How to Install LineageOS on a Supported Android Phone

Install LineageOS only by following the current official guide for your phone’s exact model and codename. The broad sequence is to verify support, back up your data, unlock the bootloader, install any required stock firmware and recovery, format data when instructed, sideload the matching LineageOS package, install optional add-ons in the documented order, and reboot only when the device page says it is safe.

Those steps are not interchangeable between phones. The 10.or G guide and the Pixel 3a (sunfish) guide use different prerequisites and partition instructions, while the Z00L page says that device is no longer maintained and has no official bootloader-unlock method. Treat the device page—not a generic tutorial—as the authority for every image, command, firmware build and reboot point.

What you need to establish before installing

A LineageOS installation is a replacement of the phone’s stock operating system, recovery environment and, on some models, parts of the device’s partition layout. The risk is not just a failed app installation: unlocking and formatting can erase personal files, and incorrect firmware can leave a phone unable to boot. Start by proving that your exact handset is an installable target.

Identify the exact model and codename

Open the official LineageOS device list and select the page that matches the model number printed in Android settings, on the box or on the device label. A family name is not enough. Different regional variants, storage versions and carrier models can use different bootloaders, firmware and partition layouts. Do not assume that a guide for one model in a product family applies to another.

Record the codename shown in the device page URL and verify it against the phone. The Pixel 3a guide, for example, is published for the codename sunfish; the 10.or G has its own guide. If the model number or codename does not match exactly, stop and find the correct page rather than adapting commands.

Check maintenance and unlock availability

A page appearing in the wiki does not guarantee that the phone is currently maintained or that its bootloader can still be unlocked. The Z00L device notice explicitly labels that device as no longer maintained and says an official bootloader-unlock method is unavailable. An unavailable unlock path is a hard stop: do not use an unofficial exploit or a guide for a different model as a substitute.

Read the page’s maintenance notice, supported variants and bootloader section immediately before starting. Device status and instructions can change, so an old bookmark, video or forum post is not a reliable replacement for the live official page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check regional and carrier constraints

Some phones can be unlocked only through a manufacturer process that varies by geography or carrier configuration. Confirm that the documented method is available for your region and your specific carrier model. If the page requires an unlock token, account approval or a particular stock build, complete that requirement before changing the phone.

What the official examples show

The following examples demonstrate why a universal command list is unsafe. They are orientation points, not substitute installation guides.

Device page Established requirements or warnings Practical consequence
10.or G The guide requires an exact model match, ADB and fastboot on a computer, a USB connection for flashing recovery and sideloading the LineageOS package, and completion of the remaining documented steps before the first boot. Prepare a computer and data-capable USB cable, verify fastboot detection, and do not boot the newly installed system early.
Pixel 3a (sunfish) The guide specifies a stock-operating-system prerequisite and includes a partition step. It warns that incorrect firmware can cause failure, crashes or permanent damage. Install the exact prerequisite firmware and perform the partition operation exactly as written for sunfish; never substitute another Pixel image.
Z00L The device page says the device is no longer maintained and that an official bootloader-unlock method is unavailable. Do not begin an installation through unofficial unlocking instructions; the documented route is not available.

For the complete, model-specific procedure, use the 10.or G installation page or the sunfish installation page only when your phone is that exact device.

Back up and protect your accounts before unlocking

Assume unlocking will erase the phone

The official guides warn that bootloader unlocking erases user data. Copy photos, videos, documents, authenticator exports, messages and app data to a separate location before you issue or approve an unlock. A backup stored only on the phone will disappear when the erase occurs.

  • Export two-factor-authentication recovery codes and verify that you can sign in to critical accounts without the old installation.
  • Move files from internal storage to a computer or another independent storage location.
  • Confirm that contacts, calendars and password-manager data are synchronized or exported according to each app’s own instructions.
  • Charge the phone sufficiently for a long transfer and flashing session, and avoid starting with an unreliable cable or intermittent USB port.

Plan for the format-data step

Installation guides commonly include a recovery action labelled format data or factory reset. That action deletes internal files even if the bootloader was already unlocked. Do not format until the device page instructs you to, and do not interpret a successful format as a backup. Remove or copy any files you still need before reaching that step.

Handle Factory Reset Protection deliberately

If the device guide tells you to remove Google accounts or take another action to avoid Factory Reset Protection, do it while the stock system is still working. Follow the page’s wording for your model; do not assume the same account procedure applies to every Android phone.

