How to Install Fallout 4 Mods Safely on PC (Current Runtime and F4SE Guide)

The safest Fallout 4 mod setup is a controlled one: record your exact game build, back up saves, use one mod manager, install dependencies before the mods that need them, deploy and sort plugins, and test in small batches. Fallout 4 updates can change the runtime that mods and the Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) require, so a setup that worked yesterday may stop working after an update.

What makes a Fallout 4 mod installation safe?

Safety means preserving a working game and recoverable saves while you add changes one layer at a time. Bethesda Support explicitly says, “We strongly recommend you back up your Fallout 4 saves before installing a new mod.” Bethesda also warns that if you choose to download and use mods, you do so at your own risk.

A safe workflow has six characteristics:

  • You know whether you are running the PC version and which Fallout4.exe build is installed.
  • Your saves have a dated copy outside the active Fallout 4 save folder.
  • One manager controls installation, deployment and plugin order.
  • Every required framework, library and DLC is installed before the mod that depends on it.
  • F4SE-dependent mods are launched through a matching F4SE loader rather than directly through Fallout4.exe.
  • You add and test a few changes at a time, so a failure has a small search area.

There is no authoritative universal number of mods that is guaranteed to be safe. Stability depends on the game build, plugin types, scripts, load order, assets, hardware and the specific combination you install.

Step 1: Record and verify your Fallout 4 runtime

Fallout 4 mod compatibility is build-specific. The versions most often encountered by current PC guides include 1.10.163, 1.10.980 and 1.11.x, but the correct choice is the version actually installed on your computer.

#1 Best Overall

Find the installed build

  1. Open the Fallout 4 installation folder in Windows.
  2. Right-click Fallout4.exe and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab and record the file version.
  4. Write the build in your mod notes before downloading F4SE or any native-code mod.

Do not assume the game version from an old guide, a mod’s upload date or the version shown in a launcher. The executable’s file version is the compatibility reference for F4SE and other components that hook into the game.

Decide whether to stay current or use a deliberately maintained older build

Staying on the current runtime reduces the need to prevent updates, but older mods may not yet support it. A deliberately downgraded runtime can preserve compatibility with a legacy mod list, yet it adds maintenance: you must prevent an accidental update, keep the matching F4SE build and follow instructions written for that exact runtime. Do not downgrade casually or mix files intended for different builds.

Approach Benefit Cost or risk Best fit
Current runtime Works with mods updated for the latest game files and requires fewer protections against updates. Older F4SE plugins or native-code mods may be incompatible until their authors release updates. New installations and players choosing actively maintained mods.
Deliberately maintained older runtime Can retain a known-good legacy load order. Higher maintenance burden; every mod and F4SE component must target that exact build, and an unintended game update can break the setup. Experienced users preserving a documented older profile.

Step 2: Back up saves and the game before changing anything

Copy your saves

Close the game and copy the contents of:

C:Usersuser.nameDocumentsMy GamesFallout4Saves

Replace user.name with your Windows account name. Put the files in a separate folder such as Fallout 4 Save backups2026-10-17-before-mod-name, on another drive if possible. Keep several dated snapshots rather than overwriting one backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup is useful only if you can identify which load order created it. Record the date, Fallout 4 runtime, F4SE version (if used) and the mods enabled at the time.

Protect the game installation before a large change

For a major overhaul, keep a separate copy of the game folder or use your platform’s file-verification and reinstall options as a recovery plan. This is not a substitute for save backups: restoring game files does not restore a save that has been damaged by a removed or incompatible scripted mod.

Use a test save for experiments

Do not test an unfamiliar scripted mod on your only long-running character. Make a disposable test save, confirm the mod’s stated behavior there, and keep your main save untouched until the setup has survived several launches and normal gameplay.

