Yes—but only some MacBooks are suitable, and the deciding factor is the exact model identifier, not simply whether the computer is called a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Google’s current certified-model list is model-specific, warns that most newer Macs are unsupported, and changes over time. Check your model first, create the installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive, and test from USB before committing.
A live boot leaves macOS and your files in place. A full ChromeOS Flex installation replaces the existing operating system and permanently erases local files, applications, and settings, so a verified backup and a disconnected backup drive are prerequisites—not optional precautions.

Can ChromeOS Flex run on your MacBook?
ChromeOS Flex is intended for Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible computers with at least 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, and the ability to boot from USB. Those generic requirements do not make every Mac compatible. Apple has sold many visually similar models with different processors, firmware, cameras, graphics and storage controllers, so Google evaluates them by model identifier.

If the summary does not show the identifier, open System Information and look for Model Identifier. Compare that exact identifier—not just the screen size or marketing name—with Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified models list. The list accessed for this guide was last updated September 2, 2026; check it again immediately before installation because certification status and end dates are time-sensitive.

Google’s certification page explains what certification means and what the listed guarantees cover; it does not turn an unlisted Mac into a supported one. On non-certified hardware, basic functions may work, but Google does not promise the same compatibility or support. The official non-certified-device guidance is blunt: ChromeOS Flex does not support most of the newer Mac models.
Read the statement in context at Google’s non-certified-device guidance.
Google lists Intel and AMD x86-64 systems as the supported architecture target. Apple Silicon is not included in that architecture requirement, so do not assume an M-series Mac can run Flex merely because it is a Mac. A newer Intel Mac can still be outside Google’s certified list, while an older listed model can have a specific defect such as the webcam limitation above.
Minimum hardware and access checks
Use this checklist before downloading anything. Each item is a gate: failing one means you should stop and investigate rather than hoping the installer will compensate.
| Check | Minimum or condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Processor architecture | Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible hardware | The generic requirement does not certify a particular Mac. Apple Silicon is not listed in Google’s supported architecture description. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | This is Google’s minimum, not a performance recommendation. More memory can make browser-heavy work more comfortable, but no higher figure is promised by the installation documentation. |
| Internal storage | 16 GB | Check the Mac’s internal drive capacity, not the size of the installer USB. Full installation uses the internal drive and removes its existing contents. |
| USB boot | The Mac must be able to start from external USB media | If the USB never appears in the boot picker, troubleshoot the media, port and firmware before attempting installation. |
| Administrator control | Ability to change required firmware or boot settings | Google’s preparation guidance notes that full administrator access to BIOS may be needed on some computers. Macs use Apple firmware rather than a conventional PC BIOS, but you still need control of the machine and its startup process. |
Certified status is more useful than the minimum specification alone because Google has assessed the particular model and records known limitations. If your identifier is absent or decertified, treat the project as an experiment: test live from USB, keep a recovery plan for macOS, and do not rely on the machine for work until every essential function has been checked.

What to prepare before creating the installer
Make and verify a backup
Copy documents, photos, browser data, application files and anything else you cannot replace to cloud storage or a separate drive. Open a few of the copied files or otherwise verify that the backup is usable. Google states that a full installation erases the existing operating system, applications, settings and files, and that erased data cannot be recovered even if the installation does not succeed. Disconnect backup and other storage drives before you start so the installer cannot select the wrong disk.
Use a dedicated USB drive
The installer requires a USB drive of at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases the entire selected drive, so use one with no needed files. A generic 16 GB flash drive provides extra room, but it is not a tested or endorsed model and its contents will still be destroyed during creation. If the Mac has only USB-C ports, use an adapter or hub only when your particular ports require one; Google’s instructions do not establish a universal adapter requirement.
Choose the computer that will create the media
The computer used to make the installer does not have to be the Mac that will receive ChromeOS Flex. Google recommends the Chromebook Recovery Utility when Chrome is available on a Mac, Windows computer or Chromebook. Google also documents downloading the ChromeOS Flex image and writing it with a third-party utility. Whichever route you choose, confirm the target drive carefully before writing because the utility reformats it.

Create the ChromeOS Flex USB installer
- Gather the USB and a working computer. Confirm that the drive is 8 GB or larger and that anything important on it has been copied elsewhere.
- Use Chromebook Recovery Utility or Google’s image-writing method. Install or open the Recovery Utility in Chrome, or download the official Flex image and use a suitable image-writing program as described in Google’s USB installer instructions.
- Select ChromeOS Flex as the operating system. Follow the utility’s prompts to choose the ChromeOS Flex download, then select the correct removable drive. Compare the drive’s name and capacity with the USB you plugged in; do not guess if several drives are connected.
- Approve the erase and write operation. The utility formats the USB and writes the installer. Wait for verification to finish rather than removing the drive when the progress bar appears complete.
- Eject the USB cleanly. Close the utility and eject the drive from the creating computer. Keep it connected only when you are ready to boot the Mac.
If creation fails, try another USB drive, another port and a fresh download. A drive that is barely functional may appear in the utility but fail when the Mac reads it, so do not use a questionable drive for a destructive installation.

