What AWStats needs before you install it
AWStats is a server-log analyzer, not a JavaScript counter. It reads requests already recorded by your web server, so it can report only what is present in those logs. You must have access to the logs for the site you want to measure and permission to run Perl from the command line, as CGI, or both. AWStats can produce dynamic CGI pages and static HTML reports.
The official setup is organized into three stages:
- Setup and configuration: install AWStats, configure the web server integration, and create a site profile.
- Processing logs: run the update command so AWStats parses the access log and writes its historical database.
- Running reports: open the CGI endpoint or generate static HTML from the updated database.
Pre-install checklist
- Administrative access to the server or a control panel that exposes the web-server log files.
- A working Perl interpreter available to the account that will run AWStats.
- The full path to the site’s access log.
- A web server log format supported by AWStats, such as Apache/NCSA combined format or IIS Extended W3C.
- A writable directory for AWStats data files, with permissions that do not expose those files publicly.
- A plan to put the CGI report behind authentication or an IP restriction.
Choose the right log and report arrangement

Stage 1: Install AWStats and configure Apache
Download and extract the distribution
Obtain the AWStats distribution from the project, extract it on the server, and identify the directory containing awstats_configure.pl. The exact installation directory is your choice; what matters is that the account running updates can read the AWStats scripts and write to the configured data directory.

Run the Apache configuration helper
From AWStats’ tools directory, run:
perl awstats_configure.plThe helper can inspect the Apache configuration and offer to make several changes. It may propose changing CustomLog from common to combined, add AWStats aliases, add a ScriptAlias, and create a profile such as awstats.mysite.conf. Review each proposed change against your server layout before accepting it, then reload Apache using the method appropriate for your operating system.
If you manage Apache configuration manually, reproduce the same outcomes: ensure the site writes a parseable combined-style log, expose the AWStats CGI and support files through the intended aliases, and create a profile for the site. Do not make the CGI directory publicly readable until authentication or an IP restriction is in place.

Locate and edit the per-site profile
Open the generated profile in a text editor. The filename normally follows the pattern awstats.mysite.conf; the value after config= in later commands is the profile name without the awstats. prefix and .conf suffix.

If the helper generated additional directives, retain them unless you have deliberately replaced their function in your own Apache configuration.

Check the logging format before the first update
Apache’s common format does not contain as much information as the combined format. The configuration helper can offer to change CustomLog to combined; accepting that change is usually the simplest path for a new installation. If you retain a custom format, set LogFormat to the corresponding AWStats format and verify that the fields required by that format are actually present in every relevant line.

Stage 2: Process the access log
After saving the profile, run the first update from the directory containing awstats.pl (or invoke that script by its full path):
perl awstats.pl -config=mysite -updateReplace mysite with the profile name created for your site. AWStats reads the profile, opens the configured LogFile, parses entries according to LogType and LogFormat, and stores the resulting history in DirData. The first run establishes the database that both CGI and static reports use.
What a successful first update tells you
- The command completes without a Perl error or a permission failure.
- The process can read the complete log path named in the profile.
- AWStats creates or updates its data files in the configured
DirDatadirectory. - The number of recognized records is plausible for the log you supplied; a zero or unexpectedly tiny total is a reason to stop and inspect the format and path before publishing a report.
Run the same update command whenever new log entries need to be incorporated. AWStats uses its historical data directory to retain information across updates, so do not delete that directory between runs unless you intentionally want to rebuild the site’s history.
Stage 3: View the visitor reports
Use the dynamic CGI report
When the Apache aliases and ScriptAlias are active, the report can be opened at:

The CGI reads the already-updated AWStats database and renders the report when requested. It does not replace the update step: if the database has not been processed, the browser cannot show current statistics.
Generate a static HTML report
For a report that can be served as an ordinary file, run:
perl awstats.pl -config=mysite -output -staticlinks > awstats.mysite.htmlThe -staticlinks option makes the generated page use links suitable for static output. Store the resulting HTML and its supporting files in a location that is not publicly accessible unless you have intentionally protected it. Generate a new file after each update when the static report needs to reflect newer log entries.
Dynamic CGI versus static HTML

Protect AWStats before exposing it
Visitor reports reveal traffic patterns, requested URLs, referrers, user-agent information, and sometimes internal naming. The project’s security guidance recommends placing awstats.pl in a web-protected realm that requires authentication. Configure the web server so only authorized users can reach the CGI endpoint, and use AWStats access parameters to restrict requests to authenticated users or approved IP ranges where appropriate.

Use filesystem permissions that allow the update process to write and the report process to read, while denying unrelated accounts and preventing direct web serving. Apply the same principle to generated static HTML and its assets: publish them only inside an authenticated area or behind an equivalent network control.

Installing AWStats with IIS
IIS uses a different log format and setup path. Configure IIS logging with the W3C fields documented for AWStats, copy the AWStats CGI files and icons to the locations used by your web server, create a site profile, and set:
LogFormat=2The remaining workflow is the same: point LogFile to the IIS log, set the site domain and aliases, choose a private DirData, run perl awstats.pl -config=mysite -update, and then use the CGI or static-output command. A profile that still has the Apache value LogFormat=1 will not correctly parse Extended W3C records.
Other supported servers and custom formats
AWStats also supports WebStar and other server formats when the profile’s LogFormat is set correctly. Start by identifying exactly which format the server writes, then choose the corresponding AWStats value and ensure that LogFile points to that format’s log. If the server uses a custom layout, do not assume that an Apache setting will work; use the format definition documented for that server and test the first update before relying on the totals.
Troubleshoot the first installation
The update says the profile cannot be found
Confirm that the profile filename follows the AWStats naming convention and that the value after -config= matches the site name in the filename. Run the command from the directory containing awstats.pl, or supply that script’s full path.
The update cannot open the log
Check the spelling and capitalization of LogFile, then verify that the account running Perl has read permission on the file and traverse permission on every parent directory. A correct filename is not sufficient if the operating system blocks access.
The report is empty or counts are implausible
Inspect a few raw log lines and compare them with the selected LogFormat. Apache combined/XLF/ELF data normally uses LogFormat=1; IIS Extended W3C uses LogFormat=2. Also confirm that the profile is reading the log for the intended virtual host rather than a different site.
The CGI URL returns a server error
Verify that Perl CGI execution is enabled for the AWStats script, that the aliases and ScriptAlias were loaded by Apache, and that the web-server account can read the AWStats files and the DirData database. Check the server’s error log for the specific permission or interpreter error before changing the profile.

Regenerate it with -staticlinks and keep the generated file together with any required AWStats support assets. If the output is moved, preserve the relative layout expected by those links and serve it from the protected location you chose.
Alternate hostnames appear as separate sites
Add every legitimate alternate name to HostAlias, then run another update. This tells AWStats which hostnames belong to the same site profile instead of treating them as unrelated names.
A repeatable operating procedure
- Confirm that the current web-server log is readable and uses the format selected in the profile.
- Run
perl awstats.pl -config=mysite -updatewith the same profile used for the initial setup. - Open the authenticated CGI report, or regenerate the static file with
-output -staticlinkswhen a file-based report is required. - Keep
DirData, CGI files, and static output protected after every configuration change.
Once the profile points to the right log, the format matches the server, and the update command completes successfully, AWStats provides a repeatable way to turn server requests into visitor reports without adding tracking code to each page.