Step 3: Choose one source and one management workflow

Bethesda’s official distribution route is Bethesda.net and the in-game Mods menu. For a larger PC setup, many users choose Nexus Mods with Vortex. Both approaches can work, but the important safety rule is to understand who controls files, deployment and the active plugin list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Workflow Strengths Limitations and precautions
Bethesda.net and the in-game Mods menu Official discovery and an integrated console-style interface; convenient for a small selection of supported mods. Less control for complex dependency chains and file conflicts. Do not add a second manager without understanding how the two systems interact.
Nexus Mods with Vortex Vortex can install, enable, deploy and track mods; it uses LOOT-assisted plugin sorting and supports custom dependency or group rules. You must resolve file conflicts deliberately, deploy after changes and read LOOT warnings. A downloaded archive that has not been deployed is not active.
Manual installation Direct control over every file and useful for a single simple mod or a tool whose author specifically requires it. Harder to reverse, easier to leave orphaned files and more difficult to audit when several mods overlap.

Pick one primary workflow for a profile. Mixing the in-game manager, Vortex and manual file copying can leave you unsure which tool owns plugins.txt, which files are deployed and which version of a mod is active.

Step 4: Read each mod page before downloading

Do not install from the file name alone. Read the complete description, requirements, compatibility notes, installation instructions and uninstall guidance.

Check these requirements

  • Runtime: the mod must support your exact Fallout 4 build where the author specifies a build.
  • DLC: confirm which official add-ons are required. A missing DLC master can prevent the game from loading.
  • Frameworks and libraries: install required libraries before the mod that calls them.
  • F4SE: determine whether the mod requires the script extender or a particular F4SE plugin.
  • Conflicts: note incompatible overhauls, edits to the same records and patches that must load after a parent mod.
  • File instructions: preserve the author’s folder structure and any required filenames.
  • Uninstall rules: scripted mods may require a clean save, an in-game uninstall sequence or no removal at all from an active character.

Install dependencies from the bottom up

If Mod C requires Mod B and Mod B requires Mod A, install and verify A first, then B, then C. A mod manager can detect missing masters, but it cannot make an absent dependency work. Add only a few related items per batch and launch the game after each batch.

Step 5: Install, enable and deploy with Vortex

Vortex’s downloaded state and deployed state are different. A file can be present in the manager but have no effect in game until the mod is enabled and deployed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Vortex and point it to the existing Fallout 4 installation when prompted.
  2. Download the mod archive from its author’s or hosting page using the method the page supports.
  3. In Vortex, open the Mods view and confirm the archive has finished importing.
  4. Enable the mod. If Vortex reports a required dependency, install that dependency first.
  5. Review file-conflict notifications. Choose which mod should win only when you understand the author’s instructions; a later file is not automatically the correct file.
  6. Click Deploy Mods. Wait for deployment to complete before launching.
  7. Open the Plugins view and confirm the plugin is enabled if the mod includes an .esp, .esm or light plugin.

For a texture-only mod with no plugin, the change may appear in the deployed files without a plugin entry. For a plugin mod, both deployment and plugin activation matter.

Step 6: Sort and inspect the load order

Let Vortex’s LOOT integration sort plugins, then read the warnings instead of treating the sorted list as a guarantee of compatibility. LOOT can identify many ordering requirements, missing masters and known conflicts, while Vortex allows custom rules for cases where an author specifies a relationship that automated sorting does not know.

What to inspect after sorting

  • Missing masters: install the named requirement or disable the plugin that needs it.
  • Unresolved conflicts: read both mod pages and install a compatibility patch when the authors provide one.
  • Author load-order rules: create a custom rule when the mod author explicitly says one plugin must load before or after another.
  • Disabled plugins: verify that a required plugin was not left unchecked.
  • Unexpected overwrites: inspect which archive supplies the winning file and whether that is intentional.

Do not manually drag plugins simply to make the list look tidy. Manual ordering without understanding record conflicts can create subtle problems that do not appear until many hours into a save.

Step 7: Add F4SE only when a mod requires it

F4SE is not required for every Fallout 4 mod. It is required by mods that use script-extender functions or F4SE plugins, and the build must match your exact Fallout 4 runtime.

Match the versions

  1. Confirm the Fallout4.exe version you recorded earlier.
  2. Read the F4SE release information and choose the build that explicitly supports that runtime.
  3. Check every F4SE-dependent mod for its own supported runtime and F4SE requirements.
  4. Do not copy DLLs from an older setup into a newer runtime unless the author states that they are compatible.

