How to install macOS Tahoe 26 on a different partition of your Mac

Yes. On a compatible Mac, you can keep your current macOS and install macOS Tahoe 26 on a second internal APFS volume. Apple’s modern method is not a traditional fixed-size partition: create an APFS volume, download the full Tahoe installer, choose Show All Disks, and target that new volume. Your existing installation remains available, but both systems still share the Mac’s hardware and, when installed internally, the same physical storage.

Apple’s current Tahoe release page lists macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 (published June 1, 2026); install the latest 26.x installer offered for your specific Mac rather than relying on an old minor-version installer. See Apple’s current macOS versions and Tahoe compatibility list.

Before you start

  • Confirm compatibility. Tahoe support is model-specific. Apple lists Apple-silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models introduced in 2020 or later, Mac mini from 2020, iMac from 2020, Mac Studio from 2022, Mac Pro from 2019, plus specified Intel models such as the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and 2020 four-port 13-inch MacBook Pro. Check the live list at Apple’s Tahoe compatibility page.
  • Back up first. Make and verify a current Time Machine or other complete backup before changing storage. Apple recommends backing up before installation (Apple’s upgrade guidance). A second APFS volume is not a backup and will not protect you from a failed internal SSD.
  • Check space. Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. Apple does not publish one universal free-space minimum for a second Tahoe installation. Allow room for the operating system, temporary files, updates, applications, caches, swap and your data; leave substantial headroom instead of filling the APFS container.
  • Connect the Mac to power, make sure you have an administrator password, and note the name of your existing startup volume (often Macintosh HD).
  • If the Mac is managed by an employer or school, firmware, FileVault or administrator policies may block this procedure. Ask the administrator rather than bypassing those controls.

Partition or APFS volume?

A traditional partition is a fixed region of a disk. An APFS volume is a logical volume inside an APFS container. For a second modern macOS installation, Apple documents Add APFS Volume. Volumes can share free space in the container, although they still compete for real capacity and can consume more than expected. The practical instruction is therefore: install Tahoe on a separate APFS volume—the modern equivalent of another partition. Apple’s procedure is documented at Install macOS on a separate volume.

Step 1: Create the Tahoe APFS volume

  1. Open Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility.
  2. In the sidebar, select the existing APFS startup volume, usually Macintosh HD. Do not select the whole physical disk, and do not click Erase.
  3. Choose Edit → Add APFS Volume, or click the add-volume button in the toolbar.
  4. Enter a distinctive name such as macOS Tahoe. Leave the format as APFS, then click Add.
  5. Quit Disk Utility after the volume appears and is mounted.

If Add APFS Volume is unavailable: use View → Show All Devices to inspect the sidebar hierarchy. You may have selected the physical disk, an APFS container, or a non-APFS volume. Select an existing APFS volume. Do not reformat the disk to make this option appear.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Step 2: Download the full Tahoe installer

  1. Open Apple’s How to download and install macOS page.
  2. Use Apple’s Tahoe 26 download method for your Mac. Do not use an unofficial mirror.
  3. Confirm that an application named similar to Install macOS Tahoe is in the Applications folder.
  4. If it opens automatically, quit the installer. Reopen it only after the new APFS volume exists.

Starting the installer without changing its destination can upgrade the current startup system, so the destination check in the next step is essential.

Step 3: Install Tahoe on the new volume

  1. Open Applications → Install macOS Tahoe and click through the license and setup screens.
  2. When the destination screen appears, click Show All Disks.
  3. Select the volume named macOS Tahoe (or the exact name you chose), not Macintosh HD or another existing volume.
  4. Verify the destination name one more time, authorize with an administrator password if requested, and begin installation.
  5. Keep the Mac connected to power and online while it restarts and completes installation. Do not erase the original volume if an installation attempt fails.

After the first boot, Tahoe’s Setup Assistant creates a separate user environment. Applications, system settings, extensions, login items and privacy permissions from the original macOS are not automatically copied. Cloud-synced files can appear in both systems and may use storage twice; avoid sharing a live application library or database unless its developer explicitly supports it.

Step 4: Choose which macOS starts

Set a default system

  1. Boot into the system you want to make the default.
  2. Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Startup Disk.
  3. Select the Tahoe or original macOS volume and click Restart.

