What you need before installing Coolify
Coolify is a self-hosted deployment platform that runs on a Linux server and manages applications, databases, Docker images, volumes, and connected deployment servers. A VPS is the normal starting point because it provides a persistent public server that you control. The server must be reachable over SSH and have enough spare capacity for both Coolify and everything you plan to run.

Minimum server resources
Coolify’s current project documentation lists this minimum for the Coolify installation itself:

The quoted minimum is a starting point, not a sizing recommendation for a busy production host. A small test deployment may fit close to the minimum. Multiple services, image-heavy builds, or databases can exhaust memory or disk even when Coolify itself installed successfully. Check resource graphs and Docker storage regularly, and resize or split workloads before the host begins swapping or rejecting writes.

Supported operating systems and architecture
Choose a fresh server image and confirm that it is 64-bit amd64 or arm64. Coolify documentation lists Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat-family distributions, SUSE, Arch, Alpine, and 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS among its supported options. Some distributions and non-LTS Ubuntu releases require manual installation rather than the automated path, so verify the current support status for the exact image you select.
A fresh VPS is preferable to a host already running important containers. Coolify’s server validation can install Docker and restart the Docker service while checking a connected server. That restart can interrupt existing workloads.
Network and account prerequisites
- A public IPv4 address, a reachable IPv6 address, or a hostname that resolves to the server.
- An SSH port reachable from your workstation; port 22 is common, but your provider may use another port.
- An SSH key installed for the account you will use. Test the key before starting the installer.
- Provider-level and host-level firewall access for SSH, the Coolify dashboard, and the ports required by deployed applications.
- A workstation browser for opening the dashboard URL printed by the installer.
Choose the VPS layout before provisioning
The simplest arrangement puts Coolify and your first applications on one server. It costs less and is easier to operate, but a heavy build, runaway container, or full disk can affect the control plane and every application on that host.

When comparing VPS providers, evaluate the region closest to users and data sources, CPU and storage performance, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, snapshots, backup controls, support quality, and total recurring cost. Prices, included transfer, and backup policies change, so verify them on the provider’s current product page before ordering.
Provision and verify the VPS
- Create the server. Select a supported Linux image, 64-bit architecture, public networking, and a disk large enough for Coolify plus your planned images, volumes, logs, and backups. Record the server address and login user.
- Add your SSH key. Upload the public key through the provider’s provisioning screen or install it in the account’s authorized keys. Do not rely on a password-only login for administration.
- Check the firewall. Permit SSH from your administration network. Also allow the dashboard and application ports you will actually use. Keep unrelated inbound ports closed.
- Test the connection. From your workstation, connect with the account and address supplied by the provider. For example, a documentation address would look like
ssh [email protected]; replace it with your real account and server address. - Confirm the host is disposable. Remove or migrate containers and services that cannot tolerate a Docker installation or restart. Coolify’s validation may change Docker configuration and restart Docker.
If the SSH test fails, fix DNS, the provider firewall, the host firewall, the username, and key authorization before attempting installation. Running the installer without a reliable recovery login can leave you unable to diagnose a failure.

Install Coolify with the official command
After logging in over SSH, run Coolify’s automated installer:

curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bashThe command downloads the current installation script from Coolify’s distribution endpoint and pipes it to Bash. The exact script and supported operating-system list are release-sensitive, so use the official command rather than copying an old one from an unrelated tutorial.
What happens during installation
- The script checks the operating system, architecture, and basic prerequisites.
- It installs or configures the Docker components Coolify needs.
- It creates the Coolify data and service structure under
/data/coolify. - It starts the Coolify services and reports progress in the terminal.
- At completion, it prints the dashboard address. Initial HTTP access commonly uses port
8000.
Keep the SSH session open while the script runs and read any error output instead of assuming that a returned shell prompt means the dashboard is ready. The installation can take time while packages and container images are downloaded.
Open the dashboard and create the first administrator
- Copy the dashboard URL printed at the end of the installer.
- Open that address in a browser from a network that can reach the VPS. If the address uses an IP and port 8000, include the port exactly as printed.
- Complete the registration form and create the first administrator account immediately.
- Store the credentials in a password manager and use a unique, strong password.
The first registrant can gain control of the Coolify instance. Do not leave the initial registration page publicly available while deciding who should administer the server, and do not postpone account creation after exposing the dashboard.
If the page does not load, verify that the VPS is running, the dashboard port is allowed in both provider and host firewalls, and the installer completed without errors. Check the terminal output and the server’s Docker services over SSH before changing ports or reinstalling.

Back up Coolify’s environment and secrets
Back up /data/coolify/source/.env as soon as the installation is working. This file contains installation secrets, including the APP_KEY needed to restore the instance. Treat the backup as sensitive: restrict its permissions, encrypt it, and store it outside the VPS. Do not paste its contents into tickets, public repositories, or chat messages.
A useful backup plan has at least two independent destinations and a documented restore procedure. A VPS snapshot alone may not protect you from accidental deletion or credential compromise, while a copied environment file without application data cannot recreate persistent services. Record where the file is stored, who can retrieve it, and which database and volume backups must be restored with it.
Complete the first configuration in Coolify
Verify the localhost server
The initial installation normally registers the VPS as the localhost server. In the dashboard, confirm that it is online and that Coolify can communicate with Docker. Review the reported CPU, memory, and storage before deploying anything substantial.
Add deployment servers when needed
For a split layout, add another server from the dashboard and provide an account whose SSH key is authorized on that machine. Coolify manages connected servers over SSH and can validate Docker and required tools. Use a dedicated deployment account with only the privileges needed for the intended workloads, and restrict its SSH exposure with firewall rules.

