OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) lists macOS Tahoe support in version 3.0.0-rc.2, a release candidate published October 4, 2026. It is experimental: OCLP warns of instability, system crashes and potential data loss. Whether it can work on your Mac depends on the exact model and its hardware, so check compatibility before starting and protect important files.
What Tahoe support in OCLP means right now
Tahoe support has arrived in an OCLP prerelease, not a stable release. The project’s 3.0.0-rc.2 release notes say to expect “issues resulting in instability, system crashes, and potential data loss.” Treat this as an experiment, not a routine upgrade, and do not rely on the Mac for critical work until you are comfortable with its behavior.

The project’s guidance has not fully caught up with the release candidate. OCLP’s FAQ still describes its supported macOS range as Big Sur through Sequoia, and its detailed installation documentation also stops at Sequoia. Those pages explain the general OCLP workflow, but they are not a verified Tahoe-specific walkthrough. Follow Tahoe instructions only if they are included with the current official prerelease materials; do not assume older screenshots or steps apply unchanged.

Find the exact model identifier
On the Mac you want to update, open Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > System Report, then look for Model Identifier in the Hardware overview. Compare that identifier with OCLP’s supported-model list. The list covers specified Intel Macs; Apple silicon and PowerPC Macs are excluded, and a model not listed is unsupported by the patcher.

Check hardware caveats and preparation
- OCLP’s model guidance specifies at least 3 GB of RAM for Sonoma and newer. It does not provide a Tahoe-specific model matrix or establish that this baseline guarantees a successful Tahoe installation.
- OCLP recommends installing the latest macOS version your Mac supports natively first when possible, to obtain the latest firmware.
- Being on the supported-model list does not promise full graphics acceleration or feature parity. OCLP’s FAQ notes that non-Metal graphics can limit newer applications and built-in features, and lists known GPU and model limitations.
- Protect important files before proceeding. The release candidate explicitly warns of potential data loss; that warning is not a prediction that every installation will lose data.
What the documented installer process covers
OCLP describes OpenCore as a boot loader that injects and patches data in memory. Its general getting-started sequence is to read the FAQ, verify the model, and then create installation media. The steps below reflect the published general workflow, not a Tahoe installation verified on a specific Mac.
- Get the current official OCLP prerelease. Use the project’s official release materials and review the 3.0.0-rc.2 warning before continuing. Confirm that the Tahoe support and any model-specific instructions still apply to the release you are using.
- Set the target model if preparing the installer elsewhere. If you are using a different Mac to make the installer, OCLP’s documentation recommends selecting the target Mac model in OCLP settings first so automatic root patching can be configured for that model.
- Choose Create macOS Installer. In OCLP, open Create macOS Installer, choose the option to download a macOS installer, and select the desired version. The general installer guide documents this flow, but does not document Tahoe-specific screens.
- Write the installer to a USB drive. OCLP recommends a 32 GB drive. The installer-creation process formats the entire selected USB drive, so use an empty drive or one whose contents you have saved elsewhere, and confirm that you selected the correct disk.
- Build and install OpenCore, then boot from it. The general OCLP guide separates building and installing OpenCore from booting OpenCore and macOS. For Tahoe, use only steps published with the current release candidate; the older guide does not establish Tahoe-specific button labels, firmware changes, boot arguments, or model workarounds.
After macOS installs: patches and Recovery
Some unsupported Macs may need OCLP post-install root patches. Check whether patches are available for your system and complete the process specified by the current OCLP materials. OCLP notes that patches may need to be run again once the Mac has internet access so required packages can be retrieved.

When to stop rather than proceed
- Your exact model identifier is absent from OCLP’s supported list.
- You need a stable, supported installation for essential work and cannot accept prerelease crashes or potential data loss.
- Your Mac has a graphics or other hardware limitation that would make the expected Tahoe features or applications unusable.
- The current release materials do not provide clear instructions for your model or the step you have reached. Do not fill those gaps by guessing at Sequoia-era instructions.
