Use ModEngine 2.1 as a separate, offline launch path. Open Armored Core VI’s Steam installation folder, place the ModEngine files beside armoredcore.exe, put each mod’s payload in a dedicated folder such as mod, point config_armoredcore6.toml at that folder, and start the game with launchmod_armoredcore6.bat. Launching the game normally through Steam remains the unmodded path.
Back up your saves and original files first, use only a trusted signed release, check every mod’s supported game or regulation version, and never take a modded installation online.

What ModEngine changes in Armored Core 6
ModEngine 2.1 is a loader that lets Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon read mod files from a separate directory instead of forcing you to overwrite the game’s original files. For AC6, a common payload is regulation.bin, although a mod may also contain loose files. ModEngine reads the folder named in config_armoredcore6.toml and applies those files when you use its dedicated batch launcher.

The arrangement creates two distinct launch paths:
| How you start the game | What it loads | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
launchmod_armoredcore6.bat |
The files configured for ModEngine | Offline single-player sessions with your selected mods |
| Normal Steam launch | The ordinary game installation | Returning to an unmodded session |
ModEngine’s own README states that direct Steam launches produce a vanilla instance. That makes the launcher choice important: do not assume that opening AC6 from Steam will load the same files as the ModEngine batch file.

Safety checks before you install anything
Download from an authoritative source
For AC6, use the official soulsmods/ModEngine2 releases page and select the Mod Engine 2.1 release identified as adding initial Armored Core 6 support. The upstream project now marks Mod Engine 2 development as discontinued, so do not treat a random re-upload as an equivalent or newer build.
The Mod Engine safety FAQ, updated in August 2026, says the signed application should come only from the official source and warns against mirrors. A file with the expected name is not proof that it is genuine; a repacked download can contain different code.
Back up saves and original files
Copy your save data to a location outside the Armored Core VI directory before changing anything. Save locations can vary by Windows installation, so preserve the complete existing save folder rather than relying on a guessed path. Also keep a copy of the original game and configuration files outside the installation directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA backup gives you a recovery route if a mod conflicts with an update, if you accidentally edit the wrong configuration, or if you need to remove every modded file. Do not place the only backup inside the folder that you are about to modify.
Plan for offline use
ModEngine’s support FAQ describes the tool as being for single-player, offline games only. Do not enter multiplayer, competitive modes, or any online service while the modded launcher or modded files are active. If you want to play online, close the modded session and start AC6 normally through Steam after restoring any files that a particular mod required you to replace.
Check the mod’s version and file instructions
Read the mod author’s documentation before copying files. AC6 mods can depend on a particular regulation version, and a game update can make an otherwise correct installation stop working. One documented example includes two alternative regulation.bin files and instructs users to use only one. Never copy both alternatives simply because they are present in the download.