Add the Git provider or repository source used by your application, then select a small, disposable project for the first deployment. Keep production repositories and secrets out of this smoke test. Confirm that Coolify can fetch the source, build the image or runtime, create the container, and expose the service on the expected port.

Deploy a test application
- Create a project and resource in the dashboard.
- Choose the connected Git source and the branch or revision to deploy.
- Set the application’s build and runtime configuration, including required environment variables.
- Deploy and watch the build and runtime logs.
- Open the generated service address and verify that the application responds.
- Stop or remove the test resource if it is no longer needed, then repeat with a production-like service only after backups and access controls are ready.
This test separates installation problems from application problems. If the test cannot fetch code, build, start, or respond, fix that stage before moving a larger workload.

Use a domain and HTTPS
Point a domain or subdomain at the VPS and use Coolify’s supported proxy and certificate configuration to serve the dashboard over HTTPS. Use the domain as the normal administrative address instead of leaving production administration on a bare IP and port. HTTPS protects credentials in transit and makes certificate renewal manageable through a stable hostname.
Keep the initial IP-based URL available only as a temporary setup path. Once the domain works, update bookmarks, documentation, monitoring checks, and team access procedures to use the HTTPS address.
Reduce network exposure
- Allow SSH only from trusted administration networks where practical.
- Keep key-based SSH access and disable password login after confirming that every administrator has a working key and a recovery path.
- Open only the web, dashboard, and application ports that are required.
- Do not expose database ports directly to the internet unless a specific architecture requires it and additional access controls are in place.
- Review both the VPS provider firewall and the operating-system firewall; a rule in one layer does not automatically override the other.
Protect credentials and access
Use unique administrator credentials, remove unneeded accounts, and limit who can administer the instance. Store SSH private keys and the Coolify environment backup separately from ordinary project files. Rotate credentials when a team member leaves or a key may have been exposed. Document an emergency access route that does not depend on the dashboard being available.
Back up data and test restoration
Schedule backups for databases and persistent volumes, not just application source code. Include the Coolify environment file and any provider-level snapshots in the plan. Perform a restoration test on a separate or disposable server so you know the backup contains usable data and the required secrets. Write down the order: provision a supported host, restore the Coolify environment and data, reconnect servers, then validate applications.
Monitor capacity and updates
Watch CPU, memory, disk utilization, Docker image growth, container restarts, and backup success. Alert before disk space reaches zero; a full filesystem can prevent deployments, logging, and database writes. Remove unused images and stopped resources according to a policy that does not delete required volumes. Keep an upgrade and rollback procedure, and recheck the installer URL and supported-distribution guidance when Coolify releases change.
Common installation problems and recovery paths
The installer exits before completion
- Confirm the distribution and release are supported by the current Coolify documentation.
- Check that the host is 64-bit
amd64orarm64and meets the minimum CPU, RAM, and free-disk requirements. - Verify that outbound networking and DNS work so packages and images can be downloaded.
- Read the last error in the SSH terminal, correct that prerequisite, and rerun the official command rather than mixing instructions from a different release.
SSH authentication fails
Use the provider console to confirm the username, authorized public key, and SSH port. Check that the local client is offering the intended private key and that a firewall permits the connection. Do not continue with installation until you can log in reliably and have a second recovery method.
The dashboard is unreachable
Confirm that the VPS is powered on, the installer reached its completion message, and the dashboard port shown by the script is allowed through both firewall layers. Test the address from a second network to distinguish local routing problems from a server problem. If the service stopped, inspect Docker and Coolify status from SSH and read the service logs before deleting data or reinstalling.
Docker validation disrupts an existing service
Coolify’s validation may install Docker or restart it. If a pre-existing workload was interrupted, recover it using the host’s documented service procedure, then move the workload to a dedicated deployment server or rebuild the VPS from a clean image. Do not treat a shared, already-important Docker host as an installation target without a tested maintenance window.
A deployment fails after installation
Classify the failure by stage: source authentication, dependency installation, image build, container startup, routing, or application configuration. Check the corresponding Coolify logs, verify required environment variables, confirm that the process listens on the configured port, and ensure the server has memory and disk headroom. A successful Coolify installation does not guarantee that an application’s build or runtime assumptions are correct.
The server runs out of disk or memory
Identify whether images, build caches, logs, database files, or persistent volumes are responsible. Preserve databases and required volumes before cleanup. Remove only resources you can recreate, then increase the VPS capacity or move workloads to additional servers. Repeated exhaustion is an architecture problem, not something a reinstall permanently fixes.
A practical installation checklist
- Supported Linux image selected; architecture confirmed as
amd64orarm64. - At least 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB free disk available for Coolify itself.
- Additional capacity reserved for builds, images, databases, volumes, logs, and backups.
- Public address or hostname recorded; SSH key installed and tested.
- Provider and host firewalls configured for SSH and only the required service ports.
- Official installer completed:

/data/coolify/source/.envbacked up securely, including the installation secrets it contains.- Localhost server verified; additional deployment servers connected only when necessary.
- Git source connected and a small test application deployed successfully.
- Production domain configured with HTTPS and temporary IP-based administration retired.
- Database and volume backups scheduled, restoration tested, and capacity monitoring enabled.
When one VPS is no longer enough
Move beyond the single-host layout when builds regularly consume the control plane’s memory, databases need independent storage and backup policies, applications require fault isolation, or a maintenance event on one service must not affect all others. Add deployment servers through SSH, assign workloads deliberately, and document which server owns each database, volume, backup, and domain. The operational cost is higher, but the boundary makes failures easier to contain and capacity easier to reason about.
