Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Raspberry Pi OS, open a terminal and run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install ffmpeg. That installs FFmpeg from the OS package manager; it does not configure or start a YouTube livestream. For that, you also need a media source, an FFmpeg build with the required encoder and protocol support, YouTube’s stream URL and key, and a connection that can sustain your chosen bitrate.
Install FFmpeg on Raspberry Pi OS
- Open a terminal on the Pi, or connect to it using a remote-access method you have already configured.
- Refresh APT’s package lists:
sudo apt update. This lets APT check the package information available for your configured repositories. - Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg. Review the packages APT proposes and confirm the installation if prompted. - Check that the command is available:
ffmpeg -version. This is a practical verification step; the exact version and compiled features depend on the installed OS image and package.
Raspberry Pi OS is Debian-based, but not every Pi runs the same release. Use the commands above rather than assuming a particular release. A network connection is needed to download packages; a supported Wi-Fi connection works, so Ethernet is not mandatory.
Check whether your FFmpeg build can do what the stream needs
Installing the package does not establish that your specific build includes every encoder or network protocol. Inspect the locally available options before constructing a stream command:
ffmpeg -encoderslists encoders available in the installed build.ffmpeg -protocolslists supported input and output protocols.
Check for the video encoder and streaming protocol you intend to use. Package capabilities can vary; the generic installation command does not promise a particular codec, hardware-encoding feature, or RTMPS support. Do not assume that installation enables hardware encoding.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare YouTube Live separately
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Enter those into your encoder’s configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, command example, or public repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose a video source. That might be camera capture or an existing video source; a camera is not required just to install FFmpeg. A camera-based workflow also requires a compatible camera and a working capture path.
- Configure the encoder for a codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, bitrate, and keyframe interval supported by both your local FFmpeg build and your Pi/network setup.
- Start with a private or otherwise non-public test and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for an event.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. AAC or MP3 audio is listed; for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says only AAC is supported. These are YouTube ingest options, not proof that a particular Pi or FFmpeg package can encode them in real time.
Choose a bitrate the Pi and connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates are platform targets, not Raspberry Pi performance guarantees:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Check your actual upload capacity and test with representative movement and audio. If the Pi cannot encode steadily or the connection cannot maintain the target, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its live system detects encoder settings and transcodes streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable incoming stream.
Why there is no universal FFmpeg-to-YouTube command here
A complete command depends on the Pi model, OS image, camera or other input, FFmpeg build, available encoders and protocols, and the stream settings YouTube expects. Those details are not established by the generic package-install instructions, so a single copy-and-paste command could fail or make unsupported assumptions. First confirm the local build’s capabilities, identify the exact input, and select settings the device can sustain; then build and test the command for that combination.

Common problems and what to check
ffmpeg: command not found: Check whether installation completed, then runffmpeg -versionagain. If APT could not find or download the package, verify the Pi’s network connection and rerunsudo apt update.- Encoder or protocol is unavailable: Confirm the installed build’s options with
ffmpeg -encodersandffmpeg -protocols. Choose a supported method or use a build that provides the needed capability. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream URL and key are entered in the correct fields, that the key is current, and that the selected protocol is supported by the local build and YouTube ingest configuration.
- Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops frames: Test upload capacity, then lower the video target and retest. A bitrate recommendation does not guarantee that your network can deliver it continuously.
- The Pi cannot keep up: Reduce resolution or frame rate and verify again with the actual input. No generic install command establishes real-time performance for every Pi model, cooling condition, or source.
- Live streaming is not available yet: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Complete setup in advance rather than waiting until the event.
Copyright and the content you stream
FFmpeg installation does not grant rights to stream the material you feed it, and technical acceptance by YouTube is not a copyright clearance. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable rules for your channel and content before streaming. For an uploaded-video workflow, StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist; it is a practical check, not a substitute for permission or legal advice.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube rather than broadcast a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