Use Apple’s startup-disk guide for the current interface: Startup Disk settings.

Make a one-time choice at startup

  • Apple silicon: shut down, then press and hold the power button until Loading startup options appears. Select the desired volume and continue.
  • Intel: shut down or restart, hold Option while starting, select the desired volume, then press Return or click the arrow.

Apple’s startup-picker instructions are at Select a startup disk on Mac.

Update each installation separately

Boot into Tahoe and run its software updates, then boot into the original macOS and update it separately. Each installation has its own system files and settings. Apple also warns that later macOS releases can change firmware or security behavior, so dual-booting is safer and more reversible than replacing your system, but it is not a guarantee that an older macOS will remain usable forever.

Troubleshooting

The Tahoe volume is missing from Show All Disks

  1. Quit the installer and open Disk Utility.
  2. Choose View → Show All Devices and verify the APFS container and volume hierarchy.
  3. Confirm the new volume is mounted and formatted APFS.
  4. Check Tahoe compatibility again and re-download the full installer from Apple if necessary.

The Mac starts in the old macOS

This usually means the default startup disk is still the old volume. Select Tahoe in System Settings → General → Startup Disk, or use the Apple-silicon power-button picker or Intel Option-key picker.

Installation stops or fails

Keep power and internet connected, restart into the original macOS if possible, and inspect the Tahoe volume in Disk Utility. Use First Aid cautiously and never erase the wrong volume. Re-download the installer. If the normal installer continues to fail, Apple’s bootable-installer procedure can provide a fallback: Create a bootable installer for macOS.

There is not enough space

Do not delete arbitrary APFS system volumes. Remove or move large personal files, reduce unnecessary local data, or install Tahoe on an external SSD. If the test is over, delete the Tahoe volume using the removal procedure below.

Security or startup restrictions appear

Apple silicon has security policy controls for each installed operating system (Apple Platform Security). On Intel Macs with a T2 chip, Startup Security Utility controls secure boot and removable-media startup (Apple’s T2 security guide). These settings matter mainly for external booting, legacy extensions or blocked removable media; do not lower security without understanding the consequence.

When an external SSD is better

Use an external SSD when internal free space is tight, you want to avoid changing the internal APFS container, or Tahoe is a temporary test environment. The drive must stay connected whenever you boot Tahoe, and performance depends on the SSD, enclosure, cable and port. Apple supports installing macOS on external storage through the same guidance at Install macOS on a separate volume.

Optional: create a bootable Tahoe USB

This is not required for the normal separate-volume installation. It is useful for repeated installs or when the standard installer fails. Apple says the target USB volume will be erased; a 32 GB flash drive is more than enough for a current macOS installer.

On Apple silicon, connect the installer, shut down, hold the power button, and select it from startup options. On Intel, connect it and hold Option while starting. A T2 Intel Mac may require Startup Security Utility settings that permit external or removable media. Follow Apple’s complete instructions at How to create a bootable installer for macOS.

Remove Tahoe safely

  1. Start up from the macOS volume you intend to keep; never delete the volume you are currently using.
  2. Open Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility.
  3. Select the Tahoe volume by its exact name.
  4. Choose Edit → Delete APFS Volume, or use the delete-volume control.
  5. If Disk Utility identifies a volume group, choose to delete the volume group when prompted.
  6. Confirm the name and destination carefully before accepting the deletion.

Apple’s separate-volume guidance covers this removal process at support.apple.com/en-us/118282. Deleting Tahoe removes its applications, accounts and data, so copy anything you need first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tahoe and my current macOS use the same physical disk?

Yes. Apple supports installing the second system on another APFS volume in the same APFS container, provided the Mac is compatible and has adequate free capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a USB installer?

No. The normal full-installer workflow does not require one; a bootable USB is an optional fallback for failed or repeated installations.

Will installing Tahoe copy my old apps and settings?

No. Tahoe creates a separate operating-system environment. Install applications and configure settings separately; cloud-synced data may appear in both systems.

Can I install Tahoe on an unsupported Mac?

Apple’s supported procedure requires a compatible model. Check the current model-specific list before attempting installation; unsupported-installation workarounds are outside this guide.
