You can install Anthropic’s official Claude Desktop app on Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 using Anthropic’s apt repository. Anthropic recommends this route because it delivers app updates through apt. A downloaded .deb is an alternative, but it does not by itself enroll the app in repository-based updates.
Check Ubuntu version, architecture, and Linux availability
Anthropic’s documented Linux minimum is Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and its supported architectures are x64 and arm64. Ubuntu 24.04 meets that stated minimum. Ubuntu 26.04 also falls within the “Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer” requirement, although Anthropic does not separately list Ubuntu 26.04 by name.

Claude Desktop for Linux is in beta. Anthropic’s current download information says Chat is available on all plans; Claude Code and Cowork are available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Computer Use and Dictation are not available on Linux. Quick Entry works on X11; on native Wayland it requires support from the desktop’s GlobalShortcuts portal.

Alternative: install the downloaded .deb package
Use this route if adding the repository is not practical. Download the Linux .deb from Anthropic’s download page and select the package matching your machine’s architecture: x64 or arm64. From a terminal, install the downloaded file. Anthropic’s x64 example is:
sudo apt install ~/Downloads/claude-desktop_amd64.deb
The example filename is not universal: replace it with the actual downloaded filename, including the arm64 package name if that is your architecture. Installing a standalone .deb does not, by itself, configure regular repository-based updates. To receive updates through apt, use the repository installation method or configure Anthropic’s apt repository.
Optional: check the repository signing key
If you want to inspect the downloaded key, run:
gpg --show-keys /usr/share/keyrings/claude-desktop-archive-keyring.asc
Compare the displayed fingerprint with Anthropic’s documented fingerprint: 31DD DE24 DDFA B679 F42D 7BD2 BAA9 29FF 1A7E CACE.

Which installation method should you choose?
| Method | Best suited to | Update setup | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic apt repository | Most installations; this is Anthropic’s recommended route. | Updates arrive through normal apt package updates after repository setup. | Use the documented repository and signing-key commands. |
Downloaded .deb |
A fallback when adding the repository is not practical. | A standalone download does not by itself configure repository-based updates. | Choose the package for x64 or arm64 and use its exact downloaded filename. |
