The reliable method is device-specific: open the official LineageOS installation guide for your exact phone, match the Google Apps package to both your LineageOS release and the architecture listed for that device, and install it from recovery immediately after LineageOS—before Android boots for the first time. LineageOS does not include Google Apps, so the Play Store and Google Play services must be added separately.
If you already booted LineageOS without Google Apps, the documented route is to back up your data, factory-reset the phone, sideload the matching package in recovery, and then boot again. The reset erases user data. Installing a package later from the running system, or flashing a random older ZIP, is not a dependable shortcut.

What Google Apps are—and what they do not guarantee
Google Apps (often called GApps) are optional add-on packages containing proprietary Google components such as the Play Store and Google Play services. They are separate from the open-source LineageOS operating system. A phone can boot and run LineageOS without them, but applications that depend on Google services, Play Store distribution, or push-notification infrastructure may need GApps or another compatible service layer.

Adding GApps also does not make an unlocked or modified phone indistinguishable from a factory device. Some phones expose bootloader-unlock or verified-boot state to Android, and LineageOS says it does not hide those security signals. Consequently, a banking, streaming, games, or other integrity-sensitive application may still refuse to run even when the Play Store opens normally. The project’s explanation is documented in its Frequently Asked Questions.
Before you download anything
Do not begin with a generic recovery-button recipe. Recovery names, firmware requirements, partition layouts, and reboot sequences differ by handset. The phone model and the installed or planned LineageOS release determine the correct procedure.
Identify the phone and its supported build
- Find the exact model identifier, not merely the retail name. Several phones share a marketing name but use different hardware.
- Open that model’s official LineageOS installation page and confirm that the device is currently supported.
- Note the LineageOS release named by the guide, the architecture it lists, the recommended recovery, firmware requirements, bootloader instructions, and any device-specific warnings.
- Read the complete guide before changing partitions or wiping data. Its backup, bootloader, firmware, and formatting instructions cannot safely be generalized from another phone.
Prepare the computer and cable
- Install the ADB and fastboot tools required by the device guide.
- Download the LineageOS ZIP for the exact model and release.
- Download the corresponding Google Apps ZIP for that same release and the architecture shown on the device page.
- Have a charged phone and a reliable USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry an ADB sideload or fastboot connection; if detection fails, try another suitable cable and another computer USB port.
- Back up anything you need before following instructions that format or reset user data.
Keep the two ZIP files available on the computer. Do not unzip them unless the device guide explicitly says to do so.

Choose the correct route for your phone’s current state

Install Google Apps before the first Android boot
The sequence below describes the common pattern. The official installation page for your phone takes precedence if it names different buttons, a recovery reboot, a slot change, or a different sideload order.
1. Enter the recovery named by the device guide
Use the guide’s bootloader or hardware-key method to start its specified recovery. Do not substitute a recovery from another model. If the guide requires a particular firmware level or bootloader state, complete that requirement first.

2. Install LineageOS
From recovery, choose the guide’s Apply update, ADB sideload, or equivalent option, then send the LineageOS ZIP from the computer. A device guide may show a command such as:
adb -d sideload /path/to/lineageos.zip
That command is an example, not a universal command line. Replace the path and follow the exact syntax and recovery transitions on your own model’s page.

When the LineageOS installation completes, remain in recovery. Do not select a reboot-to-system option merely to check that the ROM works. The Google Apps guidance warns that booting LineageOS first changes the required procedure and can result in crashes.
4. Sideload the matching Google Apps ZIP
Choose the recovery’s sideload option again and send the package selected for the exact LineageOS release and architecture. For example, the current cited list maps LineageOS 21 to Android 14, LineageOS 22 to Android 15, and LineageOS 23 to Android 16; verify that mapping and the available ARM or ARM64 file on the official page at installation time.
Recovery may display a signature-verification warning. The device documentation explains that this add-on is not signed with LineageOS’s official key, so the prompt is expected for the listed Google Apps package. Continue only according to the official guide and only for the package you intentionally downloaded; do not accept arbitrary warnings for unknown files.

