In the profile where you want to use Play, open Apps, choose Google Play services, and tap Install. GrapheneOS installs the interdependent Google Play components, including Google Play Store. Open Play Store in that same profile, sign in if you need to download Store apps or make in-app purchases, and then install your apps normally.
Google Play remains sandboxed like any other application. It does not become a privileged system service or gain access to other user profiles. The steps below explain the exact setup, profile choices, account requirements, background-notification settings, compatibility limits, and fixes for common failures.

What “Google Play on GrapheneOS” actually is
GrapheneOS does not bundle Google applications or make Google services the operating system’s backend. Instead, it provides a compatibility layer that runs official Google Play releases as ordinary applications inside Android’s standard application sandbox. GrapheneOS describes this arrangement in its Usage Guide and features overview.
That design has two practical consequences:
- Play components receive no special privileges merely because they are Google components. They still use normal Android permissions and require your consent for access to profile data.
- Play and every app that depends on it are confined to the user or work profile in which they are installed. An app in one profile cannot use another profile’s Play installation.
GrapheneOS says compatibility is near-complete for applications that depend on Play, but the baseline layer cannot provide functionality that requires privileged access or deep operating-system integration. Individual banking, enterprise, payment, location, gaming, or device-integration features can therefore behave differently from a conventional Android installation.

What you need before installing
- A supported phone that already has GrapheneOS installed and has internet access.
- The built-in Apps application, GrapheneOS’s repository client.
- A decision about which profile will contain Play and the apps that depend on it.
- A Google account only if you intend to install applications through Play Store or use Play Store in-app purchases. The account is not required merely to install the sandboxed Play components.
You do not need a USB cable for this procedure. GrapheneOS’s cable requirement applies to flashing GrapheneOS itself with the WebUSB installer, not to adding Play after the operating system is already running. Installing GrapheneOS is a separate operation covered by the official install guide.
Choose the profile before you install
Install Play in the same profile as the apps that will use it. Most people should start with the Owner profile because it is the simplest arrangement. A separate user or work profile is useful when you want a tighter boundary around Play-dependent software—for example, keeping a small set of work applications away from your personal profile.
| Choice | Setup | Isolation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owner profile | Open Apps in Owner and install Play once; install dependent apps there. | Play is confined to Owner, but all Owner apps share that profile. | People who want the fewest steps and one primary app environment. |
| Separate user or work profile | Switch to the target profile, open its Apps app, and install Play there. Install dependent apps in that same profile. | Play and its dependent apps stay within that profile; the profiles do not share app data. | People who want Play limited to selected personal or work apps. |
Installing Play in Owner does not make it available to other profiles. If an app in a secondary profile needs Play, install the components separately while that profile is active. This profile-scoped behavior is part of GrapheneOS’s security model, not an error.

Install sandboxed Google Play step by step
1. Open GrapheneOS Apps
Open the app drawer and tap Apps. This is the GrapheneOS-provided repository client. Use it instead of downloading Google components from an unverified APK site. The official Usage Guide’s instruction is: “To install sandboxed Google Play, open our App Store, select Google Play services and install it.” See the current procedure at grapheneos.org/usage.
2. Select Google Play services
In Apps, select Google Play services. Tap Install and approve the requested installation. GrapheneOS handles the dependency relationship and installs Google Play Store together with Google Play services. You do not need to hunt for separate package files or install a third-party installer.
3. Wait for both components to finish
Allow the Apps client to complete the installation of the Play components. If you started in a secondary profile, remain in that profile while the installation completes. The resulting Play Store belongs only to that profile.

4. Open Play Store in the same profile
Launch Play Store from the profile where you installed it. If you open a Store icon from a different profile, that profile will not have access to the installation you just made.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Sign in only when you need Store functions
Sign in to a Google account when Play Store asks for one if you want to download apps from Google’s catalog or make in-app purchases. Signing in is not a prerequisite for having the sandboxed Play services and Store packages installed. Some individual applications may impose their own account or server-side requirements, independent of GrapheneOS.
6. Approve the normal Android source prompt
When Play Store requests permission to install applications, Android may ask you to authorize Play Store as an app source. Approve that request in the system prompt, then confirm each installation as Android requests it. This is the normal per-action consent model; Play Store does not receive a blanket privilege to install arbitrary software.
7. Install the applications you need
Search for an app in Play Store and select Install. Keep those apps in the same profile as Play services. Updates, uninstallation, app assets, feature delivery, and license checks are handled through Play Store in the usual way.
Keep background notifications working
GrapheneOS recommends exempting Google Play services from battery optimization when you rely on background functions such as push notifications. The exception is for Play services, not Play Store; Play Store itself does not need that battery-optimization exemption. Use the phone’s battery settings to add the exception, then test the notification-dependent app.
Battery optimization affects background execution, not whether the Play packages are installed. If notifications are delayed, check that the app itself has notification permission, that Play services is not restricted by battery management, and that the app is running in the profile where Play was installed.