- Confirm which AC6 game or regulation version the mod supports.
- Determine whether the mod supplies
regulation.bin, loose files, or both. - Check whether the author requires a specific folder name or launcher.
- Look for instructions about compatibility with other regulation-based mods.
Prepare the Armored Core VI folder
Open the correct directory in Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Open the
Gamedirectory. This is the folder that containsarmoredcore.exe. A typical Steam location ends withARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICONinin some installations, but the reliable check is the executable itself: use the directory in which
ealtimearmoredcore.exeis visible and follow the AC6 ModEngine documentation for your installation.
Do not extract ModEngine into a parent Steam library folder, the desktop, or an extra directory below the game folder. The loader files need to sit beside the AC6 executable used by the installation.
Keep a clean folder layout
After extraction, the important relationship should look like this:
Game
├─ armoredcore.exe
├─ config_armoredcore6.toml
├─ launchmod_armoredcore6.bat
├─ modengine2.dll (name may vary by release)
└─ mod
└─ regulation.bin (if supplied by the mod)
The exact set of ModEngine files can vary by release. The critical points are that the extracted files are not hidden one level deeper than intended, the configuration file is available in the game directory, and the configured mod folder is below that directory.
Install ModEngine 2.1
- Download the latest available AC6-capable Mod Engine 2.1 archive from the authoritative soulsmods/ModEngine2 releases page.
- Before opening the archive, confirm that it came from the expected official source. If Windows or antivirus software reports a generic heuristic detection, verify the source and the file’s signature rather than installing a mirror copy.
- Extract the archive’s contents directly into the AC6
Gamefolder—the folder containingarmoredcore.exe. - If Windows creates a new directory named after the archive, open that directory and move its contents up one level if necessary. You should be able to see
config_armoredcore6.tomlandlaunchmod_armoredcore6.batin the same working area as the game executable. - Do not overwrite unrelated original game files. ModEngine’s intended workflow is to add a named mod directory and configure the loader to read it.
If the archive contains an included mod folder, keep that folder. If it does not, create one in the same directory as the configuration file and launcher.
Put an AC6 mod in its own folder
Use the default mod directory
Create or use a folder named mod beside config_armoredcore6.toml. Extract the mod payload into that folder. For a mod that supplies a regulation file, the result should normally be:
Gamemodregulation.bin
Do not add an unnecessary nested folder. A frequent mistake is ending up with GamemodModNameregulation.bin when the configuration points to mod and the loader expects the payload at the folder’s root.
Rank #3
- Turn on and burn all
Separate unrelated mods
Use a clearly named subfolder when you need to keep multiple setups, for example mod-build-a and mod-build-b. Then change the configuration to point to the setup you want to test. Keeping separate folders makes it easier to disable a mod without deleting files and reduces the chance of mixing two incompatible packages.
A folder is not a compatibility layer. If two mods contain the same file, especially regulation.bin, ModEngine does not automatically merge their contents. The effective result is determined by file priority, so adding both can silently disable one mod or produce a crash.
Configure config_armoredcore6.toml
- Right-click
config_armoredcore6.tomland open it in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. - Find the
modsentry. - For the standard folder, make it resemble:
mods = [
{ enabled = true, name = "default", path = "mod" }
]
- Save the file as plain text. Ensure the editor did not add a second extension such as
.txt. - If your payload is in a different folder, replace only the
pathvalue with that folder’s relative name. For example, a directory namedmod-build-awould usepath = "mod-build-a".
The path is interpreted relative to the game directory. A configuration that points to mod will not find files stored in a differently named directory, and changing the folder name without changing the TOML entry leaves the game effectively unmodded.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For reference, the ModEngine configuration format used for file-priority behavior is documented in the project’s configuration example: soulsmods/ModEngine2 configuration example. The game-specific file remains config_armoredcore6.toml; do not replace it with an Elden Ring configuration.
Launch the modded game
- Leave Steam running and signed in, but do not start AC6 through the normal Play button.
- Open the AC6
Gamefolder. - Double-click
launchmod_armoredcore6.bat. - Wait for the game to start, then verify the mod’s expected change in an offline single-player save.
If the batch file opens a command window briefly and the game does not appear, do not repeatedly launch it while guessing. Work through the folder, configuration, and compatibility checks below first.
Return to a vanilla session
Close the modded game completely. Then launch Armored Core VI normally from Steam. ModEngine’s README specifies that a direct Steam launch creates a vanilla instance, so this is the simplest way to switch back when your installation has only added files to the separate mod folder.

Why two regulation files are risky
regulation.bin is a single file path. Two packages that each provide that path cannot both occupy it as independent versions in one effective load order. ModEngine2 does not resolve the underlying data conflict; the file with the highest priority wins.
Use one compatible regulation file, or follow a mod author’s instructions for a dedicated merge or patch tool. Do not assume that placing two copies in separate folders creates a combined build. If you need two alternatives, keep them in separate folders and change the configured path between sessions.
A practical compatibility matrix
| Question | Safer answer | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
Do both mods replace regulation.bin? |
Use a documented merge, or test one at a time. | Both packages include a file with the same name and no compatibility note. |
| Does one mod add only loose files? | It may coexist, provided its documentation says the paths do not overlap. | It changes files or folders already supplied by the other mod. |
| Do the mods target the same AC6/regulation version? | Follow the author’s stated version requirements. | One package predates a game patch or names a different regulation version. |
| Do both require different launchers or configurations? | Use separate configured folders and test independently. | Instructions tell you to overwrite ModEngine files from another package. |
Troubleshoot a mod that does not work
The game starts but nothing changes
- Open the folder again and confirm that ModEngine was not extracted one level too deep.
- Verify that
config_armoredcore6.tomlpoints to the folder that actually contains the payload. - Check the payload’s depth. If the configuration points to
mod, inspect whether the file is inGamemodrather thanGamemodAnotherFolder. - Confirm that you launched
launchmod_armoredcore6.bat, not the ordinary Steam shortcut. - Re-read the mod’s documentation for a required regulation version or a choice between alternative files.
The game crashes or fails to load after adding another mod
Remove the newest addition from the configured folder and test the previous working setup. If the crash disappears, the likely issue is a conflicting file or incompatible version. In particular, check whether both packages provide regulation.bin. ModEngine does not merge those files; use one compatible file or a documented merge/patch process.
An update broke the installation
After every AC6 patch, check the mod’s documentation and the ModEngine release page for an updated compatibility note. A game update can change the regulation data that a mod expects. Because the upstream ModEngine 2 project is discontinued, a future fix may come from successor tooling or from the mod author rather than from a new ModEngine 2 build.

