Fedora uses the same package set with dnf.

The exact repository setup depends on your distribution, release, and CPU architecture. Identify those first, use the matching Docker procedure, and do not assume that an Ubuntu repository block will work on Debian or a derivative.

What Docker Compose V2 is
Docker Compose V2 is the current Compose implementation delivered on Linux as a Docker CLI plugin. Its package is named docker-compose-plugin, and its command is docker compose. The space is significant: docker-compose is the older standalone command and is not the command this installation guide targets.
Compose reads a Compose application definition and sends the requested operations through the Docker Engine. The Docker CLI and a working Engine are therefore prerequisites. Installing only the plugin does not give a VPS a container runtime, and a running CLI without an active daemon will still fail when it tries to create or start containers.

Before you install: identify the VPS
Distribution names and releases determine which repository instructions and package manager you need. On the VPS, run:
cat /etc/os-releaseOn Ubuntu or Debian, also confirm the architecture reported by the package manager:
dpkg --print-architectureDocker publishes separate installation procedures for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, RHEL, and Raspberry Pi OS. Architecture support varies by distribution, so use the procedure that matches both the operating system and the architecture shown by your VPS. A derivative may identify itself as Ubuntu- or Debian-based while requiring substitutions in the repository configuration; follow the instructions for the closest supported base only when the derivative documents compatibility.
Repository installation versus a manual plugin
For a normal VPS, repository installation is the better default. It installs the Engine and its supporting components through the distribution package workflow and lets ordinary package updates deliver newer Compose builds. Docker also documents a manual plugin installation for systems where the repository route is unavailable.

Do not hard-code one universal Compose version in a general-purpose installation. Package versions vary with distribution, release, architecture, and repository state. Pin a specific release only when you have a reproducibility requirement and a documented release-selection process.
Install Docker Compose V2 on Ubuntu or Debian
1. Remove conflicting packages, if present
Docker’s Ubuntu and Debian procedures list several packages that can conflict with the official Engine and plugin packages. Check whether any are installed before adding Docker’s repository:
sudo apt remove docker.io docker-compose docker-compose-v2 docker-doc docker-buildx podman-docker containerd runcReview the packages and services that apt proposes to remove before confirming. Do not remove a package blindly on a production VPS: an existing container workload, runtime, or automation may depend on it. The purpose of this step is to prevent two competing package families from owning the same commands or runtime components.

2. Configure Docker’s official APT repository
Use Docker’s distribution-specific Ubuntu or Debian installation procedure to install the repository key and add the official APT repository. Copy the repository block for the actual operating system and release shown by /etc/os-release; the suite value is not interchangeable between Ubuntu and Debian. After the key and repository are configured, refresh package metadata:
sudo apt updateIf APT reports a missing key, an unsupported suite, or a repository that has no installation candidate, stop and correct the distribution-specific repository configuration rather than substituting a different release name. A repository built for another release can produce dependency conflicts or an incomplete security update path.
3. Install the Engine, CLI, runtime, Buildx, and Compose
Install the complete package set documented for Ubuntu and Debian:
sudo apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-pluginThe packages serve different roles:
docker-ceprovides the Docker Engine daemon.docker-ce-cliprovides thedockercommand-line client.containerd.iosupplies the container runtime used by the Engine.docker-buildx-pluginprovides the Buildx builder integration.docker-compose-pluginadds the Compose V2 subcommand to the Docker CLI.
Installing the plugin without the CLI leaves no supported way to invoke docker compose; installing the CLI without the Engine leaves the client unable to contact a daemon.
4. Check and start the Docker service
Inspect the daemon first:
sudo systemctl status dockerIf the status is inactive, start it:
sudo systemctl start dockerThe start command is conditional; do not restart a healthy production daemon just because the command appears in a guide. If the service will not start, investigate the service failure before troubleshooting a Compose file. Check the unit status and recent systemd journal entries, for example:
sudo systemctl status docker
sudo journalctl -u docker --no-pager -n 100Look for configuration syntax errors, storage or filesystem failures, missing runtime components, and permission problems. Compose cannot correct an Engine that is stopped or unhealthy.
5. Verify both Engine and Compose
Run Docker’s documented installation test:
sudo docker run hello-worldA successful result shows that the client can reach the daemon, the daemon can create a container, and the image can be retrieved and executed. Then verify that the CLI can discover the Compose plugin:

docker compose versionThe version command should print the installed Compose V2 version. These checks test different layers: hello-world validates the Engine path, while docker compose version validates plugin discovery by the CLI.
Install Docker Compose V2 on Fedora
1. Configure Docker’s Fedora repository
Use Docker’s Fedora-specific procedure to add the official repository and its signing configuration. Fedora repository definitions are not the same as Ubuntu or Debian APT definitions, so do not paste an APT key or suite block into a Fedora system.
2. Install the package set with DNF
Install the Engine, CLI, runtime, Buildx, and Compose plugin together:
sudo dnf install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-pluginDNF may show dependency changes or a package-key confirmation. Review those prompts and ensure the packages come from the repository you intentionally configured.
3. Enable and start Docker immediately
Fedora’s documented procedure uses one command to start Docker now and enable it at boot:
sudo systemctl enable --now dockerConfirm the daemon and run the Engine test:
sudo systemctl status docker
sudo docker run hello-worldFinally, confirm the Compose plugin:
docker compose versionIf the daemon is active but the version command cannot find Compose, troubleshoot plugin installation and CLI discovery separately from service startup.
Optional: run Docker without typing sudo
By default, Docker’s daemon binds to a Unix socket owned by root. That is why the verification command is commonly written as sudo docker run hello-world. You can follow Docker’s optional post-installation procedure to configure a docker group and add selected administrators to it.

