The executable launcher is the easiest route because it can obtain the required Fabric Loader and Minecraft files. A manual Fabric Installer setup is useful when a host expects separate server and library files. The procedure below covers local computers, VPS installations, and Minecraft control panels.

What must match before you install
A Fabric server is not compatible with an arbitrary collection of mod JARs. Every part of the installation describes the same software target.

Read the modpack manifest, distribution page, or included instructions and write down the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, Java requirement, and any special server notes. Do this before downloading files; otherwise it is easy to assemble a pack from several nearby versions that cannot run together.

Java requirements by Minecraft version
Fabric’s current installation guidance recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later. These ranges are version-specific recommendations, not a promise that every older Minecraft release accepts either runtime. For releases before 1.17, consult the guidance for that release and use the Java version it specifies.
Check the runtime that the server will actually use, not merely the version installed on your desktop. In a terminal, run:
java -versionOn a hosted server, the control panel’s selected Java version or startup script takes precedence. If java -version reports a different major version from the one required by the pack, select the correct runtime or replace the Java path in the startup command.
Choose the installation method
Executable Fabric Server Launcher
The Fabric Server Launcher is an executable JAR. Fabric describes it as a launcher that downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files, then continues by running the game server. This is normally the shortest and least error-prone path: one launcher file and a startup command can create the basic server installation.
Use this method when you control the machine’s file system and the host allows a custom JAR or startup command. It also makes it easier to reproduce the installation on a second machine because the launcher command records the selected versions.
Fabric Installer server setup
The Fabric Installer’s Server tab is useful when a host requires separate server files or when you want to see exactly which Minecraft and loader versions are being installed. The installer creates the server JAR and supporting files, after which you copy or upload the complete result.
The manual route is not a different kind of modded server. It still needs the same Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, Java runtime, dependencies, and server-compatible mods. Its main difference is that you must preserve and transfer more generated files yourself.
Install a Fabric server locally
1. Create a clean directory
Make a new, empty folder for the server, such as fabric-server. A clean directory prevents an old vanilla JAR, stale libraries, or mods from a different pack from being mistaken for part of the new installation.
If you are changing an existing server, stop it first and copy the entire world directory and configuration files to a backup location. Do not replace a loader or mod set in place until you can restore the previous world and files.
2. Install the required Java runtime
Install a 64-bit Java runtime matching the Minecraft release. For current versions, use Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer. Confirm the active executable:

java -versionOn systems with several Java installations, call the required executable by its full path or adjust the system path before running the server. A correct installation that is not the executable selected by the shell will not help the server.
3. Obtain the matching Fabric launcher or installer
Download the Fabric Server Launcher or run the official Fabric Installer and select the Server tab. Select the exact Minecraft version and the loader version identified in the pack’s manifest. Save the launcher in the clean server directory.
If the pack specifies a minimum Fabric Loader version, do not automatically choose the newest loader. Use the pack’s stated version unless its documentation explicitly permits a newer one.
4. Launch once to generate files
Open a terminal in the server directory and run the command shown by Fabric. A typical command is:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher>.jar nogui-Xmx2G sets the maximum heap to 2 GB; change it to a value appropriate for the pack and the machine. The JAR name in angle brackets is a placeholder for the actual launcher filename, and the placeholder must be replaced in a real command.
The first run downloads or generates the server files and normally stops with an EULA notice. Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change:
eula=falseto:
eula=trueStart the same command again. The server should create directories such as mods, config, and the world directory, along with server.properties and logging files. Do not add a modpack yet; first confirm that the clean Fabric server can start.
Assemble the server side of the modpack
Find the pack’s actual server files
A client modpack download is not automatically a ready-to-upload server pack. Some distributions provide a separate server bundle; others require you to copy common files while excluding client-only content. Follow the pack author’s file layout when one is provided.

Keep the files associated with the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions together. Do not mix a JAR from another Minecraft patch merely because its filename is similar.
Populate the mods directory
Place each Fabric-compatible server JAR in the server’s mods directory. Most Fabric mods also require Fabric API, which belongs in that same directory. Add the exact Fabric API build required by the Minecraft version and by the pack.

Also copy every dependency declared by the modpack or by an individual mod. Dependencies can include libraries, helper mods, and version-specific components. The loader log identifies a missing dependency more reliably than guessing from filenames.
Keep JAR files as downloaded unless the pack’s instructions require a particular filename. Do not unzip a mod JAR. A JAR is a Java archive that Fabric discovers directly.

If the server bundle includes config, defaultconfigs, scripts, datapacks, or a server-specific world setup, copy those directories to the server root while the server is stopped. A client-only configuration may contain graphics or keybind settings that do not belong on the server, so prefer the pack’s server bundle over copying the entire client directory blindly.
Back up an existing config directory before replacing it. Configuration changes can alter world generation, gameplay rules, and mod behavior; changing them after a world has been created can have permanent consequences.
Keep client-only mods off the dedicated server
Fabric metadata distinguishes client and server environments. A mod marked client-only may provide rendering, a HUD, shaders, menus, keybinds, or performance features without containing server code. Such a file belongs in each player’s client instance, not in the dedicated server’s mods directory.
OptiFine and OptiFabric are explicit examples that should not be copied to a dedicated Fabric server. Remove them from a server upload. Other visual, shader, replay, minimap, and interface mods may also be client-only; check the mod author’s environment label or server instructions rather than relying on the name.
Some mods have both client and server components. In that case, the author may require the same JAR on both sides or may provide separate files. Follow that mod’s stated installation requirement. A client-only mod can remain installed for players even when the server does not contain it, provided it does not add blocks, items, entities, or other server-required content.
Start the server and verify the installation
Use the same command and Java every time
Restart the server with the command that succeeded during the clean launch:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric-server-launcher>.jar noguiChanging the Java executable, heap setting, launcher JAR, or working directory between tests can hide the real cause of a failure. Record the working command in a startup script or the host panel once the installation is stable.
Read the startup log
Watch the console as Fabric discovers the loader and mods. The log should identify the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, and the installed mod set. A successful startup reaches the normal server-ready message without a dependency or environment exception.

