of the active
Zomboidfolder, especially before changing an established world.
Do not begin by editing a random INI file or copying only the number from a Workshop URL. A correct installation requires the active profile, compatible content, both identifiers, and a restart.
Step 1: stop the server and find the active profile
Stop the server cleanly before changing its configuration. Identify the server name or profile name used by the launch command, service, panel, or shortcut. Dedicated-server profiles are stored under Zomboid/Server/; the file normally follows the pattern <profile>.ini.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop the running server and wait for its process to exit.
- Open the
Zomboid/Server/directory used by that installation. - Find the INI file matching the profile name you actually launch.
- Open that file in a plain-text editor and keep a copy of the original before making changes.
Editing another profile is a frequent reason a change appears to do nothing. A server can start successfully while reading a different profile from the one you modified, so confirm the name first rather than changing several files at once.
Step 2: select compatible Workshop content
Check every Workshop item’s description and metadata for support for the server’s current Project Zomboid build. The server and all connecting clients should run the same build. A client/server build mismatch, or stale Workshop content, can prevent a connection even when the INI syntax is correct.
Check compatibility as a set
Evaluate the complete mod set, not just each item in isolation. A map may require a framework or other dependency; a gameplay mod may specify a load order; and an update can make an older item incompatible with the current build. Follow the author’s stated dependencies and ordering instructions exactly.
Separate downloads from activation
Subscribing to an item on a player’s computer does not by itself configure a dedicated server. The server must be told which Workshop items to obtain, and the game must separately be told which internal IDs to activate. Record both values for every selected item before editing the file.

Step 3: copy the Workshop ID and Mod ID
Each mod has two identifiers that serve different purposes.
| Identifier | What it identifies | Where to get it | INI destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workshop ID | The Steam Workshop item the server should download or refresh. | The numeric item ID in the item’s Steam Workshop URL. | WorkshopItems= |
| Mod ID | The internal package the game should enable after the content is present. | The mod information supplied by the author, commonly the mod.info file. |
Mods= |
Record the numeric Workshop ID
Open the Workshop page for the item and copy the number in its URL. Use the number itself, not the title, author name, or a collection ID. A collection can contain several items, each of which needs its own Workshop ID unless the server’s documentation explicitly provides another supported method.
Record the exact internal Mod ID
Find the mod’s internal identifier in the author’s information or mod.info. Preserve spelling, punctuation, and case exactly. The display name shown in the Workshop page is not necessarily the internal ID; entering the display name can leave the item downloaded but inactive.
Make a working inventory
For a multi-mod server, create a small inventory before editing the profile. A useful record has four columns: display name, numeric Workshop ID, internal Mod ID, and dependency or load-order notes. This prevents a long comma-separated line from becoming the only place where you can check a spelling mistake.
Step 4: edit WorkshopItems and Mods
Open the active server INI and locate the two settings. Put Workshop IDs in WorkshopItems= and internal IDs in Mods=. Keep the file’s existing list syntax; do not swap the values between fields.
WorkshopItems=123456789,987654321
Mods=ExampleMod,ExampleMap
The numbers above are only a format example, not real items. Replace them with the IDs you recorded. If the file already contains entries, append the new values using the same separator and spacing convention rather than creating duplicate keys. Keep any load order required by the mod author, particularly for maps and dependencies.

Why both lines are required
WorkshopItems= answers “what should the server obtain from Steam Workshop?” Mods= answers “what should the game activate?” Supplying only a Workshop ID can result in a downloaded but disabled mod. Supplying only an internal ID can produce a missing-mod or unavailable-content error because the server was never instructed to obtain the files.
Keep identifiers exact
- Use the numeric Workshop item ID, not the Workshop page title.
- Use the internal Mod ID, not a shortened or translated display name.
- Match spelling and case from the metadata.
- Keep map and dependency entries in the order specified by their author.
- Do not remove unrelated server settings while changing these two lines.
Step 5: handle dependencies and load order
Read each mod author’s dependency and load-order instructions before starting the server. If a map depends on a library or another map, add the related items together and place their internal IDs in the required order. A server can have valid-looking syntax and still fail to start or connect correctly when a required dependency is absent or ordered incorrectly.

