First identify the video and audio codecs inside the file, then install the relevant Ubuntu packages or try a player that supports them. An MP4 or MKV extension describes a container, not the codecs inside it, so installing one “codec pack” will not fix every unsupported-format error.
Check which codecs the video uses
- In Files, right-click the video and select Properties.
- Open the Audio/Video or Video tab, depending on what appears, and note the listed audio and video codecs.
Ubuntu’s desktop help explains that different video formats require different codecs to play. The filename extension alone does not tell you which codec is missing. Ubuntu’s video troubleshooting guide describes how to inspect a file and troubleshoot playback.

Install Ubuntu’s common codec metapackage
On stock Ubuntu, the familiar aggregate package is ubuntu-restricted-extras. The Ubuntu Community Help wiki gives this command:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
The Ubuntu 24.04 LTS package archive lists ubuntu-restricted-extras in the multiverse component and describes it as a collection commonly used for media codecs and fonts; it recommends libavcodec-extra. The archive also listed the metapackage for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS when checked. Confirm that the needed repository component is enabled and that the package is available for your release before installing it. Ubuntu Packages: ubuntu-restricted-extras for 24.04 LTS

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
To install it, open Terminal, run the command, enter your password if prompted, and follow any package prompts. Then reopen the video player and try the file again. Package names and availability can vary by Ubuntu release and desktop flavor; the community page lists kubuntu-restricted-extras, xubuntu-restricted-extras, and lubuntu-restricted-extras for the corresponding flavors. Common media codecs and fonts for stock Ubuntu, through a release-specific package from the enabled repository. | Does not guarantee support for every codec, player, file, or commercial DVD. Check availability for your release and flavor. Ubuntu Packages |
| VLC | A practical alternative when the desktop player cannot play a format; Ubuntu help recommends trying it. | It will not repair a damaged file or guarantee playback of every file. Ubuntu desktop help |
| GStreamer plugin packages | Framework plugins for applications that use GStreamer. Ubuntu/Debian package names include gstreamer1.0-plugins-good, gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, and gstreamer1.0-libav. |
These are framework components, not a universal one-command fix. Identify the application and codec before adding packages. GStreamer: Installing on Linux |
| DVD-specific packages and guidance | DVD navigation, reading, and playback-related components. | Commercial DVD decryption is a separate legal and technical issue; the listed packages do not remove local legal restrictions. Ubuntu Community Help: Playing DVDs |
If the video still will not play
Try VLC before adding more packages
Install or open VLC and test the same file. Ubuntu help recommends VLC when the required codec cannot be found for the existing player, and also identifies conversion as another fallback. Ubuntu desktop help

Check for a file or player problem
If VLC also fails, more codecs may not be the answer. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance lists a damaged video, a problem with the player, or an incorrect encode as possible causes. Compare playback with another known-good video and, if practical, copy the problem file again from its source. These checks can help distinguish a file-specific failure from a broader playback issue, but they do not prove the cause on their own. Ubuntu desktop help
Use GStreamer packages only for a GStreamer-based application
If the affected application uses GStreamer, upstream documents Ubuntu/Debian packages for its plugin sets, including good, bad, ugly, and libav, along with base components and tools. Its documented installation command also includes development packages; it is a broad setup rather than a minimal remedy for every user. Check which application and codec are involved, then consult the application’s guidance and Ubuntu package availability. GStreamer Linux installation documentation

Commercial DVDs need separate handling
Ubuntu does not enable commercial DVD playback by default for legal and technical reasons. Its DVD guidance lists packages including libdvdnav4, libdvdread8, gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly, and libdvd-pkg. The decryption step can be restricted by local law, so check the rules that apply in your country before installing or using unlicensed decryption software. Follow the dedicated Ubuntu DVD playback guidance rather than treating a commercial DVD as an ordinary MP4 or MKV codec issue.