Prepare the computer, connection and packages

Install the documented tools

The 10.or G guide specifically requires ADB and fastboot on a computer. Install the versions and platform instructions linked or named by the current device page, then open a terminal or command prompt in the way that page describes. Other phones may require additional utilities or a different workflow; install only what the matching guide calls for.

Use a genuine data connection

You need a USB cable that carries data, not merely power. The cited installation procedures use USB to communicate with the bootloader, flash recovery and transfer the LineageOS package. If you lack a suitable cable, obtain one compatible with the phone’s connector, but remember that a cable cannot fix an unsupported model, a locked bootloader, missing firmware or an incorrect image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download only matching files

Use the downloads linked from the exact official device page. Keep the LineageOS package, recovery image, firmware and any optional add-on files together in a clearly named folder. Check that every filename identifies the same codename and, where required, the same release or firmware generation. Never rename a file in a way that hides its identity, and never use a recovery image or firmware package from a related phone.

Charge Samsung S10 to 50% in just 30 minutes—that’s up to 30% faster than with other 2.4A charger cable.

Verify the computer sees the phone

Follow the page’s check for fastboot detection before flashing anything. If the device is not detected, stop and resolve the USB connection, computer tool installation and phone mode first. A flash attempted against an unconfirmed or wrong device can turn a recoverable setup problem into a device problem.

Test the stock phone before replacing it

The 10.or G instructions advise checking important functions while the stock system is still installed. Make and receive a call, send and receive SMS, test mobile data and check any other function you cannot afford to lose. If your carrier requires VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioning, complete that provisioning on stock before migration when the guide says it is necessary.

Record the working carrier settings, SIM arrangement and Wi-Fi details so you can distinguish a LineageOS configuration issue from a service that was never provisioned. If a critical function already fails on stock, installing a different operating system is unlikely to repair the underlying carrier, hardware or account problem.

Follow the device page in its exact order

The sequence below explains how to work through an official guide without treating it as a universal command script. Replace each generic action with the exact command, filename and button sequence shown on your model’s page.

  1. Read the entire page first. Note prerequisites, warnings, firmware requirements, recovery instructions, partition operations, add-on order and the stated point at which rebooting is allowed. Make a written checklist before changing the phone.
  2. Return to the stock prerequisite. If the guide names a particular stock operating-system state or firmware build, install that state exactly as documented. The sunfish page includes a specific stock OS prerequisite; do not skip it because the phone currently boots.
  3. Enable the required Android settings. Use only the settings and authorization steps listed for your device. The names and availability of developer options can differ, and some models require an account or manufacturer approval before the unlock can proceed.
  4. Unlock the bootloader using the supported method. Confirm the phone model again before approving the erase. Expect user data to be deleted, and do not continue if the unlock method is unavailable for your variant, carrier or region.
  5. Boot or flash the specified recovery. Use the recovery image and boot mode named on the device page. The 10.or G workflow uses a computer and USB connection to flash recovery; another model may use a different method. A recovery image from another codename is not a safe substitute.
  6. Perform any partition operation exactly where instructed. The sunfish guide includes a partition step. Partition changes are device-specific; do not generalize that step to another phone or improvise a layout from a video.
  7. Format data or factory-reset at the documented point. This removes internal files. Confirm that your backup is complete before selecting the recovery action, and do not format earlier merely because the phone is already in recovery.
  8. Sideload the matching LineageOS package. The 10.or G guide uses ADB to transfer the package from the computer. Select the file identified for the exact model and follow the page’s instructions for entering sideload mode and confirming completion.
  9. Install optional add-ons only if you want them. If the page documents an add-on such as an application package, install it in the exact order and mode specified. Do not assume an add-on made for another Android release or device will work.
  10. Complete every remaining step before the first boot. The 10.or G page specifically warns not to boot into the installed system before the remaining documented steps are complete. Reboot only at the point the guide identifies as the finished state.

Device-specific cautions that change the workflow

10.or G

The 10.or G page is a useful example of the computer-assisted flow: install ADB and fastboot, connect the phone over USB, confirm fastboot detection, flash the recovery specified by the page and sideload the LineageOS package. It also emphasizes checking calls and SMS on stock and handling any required VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioning before migration.

Do not stop after the package transfer and boot immediately. The page says to finish the remaining instructions first. A recovery menu that offers a reboot option does not mean that rebooting at that moment is correct.