Test risky changes safely
For a new map, a dependency chain, or a large mod set, test in a disposable world or a backed-up copy first. This isolates configuration errors from changes to an established save. Only move the tested arrangement to a live world after the server starts and a client can connect.
Step 6: save, restart, and read the first failure
- Save the edited INI file in plain text.
- Confirm that the file name and profile are unchanged.
- Start the dedicated server again.
- Allow it to download or refresh the listed Workshop content.
- Watch the console or log during startup.
If startup fails, read the first fatal console or log line and address that specific error. Changing unrelated settings at the same time makes it harder to identify whether the problem is an invalid ID, a missing dependency, an ordering issue, or a build mismatch.
A restart is required after changing the mod lists. The server reads the profile when it starts; leaving the old process running will not apply the new entries.
Step 7: verify from a client
After the server starts, connect with a test client before inviting the whole group. The client and server must use the same Project Zomboid build and receive the same mod set in the same order.

- Confirm the client is running the server’s build.
- Compare the intended Workshop items with the server’s downloaded set.
- Compare internal Mod IDs and their order on both sides.
- Join the server and check for missing-mod, rejected-connection, or desynchronization messages.
- Only after a successful test, have the rest of the players update to the identical arrangement.
Back up the Zomboid folder before adding or removing mods from an established save. Some additions do not affect an existing world retroactively, while other changes can make a world behave unexpectedly; the mod’s own documentation determines whether a fresh world is required.
How to diagnose common installation failures
The mod downloads but is not active
This usually means the Workshop ID is present but the internal ID is missing or wrong. Open the active profile and check that the exact Mod ID from the metadata appears in Mods=. Correct spelling and case, save, and restart. Do not solve this by adding the Workshop number to the Mods= line; the fields have different roles.
Players are rejected or desynchronize
Compare four things between the server and every client: the Project Zomboid build, Workshop IDs, internal Mod IDs, and order. A player can be subscribed to an item and still fail to connect if the server uses a different build or a different dependency order. Bring every client to the same build and mod arrangement before testing again.
Changes have no effect
Verify that you edited the profile under Zomboid/Server/ that the launch process actually uses. Then stop and restart the server. If the active profile name was wrong, the server will continue loading its original settings no matter how often another INI is edited.
A map or dependency fails
Return to the Workshop author’s dependency and load-order instructions. Add required related mods together, confirm every dependency has both identifiers, and test the arrangement in a backup or disposable world. A map entry without its required library, or an otherwise correct list in the wrong order, can prevent a usable session.
The existing save behaves oddly
Stop using the changed world if the mod’s documentation says a fresh world is required. Restore the pre-change copy or create a fresh world, then test the mod set there. Keep the original backup untouched until you know the new arrangement is stable.
Best Value
The server starts but a particular client still fails
Check that client’s build and local Workshop state rather than changing the server blindly. Have the player update or resubscribe to the exact items the server declares, then retry with the same order. If other clients connect successfully, a client-specific mismatch is more likely than an INI syntax problem.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Updating or removing a mod safely
Treat an update or removal as a configuration change, not just a file replacement. Stop the server, preserve a backup, and review the author’s notes for build, dependency, and save requirements. Update the corresponding Workshop and internal-ID lists together so the server does not obtain one set of files while attempting to activate another.
When removing an item, remove its Workshop ID and internal ID from the active profile, then restart and test with a copy of the world first. If another mod depends on it, removing only the apparent parent can leave the remaining set incomplete.
Dedicated server versus ordinary play
For ordinary single-player or host play, the in-game Mod Manager is the normal place to enable subscribed mods. A dedicated server has its own profile and does not inherit a player’s Mod Manager selections. This distinction explains why a mod can appear enabled on the host’s computer while remaining absent from the dedicated server, or why a player can be subscribed to content that the server never activates.
Use the in-game interface for the local game session and the server INI for the dedicated process. If both are used, keep their builds, mod sets, and order deliberately aligned rather than assuming one configuration controls the other.
Managed hosting: what to check before handing over administration
Managed hosting can reduce manual file editing, but the same technical requirements still apply. Before choosing a provider, confirm the control panel can set both Workshop items and internal Mod IDs, supports the Project Zomboid build your group uses, and lets you preserve or restore world backups.
- Build support: can the service run the server build required by your mod set?
- Mod workflow: can you enter both identifiers and control dependency order?
- Restart control: can you stop, start, and schedule restarts after changes?
- Backups: how often are worlds backed up, how long are copies retained, and can you restore one yourself?
- Diagnostics: can you view the console and logs needed to find the first fatal line?
- Pricing and limits: are storage, player slots, backups, or additional restarts charged separately?
A panel that offers only a Workshop search box may still require you to supply the internal Mod ID and order manually. Ask how it handles those fields before migrating an established world.