Some recoveries show a confusing host-side transfer failure or a percentage that appears to stop near completion even though the package was accepted. Read the recovery’s own result and the device guide’s instructions instead of judging success from one computer-side percentage.
5. Reboot only after all selected packages are installed
Use recovery’s reboot-to-system action after LineageOS and Google Apps have both completed. First boot and setup time vary by device, so there is no safe universal duration to promise. Once Android starts, complete setup and open the Play Store to allow its components to update normally.
Can you install GApps after first boot?
Not by simply flashing a ZIP from the running system. The official guidance says that if you reboot into LineageOS before installing Google Apps, you must factory-reset and then install them before booting again; otherwise crashes are expected. The reset removes accounts, applications, settings, and other user data from the phone.
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, and any files you cannot replace.
- Follow the model-specific guide to enter recovery and perform its factory reset or format-data step.
- Without booting Android, sideload the recommended Google Apps package for the installed LineageOS release and architecture.
- Reboot to Android and restore your data during setup.
If the guide uses a different wording for the reset or requires a recovery reboot between steps, follow that wording. Do not use an older package as a shortcut; package lists and Android releases are tied to the build.
Fix “Google Play Store not working” after installation
Start with the installation sequence, not with random cache-clearing advice. The likely branch depends on when the failure began and what the phone reports.

Play Store or Google Play services crashes immediately
- Ask whether Android was booted before the Google Apps ZIP was installed. If yes, back up the phone and use the factory-reset, sideload, and reboot sequence above.
- Check the exact LineageOS release in Settings and compare it with the package’s intended release. A package for a different Android generation is not a valid substitute.
- Confirm the architecture listed on the device’s official page and make sure the downloaded ZIP matches it.
- Repeat the recovery sequence from the device guide, including any required reboot into recovery. The project warns that deviating from packages listed in its wiki can cause problems.
Clearing a cache, changing the date, or reflashing an arbitrary ZIP is not established as a universal official fix for this failure. If the matching package and documented sequence still fail, capture the exact recovery result and error text before asking for device-specific help.
Recovery says signature verification failed
For the documented Google Apps add-on, this warning can be expected because the file is not signed with LineageOS’s official key. Use the continuation instructed by your phone’s official installation page. This does not mean every unsigned or unfamiliar package is safe; verify the file and source before proceeding.
The Play Store opens, but one app refuses to run
That is an app-eligibility or integrity issue rather than proof that the GApps installation failed. LineageOS documents that some devices report bootloader-unlock and verified-boot status, and the project does not conceal those flags. Installing Google services therefore cannot guarantee access to an integrity-sensitive application.
- Read the device’s official quirks or known-issues page.
- Check the application provider’s stated requirements for supported devices and security status.
- Record the exact message, such as an unsupported-device notice or an integrity failure, rather than treating every refusal as a Play Store problem.
Do not treat integrity-bypass techniques as official fixes. The project’s position is summarized in its FAQ: “We don’t purposefully remove those flags, as it’s not our place to lie about security features.”
Apps will not install, or settings and the lock screen behave oddly
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) can be involved when Google accounts were not removed from the stock installation as required by the device instructions. The symptoms vary, so this is not a definitive diagnosis without the actual message and model.

If the phone is already in this state, consult the official support instructions for that device. Avoid repeating blind wipes or flashing unrelated ZIP files, which can remove data without addressing the account or provisioning state that caused the problem.
Fastboot or ADB does not detect the phone
- Confirm that the phone is in the mode named by the guide: bootloader/fastboot and recovery are different modes.
- Check that the ADB and fastboot tools are installed and that the computer is using the connection method the guide specifies.
- Try another USB data cable and another USB port. A cable that charges but lacks data lines will not work for sideloading or fastboot.
- Reconnect after entering the correct mode and rerun the guide’s detection command. Do not infer a device fault until the cable, port, mode, and tool installation have been checked.
Notifications do not arrive
Push notifications are a separate service question. The FAQ says they require Google Apps or MicroG; with MicroG, Google Cloud Messaging must be enabled in MicroG’s settings. Installing or reinstalling a Play Store ZIP alone is not a general notification repair.

Choose based on the applications and services you actually need. Installing GApps is optional, but once you choose it, the release, architecture, and timing rules remain mandatory.

When to stop and request device-specific help
The title alone does not identify a handset, release, architecture, recovery, or error. Ask for help with those details rather than applying a generic ZIP or button combination. Include:
- Exact phone model and region or variant, if the manufacturer uses multiple variants.
- LineageOS release and build date shown by the phone or downloaded filename.
- Architecture listed on the official device guide.
- Recovery name and the step at which it failed.
- Whether Android was booted before GApps installation.
- The complete Play Store, recovery, ADB, or boot message, copied exactly.
With those facts, a helper can distinguish a package mismatch, an ordering error, a USB connection problem, FRP, or an app’s independent integrity requirement instead of recommending an unsafe universal fix.