If the server stops, start with the first meaningful error rather than the final shutdown line. The final line often only reports that the process ended after an earlier dependency, Java, or mod exception.
Test with one client
Before inviting players, create a matching Fabric client profile for the same Minecraft and loader versions. Install the client-required mods and any common gameplay mods in the versions specified by the pack. Join the server, load a world, run a harmless command, and watch both the client and server logs.
Check that the world loads, expected blocks and items appear, commands respond, and the console remains free of repeating errors. Stop the server normally after the test so world data is saved.

What to transfer with the manual method
When using the manual installer, upload the complete installation rather than only the mod JARs. Retain and transfer:
- The Fabric launcher JAR and the server JAR generated for the selected Minecraft version.
- The
librariesdirectory. server.properties,eula.txt, and any other generated startup files.- The server
mods,config, and pack-supplied data directories. - The world directory, if you are migrating an existing world and have verified the backup.
Use the host’s file manager or SFTP while the server is stopped. Preserve directory names and capitalization. An upload that omits libraries or changes the working directory can leave a launcher unable to find required files.
Set the host’s startup target
Many Minecraft panels let you choose a server type or replace the vanilla server JAR in a startup profile. Select Fabric or configure the startup script to invoke the Fabric launcher, not the vanilla server JAR. A panel that starts vanilla will ignore the Fabric loader and report that the mods are missing.
Set the panel’s Java major version to the one required by the Minecraft release. If the panel permits a custom command, use the Fabric command and include nogui for a console-only server. Confirm the panel’s working directory is the directory containing the launcher and libraries.
Plan memory, transfer, and backups
Modpacks vary considerably in memory use. Allocate enough RAM for the pack, the number of loaded chunks, and the expected players without assigning all system memory to Java. Leave memory for the operating system and the host panel. Increase the heap only after checking logs and observing actual usage; more allocated RAM does not repair a missing dependency or incompatible mod.
Choose a host or VPS that gives you:
- Control over the Java version.
- File transfer or SFTP access for the launcher, libraries, mods, and configuration.
- Enough storage and memory for the selected pack and its world.
- Automated or manually downloadable world backups.
- A startup command or panel option that explicitly supports the Fabric launcher.
Make a backup before changing the loader, Minecraft version, or world-affecting mods. Test that a backup can actually be downloaded and restored; a backup that exists only on the same failed disk is not a recovery plan.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
Unsupported Java or class-version error
Symptom: The process exits immediately with an unsupported class version, “requires Java,” or similar runtime message.
Fix: Compare the exact Minecraft version with its Java requirement. Use Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer, and check older-release guidance for earlier versions. Then verify that the host’s java command points to that runtime. Installing a second Java version is not enough if the startup script still calls the old executable.
“Incompatible mod set” or missing dependency
Symptom: Fabric Loader names a missing mod, an unsupported version range, or an incompatible dependency.
Fix: Read the complete loader message and compare it with the modpack manifest. Add the exact dependency version requested, update or downgrade the dependent mod to a compatible build, or remove the mod only if the pack permits it. Do not solve a dependency message by randomly replacing several JARs; that can create a second incompatibility and make the original error harder to identify.
The server crashes after copying a client pack
Symptom: A clean Fabric server starts, but it crashes as soon as the client mod directory is copied.
Fix: Remove client-only files first, including OptiFine and OptiFabric. Then review the remaining files for rendering, shader, HUD, menu, keybind, or other client-only functions. Add server-compatible mods in small groups and restart after each group so the offending file is identifiable.
Mods appear to be ignored
Symptom: The server starts, but expected blocks, commands, or gameplay changes are absent.
Fix: Confirm that the JARs are in the server’s actual mods directory, not a similarly named client folder or nested directory. Verify that they are Fabric builds for the exact Minecraft version and that the server was restarted after the upload. Check the startup log for the discovered mod list. A mod that is not listed was not loaded, while a listed mod with an error needs its own log message investigated.
A remote host starts vanilla Minecraft
Symptom: The panel reports a running server, but Fabric and the mods do not appear in the log.
Fix: Inspect the startup profile or script and make sure it invokes the Fabric launcher rather than the vanilla server JAR. Confirm that the launcher, generated server JAR, libraries directory, and server.properties are in the working directory selected by the panel. Restart only after correcting the target; uploading more mods cannot make a vanilla process load Fabric.

The server fails after a version change
Symptom: A world or pack worked before an update, then fails after changing Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Java, or several mods.
Fix: Restore the backup, identify which component changed, and update one compatibility layer at a time. Keep the exact previous launcher command and mod directory until the new combination starts cleanly. Never assume that a loader update, Minecraft patch, and mod update are independently safe when all three were changed together.
