What the aerynOS installer currently offers
The aerynOS download page describes the GNOME Edition as a vehicle for the alpha lichen live installer. During installation, lichen can install GNOME, KDE Plasma, COSMIC, or a Terminal Only system. Budgie is not among the listed choices. The installer retrieves packages from the repository at installation time, so the available package set may change.

The project describes Terminal Only as a base for building a custom desktop experience. Its August 2025 update discusses curated package sets and customization, while a January 2026 update names MangoWC, Niri, and Sway as compositor examples. Neither establishes that Budgie is available or supported on aerynOS. See the project updates: August 2025 and January 2026.
Can you install Budgie after choosing Terminal Only?
Possibly, but the official information cited here does not establish that the required Budgie packages are in the current repositories or explain how to configure a Budgie session. A desktop environment involves more than installing a package: the packages, dependencies, session entry, and login or display-manager setup must work together. These are items to verify, not confirmed missing components.

Before installing, check current official documentation or ask aerynOS maintainers whether the repositories contain Budgie and whether they document session setup. Without that confirmation, there are no reliable aerynOS-specific package names, commands, or expected results to provide.
Safe path if you want to investigate Budgie
- Confirm support first. Check current aerynOS documentation or contact maintainers to ask about Budgie package availability, session integration, and any supported setup steps.
- Prepare installation media. Follow the official download-page instructions to create a USB installer. The project recommends a separate USB stick and Etcher or
dd; it says Ventoy is currently incompatible. No particular capacity, speed, or model is specified. - Review the installer constraints. Confirm that your PC and target disk meet the requirements below before starting.
- Select Terminal Only in lichen only if you are prepared to assemble a custom setup and have verified the Budgie steps. This option is a customization starting point, not a documented Budgie installer path.
Check these requirements before installing aerynOS
- The target PC must support x86_64-v2 and have working UEFI firmware.
- An entire disk must be reserved for aerynOS. The alpha lichen installer does not support dual boot, so do not proceed on the assumption that it will preserve an existing operating system in a dual-boot configuration.
- The installer downloads the latest repository packages at installation time; the package set can therefore change.
These are requirements and limitations for the documented general aerynOS installer route, not Budgie-specific requirements. Consult the official download page for current installation details.