Heuristic scanners can flag memory-modification tools even when a signed build is legitimate. First verify that the archive came from the authoritative source and that the application is signed. Do not create an exception for an unsigned copy from a mirror simply because its filename matches the expected release. If the source or signature cannot be verified, delete the file and obtain a known-good release instead.
Best Value
The batch file does not launch the game
- Make sure Steam is open.
- Confirm that the batch file and configuration are in the AC6
Gamefolder. - Check that
armoredcore.exeis in the same folder used for the installation. - Open the TOML file and correct any accidental quote, bracket, or path edits.
- Temporarily move the mod payload out of the configured folder and test the loader with an otherwise clean setup.
Keep the setup maintainable
Use a repeatable folder strategy
Keep one folder for each known-working setup and record which regulation version it uses. A simple arrangement such as mod-vanilla-test, mod-build-a, and mod-build-b lets you change the TOML path without repeatedly extracting archives over one another.
Keep original files untouched where possible
The ModEngine workflow is designed around a named mod directory. Avoid copying a mod directly over the original game files unless its documentation explicitly requires that method. Separate folders make rollback faster and reduce the risk of taking altered files into an online session.
Recheck after every change
Install and test one mod at a time. Once a setup works offline, make a backup of the working configuration and note the folder contents. If a later change causes a failure, you can return to the last known-good state instead of troubleshooting several unknown changes at once.

Mod Engine 2.1 is the AC6-capable release described in the soulsmods release notes. The upstream README now says, “Development on Mod Engine 2 is discontinued. Any future work will be done on me3.” That status does not prevent an existing 2.1 installation from working with a compatible game and mod, but it does mean that long-term compatibility should be checked with mod authors and any successor tooling they identify.
For that reason, treat a working installation as version-specific rather than permanent. Keep the original files and saves backed up, note the AC6 patch level, and expect to revisit compatibility after updates.
Quick pre-launch checklist
- ModEngine 2.1 came from the authoritative soulsmods/ModEngine2 release source.
- The extracted files sit beside
armoredcore.exein the AC6Gamefolder. - Your save data and original configuration or game files are backed up outside that folder.
- The mod payload is inside the folder named by
config_armoredcore6.toml. - Only the intended
regulation.binis present for this setup. - The mod supports your current AC6 or regulation version.
- You are launching with
launchmod_armoredcore6.bat. - The session will remain offline and single-player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install several Armored Core 6 mods in one ModEngine setup?
Only when their documentation confirms that their files can coexist. Two mods that provide regulation.bin conflict because ModEngine2 does not merge that file; use one compatible regulation file, a documented merge tool, or separate configured folders.
Will launching AC6 from Steam load my mods?
No. Normal Steam launching remains the vanilla path described by ModEngine’s README. Use launchmod_armoredcore6.bat for the configured modded session.
Is ModEngine safe to use online?
No. The Mod Engine safety FAQ describes it as an offline, single-player tool. Do not enter multiplayer or competitive services with the modded launcher or altered files.
What should I do if an antivirus program blocks ModEngine?
Verify that the download came from the authoritative source and that the binary is signed. A generic heuristic warning can occur with memory-modification tools, but an unsigned mirror copy should not be trusted or exempted.