How sandboxing affects permissions and data
Sandboxed Play is still subject to Android’s normal permission prompts. Google Play services cannot silently read data from another profile, and installing it does not grant Google access to every application on the phone. Each profile has its own app instances, permissions, accounts, and data.
This also means that a service you install in Owner cannot satisfy a dependency for an app installed in a work or secondary user profile. Install the needed Play components in every profile that requires them, and grant permissions separately in each profile.
GrapheneOS’s model leaves system services under GrapheneOS control. For location, requests are routed by default through GrapheneOS’s implementation. The Usage Guide documents settings for uncommon cases in which an application specifically requires Google’s network-location service; change those settings only when an app’s documented behavior calls for it.

Compatibility: what should work and what may not
GrapheneOS characterizes compatibility as near-complete for apps that depend on Play, but “near-complete” is not a guarantee that every feature works. The limiting factor is usually an app’s reliance on privileged APIs, device-integrated services, or proprietary checks that the sandboxed layer intentionally does not provide.
Ordinary Play-dependent apps
Apps that use Play for distribution, licensing, push messaging, maps, or in-app services generally have the components they need after you install Play in the correct profile and grant the requested permissions. Test the specific functions you care about rather than assuming that installation alone proves full compatibility.
Features requiring deeper system integration
Some functions need an extension or additional setup. Android Auto is a documented example: it requires an extension and separate configuration rather than working solely from the baseline sandboxed components. Check the current Usage Guide for the supported procedure before troubleshooting the app itself.

Account and anti-abuse checks
An app can require its own account, device attestation, enterprise enrollment, or payment verification even when Play services is installed correctly. Those requirements are controlled by the app provider and are not evidence that GrapheneOS failed to install Play.

Updates, installation, and app management
Play Store is the supported way to install and update Play Store applications on this setup. It also manages uninstallation, in-app purchases, delivery of app assets and features, and license checks. Android 12 and later can perform unattended updates for apps when Play Store was the last installer, subject to the phone’s update and permission settings; this behavior is described in the Usage Guide.
If you install an app through another source, Play Store may not be treated as its installer, and the unattended-update behavior may not apply. Keep the installation source consistent when you want Play Store to manage updates.
Updating GrapheneOS and updating Play components are separate maintenance tasks. Keep the operating system current through GrapheneOS’s normal system-update mechanism, and let Play Store update the applications it installed.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find Google Play services in Apps”
- Confirm that you opened GrapheneOS’s built-in Apps application, not a general app store or a web page.
- Check that the phone is online and that the Apps client has finished loading its catalog.
- If you are in a secondary profile, remain there and open that profile’s Apps instance; profile installations are separate.
Play Store is installed, but my app cannot see Play services
- Verify that the app and both Play components are in the same profile.
- Open Play Store in that profile and complete any sign-in or installation prompts.
- Review the app’s requested permissions and Android’s battery settings, especially if the failure involves background messaging.
Push notifications arrive late or not at all
- Grant the app notification permission.
- Exempt Google Play services from battery optimization as GrapheneOS recommends.
- Check that the app is not paused or restricted and that you are testing the instance in the active profile.
Play Store asks for a Google account
This is expected when you want to install Store apps or use in-app purchases. It is not required simply to keep the sandboxed Play packages installed. If you do not want to sign in, you can leave the components installed and use only applications whose own distribution and account requirements you satisfy.

Determine which function fails: sign-in, notifications, location, payments, device integration, or the app’s main interface. The distinction matters because each can have a different requirement. Review the app provider’s support information and the current GrapheneOS documentation. Do not assume that reinstalling Play will add a privileged API that the sandbox intentionally does not expose.

I installed Play in the wrong profile
Uninstall the Play components from the unwanted profile using Android’s normal app-management controls, switch to the intended profile, and repeat the Apps procedure there. Apps and their data do not move automatically between profiles.
Do not confuse app installation with installing GrapheneOS
GrapheneOS’s WebUSB installation process flashes the operating system and therefore requires a compatible USB cable, a supported browser and operating system, and a device reset. That process is distinct from installing sandboxed Google Play. Once GrapheneOS is already installed and the Apps app is available, adding Play is an on-device software setup and does not require the flashing cable.
If you are starting with a stock phone rather than an existing GrapheneOS installation, follow the complete GrapheneOS installation documentation first. Pay attention to its data-wipe warnings and verified-boot instructions; completing that operating-system installation is outside the Play-app procedure described here.

Choosing sandboxed Google Play is optional. You gain access to the Play Store catalog and services that many applications expect, while retaining GrapheneOS’s profile boundaries and permission model. Google Play is not a hidden system backend: it runs only where you install it, and it receives only the access allowed to those ordinary apps.
The trade-off is that installing Play introduces Google software and, if you sign in, a Google account into the selected profile. Keep Play-dependent apps together in a profile whose data and permissions you are comfortable managing. A separate profile can reduce the number of apps exposed to that installation, while Owner is easier when nearly all of your apps need Play.
Quick verification checklist
- Apps was opened from the GrapheneOS app drawer.
- Google Play services was installed through Apps, allowing Play Store to be installed as its dependency.
- Play Store and dependent applications are in the same user or work profile.
- You signed in only if Store downloads or in-app purchases require it.
- Play Store was authorized as an app source when Android displayed that prompt.
- Google Play services has a battery-optimization exception if background notifications matter.
- You tested the specific app feature you need and checked for documented extensions when deeper system integration is involved.
For the authoritative, current procedure and compatibility notes, consult GrapheneOS’s Usage Guide, which is updated as interface and platform behavior change.