Group membership grants broad control over the Docker daemon. A user who can access the Docker socket can generally create containers with powerful host access, so treat membership as an administrative privilege, not a convenience permission. Limit it to trusted operators, apply the group change deliberately, and start a new login session before expecting the new membership to take effect.
If you do not need passwordless Docker commands, continue using sudo. It makes the privileged boundary visible and avoids expanding access to the daemon socket.
Manual Compose plugin installation
Use the manual route only when repository installation is unavailable or when you have a specific reason to control the plugin binary independently of the operating system packages. Docker’s manual instructions require you to select a Compose release from Docker’s documented release instructions, download the binary into the Docker CLI plugin directory, make it executable, and verify it.
- Confirm that Docker Engine and the Docker CLI are already installed and working. A manual Compose binary cannot replace either prerequisite.
- Select the release appropriate for your architecture from Docker’s official release guidance. Do not assume that a binary built for one architecture will run on another.
- Place the downloaded plugin in the CLI plugin directory specified by Docker’s manual installation instructions for your installation scope.
- Set the executable permission on the plugin file.
- Run
docker compose versionand confirm that the selected release is reported.
Record the release and checksum in your deployment notes if reproducibility matters. Manual installation transfers update responsibility to you: monitor releases, replace the binary deliberately, and retain a known-good copy if you need a quick rollback. Repository installation remains preferable for most long-lived VPS systems because package updates and dependency handling are integrated with the operating system.

Why docker compose says “command not found”
The Compose package is missing
On Ubuntu or Debian, check that docker-compose-plugin was included in the installation:
sudo apt install docker-compose-pluginOn Fedora, install the same package name through DNF:
sudo dnf install docker-compose-pluginThen retry:
docker compose versionThe plugin is outside the CLI’s expected directory
A manually downloaded binary must be in the Docker CLI plugin directory expected by your installation and must have executable permissions. Recheck the directory and permissions against Docker’s manual plugin instructions. A file with the right name in an arbitrary directory will not automatically become a Docker subcommand.
The wrong command is being used
Compose V2 is invoked with a space:
docker compose up -dDo not substitute the legacy hyphenated form when following V2 instructions. Scripts written for the older standalone command may need updating to the V2 syntax and behavior.

This error means the client reached the Unix socket but the current user lacks permission to open it. The default root ownership is intentional. Choose one of these responses:
- Run the command with
sudo, such assudo docker compose up -d. - Follow Docker’s optional docker-group procedure, then limit group membership to trusted administrators because it grants broad daemon control.
Do not “fix” the error by making the socket world-writable. That would expose the Docker daemon to every local user and undermine the host’s privilege boundary.
When the Docker daemon is inactive
Compose is a client feature; it cannot start a stopped Engine. Check the service:
sudo systemctl status dockerStart it if necessary:
sudo systemctl start dockerIf it exits again, inspect the service journal before changing Compose files:

This order separates host, runtime, and project problems instead of treating every failure as a YAML or plugin issue.
Installation checks for a production VPS
- Confirm the operating system and release with
cat /etc/os-release. - Confirm the package architecture with
dpkg --print-architectureon Debian-family systems. - Remove or account for conflicting unofficial packages before installing Docker’s packages.
- Use the repository block intended for the exact Ubuntu or Debian release, or the Fedora repository procedure for Fedora.
- Install
docker-ce,docker-ce-cli,containerd.io,docker-buildx-plugin, anddocker-compose-plugintogether. - Check
systemctl status dockerand start the service only when inactive. - Run
sudo docker run hello-worldto test Engine operation. - Run
docker compose versionto test plugin discovery. - Decide explicitly whether administrators will use
sudoor the privileged docker group. - Document a pinned Compose release only if your deployment requires reproducibility; otherwise allow the configured repository to manage updates.
Using Compose after installation
Once both verification commands succeed, Compose commands use the Docker CLI namespace. For example, a project can be started in detached mode with:
docker compose up -dThe command must be run from the directory containing the project’s Compose configuration, unless you deliberately provide a different project-file path through the Compose command’s documented options. Installation itself does not validate application configuration, image availability, published ports, volumes, secrets, or environment variables; those are separate project concerns.
Keep the installation layers distinct when diagnosing a failure. A missing subcommand points to package or plugin discovery. A permission error points to access to the daemon socket. A daemon-inactive error points to systemd or Engine startup. Only after those layers pass should you debug the Compose application definition.
