First check the model: APK sideloading works on compatible Fire TV Sticks running Android-based Fire OS, but not on Vega OS devices. On a compatible model, the simplest route is to install Downloader, allow it to install unknown apps, and use it to open a legitimate APK. If your device uses Vega OS or its product listing says sideloading is blocked, these Android APK steps will not work.
Check whether your Fire TV Stick supports APK installation
“Fire TV Stick” does not identify one operating system. Some models run Android-based Fire OS; Amazon has also introduced Vega OS devices that can run Amazon-approved apps but do not accept ordinary Android APKs. Recent reporting identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the new Fire TV Stick HD as models that block Android-app sideloading. Check the exact model and software rather than assuming every Stick is compatible. See Amazon’s Fire TV developer information and reporting from Ars Technica and TechRadar.
- Open Settings.
- Select My Fire TV, Device & Software, or Device, depending on the model.
- Open About and note the exact device name and software information.
- If it is a Vega OS model, or its product information explicitly says it prevents sideloading, stop here. Downloader, ADB, and developer settings cannot turn Vega OS into Android-based Fire OS.
Sideloading means installing an app package from outside the Amazon Appstore, usually an Android application package (.apk). It is not rooting or jailbreaking, does not grant administrative access, and cannot make an incompatible app work. Amazon describes the process in its Fire TV app installation documentation.
What you need
- A compatible Android-based Fire TV Stick, internet access, and enough free internal storage.
- Downloader or another installer that can retrieve and open APK files.
- A trustworthy APK that is compatible with the device’s processor, Fire OS version, and TV interface.
- For the computer method: a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, Android SDK Platform-Tools, the Fire TV’s local IP address, and both devices on the same network for wireless ADB.
Amazon warns that storage constraints can prevent installation or affect the experience; Fire TV Stick models should not be assumed to offer an SD-card installation route. See Amazon’s storage and installation-location guidance.

Enable Developer Options
Menu names vary across Fire OS versions. On software that hides Developer Options, Amazon’s documented method is to reveal it by selecting the device name repeatedly:
- Open Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About.
- Highlight the device name and press the remote’s center/select button seven times.
- Return to the previous screen and open Developer Options, if available.
If those controls are absent, confirm the model and operating system; the expected Android developer controls may not exist on a Vega OS device. Amazon documents the seven-press procedure and related settings in its ADB connection guide.
Install Downloader and permit it to install apps
Get the genuine Downloader app
- Go to the Fire TV home screen and choose Find or the search icon.
- Search for Downloader. If it appears in the Amazon Appstore, check that the developer is AFTVnews, then choose Get, Download, or Install.
Availability can vary by device, region, and time. If you cannot find it, do not install a similarly named app from an unverified source; check AFTVnews’ official Downloader page or use another trusted transfer and installation method.

Grant the installer permission
- Open Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > Developer Options.
- Choose Install Unknown Apps, select Downloader, and set it to On.
Older Fire OS software may instead show a global Apps from Unknown Sources toggle. The current per-app permission controls which installer may install packages. ADB Debugging is separate and is not needed for Downloader; it is needed for installation from a computer. Amazon documents the setting variations in its connection guide.

- Open Downloader and enter the direct APK download address or navigate to the developer’s official download page.
- Download the APK. Make sure the download is the actual APK file, not an HTML error page or an unrelated installer.
- When Fire TV displays the installation prompt, choose Install.
- When installation finishes, choose Done, then choose Delete to remove the downloaded APK and confirm if prompted.
Use a developer’s official Android TV or Fire TV release where available. Do not use arbitrary short codes or download links from unknown sources. Amazon’s installation guide describes launching installed apps through Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
Find and open the installed app
Look in the home screen’s Apps row, Your Apps & Channels, or App Library; names and placement depend on the interface. If the app is missing from the launcher, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select it, and choose Launch application. An APK may install without adding a normal TV launcher entry, particularly if it was designed for phones rather than television.