Pixel 3a (sunfish)

The sunfish guide demonstrates why firmware is part of the operating-system installation, not an optional afterthought. It names a stock OS prerequisite and includes a partition operation. Its warning is explicit: incorrect firmware can lead to failure, crashes or permanent damage. Download and install only the firmware generation named on the live page, then perform the partition step exactly as written.

Z00L

The Z00L notice is a decision point rather than an installation recipe. Because it says the device is no longer maintained and lacks an official bootloader-unlock method, there is no supported path to begin the standard process. Treat unofficial unlock tools, modified images and “universal” workarounds as outside the documented support route.

How to diagnose a failed or blocked installation

The phone is not detected in fastboot

  • Confirm that the phone is in the boot mode named by the device page, not ordinary Android or recovery.
  • Reconnect with a known data-capable USB cable and a reliable computer port.
  • Verify that ADB and fastboot are installed and that you are using the command or detection check shown in the official guide.
  • Stop if the computer identifies a different device or codename than the phone you intend to flash.

The bootloader cannot be unlocked

Recheck the exact model, carrier and region against the page’s unlock requirements. An unavailable official method is not a prompt to try a different model’s token or exploit. The Z00L page illustrates the outcome when no supported method exists: do not proceed through the standard installation.

Recovery or firmware flashing fails

Do not repeat the flash with a random file. Compare the codename, variant and firmware prerequisite with the live page, and confirm that the phone is in the required boot mode. On sunfish, the official warning about incorrect firmware includes crashes and permanent damage, so a mismatch should be treated as a serious stop condition.

The sideload is rejected

Check that the package is the official build for the exact device and that the recovery is the one specified for that device. Re-download a damaged file from the page’s official link, then repeat only the documented sideload procedure. Do not substitute a package for a nearby model or a different codename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone boot-loops or crashes after installation

Return to the device page’s prerequisites and sequence. A missed stock-firmware requirement, skipped partition operation, wrong recovery or early reboot can all place the phone in a state the guide did not support. Do not erase additional partitions or flash unrelated firmware while guessing; use the page’s recovery or restore instructions for that exact model.

Calls, SMS or Wi-Fi calling do not work

Compare the behavior with the stock checks you made before installation. If calls or SMS worked on stock but a carrier feature does not work after migration, review the LineageOS device page and carrier provisioning requirements. The 10.or G instructions specifically note that VoLTE or VoWiFi may need to be provisioned while still on stock.

Choosing a phone before you attempt LineageOS

If you are buying or selecting a handset for this purpose, evaluate the installation path rather than relying on a general “custom ROM compatible” label.

Question to answer Evidence to check on the official page
Is the exact phone supported? A matching model number, codename and official device page.
Is it actively maintained? The page’s current maintenance notice; a listing can remain visible after maintenance ends.
Can the bootloader be unlocked? A usable official unlock process for your geography, carrier configuration and variant.
Is the required firmware available? Downloadable stock firmware or OS prerequisite named by the guide.
How complex is installation? Recovery, partition and computer steps listed for that exact model.
Will essential functions work? Stock tests and any notes about cameras, calls, SMS, cellular data, VoLTE or VoWiFi.

These checks can distinguish a convenient supported handset from one that merely appears in an old list. The available material does not establish a universal ranking of phones, success rate or supported-device count, so choose based on the exact page and your own required functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the first successful boot

Let the initial setup finish before judging performance. Reconnect your accounts carefully, restore only the backups you verified, and test the functions you recorded on stock: calls, SMS, mobile data, Wi-Fi and any carrier-specific service. Keep the official device page bookmarked for updates, recovery instructions and model-specific warnings.

If you decide to return to stock, use the restore procedure for the same model and variant. Do not combine a factory image, bootloader procedure or partition layout from another phone. The same identity checks that prevented a bad LineageOS flash are required for a safe return.

A final pre-flash checklist

  • The exact model number and codename match the current official device page.
  • The page confirms a supported, usable bootloader-unlock route for your region and carrier variant.
  • You have read the complete guide, including firmware, recovery, partition, format-data, add-on and reboot instructions.
  • Your important files, account recovery methods and authentication data are stored somewhere other than the phone.
  • ADB and fastboot are installed as documented, and the computer can detect the phone in the required mode.
  • You have a reliable USB data cable and a stable computer connection.
  • The stock phone passes the calls, SMS, data and other hardware checks relevant to you.
  • Any required VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioning is complete while stock is installed.
  • Every downloaded image and package is for the exact codename and required release.
  • You know the precise point at which the guide permits the first reboot.
