On a BOOX Android e‑ink tablet, install apps through Google Play when the store is available. If your model does not show Google Play, BOOX documents installing an APK through the built-in browser or by sideloading it from a computer. After installation, long-press the app icon and choose Optimize to adjust DPI, text size, contrast and related controls, then tune the app’s refresh mode for scrolling and ghosting.
The exact menus depend on your BOOX model and firmware. Use the paths below as BOOX’s documented routes, but check the labels on your own tablet before changing a setting.

Check your model and firmware first
BOOX tablets do not all expose the same software controls. Before downloading anything, identify the exact model and firmware shown in your tablet’s device information. This matters for three reasons:

- Google Play is pre-installed on some BOOX models, but not necessarily every model.
- The Google Play activation path differs between firmware generations.
- Refresh, DPI, color and app-management controls vary by device.
Open the Apps panel and look for Google Play or Play Store. If it is present, use it as the primary installation route. If it is absent, follow BOOX’s Google Play setup instructions for your firmware or use the documented APK route. Do not assume that an Android app available elsewhere will run correctly on your particular BOOX tablet: e‑ink hardware, screen size, Android build and firmware can all affect compatibility.

Choose an installation route

Google Play handles app discovery and delivery for you. An APK gives you another path when Play is unavailable, but it shifts the responsibility for obtaining the file and checking it to you. BOOX’s installation guidance documents both routes; it does not establish that every APK is safe or that every Android app is compatible with every BOOX model.
Install an app from Google Play
If the Play Store icon is already in your Apps panel, installation is similar to the basic Android workflow:
- Open Apps and tap Google Play or Play Store.
- Search for the app you want.
- Open the app’s listing and check that it is the intended application before selecting Install.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the app from the Play Store or the Apps panel.
- If the app opens but is difficult to read or operate, leave the app and continue with the per-app optimization steps below.
Use Google Play where it is available because it is the route BOOX identifies for third-party apps. Availability of a listing does not guarantee a good e‑ink experience: an app designed around fast animation, frequent scrolling or color-heavy interfaces may still need display tuning.
Activate Google Play when it is missing
When Google Play is not present or is not yet active, use the activation path that matches your firmware. BOOX publishes separate instructions for firmware 3.2 and above and for firmware 2.0.1–3.1.

For firmware 3.2 and above
- Open Apps.
- Choose App management.

For firmware 2.0.1–3.1
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Enable Google Play.

- Wait the period BOOX specifies before attempting to sign in: 6–24 hours.
Those windows are BOOX’s estimates in its help instructions, not a guarantee that every tablet will become ready at the same moment. If the Play Store still cannot be used after the stated window, recheck that you followed the path for the tablet’s actual firmware and that the device has a working internet connection. If your menus use different labels, consult the BOOX instructions for that model rather than applying a path from another firmware generation.
Install an APK from the tablet or a computer
BOOX documents two APK methods: download the file through the tablet’s browser, or sideload it from a computer. Both methods end with opening the APK on the tablet so Android can install it.
Download the APK with the BOOX browser
- Use the BOOX browser to obtain the APK from a source you trust.
- Open the downloaded file from the tablet’s download location.
- Review the installation prompt and proceed only if the app, source and requested access are appropriate for you.
- After installation, find the app in the Apps panel and open it.
Sideload an APK from a computer
- Download the APK to your computer from a source you trust.
- Connect the BOOX tablet to the computer and copy the APK to tablet storage.
- On the BOOX tablet, open the copied APK and follow the installation prompt.
- Launch the installed app from the Apps panel.
Before installing either way, verify that the APK is intended for Android and that the app supports the device’s Android and hardware environment. BOOX’s guide confirms the download and sideload routes; it does not certify third-party APK sources or promise that a particular package will work. If an APK fails to install or the app immediately closes, treat that as a compatibility or package problem rather than repeatedly installing the same file.
Make an installed app easier to read
BOOX exposes optimization controls per app. This is important because a setting that helps a reading app may make a fast-scrolling app less comfortable. Start with the app’s own entry in the Apps panel:

- Return to the Apps panel.
- Long-press the app icon.
- Choose Optimize.
- Adjust the available text, DPI, contrast and other options.
- Open the app and test a representative screen, then return to Optimize if the result needs refinement.
Increase effective text size with DPI
BOOX’s app guidance includes changing text size through Optimize by adjusting DPI. A higher effective scale can make menus and body text easier to read, while an overly large setting can reduce the amount of information visible at once or cause controls to wrap. Change the value gradually and check both a normal content screen and the app’s settings or navigation screens.
Use contrast for text and images
Optimization can expose contrast controls. Increase contrast when text looks faint or images lack separation, and reduce it if thin strokes or light backgrounds become harsh. The useful value depends on the app’s typography and on whether your tablet has a monochrome or color e‑ink panel, so judge the result on the actual content you use rather than on a single splash screen.
Keep changes app-specific
Because the long-press Optimize action is tied to an individual app, you can give a reading app a larger text scale without forcing the same scale on every other app. Record the original value mentally or take a note before making a large change so you can reverse it if a layout becomes unusable.
Choose refresh and display settings for the task
Text size is only part of e‑ink usability. Refresh behavior controls how the screen redraws during scrolling, page changes and animated interface elements. BOOX lists per-app refresh mode and DPI controls in App Management Settings. The exact location and available modes depend on the model.

Find the per-app controls
- Open the tablet’s app-management area. Depending on firmware, this may be reached from Apps > App management or from the app’s long-press settings.
- Select the target app and look for refresh, display or optimization controls.
- Choose a refresh mode, apply it, and test the app while performing the action that matters to you, such as scrolling a document or switching pages.
There is no universal best mode. A mode that makes scrolling look smoother can trade away some battery life or leave more residual image on the panel, while a slower, fuller redraw can look cleaner but feel less immediate. The official guidance identifies the controls but does not provide a single performance setting that is optimal for every BOOX device or app.
Use EinkWise when it is available
BOOX’s EinkWise tool can adjust refresh modes and display settings such as color mode, layout and contrast. If your model includes EinkWise, use it to make task-specific changes while the app is open, then compare the result with the app’s own optimization settings. Device support and the names of individual controls vary, so follow the options shown on your tablet.
Reduce ghosting on color BOOX tablets
For color e‑ink devices, BOOX’s ghosting guidance recommends enabling Full Refresh and suggests Speed refresh mode for third-party apps. Full Refresh can clear residual images, while Speed is intended to keep third-party interaction responsive. Apply these recommendations through the refresh controls exposed by your model, then check the app’s text and scrolling because the available choices differ between devices.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The Play Store icon is not present
Confirm that you checked the Apps panel rather than only the home screen. If Google Play is still absent, identify the firmware and use the corresponding activation path. Do not use the 3.2-and-above menu path on a 2.0.1–3.1 device, or vice versa.

Google Play is enabled but sign-in does not work immediately
BOOX’s activation instructions include a waiting period after the GSF ID step. For firmware 3.2 and above, the stated window is 1–48 hours; for firmware 2.0.1–3.1, it is 6–24 hours. Wait through the applicable window before treating the delay as a failure, then verify the firmware-specific path and network connection.
An APK will not install
Recheck the file source and whether the package is intended for your Android environment. A failed installation does not demonstrate that every APK is incompatible, but it does mean you should not assume the file is suitable. Obtain a compatible package from a trusted source or use Google Play if it becomes available.
The app installs but is difficult to use
Long-press its icon, choose Optimize, and adjust DPI, text size or contrast. Test one change at a time so you can identify which setting helped. If the problem is movement or residual imagery rather than legibility, work in the per-app refresh controls instead.

Try another refresh mode. On a color BOOX tablet, BOOX specifically recommends Full Refresh for ghosting and suggests Speed mode for third-party apps. Because refresh choices differ by device, apply the controls your tablet actually provides and judge the result in the app you use.
A repeatable setup workflow
- Record the exact BOOX model and firmware.
- Check the Apps panel for Google Play.
- If Play is available, install the app from the store.
- If Play is missing, follow the matching GSF ID activation path or use a trusted APK through the browser or a computer.
- Launch the app once to identify whether the problem is installation, readability or screen redraw.
- Use the app icon’s Optimize menu for DPI, text size and contrast.
- Use App Management Settings or EinkWise for refresh and display behavior.
- On a color device with ghosting, test Full Refresh and the suggested Speed mode for third-party apps.
- Keep the settings that work for the task and leave other apps unchanged.
What to verify before buying or relying on a BOOX model
If a particular Android app is central to your workflow, verify support for the exact BOOX model rather than assuming that the product family behaves uniformly. Check whether Google Play is available, which firmware generation the tablet uses, and whether the app’s interface is suitable for an e‑ink display. Also confirm that the model exposes the optimization and refresh controls you expect. The installation and tuning process requires no special accessory in BOOX’s documented instructions; it is handled through the tablet, its browser or a computer used for APK sideloading.