Install an APK from a computer with ADB
ADB is useful for developers, repeated installs, and APKs already on a computer. It is more involved than Downloader and is not required for the ordinary on-device method.
Prepare the Fire TV and computer
- On Fire TV, open Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > Developer Options, then enable ADB Debugging.
- Find the device IP address under Settings > My Fire TV/Device & Software > About > Network.
- Install Android SDK Platform-Tools from Google’s official Platform-Tools page. Amazon also explains the setup in its Fire TV ADB guide.
Connect and install
In Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell, substitute the Fire TV’s IP address. Port 5555 is a common example; the port can vary by software or connection method (Amazon describes ports in the 5555–5585 range).

adb install /path/to/app.apk
Windows example:
adb install "C:UsersNameDownloadsapp.apk"
macOS or Linux example:
./adb install "/Users/name/Downloads/app.apk"
A successful install returns Success. To reinstall an existing package while retaining its user data and cache, use:
adb install -r /path/to/app.apk
An update can fail if the new APK has a different signing key from the installed app. Removing the old version may resolve that conflict, but can erase its data. Amazon documents these commands in its installation instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an APK may not work even after installation
Fire TV’s Android compatibility does not mean every Android app is a usable TV app. Amazon’s Fire TV platform overview describes the Android/AOSP context; app behavior still depends on device features and the app’s own requirements.
Best Value
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Processor architecture: The APK must support the Fire TV’s ARM or ARM64 architecture.
- Android version: An app requiring a newer Android API than the device provides may refuse to install or crash.
- TV interface and input: Phone-only apps may lack a TV launcher entry, be awkward to navigate with a remote, require touch input, or display in portrait orientation.
- Google dependencies: An app that relies on Google Play Services may not work as it would on a certified Google TV device.
- DRM, licensing, and codecs: Streaming software can install yet fail to play protected video because of DRM, certification, licensing, or codec limitations.
- Package format: A standard APK is different from .xapk, .apks, or split-APK bundles. A normal package installer may not handle those formats; renaming a bundle to .apk is not a reliable fix.
- Storage and permissions: Low free space can block installation, while requested storage, microphone, network, or other access may be unavailable or unnecessary on a TV.
Fix common installation and launch errors
“App not installed”
- Confirm that the device is Android-based Fire OS rather than Vega OS.
- Delete the file and download it again from the developer’s official source.
- Check that it is a single standard APK rather than an app bundle, and that it matches the device architecture and software requirements.
- Check available storage and close or remove unneeded apps if necessary.
- If a previous version is installed, consider uninstalling it only if losing its data is acceptable; a different signing key can prevent an in-place update.
- If the error persists, record the complete error. A Fire TV model restriction, missing dependency, or app incompatibility may be the cause.
Downloader cannot install the file
- Check Settings > Developer Options > Install Unknown Apps > Downloader and confirm it is on.
- Verify Downloader is the AFTVnews app, that the download completed, and that the file is a standard APK.
- Check free storage. If the device’s OS blocks Android APKs, there is no Downloader setting that can override that restriction.
ADB reports “unauthorized”
Approve the authorization dialog on the TV, then run adb devices again. Confirm the computer and Fire TV are on the same non-isolated network and that the IP address has not changed.
ADB cannot connect or reports “connection refused”
- Confirm ADB Debugging is enabled and recheck the IP under About > Network.
- Use the correct port for the device and connection method; 5555 is common, not universal.
- Check that both devices are on the same LAN. Guest Wi-Fi can isolate them. VPN or firewall rules can also interfere; do not expose ADB to the public internet.
If needed, restart ADB and reconnect:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb connect FIRE_TV_IP_ADDRESS:5555
The app is missing or crashes after installation
Use Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications to try launching it. If it opens and immediately closes, likely causes include unsupported Google services, Android requirements, DRM, architecture, or an assumption that touch controls or unavailable hardware are present. Look for a Fire TV or Android TV-compatible build rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same phone APK.
Install safely and respect app and content rules
- Prefer the developer’s official website, release repository, or official store listing; verify the publisher and package identity.
- Avoid cracked, “modded,” “premium unlocked,” or pirated packages. Do not enter Amazon, banking, or streaming-service credentials in an app you do not trust.
- Review requested permissions and remove apps that ask for access they do not need. Delete the APK after installation.
- After using ADB, turn off ADB Debugging. For a tighter security posture, switch off Install Unknown Apps for the installer when you are done.
- Sideloading is an installation method, not permission to access copyrighted content. Amazon’s distribution policy includes restrictions for certain apps that copy, record, download, or store protected audio or video; these are Amazon policy restrictions, not a statement of universal law. See Amazon’s Fire TV FAQ.
Uninstall a sideloaded app or use another option
To remove an app from the device, open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose the app, and select Uninstall. From a connected computer, use its package name:
adb uninstall com.example.package
If sideloading is unavailable, check whether the app has an Amazon Appstore version or a supported smart-TV, web, or casting option. Otherwise, use a streaming device whose product information confirms support for the app ecosystem you need. Rooting or jailbreaking will not make a Vega OS Fire TV Stick accept Android APKs.