Launch through the script extender

Start the game with f4se_loader.exe, the F4SE tool configured in Vortex, or another launcher that explicitly invokes F4SE. Launching Fallout4.exe directly bypasses F4SE-dependent features, so a mod may appear installed while doing nothing.

After an update, verify that the loader starts successfully before troubleshooting individual mods. A runtime/F4SE mismatch can cause an immediate crash before the main menu.

Step 8: Test in small, reversible batches

Start Fallout 4 after each small group of related changes. Confirm the exact behavior promised by the mod’s page rather than assuming that reaching the main menu proves success.

  1. Launch through the correct executable or Vortex tool.
  2. Load the disposable test save or begin a new game if the mod affects starting content.
  3. Check the mod’s stated change: an item, menu, visual effect, quest, setting or console command.
  4. Play long enough to exercise scripts that the author says initialize after loading.
  5. Close the game, record the working combination and add the next small batch.

If a new batch fails, disable roughly half of that batch and retest. Continue halving until the problematic mod or interaction is isolated. Restore the dated save backup rather than repeatedly loading a save created with a broken scripted setup.

What to do after a Fallout 4 update

Treat every game update as a compatibility event, not as a routine patch. Before launching an established profile:

  1. Record the new Fallout4.exe version.
  2. Check whether the installed F4SE build supports it.
  3. Read the pages for every F4SE plugin and other native-code dependency.
  4. Check major framework and script mods for an update or an explicit compatibility statement.
  5. Keep the old profile and save backup untouched until the new combination is confirmed.
  6. Disable automatic updates or use the author’s documented version-control method only if you understand how it affects your installation.

Do not update a working profile immediately before an important play session. If the update has already changed the runtime, launching the old profile can produce a crash, missing features or a save that now depends on a partially loaded plugin set.

Troubleshooting: identify the failure before changing more files

Nothing changes in game

  • Confirm the mod is enabled in Vortex or the selected manager.
  • Click Deploy Mods and verify deployment completed.
  • Check whether the mod is asset-only or requires an enabled plugin.
  • Look for missing dependencies, DLC requirements and disabled plugins.
  • Launch through f4se_loader.exe or the configured F4SE tool if the mod requires F4SE.
  • Read the installation section for an archive subfolder that must be moved or a file that must retain its original name.

The game crashes immediately

  • Check for a Fallout 4 runtime/F4SE mismatch.
  • Open LOOT and read missing-master warnings.
  • Disable the most recent batch, deploy again and retest.
  • Remove unverified DLLs or executables and reinstall only from the author’s page or the official tool page.

A save crashes or will not load

Determine whether the save was created with a plugin that is now disabled or removed. Re-enable the exact plugin set if possible. If the problem began after removing a scripted mod, follow that mod’s uninstall instructions; restoring the dated save backup is safer than repeatedly opening the affected save with a different load order.

Textures are missing, purple or visibly wrong

Reinstall the archive and preserve the filenames and folder structure supplied by the author. Check whether another texture archive is winning the conflict and whether the mod requires a specific load or overwrite rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Problems appear only after several hours

Late failures often involve scripted interactions, an unresolved conflict or a mod removed from an active save. Return to the last known-good backup, disable only the suspect batch and test on a disposable save before rebuilding the profile.

Rules for removing mods safely

  • Keep a dated save backup before every removal, not only before installation.
  • Read the author’s uninstall instructions first.
  • Do not remove a scripted mod from an active save unless the author documents a safe procedure.
  • Disable and test on a disposable save before touching your main character.
  • After removal, deploy again, sort plugins and check for missing masters.
  • If the save still depends on the removed plugin, restore a backup created before that plugin was installed.

A compact pre-launch checklist

  • PC version confirmed.
  • Fallout4.exe build recorded.
  • Dated save backup copied to a separate folder.
  • One manager selected and all other workflows understood or disabled.
  • Mod requirements, DLC, runtime and conflicts checked.
  • Dependencies installed before dependent mods.
  • Vortex mods enabled and deployed.
  • LOOT warnings and missing masters resolved.
  • F4SE matched to the runtime and launched through its loader when required.
  • New changes tested in a small batch on a test save.

Following this sequence will not make every mod combination compatible, but it keeps failures understandable and gives you a practical recovery path instead of risking your only save or rebuilding the entire installation from memory.