Boot a MacBook from the ChromeOS Flex USB
Google’s Apple-specific boot sequence is short but timing matters. Use the official boot-device instructions if your keyboard or model behaves differently.
- Shut the Mac down completely. Do not merely close the lid or choose Restart.
- Insert the installer USB. Connect it directly when possible, or through the adapter required by your Mac’s ports.
- Press the power button and immediately hold Option. The Option key is next to Command. Keep holding it until the startup manager displays available boot choices.
- Select the USB installer. Use the arrow keys or trackpad as offered by the startup manager, then press Return or click the selected external volume.
- Wait for the ChromeOS Flex startup screen. If the Mac returns to macOS, shut down and repeat the sequence; selecting the internal disk instead of the USB is an easy mistake.
Test with live boot before installing
Choose the option to try or run ChromeOS Flex from the USB before selecting installation. Live boot is temporary: it lets you inspect the system without replacing macOS or writing the new operating system to the internal drive. Google describes it as a way to explore the experience and check whether the computer’s important hardware behaves as expected.
Test the functions that matter to you rather than stopping at the desktop:

Live mode has deliberate limits. Google says it can have performance and storage limitations and does not support automatic updates or management enrollment. It is therefore a compatibility check, not a long-term operating mode. Google also does not support dual boot: there is no supported arrangement in which macOS and ChromeOS Flex share the Mac’s internal drive as selectable operating systems.

Install ChromeOS Flex permanently
Proceed only after the live test passes your requirements, the backup has been verified and every backup or storage drive has been disconnected. The installer’s permanent option is destructive.
- Return to the installer’s installation choice. If you are still in live mode, use the on-screen option to begin installation.
- Read the erase warning in full. Confirm that you are selecting the Mac’s internal drive and that you accept replacement of the existing operating system and removal of its local data.
- Start the installation. Let the installer repartition and write the system. Do not interrupt power or close the lid while it is working.
- Complete the first-run prompts. When the installer reports completion, follow its shutdown or restart instruction.
- Remove the USB while the Mac is shut down. Start the computer again so it boots from its internal storage, then finish ChromeOS Flex’s setup.
The exact screens can change as Google updates the installer, but the erase confirmation is the decision point: cancelling before approval preserves macOS; approving the full install commits the internal drive to the new system.

Repeat the hardware checks you performed in live mode now that the system is installed on internal storage. Confirm that the keyboard, trackpad, display, network, sound, camera, sleep/wake behavior and the ports you need still work. Compare any failure with the notes for your exact certified-model entry; a documented webcam limitation is different from an installation error.

Troubleshoot a Mac that will not boot the USB
The USB does not appear in the Option startup picker
- Shut down fully and repeat the power-on-and-hold-Option sequence.
- Try a different USB port, especially if the current port is connected through a hub.
- Recreate the installer on the same or another 8 GB-or-larger drive. A failed write or defective flash drive can prevent detection.
- Check the drive on the computer that created it and eject it properly before trying again.
- For non-certified hardware, review Google’s USB-boot and device-specific guidance at the non-certified installation page. Google recommends verifying USB-boot settings where they apply.
The Mac takes a very long time to start
Google’s installation-failure guidance mentions resetting the boot device or clearing logic-board RAM for Mac-specific long boot delays. These are firmware-level procedures, so identify the exact Mac model and follow the model-specific instructions rather than applying a random key combination.
Be particularly careful with NVRAM advice. Google cautions against resetting NVRAM on some very old models, including MacBook 2,1, MacBook 3,1 and MacBook 4,1. Read Google’s troubleshooting page before attempting any reset, and stop if the procedure does not clearly match your Mac.
The installer starts but a device does not work
First distinguish live-mode limitations from a permanent-install problem. Test again after installation, consult the certified-model notes and try the simplest connection—built-in hardware or a directly attached peripheral—before adding docks and hubs. If the model is not certified, there may be no Google-supported fix for a missing camera, unusual graphics behavior or a particular wireless chipset.

Quick Recap
A practical go/no-go decision
| Your situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model is currently certified, meets the architecture and minimums, and live boot passes your tests | Proceed if you have a verified backup and accept the erase | This is the scenario Google’s certification is intended to cover, subject to the model’s notes and end date. |
| Exact model is certified but has a limitation such as a non-working webcam | Proceed only if that limitation is acceptable | Certification does not mean every component works; the limitation is part of the decision. |
| Model is decertified or absent, but live boot works | Use it only if you can tolerate unsupported behavior and maintain a recovery plan | Live success is not a certification or a promise of future updates and hardware support. |
| Mac uses an architecture outside Google’s listed Intel/AMD x86-64 target, or cannot USB-boot | Do not attempt a permanent installation | The documented prerequisites are not met, so the risk of an unusable machine is high. |
| You cannot verify a backup or need macOS and ChromeOS Flex together | Stop | Full installation erases local data, and Google does not support dual boot. |
Final pre-install checklist
- Recorded the complete Mac model identifier.
- Compared that identifier with Google’s certified-model list and read its status, end date and limitation notes.
- Confirmed Intel or AMD x86-64 compatibility, at least 4 GB RAM, at least 16 GB internal storage and USB-boot capability.
- Created the installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive that contains nothing important.
- Verified a backup and disconnected every backup or external storage drive.
- Booted live from USB and tested the hardware and services you actually need.
- Accepted that permanent installation removes the existing macOS installation and local data, with no supported dual-boot arrangement.
